Well, across the great state of Iowa, it is the Simon Conway Show. You are very, very welcome in. It is 436. We always like to give credit, even though sometimes we don't get that same credit in return, but we do it the right way. But anyway, the KCCI had a story about a little girl in Warkey who has cancer. and she needs chemotherapy. And in order for her to start her chemotherapy, they had to check some things, and they found out that her platelets were low. And so she needed a transfusion. I guess that's the right word. I am not a medical person. So anyway, that was the need, and they looked on the shelf, and there was literally one bag. So they got this bag to this little girl, and she was able to start her chemotherapy. We have been telling you that blood and all the associated products, which we're going to get into in a minute, including platelets, are extremely low. This is not an unusual thing, generally speaking. It happens every summer, but they are... particularly low this year for whatever reason. Maybe we'll get into that as well. Joining us to talk about all of that because imagine that that last bag wasn't there, this little girl could not have started her chemotherapy. Catherine Cochleman from our friends at LifeServe Blood Center is with us right now. Catherine, I'm not overstating that at all, right? No, not at all. It's been a little bit dire circumstances. We had to put out a call urging anybody who was eligible to donate because stores were so low. So, yep, we were glad to hear that this little girl was able to get those platelets. But, you know, that was very lucky. And we're hoping everybody turns out so we can keep those shelves stocked. You never want to go to the shelf and find one bag. Right. I mean, you just don't. it's a scary thing for the family as well obviously the little girl probably doesn't really know what's going on and i i said everything's low right everything's that when we say everything what do we mean yeah so whole blood and platelets are all low right now um we've just seen a big decrease in donations this summer like simon said it's um It's not uncommon during the summer, but for some reason this summer has been particularly down even below what we normally expect to see. So we've had some tough situations. Well, just this morning, I got a text from LifeServe saying I am now eligible to donate whole blood.

Well, perfect. Yep. We are making sure everybody is aware when they are able so they can get out there and make a donation. Well, we will be doing that. I think we're booked. Do we book? Do we actually do it online? Do we make the booking? For the fair? Yeah. Probably not. Probably not, but I will make sure it's done by the time we go to bed tonight. Okay. So we are having a blood drive. You're bringing in the big old bus. You're going to park it right in front of the Crystal Studio at the Iowa State Fair. And we need people to sign up. You can just walk in, by the way. But if you sign up, you can get a lot of the paperwork done in advance. That actually is the more time-consuming part than the blood donation. And for every donor, every pint of blood that we get, you're helping three Iowans. So what happens with platelets? Do you know? I'm not a medical person. You're not a medical person. So, yeah, I know a little bit. So platelets, why they are a little bit trickier is because the process, the donation process takes around two hours. So it's a lot longer than a regular whole blood donation. Right. And then their shelf life is a lot shorter than whole blood. Whole blood usually lasts about six weeks on the shelf where platelets only five days. So we have to really be strategic about how those are sent out. and so they get used before they expire. Okay. So that's the circumstance. So a couple of things here. If you are a blood donor, if you have for whatever reason just not got around to doing it, they could really do with your help right now. Okay, I mean, we, you know, we're very competitive here. Mrs. C will tell you, I'm maybe a little bit competitive, she may tell you. And, you know, we like big numbers when we do things like this. We really want to, because the first time we did it, we just blew everybody away with the number of you that showed up, which was great. So I really want to beat that if we possibly can, because that's just my nature. But the need is now. The blood drive is August the 20th. So the need is right now. And, you know, if you're coming to the fair, if you've already made an appointment, that's fine. If you just haven't donated in a while and you can, you should do it. You should just do it. I don't want to read any more stories of five-year-old little girls who need platelets and they go to the shelf and there's one bag. I don't want to read those stories anymore. You can search by zip code or city or basically any way you want to and find either a donor center near you or a mobile blood drive and just make an appointment, sign up, and we'll send you the information from there.

Right, okay. So, and then on the 20th, starting at what time in the morning? 10 a.m. 10 a.m. Very civilized. Yes, and we'll be there until 5.30. Yes, absolutely. Very civilized. Yep. Walkins are welcome, but we would love for you to also make an appointment ahead of time if you can. Okay. Well, we take calls as well, Catherine. So let's bring Jim on the line right now. He has a question for you. Jim, you're on with Catherine. What is the question? Yeah, I was in a couple weeks ago to give blood, and I did give blood. Thank you. I noticed that the people there, everything was wonderful, except for one thing. I've been giving for years, but I noticed the questionnaire had a question on it that kind of set me back and actually made me a little bit angry. They changed the questionnaire from sex-specific to universal. So they asked both sexes the same question. And the one question I was asked, the two questions that I was asked that really sent me back was, are you pregnant or have you ever been pregnant? And the ladies there said, you know, if there's nothing they can do about it, this is a fighting decision. through their HHS that they change their... Jim, Jim, listen, I go to the doctor. The regular doctor, they ask me if I'm pregnant, man. There are things to get bent out of shape over, and there are things that you don't get bent out of shape over. And I mean, come on, Matt. You check a box. You say, no. Let's just move on. You did a great thing. I'm really grateful that you did it. And please keep doing it. If you did that two weeks ago, you got about six weeks until you can do it again. So we would love you to show up and donate blood because at the end of the day, we're doing this to help the community. That's... the bottom line and you just never know when you need it mrs c needed blood suddenly we weren't expecting it and she needed it um because of uh post post her cancer uh there was a discovery about some some health issue with her body and she needed not just blood she needed a lot of blood a lot went on for what six weeks mrs c yep So you just never know. And now it's great that she's able to give back, give that bond back quite literally. That's a great thing. It really is, Catherine. Yeah, without those donations, I don't know that I would be here. And if I were, I would not be in the far better health and condition that I'm in now. So I'm extremely grateful to every single donor, although my transfusion journey was interesting to say the least. Because within an hour after receiving... uh blood from my donors i could tell things about them i knew certain things they like to eat or certain things that they didn't like to eat and i thought it was all in my head and when i went back for the next transfusion i mentioned it and they said that was very common wow that uh there have been cases where smokers will get blood from non smokers and immediately quit i've heard that before wow i've heard that before she told me that yep i had a donor who obviously hated strawberries

Because the minute Simon opened his ritualistic strawberry yogurt after dinner, just the smell. I have a yoga off the dinner. I know, but you have it every night, so it's a ritual. But the minute I smelled it, I got ill. Wow. Sure enough, I knew that one donor loved cheese. Had a craving? Oh, I couldn't get enough cheese that night. Wow. Yeah, and that's very common. You just, you know, your blood from someone else comes with things they like and don't like. Well, I don't know. I actually genuinely don't know if I had blood, if I've received a transfusion. I had back surgery a long time ago. I'm assuming I did, but I don't know that I did. Anyway, so look, the bottom line is you could be helping yourself. You could be helping a relative. And, you know, it's sad when these things happened. There was a bad wreck just before we came on the air. I don't know if anybody needed help after that. But you just never know. Certainly about January, a few January ago when I got... Rear ended on 235 at high speed in the ice. I wasn't expecting that that morning. Thankfully, I didn't need any blood, but you just never know. So it's good when you're helping your neighbors. If people want to do that, where do they go?
