E-Bike Injuries Rising Among Young Riders

E-bike injuries continue to climb in the U.S. with about 41% of emergency department visits for e-bike injuries in 2024 and 2025 involving patients ages 10 to 19. E-bike sales have more than quadrupled over the past five years, and the bike's higher speeds obviously are increasing the risk of serious injuries. States and local governments taking different approaches to how to regulate this. San Diego. has banned children under 12 from riding e-bikes. New Jersey is requiring a special license for all e-bikes. But here in Florida, Ron DeSantis vetoed a bill that would have created new statewide rules for e-bike operation and would have established a micro-mobility safety task force. So the bill... would have barred e-bikes from traveling faster than 10 miles per hour within 50 feet of pedestrians. It would have required riders on shared pathways to yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before passing that. George Santos wrote that the proposed 10-mile-per-hour standard would be difficult for riders to measure and safely follow while operating. He also objected to creating a permanent micromobility device safety task force, saying it could lead to unlimited regulations and increased surveillance by local governments. I do get what the governor was saying about the pedestrian issue, trying to determine whether or not you're within 50 feet of pedestrians. kind of tough i would say they could have worded it if you're approaching pedestrians i guess but even then that's a little subjective so i i kind of understand why it's hard to write a law like that. I think I like San Diego banning kids under 12. Yes, absolutely. They're, I mean, they should be banned under 16. That's what I think, right? Because a 14-year-old is an idiot on an e-bike from what I've witnessed. No, I agree. You just can't have it. They're so dangerous. My cousin's kid broke his femur on one. Yeah. And I kind of get where New Jersey's coming from because some of them, they're pretty much motorcycles at this point. Yes, they are.

I think maybe you do something like you can't go over 15 miles per hour period and you ban kids under 16 from using them. And there should be a helmet law too, especially for kids because I see kids who have no idea how to ride them and they're not wearing a helmet. Right. Something needs to be done. I think the legislator thought they were addressing it with this. last session in this bill, but with the governor vetoing it, they're going to have to go back to the drawing board in the next legislative session, because it's definitely a problem.
