Brandon Johnson pauses new data centers in Chicago
NotableChicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order to temporarily halt the development of new data centers in the city. This decision is in response to community concerns about environmental impacts and utility costs, marking a shift in local governance towards more regulation of data center development.
vs. prior weeks: Previously, there was no significant focus on data center development regulations in Chicago.
“All right, Mayor Brandon Johnson just signed an executive order calling for a temporary pause on new data centers. You know, Christian, a lot of this is going to take counsel action. The mayor and council, not always seeing eye to eye, but do you think just given the wave of pushbacks we've seen against data centers that, you know, from residents, from constituents, that might help get them all, you know, singing out of the same hymn book. Yeah, I mean, this is a big deal. I mean, when you go to the suburbs and you see that these residents have been fighting against these data centers, a lot of my colleagues have been covering this over the past several.”

“There's been such a push against them that it seems the political wins are definitely changing in favor of pausing them or turning, at least making sure we're regulating them in a way that is safe for the neighborhoods around them before allowing future ones to go forward. And so that's exactly what Mayor Brandon Johnson has been proposing. He's called on city council to enact a pause, a moratorium on development of data centers until the city works out a permanent regulation scheme. And he's also put a few other kind of stopgap temporary regulations in place.”
