I'm Josh and Shana with the five things you need to know for Friday, September 19th. A move to avert a government shutdown was pushed forward this morning. House Republicans have managed to pass a stopgap funding bill to fund the government through November 21st in a razor-thin vote of 217 to 212. It marks the latest test of Speaker Mike Johnson's ability to keep his narrow GOP majority behind him, losing only two votes from his own party. One Democrat crossed to join Republicans in support of it. Now that it's pushed ahead, the Senate has to weigh in, but it's far from being a done deal. Both GOP and Democratic leaders are insisting the other side needs to back off from their stances, but neither side looks to be backing down. The deadline is still more than a week away, but as both the House and Senate could leave Washington for the next week or more without a path forward, the possibility of the government shutting down still hangs in the air. Vaccine advisors to the CDC have delayed a vote on changes to the newborn hepatitis B vaccine for the second time. A panel of advisors are holding a two-day meeting to decide changes to recommendations for children's vaccine schedules. They'd already pushed back a vote on hepatitis B vaccines for newborns yesterday. And in a chaotic start today, they voted again to delay a vote on any changes. The committee, which has been handpicked by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.., had planned to consider a new recommendation that would wait to give newborns a dose of the hepatitis B vaccine until they are at least a month old. Currently, baby is given the shot at birth. It's been the recommendation since 1991, and infections in infants have dropped from an average of 18,000 per year to around 20 reported cases per year now. Hepatitis B, by the way, causes long-term infections in children, which can damage the liver and increase the risk for cancer. There's more bad news for Americans battling higher prices. Winter heating bills are about to go up. And that's enough to put a chill down anyone's spine. CIDN's Tammy Luby is with me. So, Tammy, how much are prices expected to go up by? Hi Joshan, yes, the cost is expected to jump an average of 7.6% to $976 this season, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association. The spike stems from increases in electricity and natural gas prices, as well as a forecast for a somewhat colder winter. So how people heat their homes will have a big impact? That's right, Joshan.
Those who use electric heat will likely see their bills soar an average of 10.2%, while those who heat with natural gas will pay an additional 8.4% on average. But those who use heating oil or propane will likely catch a break and see their costs go down a bit. Estonia says its airspace was violated by three Russian fighter jets today. The country's foreign ministry says the jets entered over the Gulf of Finland for 12 minutes, without permission, adding it had summoned Russia's Charger de Fair over the incident. It comes about a week since NATO fighter jets scrambled to shoot down multiple Russian drones, which had crossed into Poland. Intelligence officials are still split over whether that incursion was intentional or accidental. As intelligence gathered about the drones themselves, their flight pattern and their technical specifications, has been mixed and difficult to interpret. Coming up, the conspiracy theories flooding the internet around the Charlie Kirk shooting. Back to School starts now. Experts say the baseless theories in the wake of the shooting are coming thick and fast at a speed rarely seen before. According to nonpartisan data analytics firm peak metrics, there have been more than 2 million unique posts on X, referencing conspiracy theories about Kirk's killing. That's roughly double the volume of posts after last year's attempted assassination of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. Trump allies like Steve Bannon have pushed the idea that Kirk was killed as part of a broad national conspiracy, even though investigators said they believe the suspect acted alone. And one of the most haywire theories coming from the left is that Trump orchestrated Kirk's murder to distract the public from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. And that's all for now. Our next episode drops at 6pm Eastern.
