Hey there, from CNN. I'm Paola Ortiz with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, December 24th. If you had a chance to tell the government how you're feeling, what would you say? Well, a new CNN poll shows that for many people, the economy is at the top of that list, and CNN's Ariel Edwards Levy is here to give us the full breakdown. Hey, Paula, most Americans don't have a lot of faith that political leaders are listening to them. In a new CNN poll, we found just 34% say they think that President Trump cares even somewhat about what people like them have to say. Only 36% think the Democratic leaders care. So what would Americans say if they could send a message to Washington? The most common responses have to do with the economy and cost of living. That includes things like food prices, healthcare costs, and helping the middle class. More news coming up, including more than a million documents related to Epstein and the fate of the suspect in the National Guard shooting. Back to School starts now. The Justice Department has uncovered over a million documents potentially related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, and it may need a few more weeks to review them before releasing them to the public. That's according to an announcement posted by the department on X, saying that the lawyers were, quote, working around the clock to review and make the legally required redactions to protect victims. The announcement comes as DOJ leadership asked career prosecutors in Florida to volunteer over the quote next several days to help redact the Epstein files, according to internal emails. It's not clear how the documents were discovered, what might be in them, or if more are coming. CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment. Follow CNN.com for updates. The man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House has been charged in a complaint with federal firearms charges in connection with the ambush on November 26 that fatally wounded one of the West Virginia National Guard members and seriously injured the second. 29-year-old Rachnamala Lackenwal has been charged with transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to commit an offense punishable for more than one year. He was also charged federally with transporting a stolen firearm in interstate commerce. Lackenwal remains charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, an illegal possession of a firearm in violation of D.C. Code. Lackenwal was also shot during the encounter. He has pleaded not guilty to the D.C. charges. A silent protest against the Israeli government by the women in red has been drawing attention to what demonstrators say is the sharp decline in women's rights. To explain more, here's CNN's tale Shalev. Hi, Paola. Three years ago, Israeli women dressed in red robes borrowed from the handmaid's tail to protest their government. People thought it was over the top. Now, women advocates are saying they were actually realistic. Israel has fallen from 27th to 84th globally in gender equality. Only six of Benjamin Netanyahu's 33 ministers are women, and 44 women have been murdered this year, the highest number in a decade. Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition depends on ultra-Orthodox parties, and is pushing new laws to expand all-male religious courts' authority over women's lives. Political survival is reshaping women's rights and moving Israel into a more religious and conservative future. Coming up, the latest in the battle over transgender rights and gender affirming care. That's dell.com slash deals. The Trump administration's latest health proposal to bar transgender care for minors at hospitals is now being challenged by 18 Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C. The states argue the policy unlawfully violates their administration of Medicaid and impedes state's authority to regulate medical practices within their borders. The policy was announced by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. in late December. It bars the hospitals that provide transgender medical care to minors from joining federal health programs like Medicare and Medicaid. That's all for now. We're on a special holiday schedule this week, so we're taking the day off tomorrow. Our next episode drops on Friday morning at 6 a.m. Eastern. We'll see you then and Merry Christmas.
