Breaking news when it happens any time. But first, another hour with Bob Lonsbury starts now on News Radio, Wham, 1180. Thank you very much, sir. I appreciate that. Let me look out here. Yeah, it's a flat-out beautiful day for radio program, my friend, and I wish you a good morning. You know, there are a lot of lawsuits which have been lodged against these social media companies. Meta, the big one with Facebook and Instagram, is probably going to be up next, claims that these social media products foster or create addiction to them and that this must be punished by a court of law with some sort of fine or something. You know, I don't know what the courts will decide. God bless them as they go forward. Hopefully they will use wisdom and judgment. But those cases don't have anything to do with you and me. You and me, we have the ability to make decisions and choices for ourselves pursuing our best interests. And I don't really need a court case to tell me that social media and the devices upon which it is carried, like your cell phone.

3:09

are addicting. The clear changes in the behavior of Americans since the advent of these technologies and products is undeniable. And, you know, while that smartphone can be very useful, absolutely. I suspect that both you and I use them to help make our living. And that is tremendous. I suspect that likewise you and I have them as sort of the one of the main means of communication within our family. The family group text ends up being crucially important to a whole lot of folks. And that's all to the plus. But a knife can cut both ways. And it is undeniable that there is an addictive characteristic to the cell phone and to the apps which are on it to include social media apps. And there are those who become sort of addicted to posting and there are those who become sort of addicted to scrolling. And the phrase doom scroll has entered our language. because we all instantly know what it means and we all or at least most of us have been afflicted by it to an extent so as you look up from your phone to piss and moan about Facebook or Instagram or the medic company that owns them both, whichever big executive you want to say bad things about. You and I know there's a problem. You and I hold the phone in our hand. You and I hold our lives in our hands. Maybe you and I could begin making different choices. And, you know, it's a tough call when your child gets to be, you know, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and everybody else in school's got a phone and such. And you say, well, do I, do I, you know, whatever? I don't think I can find a parent out there who will tell you the truth, who will say that getting a smartphone for their child resulted in a positive outcome. Almost all the parents I know report that when they got the child, the smartphone, unfortunately there was a change in that child and it wasn't for the better. There is a drawing away from real life. There is a focusing on the phone and on the apps that are on it. I don't say this as a criticism of the people who are holding the phone in their hands looking down at it. I say it as a warning, right? There is a risk here. There is a danger here. We are diminished by overuse by obsession with these social media apps and other types of apps and that smartphone.

5:57

But here's the deal. As opposed to sitting here and crying like victims and saying we ought to have a lawsuit too, maybe we could recognize that we are in charge of our lives. and we can put the phone back in our pocket or in our purse. We can say simple things like it does not come out at the dinner table. Maybe you shouldn't be on your phone when you're in company with someone else. We all have, you know, looked at some young couple there across the table from one another at some restaurant and presumably on some date or at some stage of life where you're kind of hubba, hubba, interested in each other. And they are each staring at their phone. You'm saying? Slick, she didn't bring cleavage day so you could stare at your phone, right? And a sweet lady, you did not come out on this meal so that you could stare at your phone. You guys put your phones down and look each other in the eye. It's very easy for us to make that observation about other people. But those other people are going to be in charge of themselves. You're going to be in charge of yourself. And so what you and I have to do is we have to be the ones who put the phones down. We've got to make sure that we're not doing that ourselves. And here's a thing. As you scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll, what you are doing may not be that bad. I'm just looking at these posts on Facebook, Bob. Okay. I'm just, but I go on X, Bob, I get a lot of news. I'm just looking to see what's happening, Bob. Okay. Okay. But one thing about life is that you can typically only do one thing at a time. And so as you're scrolling on your phone, looking at whatever apps you look at, social media or whatever um you have to also ask yourself what am i not doing right now what is this displacing or replacing in my life and you know again you ought to you ought to ask that question because there's a good chance that it is displacing something far more valuable uh to you Right? Smarter people than I have taken that old sales ranking from Sears where they would have products that would be Sear, you know, good, better, and best, right? Do you want to buy good, better, or best, at three different price points? In life, you know, we often will, oh, I'm doing something good. Yeah, but you know there's something better and maybe something best. The other things you could do, instead of sitting there at your phone, put it down, go talk to your sweetheart. Put it down, go talk to your kids. Go talk to your brother, your sister, whatever else like that. Put it down, get up and go for a run. Put it down, clean up your house. Put it down, do something that makes you a better person, right? Put it down, do something that helps you be more useful to other people, right?

9:02

And so, anyway, I don't want to give you a lecture or whatever, but these decisions that are, like this court's going to look and see if meta is good, bad, or indifferent, I don't need the court to make decisions in my life. I don't need the court to make decisions about what I should or shouldn't do to protect myself. I can do that myself. It is undeniable that these things are addictive. It is undeniable that these things can disproportionately occupy our time. It is undeniable that these things can have negative impact upon us. And so it's undeniable that if we are being smart, we will put this down and walk away, at least every now and again. Again, who's using the phone? Who's doing the using? Are you using the phone or is the phone using you? And in very large measure, the phone... But they put algorithms on there, Bob. It's not fair. They put out... It's okay. You're bigger than an algorithm. Just say no. Put the phone away. Go do something else. Take a break back in a moment with you on News Radio Wham 1180. Campaigns move fast. And we... move faster. Headlines change and we're always ready. Polls only tell you so much. And Wham? We'll explain it all. Objective and accurate election coverage as it happens. Election 2020 since on News Radio, Wham 1180. Have you heard the news? The search for survivors in Colombia. We're at 2221180, 1-800-2-99-1-1-1-80. Real quick, on the release of this Marine Corps veteran by Russia, honestly, somebody needs to put Vladimir Putin down. God needs to send him a blood clot or something like that here pretty quick. There's a fellow named Robert Graham. He's 32 years of age. He was 28. He's got Russian relatives. His name's not Graham. It's Gilman. Forgive me. He's got Russian relatives. I think the deal is, I think he was born in Poland to Russian parents. They emigrated to the United States. He became the United States that is in and served a hitch with the United States Marine Corps. And God bless him for it. But he's over there in Russia and visiting relatives or friends or something like that. And police come and grab him up and rough him up. We, the United States, think that it was because he was an American. They, the Russians, who are known to be lying bastards, said it's because he got drunk and kicked a Russian cop. So he, at age 28, was sentenced to four years. And it wasn't, he wasn't 28 then. He's gotten out early. But he's been in there for four years. And at any rate, I don't know if you saw the picture of him, the man is about to die, right?

12:02

um he's described as being catatonic and in something of a stupor um his body is emaciated he's starved and he is frail and on the i mean he looks to be on the verge of death And I've known a fair number of 32-year-olds in my day. And yes, illness, including life-threatening or ending illness, obviously can come to a 32-year-old. But statistically, doesn't happen all that often. Right? And, you know, the photographs of him before, like when he was on trial, he had meat on his bones, his eyes were bright, he was doing fine. And so the real question is, what did these frigging bastards do to this man? Right? How is it that he's now catatonic and in a stupor? How did that happen? What did you give him? How much did you beat him? What led this? And how is it that the man's almost starved? But you have doctors in Russia, right? Because we know you have doctors and scientists because you keep inventing new poisons to kill people who disagree with you. So, I mean, you have food in Russia, whatever else like that. I know you do for the North Koreans you've hired to come over and fight for you because I guess Ukraine's kicking your Russian ass. But I look at this. and I don't know. It's a good thing I'm not President of the United States. One, our country be screwed because I don't know a frigging thing. But two, I'd look at that boy and I'd say, you know what, we're going to blow something up in your honor, my brother. We're going to, I hate to be a jerk. I've never understood the architecture of the Kremlin. It's like, it's honest with you, the Kremlin, you know, that building they got over there, it's like interesting shape architecture on there. It looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss deal, right? If Whoville was going to have a city hall where a little Wendy or Lou Who or whatever her name is, Cindy Lou, I don't know, that one. Fuck, that one there. It would look like the Kremlin. But all this crap going on with them, you want to say to Volodymyr Zelensky, listen, I got $20 to go towards the drone fund if you want to blow that place up, okay? So anyway, I'll shut my mouth. I will shut my mouth. You heard the news about a couple of significant arrests, Rochester Police Department yesterday.

14:47

In both situations, the bad guys, we'll talk more about the details of these arrests after the newscast, but in both of these instances, the people who were arrested had firearms with extended magazines. One had a 27-round magazine. The other had a 28-round magazine, and these were loaded magazines. I just want to say to Kathy Hochul, you have a high-capacity magazine ban, which seems effective only in limiting the magazine capacity of those of us Patsy's who obey the law. And you are asking us to potentially defend our homes, our families, our communities with 10 rounds in our magazines while going up against people who, in these two felonies, two people one day, where they've got 27, 28 rounds in their magazines. You seem, ma'am, through your failed criminal justice system to allow the bad guys to arm themselves. with dramatically more firepower than you allow the good guys to arm themselves. There's a part of my suspicious self which wonders if that's not an accident. You know what I'm saying? Is that? Is that a purpose, ma'am, or whatever? But also, I would say, if we have a natural law and constitutional right to defend ourselves and courts and life teach us that the answer is yes, then don't we have a right to defend ourselves with corresponding capacity? If the other fellow has a gun, I ought to be able to have a gun. I ought not to be required to defend myself with a baseball bat. And if the other fellow, the bad guy, the fellow released repeatedly by your laws, Madam Governor, if that guy has a high-capacity magazine, why is it again that I'm a felon and have to go to prison if I have one? And how is it... truly self-defense if I am partially disarmed by government rules, which my opponent, my attacker, does not follow, right? You kind of, kind of after a while, get a little tired of being screwed over by this state. Dave Debo's newscast is next. We'll be back when he's done on News Radio Wham 1180. So here we are. Five months later. Iran. They haven't seen anything yet. Win the war. It's a gift to the world. What happens next. Costing lives. Happens here. And taxpayer dollars. Use radio. Wham. 1180. There are some people for whom an electric car is a bad idea.

17:51

But there are some people undeniably for whom an electric car can be a perfect idea. Depending on how much you drive a day or whatever else like that, you can save significant amounts of money driving electric car as contrasted with driving a gasoline car. Now, I'm not some environmental person. Forgive me, I just don't give too hoots and hell about that. I don't believe in it. But I do believe... that your transportation budget for your family, you ought to spend money in the most intelligent way you can. And at Electric Car Corner, which is a dealership that specializes in selling used electric and hybrid vehicles, they have a whole lotful of vehicles, large, small, all the different makers. And many of those offer significant transportation savings for families like you, right? I would urge you just to look at their website and stop out and talk to them sometime. They're on Route 96 just west of 332, electric car corner.com. And here's a deal. If you're curious about electric, how does this work? How does the money work out? Would it work for me or not? Just go out and talk to them. They'll explain it to you, answer your questions, let you drive this, that, and the other show you the features. And again, you look at dollars and cents. You look at your life and you see if this is a viable alternative for your transportation dollar. For many people, the answer is yes, you might be one of those people. Electriccarcorner.com. Hi, I'm Doug Embledge. I thought I understood resilience, but reporting on it. The two press releases just out from the Rochester Police Department. says, see if there's anything we can learn here from this stuff. Last night around 10, 10 p.m. officers responded to a house in the 100 block of Palm Street for the report of a burglary in progress. That's a big deal, isn't it, right? The victim reported that he was in a car in the driveway when a mass suspect approached inquiring about marijuana sales. The victim further reported that he scared the suspect off and ran into his house. When entering his house, he heard multiple additional suspects in the house who ran out of the back door. When officers arrived, they encountered 18-year-old Troy Owens running from the back of the house. Officers safely took him into custody a few houses away and recovered an AR-15-style firearm loaded with 28 rounds. Owens was transported in Monroe County Jail and expect to be arraigned this morning in Rochester City Court, probably free right now, maybe getting a garbage plate. I don't know. Troy Owens, age 18, is charged with a criminal possession of weapon to second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, and burglary in the first. That's a photo of his...

20:49

It's sort of a, you know, a short, it's on an AR action, but it is designed to be something of a pistol. And, again, at a magazine with, when they say, 28 rounds in it. That's some 18-year-old burglar, allegedly, coming into somebody's house. And here's another one. On August 7th, around 7.40 p.m., the 7th was, what, last week sometime, officers responded to a house on Canton Street for the report of a male shot. Officers located a male in his 20s, suffering from a significant gunshot wound to the lower body and quickly applied a tourniquet. The victim was transported to strong hospital for further treatment of a no longer life-threatening wound. Their preliminary investigation found that 41-year-old Sergio Ponder Sr. allegedly shot the victim a family member during an argument. Yesterday, the New York State Police conducted a traffic stop in a 300 block of Avenue D and safely, a criminal on Avenue D, damn, and safely took Ponder into custody. During the arrest, an extended magazine was located, which was loaded with 27 rounds, a 22-caliber ammunition. Ponder was transported in North Carolina Jail and is expected to be arraigned this morning in Rochester City Court. He's probably getting to play with the other guy right now. So, at any rate, two crimes. arrests in the same day, both involving high-capacity magazines. Real quick, yesterday I went on a run, and it was a beautiful day, and I just, anyway, I loved it. I went north on Portland and up to Ridge, and then Ridge over to Clinton and Clinton back down into downtown. As I came through Clinton, there was a multi-agency ATV detail going on. You know, these dirt bikes that don't have the licenses, the four-wheeler's and such like that. You had Rochester Police Department. You had New York State Police, you have Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and you had the state trooper helicopter. Here's the thing. I don't want to give way any tips, okay? But you dumbass freaking criminals, you should look up every now and again. I mean, just it's an idea, you know what I'm saying? But like, gosh, I wonder what that helicopter is doing. I mean, it just, hey, something to think about, kids, something to think about. But they were tracking down and taking off the streets, people operating these vehicles unlawfully and dangerously, and two thumbs up to the RPD for that. And the troopers and the deputies and, of course, the state police flight detachment out of the Frederick Douglas International Airport. But before I got over to North Clinton, let's reverse, I'm going up Portland, and I have gone past the beautiful hospital. I have crossed over 104, and I'm just about even with wonderful Ridge Donut. If you're there at Ridge Donut right now, could you go over and could you kiss an apple fritter full on the mouth for me?

23:53

You know what I'm saying? Right on the lips. You kiss that apple fritter and you tell it that Bobby misses it, okay? And one day I'll come over there and I'll give that fritter all the love it can handle. Okay, just all right, just thank you. But I'm just about even with a Ridge Donut and there is a bus shelter, you know, for people catching the RTS, whatever. Very nice. And as I approach it, you know, a fat guy waddling, I see wheels underneath the shelter side. And they're the wheels of a wheelchair. No, somebody's in a wheelchair in there. So as I come by, I just kind of glance over, and I'm even with it. It's on my left-hand side. And there, I see a naked woman. with no legs, about a sea cup, which is, she's in a hospital gown which, you know, has not been secured, and she's turned sideways in the chair, like leaned over, kind of taking a nap or whatever, all right? So it's one of those hospital gowns with the little blue things on there and the tie things. And it's just for half a moment as I go by and I'm like, oh, you don't see, you don't see that every day. um but but so and i just i keep on going and then it's like you know what that's one of those moments in time i'm going to stop and i'm just going to write a sentence about this and uh just in case i you know reached out to the irondicoat police department you know you got this going on over here and and in any rate this lady in her situation illustrates a problem that first responders, especially in and around the city, deal with on a regular basis. For example, that lady right there will generate, you know, 2, 3, 4, 5, sometimes almost 10 911 calls a day. Right? Because somebody like you or me goes by and goes, holy hell, there's a naked woman with no legs. Get an ambulance out there, which is a reasonable response. Yes, that is a reasonable response. Problem is, and the police, according to the police chief rondequate, They try to help this lady on a regular basis, right? They've offered her clothes. They've, can we take you someplace? Do you need help? We've got this, that. You know, would you like to go to this place, that place? Would you like to go to the hospital? She apparently doesn't like the hospital, mostly because they won't give her diet Pepsi. But the deal is that, and then when the first responders come, you know, the report is that, you know, this lady will. yell racial insults at them, or throw feces at them, other things which apparently are undesirable from the first responder standpoint. And this phenomenon of folks who are out there, and again, I'm not criticizing the woman, I believe, you know, not trying to be negative or disparaging or defamatory to her, but I presume she's mentally ill in one way or another.

27:07

Right? Because that's the only explanation for that. You know, ma'am, you don't want to be here. No, this is not how you want to be. But she very belligerently refuses aid. And she is one of possibly dozens or scores of such people across the greater Rochester city area. and, you know, firehouses and such like that, you know, good, well-intentioned people see this stuff, call 911, okay, the fire truck's got to go out and respond. And, you know, they get F-bomb or feces thrown at them. Or other folks who are similarly afflicted, you know, maybe they've got a drug issue, maybe it's mental health or whatever, and they're acting in a very, you know, way, you know, an odd way. But... They don't want help. They want to accept help. They're very belligerent to first responders. And what is supposed to do? If you're the fire truck responding, what do you do? If you're the police officer responding, what do you do? If you're the ambulance crew responding again to this lady, what do you do? Right? There are some people... who need to be institutionalized and i don't say that punitively or harshly but some people for their own good and protection and when we back years ago said we're not going to do that anymore we're not going to be oppressive well we ended also not being protective and we've put people on the streets who are a danger and a distraction to themselves and others And at any rate, that was the case yesterday. God bless that lady. I hope that somehow there can be peace in her mind at some point, and she can be free of what afflicts her, and she can get the care that her community is so eager to provide. Take a break. Back with you a moment. Listeners on the loose is next on News Radio, Wham 1180. Stakes face off between red and blue this November.
