I'm Kathleen Marple Cal, and here are today's top local stories. Shabbat services marred by an apparent hate crime in a Manhattan synagogue last night. The sound on the live stream from the central synagogue on Lexington Avenue as a man disrupted services. Now, police say this guy was acting disorderly, and NYPD sergeant working security move to remove him. And then they say he hit a 63-year-old woman, damaged synagogue property, and spit at and headbutted the security team. Congrian Susan Rowan and Arlen Greenbaum told CBS2 News. He was screaming and yelling. I heard a loud pop, and the first thing I heard, we thought it was a gun. When I saw he wasn't armed, I mean, he was just ramming and raving and yelling him, and he looked like a maniac. But I wanted to go undercover. He was very, like, full of hate. Now the man, identified his 46-year-old Larry Montez of the Bronx, has been charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other offenses. The service continued after the disruption. The woman who was punched is recovering from a cut to the lip and pain in her forearm. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says there's no additional threat at this time. She says this incident is deeply painful, noting that she grew up in central synagogue and it's always been a place of comfort and peace. Jessica Tisch says a place of worship should never be a crime scene. Zohran Mamdani posted on social media that he's horrified and can only imagine the pain and fear the attack causes for the congregation and Jewish New Yorkers, adding that his administration will do everything in its power to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe. Council Speaker Julie Menon also posted calling the incident painful and traumatizing and saying it only deepens the fear many are already feeling. And State Attorney General Letitia James condemned the attack saying no one should feel threatened in their place of worship. Still plenty of questions in wake of Luigi Mangione's guilty plea to federal stalking to killed charges in the death of United Health CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione's lawyers are trying to get the state murder case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, though, is expected to fight it. Right now, the state trial is still set to begin September 8th and all of Mangione's admissions and the evidence in the federal case could be used against him. His lawyers are also working to get him a shorter sentence. Federal sentencing guidelines call for 24 to 30 years. The plea was a stunning turn in a case that made Mangione into a celebrity with an online following and some supporters. After the hearing, U.S. Attorney General Jamie McDonald had a strong message for Mangione's admirers. There can be no celebrity in assassination.

Any person who celebrates, encourages, or excuses actions like these is fundamentally wrong. He was trying to stop three guys from harassing an older man in the subway in Queens, and a good Samaritan got stabbed twice for his trouble. This happened on a platform at the 82nd Street Jackson Heights Station early Thursday. Police say 35-year-old Aaron Rodriguez got into a dispute with three men. One of the guys pulled a knife and stabbed him. Rodriguez ended up in the hospital. He told the Daily News, we saw those men around the older fellow who was sitting on a bench at the end of the platform, moved to break it up, telling the paper he just didn't like seeing that stuff. Now, police are still looking for the suspects. They've released surveillance video and dirge anybody with info to call crime stoppers. The toll is rising in the Upper East Side Legionnaires disease outbreak. City health officials say two more people have died, bringing the number to nine. They say the latest victims were diagnosed weeks ago, and there have been no new cases for more than three weeks. One was a 92-year-old man, a client of lawyer Ron Catter, who told Ten Ten wins it's a tragic and needless loss. incredible to think that this is tolerated in the city where every year there's an outbreak that sickens dozens and kills many. You know, it's as if the cooling tower owners are being given a license to kill people. City Council is working on measures to require more inspections and cleaning of the cooling towers that are linked to the spread of the disease. Well, a Bronx neighborhood is bracing for talk of a teen takeover again this weekend. Dyckman is still feeling last weekend's fallout, says Councilmember Delaroza. We had massive economic loss for our small businesses who all. Shut down before 7 p.m. Now another gathering is being promoted online for Sunday. The city is putting 700 additional officers, barricades, and street closures in place. Dela Rosa says officials will not be caught off guard again. Every resource available to us through our city operations will be deployed into the community. This time, officials want the crowd stopped before businesses have to close again. Darius Ranses 1010 wins at 923 FM. A New Jersey congressman wants to know why the state didn't get federal aid for last February's blizzard. After the storm dumped several feet of snow driven by hurricane force winds and killed a dozen people. Governor Mikie Sherrill submitted a request for relief. Trump administration turned it down in July. Representative Frank Palone wants to know why, and he's demanding that the lawmakers who oversee FEMA ask why the funding was denied. Well, it's cool blues and hot barbecue at Hudson River Park today. It is the Park's 26th annual Blues Barbecue Festival. Blues Legend Bobby Rush is headlining. There'll be a slew of big name and local acts.

And then there's the food. The park's Robert Atterbury tells Tenton wins. Blue's barbecue is an event that attracts everyone from across the city. It really represents a cross-section of New York. We have restaurants serving food from all different types of barbecue. We have Dominican barbecue. We have Queen's style barbecue. We have a southern Japanese barbecue. There's a real mix of everyone just like New York City. Admission is free. The event runs 1 to 9 p.m. at the park at Pierfit 76. A 33-year-old man described as homeless faces charges after police say he fired shots at two construction workers on the Upper West Side near Central Park early yesterday. This happened as before 9 a.m. near West 71st. Police say these workers were on a park bench when the suspect started acting strangely. Then they say the guy got into an argument with him and it turned physical and the suspect pulled a gun and fired three rounds. No one was hit. But those shots sparked a lot of concern in the area. Police later arrested the man and they say they recovered a gun where they took him in. His dame and the exact charges against him has not yet been released. Yeah, that's probably not what he had in mind. A man ended up being airlifted out of a Long Island park after he got lost looking for his model airplane. This happened August 7th around 2 p.m. Nassau police called on a report of a 70-year-old man who got lost near the aerodrome field in Cedar Creek Park in Seaford after he went in to retrieve the missing plane. They found him, but that wasn't the end of it. Okay, 24, we have the patient. We're going to need to figure out a way to get him out of here. To be totally honest, we might have to hoist him out of here. Yeah, Heli 6. Can you notify NYPD? A little bit of an open to be cleared. By NYPD can drop right there. I'm going to see if I can grab my flashlight and see if I can get their attention. NYPD, which released the audio, sent the aviation unit in and brought the man out. He's okay, no word on the plane.
