On Reddit, true crime doesn't come from journalists. It comes from the victims, the witnesses, and sometimes the suspects themselves. Every Tuesday on Crimes of Reddit, we read these posts out loud. I'm Sabrina Deanna Roga. And I'm Alexis Linkletter. One of us brings the story, the other goes in blind, reacting in real time, just like you. New episodes drop every Tuesday. It's time for the Capitol Clash on the WCCO Morning News. Well, I know what's going on in St. Paul. We're going to have a female governor no matter what after this primary. Joining us now on the John Schuster-Coldwell Banker hotline with Capitol Clash, Amy Fredrickson and Jeff Hayden. Good morning to both of you. Amy, I got some pushback from listeners. Like, who cares? It's best candidate, whatever. This is a big deal to have a woman in the governor's office here in Minnesota. I can't believe it took this long. Good morning, Vita. You know, people used to ask me in 2011, because I was the first woman Senate majority leader, and they'd be like, you know, what do you think about that? And I would say the exact same thing. I would say, I can't believe it took this long. And that's how I feel about this. But it doesn't take away from, it is a big deal. It does matter, right? It matters for 50 plus percent of the population. It matters. And also, by the way, what I also love about this is,

These women on the ballot also were the best candidates in the race. So you can't have both. And if I could tell you the number of times I tried to recruit a woman, she'd say, well, Joe Schmo's running, so I'll just let him run. Or the times I met a guy, and I was like, I wish his wife would run. She's fantastic. And it just didn't happen. So I think it can be both, and it shouldn't be both. It should be the best candidate. Yes, absolutely, absolutely. You make a very good point. Jeff, I'm going to bring you in on this. You look at Amy Klobuchar versus Lisa Damed. Lisa Dammett's rise has been pretty remarkable as you've watched her move her way up the ranks and really gain a lot of popularity in so many realms. But then you look at the Goliath that is Amy Klobuchar. This is going to be an interesting race. Yeah, it really is. I mean, it's going to be something that I think Minnesotans are going to watch really closely. We kind of know what the issues are. The Democrats are going to basically run on Trump and the administration's policies, but in particular, Operation Metro Surge and what we all saw this past winter and the out and the damage that it did to our community. And then, you know, Speaker Damon is going to run on fraud. She's going to say that when Democrats were in control that they allowed this fraud to happen, you know, on their watch, and this is a problem. So you're going to, you know, really kind of mean, they're going to talk about their policies and hopefully talk about the things that they're going to do to make Minnesota a great place to live and continue to be a great place to live. But I think it's really going to come out to each one of their bases and then independence on who they trust. moving forward to deal with those issues that I just outlined. Amy, we talk about electability. Republicans are hungry for statewide office in this state, and they didn't go with endorsed candidates. What does that say and what is that hunger about? I mean, Republicans are, you know, you talk to the regular person who is a Republican on the street, they're happy about these candidates. Oh, very much so. And this is interesting, right? My entire political career, I have not seen someone, a Republican against an endorsed candidate, win a primary, even against former Governor Pawlenty in 2018. It didn't happen. So two, so few things are going on. The Michelle Defoya and Lisa Davis, again, were the best candidates. And they ran fantastic races. Their team ran really great races. I don't take anything away from them. But also Vanita, right. And by the way, Lisa Demuth not only beat out against this decades-long Republicans only take the endorse candidate, the GOP endorse candidate. She is one of a very few, a handful of candidates across the country that ran against the Trump-endorsed candidate and won, and she won handily. So there's really something going on there. It is a pivotal moment for the Minnesota GOP, I think, for the very good. And, you know, like running against Amy Klobuchar, no one is going to take that for granted.

But I think there is a movement here that I think is very good and hopeful for the strength of the Minnesota GOP going forward. Jeff, progressives had their day on primary day, certainly with Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan coming out on top and really handily beating Representative Angie Craig. How much did Operation Metro Surge play in to what we saw on Tuesday? Yeah, I think it had a lot to do with it. You know, the trauma that happened in Operation Metro Surge, it's still fresh in people's minds, and it touches him at the visceral issue because of not only, you know, all of the havoc that ICE brought to it, but they also killed two of our citizens. And I think that people are really thinking about that. But here's the other thing I'll say that I don't think that people are missing. Turnout was also heavy because... I think that Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, and then to a certain extent, Senator Amy Klobuchar is talking about the future. They're sending a message out there for you to vote for something, right? Not the letter of two evils. Not the status quo. I'm Anna Garcia, host of True Crime News, the podcast. across the country with Abdul El-Sayed and Michigan and Zohran Mamdani in New York, that they're actually saying, listen, we, this is, this is how society is going to change. This is for the better. Here's the things that we're going to do for you. And I think that that really motivated people, especially millennials. Amy, the Trump effect. What did it have on anything we saw on Tuesday? Well, for sure, Metro Surge around the U.S. Senate, the DFL race. I think, I think obviously less in the GOP race because it just didn't, it seemed to actually not have a great effect on the GOP governor's race. But it's going to definitely on the general. And that's what we've got to kind of turn our eyes to now. And that's going to be about inflation. It is going to be about affordability. I think that progressives have been doing a good job around the country of really feeling people's pain on the economy. And that has been something that has led to their successes as well. I don't think this is a big movement like necessarily their solutions, but they are the people that are talking about it. They're talking about. $4 gallon gas. And they're talking about the cost of folks' health care. And the fact that food prices have, we just become accustomed to the outrageous amount of money we're paying at the grocery store and started to almost accept it in a way like, this is just how it's going to be forever. But progressives are saying, you know, they're really talking about the affordability issue. And so that all tracks back to Trump and tariffs in the Iran war and in all of those things. And so that's definitely going to be the ballot in November. And the Republicans are going to need to have a stronger message on that. Okay. Let's look ahead to this general election as you've been talking about. Jeff, how nasty are these ads going to be? We've seen it when the primary, I can't imagine the money that's going to be poured into these elections. Yeah, I mean, I think that the ads are going to get nasty, especially because the independent expenditures in the pack where the candidates actually don't have any control over that. And those ads are particularly nasty. So I do think that they're going to be nasty. I think people are getting kind of like, because the primary has had so many ads, I don't know, and I think you can ask Angie Craig, I don't know how effective those become. I think that the actual candidates in their vision and them outlining why they're the best. a candidate and the best person to lead the state. I think that's what people are going to be looking for. And I will say this, that, you know, with the fraud issue, you know, people are being adjudicated. The legislature did a lot of work in order to kind of prevent that from happening again. On the GOP side, the problem that they had is that President Trump keeps doubling down on the things that Amy just talked about. The war on Iran seems to be going on forever. The tariffs seem to be, you know, every time he gets upset, he throws another tear. And just the other day in the headline, we read that ICE is going to use shocked gloves in order to subdue people. That isn't helpful for the GOP. Amy, last word on this one. Going into the general election here, how do you see these ads? You know, and Jeff talks about the fact that it's outside groups. Sometimes it's not the candidate, but man, it's going to get nasty.

Well, it's going to get, Nancy, and it's going to be a lot of them. We're not going to see spending, we've not seen spending like what's going to be spending at U.S. Senate race, because this opens up the map. This is a seat that Democrats would never have thought they had to defend. Now they will. Republicans will see a pickup opportunity, and that rate for U.S. Senate is really close, you know, the control of the U.S. Senate. And so what we're going to see is John Thune is seeing an opening. Chuck Schumer is seeing a danger, and they are going to spend a lot of money in Minnesota like we have not seen. Okay, here we go. We're off and running to the general election. Amy and Jeff, thanks so much for joining us. We'll have a lot to talk about. That's for sure. All right. Sounds good. Thanks to both of you. Have a good weekend. Amy Fredrickson and Jeff Hayden.
