20 segmentsOkay, taking a look at the markets right now. S&P 500, a little change, third straight winning week. Pete, we're headed for. Pete Nogherian joins us now on the John Schuster, Cold Welp banker hotline. What are you looking at and analyzing here this morning? Well, first off, I have to say, I blame Josh for this whole thing popping, by the way, whatever's going on there. Wait a minute. I think you sound good. I think you sound good. Maybe you change something here, Pete. Anyway. It's too funny. You know what's been so impressive, Vanita. It's absolutely incredible when you look at this earning season once again, started with the financials weeks ago, and then all of a sudden we started getting the technology. Now we're getting into Walmart and Target and those in the next week or so. There's... is that we are absolutely crushing it. And I think so many people are so surprised that we're just continuing to do that. I mean, the earnings beats are still at 85%. The revenue beats are still at 80%. Earnings growth itself is up 41% year over year. I mean, I just look at these numbers, and I think you just got to sort of take a look at that and say, Is it right? And this is the right side of things because we're talking about the money. And it's a lot different when you actually put the money out there to do what you're doing, whether or not that means you're going to a McDonald's or you're going to a buying things from 3M, whatever it might be. that's money, and that is something that is very factual as opposed to a lot of people saying, well, you know, things are really slowing down. Are they really slowing down? I look at what we're seeing out there, and, you know, it's amazing because we take a look at inflation and so forth, second consecutive month where we've kind of cooled off a little bit. So I think you just have to really listen to what we're seeing and look very closely at what's going on within the markets themselves because they're very... very healthy right now. And they have been, it seems like, quarter after quarter in terms of what things are looking like. And yes, we pay more at the pump. I get it. But, you know, we all know why that is. And at some point in time, that's going to pull back even further than it has, I think. And certainly, and apologies again for the audio. You are popping. Sorry, Pete. We'll figure this out. We've got an engineer working on it. Inflation. still, you know, you talk about the price of things, you know, inflation cooled for the second stream month. Yeah, and I think that a lot of people were surprised by that. I'm not necessarily all that surprised by that. I mean, let's be honest. What is really, you know, you and I've talked about this, you know, every Friday, but the reality is where is inflation really starting from? And when you take a look at it, it all comes down to oil because oil is in plastics and it's in just about everything. And the cruise ships have to have their oil. And the big, the 18 wheelers.
have to have their, you know, diesel. And we all want gas. And there's so many different parts of this whole thing when you look at oil. So as it's coming down, it makes sense that the inflation levels would be coming down just a little bit. So... I keep looking at inflation from that perspective. And I think that's the right way to read it right now because that is such a huge influence on the market as we speak. Okay. Kyler Murray at the helm, QB1. You knew it. Everybody knew it. You got to see a little bit of training camp. Give us your assessment. Yeah, I'll tell you what, he looks great. People don't really realize. They look at him and they heard of all the negatives, but there's far more positives, I think, than negatives to Kyler. And I really look forward to it. You know, I even had an opportunity to watch him when he was at Oklahoma because I've got some friends down there and they were telling me about this great quarterback. He's a pretty special kid. And I'll tell you what, what I was most impressed with, though, it was great to watch Kyler and how he was doing things. And I think JJ's a little bit down right now, and he's got to pull himself back up a little bit because of the fact that he's going to be QB2, at least to start the season. So we'll see how that plays out. But that defensive line has improved so much for the Minnesota Vikings, and they did it mostly through the draft itself. I was so impressed with what I saw up in front of me as far as I'm 10 feet away from these guys. And I forget how big the human beings are in the sport of football, both at the gophers. Because yesterday I was with the gophers, and then I went over and saw the Vikings practice. Wow. I mean, that Viking defense, if our linebackers can move around really, really well, I think they're going to be able to. Those big guys up front are really just amazing to see. And it's a testament to, I think, the defense that's going to be a lot better this year than we were last year. Okay, your assessment of Drake Lindsay then, for the gophers. I had a great time talking to him. What a great young man he is. He is a physical, just an incredible speed. I'm looking at the guy going, wow, he is chiseled. He's six foot five. He can throw the ball really well. He threw the ball well yesterday in practice. He did have an interception, but you know what? Good to have those in practice. And I think he's going to learn from that. And he's a smart kid. I'll tell you what, I keep seeing his name pop up higher and higher as potentially. When he gets to potentially the NFL, he's going to be one of those kind of guys. And I'll tell you, he looked great yesterday in practice, I thought. And you know what? Get those intersections out of the way at practice. We won't have them during the games, hopefully. Okay. Yeah, that is a good thing. Get those, work out those kinks in practice because it would.
Team minus three weeks until Gofer Football. I'm so excited for this game versus Eastern Illinois. There's something about Huntington Bank Stadium on a beautiful summer evening with the start of football. Come on. What's not to love about that, right? Yeah, and I'll tell you what, if you've never been there and you want to go on your own, but I'd love to go there with you. Go to a practice with the Golden Gophers, and PJ Fleck is an amazing guy, the way he runs those practices, and how they move all over the football field, and they have multiple fields. So they're separate from each other, the offensive defense, then they go up against one another, they're running, they're always on the run, and so is PJ. It's amazing to watch. And I'll tell you, I'm so impressed with how disciplined they are. It's really, really great to see. And I'm looking forward to being at the stadium as well. It's going to be awesome. And I think that the season looks very, very good for the gophers. Okay. You're always optimistic, and that's what I love about you, Pete. We'll see how it goes. Have a great weekend. Thank you so much. All right. Thank you. See you. Pete Nigerian, football and finance. Again, apologies for our phone and internet problems. We're working on it. Traffic and weather next.
