Strange for a Thursday. But she'll be at Reliance Stadium and then back with us in the house on Friday. After the one year after he bought a controlling interest of the Lakers, Mark Walter is out. He's now selling the Lakers. Oh, and he's making a handsome profit as well. He's going to sell it to a team led by Josh Jared Kushner, businessman Josh Jared Kushner, yes, the brother of Jared Kushner and former CEO of Disney, Bob Iger. The package is a $12 billion, $12 plus billion. And again,

Mark Walter bought the Lakers last year for $10 billion, selling it for 12 plus. So that's a 20% is a 20%. interest on that investment over the course of just one year. So that's not too bad. New report came out from LAPD blamed poor planning and coordination for issues with the LAPD response to the protests last year because of immigration policies. But apart from that, the report said police did pretty well in the face of the fact that they had unprecedented unrest. It's sometimes devolved into violence and vandalism. The department spent more than $12 million on overtime over the course of just two weeks. They made 435 arrests, and it described in detail some of the weapons that were used against the LAPD. So, yeah, you could argue that they were up against a mob that they never expected when it came to what they saw in those protests. So there was a story out of the Bay Area, the San Francisco Bay Area a couple of days ago out of Martinez. 36-year-old guy accused of fatally stabbing a 68-year-old mate named Todd Stewart outside of his home in the town of Martinez. Investigators used some license plate recognition technology, some tips to track down Marcos Iriarte Valdez, 36 years old, like I said. He was arrested a few days ago. He's being held on more than a million dollars bail in connection with this stabbing death. And at this point, they've said that it was unprovoked. He was on a pretrial release at the time in connection with residential burglaries that had occurred back in April. He was arrested Tuesday for violating the terms of his home detention when it comes to the Orinda case and then was released on Wednesday, on his own recognizance, referred back to home detention, and then he stabs the guy on Thursday. It's real hard to go to jail. in the state of California. It's really hard. Like I said, this guy was accused of residential burglaries, sent to home detention, broke his home detention, was picked up again, sent back home because obviously that worked the first time, and then comes out and stabs a guy. Oh, did I mention the fact that this guy should have been held on a federal immigration detainer? No, I didn't mention that. but he should have. And that's not the story that came out from the TV station in the Bay Area that covered this story. But it is out there now. There's new plan federal authorities are using to try to get around California's sanctuary state law as it exists right now. This is an operation. It's called Operation Guardian Angel.

has so far picked up 360 plus previously deported illegal migrants that used the federal law to defeat the controversial sanctuary state rule. That rule prohibits local police from cooperating with immigration agents even if they wanted to. So in this case, there were, for example, agents from Immigration Customs Enforcement at the federal building downtown L.A. where they rushed from the federal building to Twin Towers and grabbed a criminal that was being let out of county. Under this operation, the feds can identify foreign nationals who have been arrested by police for local crimes and... quickly apply to them new federal charges so that ICE officers can take them into custody before they're released back into the public, back into the neighborhoods to continue the problems that they've caused in the first place. Local jails are legally required to hand over criminal illegal migrants if they are presented with a federal warrant. But it's again on the federal government to come up without warrant the first place to hand them over. I'll continue this story here in just a second in terms of... how they're able to do this and if this is going to survive before somebody in the state level government decides to blow the whistle on him. You've talked a lot about those prediction markets. You know, you've seen commercials for Polymarket and Kalshi. Those are just a couple. Those are the two biggest ones. There is a new push to outlaw not just the markets themselves. I know, for example, New York has launched an investigation into Polymarket and Kalshi. But the things that you can bet on. on these poly markets will astound you. And some of them, there is a concern that it's going to prompt people to do bad things in order to make money off of it. So we'll talk about that at the bottom of the hour. I mentioned this story. Federal authorities have started something called Operation Guardian Angel. It's a way for them to... Get federal warrants for illegal aliens who are in criminal custody, but will be released, where they can get them before they are out in the public. I mean, literally, they're let out of Twin Towers. Federal agents are there waiting for them with a federal warrant. So that they're not just released into the wild once again because they're not supposed to be in the country anyway. And the state of California does not allow local officers to deal with federal agents. It basically prohibits local police from cooperating with immigration agents even if they wanted to.

So as I mentioned, this has come to a head once again because in Martinez up in the Bay Area, a 36-year-old guy who has citizenship in Spain but is technically identified as an illegal immigrant out of Venezuela is now accused of stabbing a 68-year-old guy on the front lawn of his home. And all of it was caught on surveillance video. The Department of Homeland Security says this guy's a Venezuelan illegal immigrant. He committed this crime in, quote, Sanctuary, California. And the Department of Homeland Security said, Gavin Newsom must not release this murderer from jail and turn him over to us so we can remove him from our nation. Sanctuary politicians must stop putting politics about public safety. This type of insanity leads to more crimes and more innocent victims. It goes on to say, Because sanctuary cities refused to work with law, with ICE law enforcement, criminal illegal aliens are released from jails into American communities to perpetuate more crimes. And again, this guy had been popped for a series of residential burglaries but was put on home detention. He broke home detention, was arrested, and then put back on, you know, home detention. Because I guess it worked the first time. Here's an example of this operation that's going on, Operation Guardian Angel. A group of seven people came out of Twin Towers that had been recently arrested and charged with crimes. Domestic battery, reckless driving causing injury, illegal firearms possession, etc. All of them, all seven of those people, had been previously convicted of coming into the United States illegally and had been deported. Now, I'm not saying that they were in here illegally, never been charged or awaiting a court date. These are seven guys who had come into the country illegally, were already deported, which now makes them eligible for a federal felony charge of illegal re-entry. Some of them also looking at the possibility of other federal crimes as well, some of them with lengthy rap sheets. This is who... The Operation Guardian Angel is targeting. Several of them actually told their stories to reporters at a processing center beneath the federal building. And a reporter for the California Post sat down. with a guy named Laro Rivas. Criminal record included arrests for convictions, uh, sorry, arrests and convictions for weapons offenses, grand theft, drunk driving. He said he'd already served eight months in jail for carrying a gun in a public space. And he says that he's glad to be headed back to Mexico. I regret what I did. I understand I made mistakes. I want to be sent home now. I want to see my family. Daniel Garcia, another guy. He'd been arrested by cops a couple of weeks before this on a domestic battery charge, previously deported for illegal entry to the U.S. years ago, and that was the only thing on his rap sheet. But that's enough to get federal warrant. He said to get back into the United States, he spent $10,000 on a human smuggler, let him across the border on foot.

He said he owed money to the drug cartels in his hometown of Morelos. And he's terrified to go back. Another guy said he'd been arrested a couple of days prior for a car wreck that injured a couple of women. He was originally charged with felony DUI but had been prosecuted for reckless driving and says the whole thing, it was just an accident. That guy's also got a criminal history. Multiple convictions for drunk driving, violating a domestic protection order, sneaking back into the United States across the border and says he will do the same thing again if he's deported. That's who they're going after. with this operation. So there was two other guys. Let's see. The two other guys that were, or two of the other guys, a 70-year-old guy, Jaime Le Desma. An illegal migrant from Mexico convicted a couple of years ago, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14. He was deported in 2023, crossed the border again, and he was convicted again of illegally re-entering the United States. 55-year-old guy out of San Luis Obispo illegally here from Mexico, deported 25 years ago and six years ago. Oh, his criminal history includes a rape from 1995. This is not... That's who they're going after. That's who they want to get out of the country. All right. Up next. Is there a line when it comes to betting? What are you willing to bet on? I saw a commercial today for Kalshi. The very first time I've seen this commercial, I'll try to get it so I can play it for you when we come back. But it was a description of what you can bet on on Kalshi on that platform. And there are lawmakers that are concerned that the stuff you can bet on is going to force people to commit crimes or at least give them a reason to. I'll explain we come back. The rebuilding has started to some degree in Altadena and the Palisades after the fires a year and a half ago. There is a new push from Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, among others, to prevent prediction market platforms. Think Calci Polymarket. After more than a million dollars was wagered on the wildfires. Somebody was betting on the wildfires. And I'll say it this way.

They were betting on things like how large in acreage will this thing finally be once it's declared controlled or these things, I should say. You could wager on how many homes would be lost. You could wager on something like, will President Trump visit the Palisades and things like during his news conference, will he say specific words? All of these very... esoteric and minuscule little things that you can wager on on these markets. I mentioned the commercial I saw earlier this morning for Kalshi, and it was a series of interviews with people who have wagered on the platform and what they do with it. What they, what is their, what's their thing? One guy said that he wagers almost daily on the temperature in Chicago. That you can wager on whether or not the temperature, as an example, on Calci right now, the highest temperature in L.A. today. There's $200,000 being wagered on the temperature in L.A. today. Most people believe that it will be either 78 or 79 degrees. Below that, 76 to 77. Again, this idea that you're doing this is such a weird and people are making money at it. Now, if you're dedicated to it, we've done the story before where it's a very small percentage of people on these poly markets, sorry, on these prediction markets that are actually making money at what they're doing. There's a letter that was sent by the senators, Alex Padilla and Schiff, among others, to the Commodity Futures Trading Chairman, Commission Chairman, that guard rails be put in place to prevent anybody from profiting from wildfires or other deadly disasters. And they said, and this is the reason, a bet like this, a wager like this, raises safety concerns and the potential that it's going to spur arson. We've seen this happen before. One of the guys who used to run the teleprompter for President Trump could bet on the words that he would say and make all kinds of money. For example, Todd Blanche, the attorney general, the new attorney general, held a news conference this morning. and you could wager on specific terms that he was going to use. And there's $22,000 on the line. It's not that you're going to win that because you're betting against other people, but you could win, depending on which and how much you put in, money if he said the word pool or vandalism. Or if he said the word AI or the words artificial intelligence. These types of things. So a guy who was running the teleprompter for President Trump could go on and bet on the mention because he already knows what's going to be in the speech. And he made a handsome couple hundred thousand dollars on the whole thing. There were people who were betting on the temperature in the city of Paris.

And what they did was they found the official temperature, sorry, the official thermometer that's used to measure this whole thing. And somebody would walk up to this thing with a hair dryer. a lighter, a hand warmer, anything. As long as you get it to the official thermometer, you could drive that thing up and you start laying wagers on exactly how hot it's going to be. You're going to clean up. Listen to how specific this is. Yeti, you know, the coolers, the Yeti company has an earnings call coming up. And you can bet on what words are going to be mentioned in the earnings call. Right now, leading the pack is the term NFL. Right behind that, TikTok. That's how specific these things are. Listen, you want to spend money on it? It's your money. You do what you want. As long as you don't go cheat the system like the teleprompter guy did or the hairdryer guy did in Paris or an arson, perhaps, arsonist, I should say. As long as you don't do that, you can do whatever the hell you want with your money. I don't care. But a suggestion that you have... The ability to wager on people's death. It hasn't gotten that far, but there is a concern that that's what's next. You can, by the way, you can wager on the success or failure of experimental cancer drugs. That's a little untoward, isn't it? That seems a little egregious. That's also one of those things that you just, you know. If you're so much of an addict that you're live betting the blanket Sakamoto match in tennis at the ATP Challenger in Brownsburg, you might want to talk to somebody. Like, it feels like that's, uh, that's getting a little deep in the weeds, if you ask me. And I'd stick with my football pool. So we were going to, it's the way we're going to do it. I did mention this, though. The New York City Council is investigating, uh, Polly Market and Cal She. There's a couple others. Coinbase, Gemini Titan for deceptive marketing, uh, marketing. And they say targeting of miners. In a letter that was addressed to all the CEOs, they've asked for details about promotional videos that appear to depict fake trades and promoted insider trading on social media. And the concern, at least in the New York City investigation, is whether or not they have been targeting minors to get involved in all of this as well. So not great. So maybe life was a little bit better when...

I noticed it helps. I did something the other day. I was working out on Monday, I guess it was. And for an hour, I did not listen to any. I wasn't listening to music, which I love. I wasn't listening to podcasts, which I love. I wasn't doing any of that. I was just in my own head for 45 minutes. A little scary place to be. It's time to clean it out every once in a while. But that's the way we did it. That's the way it was. If you're my age, you remember the 90s fondly. It should. And that's, you know, long before everybody had cell phones, long before there was, you know, ubiquitous Internet Wi-Fi everywhere you went. You had to connect with people not a Wi-Fi signal. A guy wrote in Slate, Dan Coy's wrote in Slate, a fun article to read through because he's advocating for bringing back some of the great things that made the 90s what they were. and you had to organize your own fun. You had to call people. You had to, for example, we kind of made this joke yesterday about parties at Chico when Shannon and I were at Chico, different times, but similar. I was there in the early 90s. She was there in the late 90s. But this idea that you, if you're going to go to a party, you had to hear about the, I mean, actually hear it with your ear, hear about the party, or someone gave you a flyer about the Sigma New Party that was going on that night, or something like that. Now it's all social media. You could see it. You could pass it around. It's easier to, it's probably easier to get the word out more quickly, but it's less personal, obviously. And... One of the things that this guy writes about is his days and nights were more memorable when I had to watch whatever was on TV, or I had to read whatever was in the newspaper, or I had to go to whatever bar his friends told the answering machine they were at. Like you get a message from somebody, hey, we're at LaSalle's, we'll be here until 11, as opposed to the constant text messages that we get. And he says he's ready to recapture a little bit of that spirit. He's ready to loosen the iron grip. Loosen the iron grip. The out-of-control modern world has encouraged him to maintain. And for example, he says he's going to do a weekly challenge. And he's inviting people to join him in this. Six missions. to unplug hangout party like it's 1996. And he offers you an opportunity to actually put your email in there. And he says, you're going to get an email every Monday that offers you this challenge, this designed to bring a touch of that golden age. You're going to go out? Sometimes you're going to stay in, you're going to hang out, you're going to keep in touch, you're going to do a road trip, all of that to develop some sort of practical strategy for incorporating all of these techniques into your everyday. Make you more present in your own life. And what's fun is here's...

He at least acknowledges you can't do 1990 without your current phone system. I mean, that's where a lot of people get their emails to receive the instructions on how to ignore their email. Kind of ironic, but. He says we're connected to our smartphones. He's not anti-phone necessarily. And at no point is he going to urge you to get rid of your phone completely, you know, throw it into the ocean or whatever. But how would you find your way back? Because nobody knows how directions anyway. Cell phones are tied to the modern world. And he says he's not going to argue that they don't make our lives better. He says, I like being able to text my kids. Sometimes you got to use your phone. I mean, how many places lately? Whether it's a baseball game or a store or an amusement park, you can't use, they will not accept cash. They're unable, unable to actually accept cash because they've gone all digital when it comes to payment. So you've got to have your phone with you every once in a while. It is funny because he talks about this kind of the connection that we're all craving so desperately. How convenient has it been to think of a thing that you need, go on Amazon and have it delivered to your house within 24 hours? I could go off. I'm not going to do a full segment on it. I'll just say this. Hamilton Beach is crap. Hamilton Beach irons specifically break every four months, period. It's designed obsolescence. Hamilton Beach wants you back as a customer, so they destroy their irons from the inside. Is it Bluetooth? Is it Wi-Fi? I don't know. I just know that they suck. They're awful. I finally made a decision, I'm going sunbeam. Not only am I going sunbeam, I'm going sunbeam classic. Yeah, full steam, extra steam, three different shutoff options. That's my kind of iron. Now, what do I do? When my iron goes boobs up, I got to figure out what to do with it. I'm going to throw it away and I'm going to replace it. Do I drive to Walmart? Do I drive some? Do I drive to Target? Or do I just sit in my own flatulence with Amazon up on the computer and get Sunbeam Classic? Hey, while I'm at it? Hmm. Have you read Kurt Vonnegut what he had to say about why he goes to the post office to buy one stamp and the conversation that he had with his wife? No. I think it's pretty applicable, and it's the reason I still go in and pay my monthly credit card off at the credit union, even though the woman's extraordinarily mean to me. Nobody wants to spend... Oh, here's this guy again. No, nobody wants to spend their whole life like a veal cap sitting in front of a screen, and you do these daily chores and errands just so you have some contact with other human beings, even if you don't need to do it that way. Yeah. And it's weird. We... As wired as we are for that kind of connection and communication, we also find it so easy to just sit in our own stink and do nothing. And I don't know why. I don't know why that is. I don't know. I sit here and talk about it. We advocate. Turn off your phone. Go meet somebody. Go to a park. Take a class. Do pottery. Whatever. Play a sport. All of these things. But sometimes it's just easier to sit. And sitting is the new smoking. And smoking is the new death or something like that. I'll get it. We'll figure it out. This is KFI.
