This is News Radio 740, KTRH, Houston, and I Heart Radio station, guaranteed human. Now, the latest news, weather, and traffic. It's more of what matters to you from the John Moore Services Studios. It is Friday morning 5 a.m. here on Houston's morning news. I'm Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett. Among our top stories this F are, the left. Well, they hate it when HBD cooperates with ICE. Trump cranks the media with his state of emergency for the midterms comment. And coming up at 508, 10 parenting rules bloomers grew up with that millennials refuse to enforce. Details in the minutes ahead. First, let's check out that morning drive for the first time. Hey, Skymike. Hey, I got a vehicle fire on the East Tech's freeway. This is southbound at Townsend coming into Umbl. We're taking up two, one, two, three right lanes here. This is on the southbound. Watch out from the Sanjusino River Bridge. I'm Skywhite in the generator supercenter.com traffic center. From our KTRH, top tax defenders, 24-hour weather center for today. Looking at plenty of sunshine, hot, humid. But as hot as it's going to be this weekend. Jeff Enos is about 95 today. We're going to be flirting with 100 tomorrow through Wednesday. We'll check it all out in the tropics as well when we talk to Jeff in about nine minutes. Temperature right now is 80. And your official severe weather station, News Radio 740, KTRH. It's time now for the news. Here's Cliff Saunders. Good morning. It's 5.01. We're sponsored by Synergenic Health in our top story this hour. It's just another two on the two belt of vice officers who are under 9,000% increase in death threats. An actual 1,400% increase in actual threats. Orders are Tom Homan and confirming ICE will be adding zap gloves to deal with illegal aliens that aren't cooperating. Of course, the left is complaining even though this would actually prevent. Deaths. Here at home, HPD reportedly contacted ICE dozens of times, and this follows the months of fearmongering from the left about HPD's cooperation with the feds. In total, only six of those 34 service calls actually led to someone being in ICE custody. The complaint about something minute, we have too many contacts a year with citizens. It's very low level the number of times we've had to call ICE. Doug Griffith with the Houston Police Officers Union says this is all just about attacking the Trump administration. We have members of our city council that want to fight national issues at a local level. That's not how it works. They need to pay attention of what's going on in the city, Houston. He says the uproar over ICE arrests will likely continue as long as Trump is in office. Ethan Buchanan, News Radio 740, KTRH. Speaking of the unhinged left, Texas Democrat Congressman Joaquin Castro wants several small towns around the San Antonio area to stop enforcing parts of federal immigration law. That's not going over well with Republicans. A sitting congressman saying no, don't.
Let's protect the illegal immigrants. It's kind of their mantra right now. Chris Coons leads the Bear County Republican Party. They backed these 287 agreements, which are seen as a force multiplier for the feds. Last week, we all know that President Trump issued two executive orders to tackle birth tourism. Turns out Texas was already addressing the problem. It was last month that Governor Greg Abbott signed his own executive order over birth tourism. To make sure that any claim or allegation of birth tourism in Texas will be fully prosecuted. William Gein with AlleyPak says Texas is once again leading the way. That can reasonably help mitigate these type of immigration vectored attacks and exploitations. We want to see them do that. And that includes suing a Houston hospital for facilitating over 1,000 births to Chinese nationals. Jeff Andy Biggs News Radio 740, KTRAH. 504, Houstonians will be able to vote on marijuana enforcement standards and a ban on no-knock warrants in November. The measure would require marijuana enforcement to be the lowest priority for police. Most cops don't prioritize marijuana, especially if it's just usage size. But sometimes it's helpful to be able to have that on hand to be able to detain someone or even arrest them if there's a bigger crime and process. Former city councilman Greg Travis says it's all part of an effort to take tools away from police. On the national front, President Trump isn't ruling out a potential emergency election declaration ahead of the midterms. The SAVE Act remains in limbo, so something needs to be done for election security. There needs to be parity across the United States on how our election laws are not only implemented, but also how they are enforced. Debbie Lindstrom of Citizens Defending Freedom says this is available to the president, and from IDs to cleaning voter rolls, the order needs to walk a fine line. We want to make it easy to vote, but hard to cheat. She says laws without penalties are just suggestions. Andre Parrard, News Radio 740, KTRH. A rising star in the Democrat Party is under fire for comments he made about reparations seven years ago. There is a debt unpaid. I think it is a very, very difficult question. That is Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, who was elected two years after making that comment on a podcast. 505, the Trump administration plans to squeeze Iran economically even more than they have been. Watch this space for more announcements coming next week because we are going to apply measures like have never been seen in the history of economic. isolation on a country. That is Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Newsmax as oil rises to $82 and $8 a barrel with Dow futures down 71 points this morning. The new Social Security cost of living adjustment estimate for 2027 is up. Openthebooks.com's Jeremy Portnoy says the poll show Americans don't fully understand, though, the problems with Social Security. 80% of voters have said that they oppose any cuts to Social Security.
But at the same time, 80% of voters also say they want Congress to balance the federal budget within the next two years. The 2027 cost of living adjustment will be announced on October 14th. It's 506. The Texans lose their preseason opener to the Chargers last night at Reliant Stadium 27 to 7.7. Most of the starters didn't play. The team hosts the Raiders next Thursday. The Astros take on the Mariners at Dijkin Park tonight. Pre-game at 6 on Sports Talk 790. The game at 790 and KTRH. The Stros lead the Rangers by two full games in the AL West. The Maritors are five-back. And I'm Cliff Saunders on Houston's News Weather and Traffic Station. News Radio 740. The human experience. Human history happens here. I have tears of my eyes. I can just screen this life that we live on News Radio 740, KTRH. Guaranteed human. Oh, I've got rules. We've all got rules. We're all brought up with rules. 507 is their time here in Houston's morning news. It's always interesting to compare generations in how they're raised and how the rules have changed since when we were kids. especially between the boomers and the millennials. Of course, the millennials were raised by boomers, and boomers were raised by the silent generation. And I think the boomers were a lot less lax, or they were more lax, I should say, on the rules than their parents were. Every generation seems to have gotten more and more lax or changed the rules. For example, Spanking and corporal punishment, which we've talked about on our program many times. Are you a spanker or a timeout person? I employed a little bit of both. Spanking was only used for rare occasions. I was spanked on a regular basis as a child. Can't think of a time where I didn't deserve it. But spanking was part of the way we were brought up. The clean plate rule. Do you remember the clean plate rule? No dessert unless you clean your plate or just plain, you aren't leaving the table until you clean your plate. Now, that really turned out to be not a very good rule because it led to a lot of overeating. If you're full, you shouldn't have to finish your plate. Now, if you're refusing to eat something just because you're being a picky pearl, then that's a different story. But to force kids to clean their plate when they're full, that doesn't make any sense. forcing physical affection. Give grandma a kiss. Remember how you used, when you were a kid, if you were a boomer, when you were a kid, you had a, when you had a relative there, like a grandparent or whatever, you were forced to give them a hug or a kiss, even if you didn't want to do it. Millennial parents don't do that. Seena not heard, that's gone by the wayside. Because I said so, which was, why do I have to do? Whatever it is, because I said so. No longer is it considered to be a valid excuse. Not that it ever was a valid excuse. It was never meant to be. It was just that, hey, those are the rules. I'm in charge. Do as I say. Tough love, threat lines like, I'll give you something to cry about or this is going to hurt me more than it hurts you. My dad loved that line.
And I've never said, no, it's not. This is definitely going to hurt me more than it hurts you. But if you have any more, you want to add to our list, feel free to do so you go to the I Heart Radio out, KTRH, first name where you're calling from. Boomer rules that are no longer enforced. Of course, at our house it's called Wilders Rules. That's what. My mom's name was. She had her own set of rules. Didn't necessarily conform to any known etiquette in America, but it was her rules, and you live by her rules. 510, time for traffic and weather together. You're talking about kissing relatives? Yes. Oh, my, okay, so I'm a... Give her grandma, big smooch. I was a cute little kid, and we had Aunt Martha, and Aunt Martha had an eye patch. Come here, Mikey, dude. Give me some sugar. Oh! She's got an eye patch. I'm still having flashbacks here. All right. Let's hit it right there. Your night in just got legendary. That's IHeart Advertising. think.com Albert from Kingwood's on the Eastex Freeway, dude. Morning, Sky Mike. What that? Inbound just south of border. On the left hand or inside lane, there is a stalled out car. All right. That's on the inbound side here, right at the river. Look out. Albert from Kingwood, give me some sugar, baby. I-10, hello. Hey, Sky, Mike, Rodney, hardworking east side. Oh, that's great. Let's bring back an old name. The beast is wide open from the 330 I-10 split all the way into downtown. Downtown's back. up to the two lanes. Okay. And the visor side of I-10 is low and wide open all the way out to the beltway. Rodney, you knocked it out of the park right there. I'm in the Ability Tree Experts Traffic Center. From our KTRH, top tax defenders, 24-hour weather, sir. Time to check him with Jeff Eno. He's got the weekend forecast. Looks like we're going to be flirting with 100 degrees this weekend.
Yes, sir. 95 today. That is, quote, unquote, the coolest it will be. Heat index around 107 today. A stray shower thunderstorm could pop up later on in the morning. I'll keep an eye on that. Look at radar, mostly sunny. Tonight, partly cloudy, low near 80, and then that's it for any rain opportunities. Sunny Saturday, up to 98. Heat index around 110 may start looking at those heat advisories for tomorrow and then Sunday. Sunny and upper 90s, I may need a therapy session after that iPad store. Happy note. Give me some sugar. Current temperatures 80 at your official severe weather station. News Radio 740 KTRH. Our 59 inbound at the loop is always a problem. KTRH time-saving traffic. Next on the 10. 520s are time here in Houston's morning news. All right, the progressive left has decided that they want nothing to do with artificial intelligence or data centers. They're all in on this now. They're all in on banning AI and data centers, which as you know is not. Not a realistic goal, nor a goal that we want to have. Do we want to seriously look at the power needs of these things? Yes. Do we seriously want to look at where we put these things because of the noise they make? Yes. But the genie's out of the bottle on this one. There's an AI race. AI is here to stay. It's not going anywhere. We'll have more on the story coming up next. First, though, let's do a little traffic and weather together, starting with you, Skymine. All right, East Tech's Freeway. Look out for the AI and also look out for this vehicle fire. It's on camera. One, two, three, seven, if you're following it home on the East Tech's Freeway, Townsend, inbound. It's a vehicle fire. Now, judging by the way they're set up here, it looks like everybody's okay. We got a left lane, two left lanes getting by. It's about a six-minute skunch here. Young Albert from Kingwood found a problem. further up in Katie Porter. Inbound just out the border. On the left hand or inside a lane, there is a stalled out car. All right, that's going to cause a bit of a smunch, nothing big. Just watch out for all those flashy lights. Give me some sugar, Clifford. I'm Sky Mike. The ability. Tree experts. Traffic Center. Prova, KTRH, top tax defenders, 24-hour weather center. It looks like it's mostly sunny today. Chance of a stray shower storm this afternoon, primarily 95. Then tomorrow all the way through Wednesday, sunny with a high near 100 each day heat index up around 110. Current temperature is 80 at your official severe weather station. News Radio 740 KTRH. Live is standing by in our newsroom. He has an update on some of our top Friday stories. The Trump Treasury Department says the cartels have taken a hit on profits from human smuggling. The two-year-old Harris County toddler allegedly beaten by her mom's boyfriend has died. National Hurricane Center continues to monitor two areas for potential tropical development. At the latest news anytime at KTRH.com, our next update is at 5.30.
Pasadena. A living clearly. Reliable. KTRH, traffic, and weather. Next on the 10. All right. You are exactly, sir, the kind of people the data centers love. Could you go to work for the state of Texas so that changed the governor's mind? about banning some of these data centers from rural areas, for example, because it sounds like you make it sound like you don't care about any of those things. That's fine. I can tell you the progressive far left is decided they're all going to jump on the bandwagon. They're all going to be anti-AI, anti-data center. So here they are complaining. as they are want to do, and we get reaction to all of it. I can start by taxing the data centers that power AI. Michiganers don't want data centers. No to data centers. At this point, no more data centers. We can't let the left do to AI what they did to nuclear power in the 1970s. They paralyzed an industry. that could have prevented this cascade of global energy crises we've seen for 40 years. And if you think we can pause AI, do you think Russia or China or India, they're going to do the same thing? Of course not. These lefties, instead of solving for X, they want to ban math. It makes no sense. I've said this before. If you haven't integrated AI into your life, you will watch life pass you by. It adds... 10 points to your IQ. I'm now at 205. It's incredible. I use AI for everything, debating theories to finding out like 10 easy tricks when I'm playing a cheap guitar. There's so much stuff. I think what the socialists do, just often is they capitalize on fear. because they have no achievements that they can champion. So if you can't make something, you frame what other people make as terrifying. They don't understand abundance. They understand limitation. They talk about water. It uses so much water. Almond orchards use 90 times more water in California alone than data centers do nationwide. The water used by data centers are non-potable. Is that what you say non-potable? often recycled, constantly recycled throughout, and they're improving on it. It's not competing with drinking supplies the way agriculture or almonds do. So do not fall for this, and I'm telling you, all this Sturm and Drang, is that the words? Strum and Drang, whatever. It's not going to matter. It's not going to matter because it's going to be just like the internet. You're going to have it wherever you go and it's going to change your life. That's Greg Gutfield, of course, on the five. All right. By the way, do you say data or data? Because I'm hearing like a 50-50 mix. I've always said data. I never pronounced it data, but I'm hearing some people do that. I suppose I should look that up. Is this like tomato tomato?
By the way, whoever says tomato, it was used as an example, tomato tomato, potato, potato. Nobody ever calls it a potato or tomato, right? Nobody I've ever heard anyway. 526, time to take a look at your money. Tyson Foods is shrinking its beef business as the historic cattle shortage squeezes meatpackers. The company's closing two more plants and putting another up for sale. Tyson plans to anchor its beef operation around just three plants in Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas. The domestic cattle herd remains near the lowest level in about five decades, raising prices for the animals that meatpackers buy. I'm Courtney Donahoe, Bloomberg Business on News Radio 740, KTRH. Right now, it's 80 at your official, Severe Weather Station, News Radio 740KTRH. It's time now for the news. Here's Cliff Saunders. Good morning. It's 531, our top story. Once we expose him for who he really is, the radical leftist views that he has, I think there's no way that Texas can elect him. Ken Paxton on Newsmax talking about James Talarico, who's flip-flopping in extreme views, just got exposed again.
Senate candidate is telling voters he does not support transgender surgery for kids, even though he opposed a ban in the state legislature. Texas GOP strategist James Dickey says we can expect to keep seeing this flip-flopping. He famously said there were six genders. Between now and November, he's going to have six positions on everything. The issue of transgender health care is once again in the spotlight. After earlier this week, the feds announced that Medicaid and children's health insurance programs will no longer fund gender transition. and hormone treatments or surgeries for minors. KTRH is Rex. So it's meantime a New Emerson College poll in this race shows Ken Paxton ahead of James Talarico. We found out that the polls were wrong again. That was the reaction to recent primaries this week in Wisconsin, last week in Michigan, with Democrat socialists underperforming what the polls had predicted. Charlton State political science professor Bo Kabbalah says some pollsters are actually getting it wrong. purposely. We know how to misrepresent what a poll indicates. You just mess with the sample size. You adjust the sampling location. Many pollsters have an interest in shaping the outcome. And I think the primaries, if we can dig deeper, continue to make that point for us. He also points to the Trump effect where polls have repeatedly undermeasured Republican and conservative support for candidates. It's 533 breaking overnight. Kevin Wrightout, an American missionary abducted in Niger has been released after nine months in captivity. Still no movement in talks with the Iranians when it comes to the Strait of Hormuz. Vice President JD Vance says Tehran hasn't been straight with the Trump administration for months. The Iranians sometimes make commitments that they don't honor. They make a deal. They don't honor the deal. That was JD Vance on Fox. Oil at $81.80 a barrel this morning. Dow futures are down, 59 points. Cyber attacks on water systems across the country have been in the news for the last couple of weeks. And national security experts say we need to be concerned about the power grid. Wade Miller is a former Marine and now executive director for the Center for Renewing America and says the threat is real. It's very real. As a Marine, I always like to flip the map and say, if I were to attack myself, what would I attack first? Where am I most vulnerable? And that would be our U.S. energy. Literally small teams of infiltrators could shut down the U.S. economy for weeks, if not months, to the degree where gas isn't flowing, electricity isn't moving to houses, food isn't showing up grocery stores. It's a priority for our U.S. adversaries. Jeff Andy Biggs News Radio 740, KT. Reach. 534, Houston ISD high school teacher went viral this week for calling out his students' inability to read something that could be the result of years of woke indoctrination in our public school system. The government school systems focus more on the LGBTs than the ABCs. If you're not knocking it out of the park in the core academic subjects, then you have no business branching off into the political sphere. Corey DeAngelis with the Heritage Foundation says the solution to this is more accountability and to move away from educational participation trophies. Meantime, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles reacted to Darius Williams' viral posts.
At one point, he asked reporters if that was, quote, new information. Four years ago, Wheatley was an F. There were many more students who could not read at grade level. or do math at great level. That is why we're here. That's why this is serious. And that's the Mike Miles trying to deflect irony, though, Wheatley, where Darius Williams teaches just got an A in the accountability ratings. Hate to see the schools that got a D or an F. Fort Bend County Commissioners moved ahead yesterday with a proposed property tax rate, but the meeting again took place without Democrat commissioners, Dexter McCoy and Grady Prestage. A long time since that was my favorite sandwich. Long, long time. But when you're a kid, you know, favorite kid's sandwich probably. He's peanut butter and jelly where some form there up. Maybe a grilled cheese comes in close. But as far as adults, as far as the country is concerned, what are the favorite sandwiches? What is the best Texas sandwich? Other than a brisket sandwich, if you had to pick something, anything other than a brisket sandwich, what would it be? Because I think everybody would say brisket. Hellman's mayonnaise, the mayonnaise people, have crowned their version of America's favorite sandwich. They did a nationwide bracket, kind of like NCAA style, representing all 50 states. More than 10,000 sandwich fans participated, casting nearly 100,000 votes through the competition. The bracket turned regional favorites into a national food showdown with fans picking their favorites. The competition ultimately came down to the elite eight, including Nevada's patty melt, Texas's chopped brisket sandwich, New Jersey's Italian sub, Illinois' Italian beef, Alabama's pulled chicken with white sauce, and California's tuna salad. Okay. They ended up getting down to a final four and then the two that made the finals that weren't mentioned there in the elite eight because that gave you six. Were the Kansas entry featuring burnt ends, which is a barbecue staple particularly associated with Kansas City. We've got a fair share of burnt ants here. Pennsylvania represented by the iconic cheese steak. And the ultimate winner was the cheese steak one. How come the BLT didn't make the great eight, or the elite eight? I love me a great BLT. So anyway, I thought, you know, it was Friday. We like to do fun questions on Friday. giving your favorite your favorite sandwich and in bonus points if it is something that's kind of unique to texas other than obviously we mentioned the brisket sandwich but anything else that you want to do i'll nominate the BLT because i love a good BLT if it's made with really good fresh tomatoes and sourdough sourdough lightly toasted bread yeah that's good stuff you know the i heart radio app kTRH Hit that talkback button. First name, where are you calling from your nominations for favorite sandwich? It's 540. Time for traffic and weather together. We're checked out the drive again and we're making ourselves hungry, Skymike. Good old grill cheese. Just plain old grill cheese. You know, if you put like a little pickle here and there, it's the same effect as Chick-fil-A too. What about a little ham? You like a little ham on that grill cheese? Put a little pickle on there. Maybe some onions. Since I'm single, I can eat all the onions I want. All right, Eastex Freeway. Southbound at Townsend, Jimmy. We got this.
here vehicle fire. It's on the southbound, inbound side. One, two, three, right lanes. Left lane's getting by here. We're actually okay. I think it's kind of because it's Friday. Not everybody's coming in. About a seven-minute skunch, and there's not a lot for alternates here. 494 is not going to help you because it's right at the bridge here. So, I mean, if 45 or the Hardy Bond are options, do that instead, but if 69 is your usual course, go ahead and stick the course right there. We're, you know, it's better than trying to go all the way around Grand Parkway. 610 North, Westbound, at the squeeze, 45. It's just some breaks here. And, of course, that nasty roadwork downtown. Same old, same old. That's it. Now, I am looking at radar and down towards the Danbury area and kind of east of Lake Jackson. There's some pretty potent little cells of storms there, but everywhere... else. We're just going to be dealing with the heat and the humidity. It does look like we might need a change as far as maybe a heat advisory for the weekend as we're starting to see some of the higher heat index readings. Before today, mostly sunny. Well, we talked about yesterday. I'm going to play a clip for you coming up next. of that Wheatley high school teacher crying over the state of some of his seniors in his class that can't read and write. Now, he says they can't read and write. I don't know if he meant they can't read and write at all or they can't read and write at grade level, which is a whole different story. But he made it sound like they can't really read or write at all. And... The irony is that the Texas Education Agency gave them an A. Wheely High School got an A. That's the highest grade you can get. And yet they have students there that can't read and write. That seems like a problem. Anyway, more on that story coming up next at 5.50 right now. Let's take a look at your drive again with Skymike. All right, downtown I-10 Westbound. There's some dumb kids in front of you. And the roadwork, this is right at 45. You got two little skinny lanes. All right, class, we're going to start with a refreshment of yesterday's lesson. Yesterday's lesson was that we have some seniors, 17, 18-year-old seniors at Wheatley High School who evidently can't read or write, at least according to this viral video from one of their teachers. This is only day soon. And I have seniors who simply cannot. Read and seniors who cannot write. They cannot write. They can reason. They have the ability to defend their reasoning if it's talking to their homeboy, but applying that to a written text, two paragraphs, and they couldn't do it. Now we reached out to Houston ISD about the post. The district sent us a statement saying in part, the first days of the school year are an important time for teachers to get to know their students, academic abilities, assess their individual needs, and determine the support each student may require. The district also said at Wheatley High School, there are students who need additional academic support, and we will continue working with our teachers and school leaders to ensure those students receive it. That reports from Fox 26, by the way. Yeah, the very carefully crafted statement from H-I-S-D about it. Mike Miles, the superintendent, also tackled the topic. We'll hear from him a little bit later in the show. You already heard from him during Cliff's Newscast, but you haven't heard this report. This report's from K-H-O-U-11. They went out and they interviewed. They didn't ask about...
this teacher or those students. They may have done the interview before that story came out. I'm not sure. Or they may have been told, just don't ask us about that, about the teacher, okay? But they interviewed the principal and the assistant principal. Once it was learned, ironically, that Wheatley High School got an A, that's right, an A from TEA. Principal Blanchard. Yes, sir. How would you characterize this news? So this is some of the most exciting news that I've heard before, simply because I was at Patrick Henry during the original thought about the takeover. It was one of those schools that we were calling the Trigger School. So to find out that Wheatley High School is now an A, that is so exciting for me as the principal of Wheatley High School. How did Wheatley go from consecutive failed ratings to an A rating? So for us, we kept the main thing, the main thing. We focused on what we knew we needed to get the students to where they should be. What categories has the school improved in? I would say all around, as she stated, it's a full circle moment for us, but preferably just putting a high quality teacher in front of every student consistently. Was there a lot of teacher turnover? Absolutely, but we were able to bring in better teachers. So we knew what our kids need, so we knew what we're looking for at our hiring events. Your thoughts about this evolution of Wheatley from failure to success? My thoughts are it's time. The kids deserve it. The kids earned it. Your night in just got legendary. And by the way, this is not the downplay that they have made massive improvements at Wheatley High School. And many other schools in HISD, the star testing results show that. But they also show that I think we're grading on a curve. To put it in teacher lingo, I think we're grading on a bell curve. And maybe the improvements we're seeing at HISD are as much about... President Trump signed two new executive orders last week on birth tourism, but it turns out Texas has been hard at work for at least a month on this issue. Texas has to be the anchor pen that helps save this country because it's not going to be California, New York. It's either going to be Texas and Florida, and we're going to do things the American way, or it's going to be blue state, socialism, communism. That's William Gein with Allie Pack. Last month, Governor Greg Abbott signed in order to try and put an end to the birth tourism scheme in the Lone Star State. Local leftists are freaking out after records show that there were 34 HPD calls between April and June that led to cooperation with ice. The group's Jennifer Wahhab says the average price of a Texas home purchased by an international buyer was $607,000. That's about $200K above average. Nationally, more than temocrat, more than 20 Democrat-led states have sued the Department of Transportation and Homeland Security over the White House's request for a national CDL database. and part of their joint effort to remove illegal alien truck drivers from our roads. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy on Fox, 604, an attempt to limit how HPD forces marijuana violations will be on the ballot in November, requiring HPD to make enforcing pop laws their lowest possible priority. It's incrementalism. They do this now. They'll do something a little bit later, and a little bit later, and pretty soon you find out the police are totally handcuffed and crime is abundant. I'm not in favor of that at all. I like a safe civil society. Former city councilman Greg Travis says that marijuana enforcement plays a key role in shutting down larger crimes. And then they did it like NCAA style.
and had people go online and vote for their favorite sandwich. And the winner was the cheese steak, the Philly Cheesesteak, which is not bad choice. I mean, if you've ever had a real Philly cheese steak, that's a great sandwich. But there's a lot of great sandwiches. I mentioned the BLT. I want to know what you think. What do you think America's, or your favorite sandwiches? You go to the I-H-R-R-H-F-R-H, first name, where are you calling from, and favorite sandwiches? Hey, guys, Rick from the East Side, happy Friday. My favorite sandwich is a toasted breakfast sandwich with Jimmy Dean's sausage and a nice runny fried egg and, of course, a slice of a bit of American cheese. Hey, Jimmy, this is Andrew Taney. I'm a semi-truck. I like a meatloaf sandwich a day after we make it. Put a little smear of mayonnaise on some bread and a big loaf sandwich. Hey Jimmy, my wife and I visited the Magnolia Salos in Waco last summer, and one of the restaurants in the silos had what they called the Lone Star. which is a grilled cheese sandwich, but loaded with barbecue brisket. One of the best things on the planet right there. I grew up with this toasted bread. Get you a little couple of slices, baloney, fry them in a skillet. Put it on that toasted bread with some mustard. It's addicting. I'll bet it is. By the way, I like that first one. We can include breakfast sandwiches, if that's one of your favorite sandwiches. I'm in the generator supercenter.com traffic center. From RKTRH, top tax defenders 24-hour weather center, Jeffineau's here. He's got the forecast. First, though, talk a little bit about the tropics. I know we have two systems out there that could come into play, I guess.
Later in the weekend, at least in the Caribbean, but do you see anything headed towards the Gulf? Right now it does look like, again, they're so far out, but the one system has a better opportunity as far as given the tropical formation through the next seven days, about 50%. And that one looks to be headed towards the eastern part of, if I had to guess, between Cuba and also into areas right along that straight into South Florida. So that one could possibly enter. The other one's a little farther. south, but it's given less of an opportunity, and they're both kind of right on top of each other. About a 30% chance for the other one that's, again, a little bit farther south. So I got a feeling these things may end up merging, and then from there have to start looking at some of the spaghetti models and such. But there is always that potential that we could see something into the Gulf here as we move through the next few days. So far, very quiet in the Gulf, mostly sunny today, quiet for us. Stray shower thunderstorm could pop up. We've seen a few of these, very isolated on radar, up to around 95, heat index around 107, partly cloudy tonight and 80. Tomorrow's sunny, 98, heat index around 110, and then upper 90s again Sunday. Temperature right now, still 80 at your official, severe weather station, news radio 740 KTRH. I live in Pasadena. So why does there need to be a vote to the people on no-knock warrants? Greg Travis joins us, former city council member. The Houston Police Department doesn't do no-knock warrants anymore, does it? Well, the answer is they can, but they don't. Yeah. You're exactly right. It's very, very rare for a no-knock warrant, but it's a useful tool if need be. So it needs to be around in those certain situations, but it's very, very rare. Now, we haven't talked about the term for a while. Could you define for our listeners, Greg, if you would, what a no-knock warrant is? What does that mean? What allows you to actually enter the premise without actually announcing yourself. It's used for people who have heroin or cocaine that are flushing it down the toilet and large copious amounts. So, you know, it's in those situations where the evidence will be destroyed almost instantaneously if you don't do a no-lock warrant. Okay. And that's really it. I mean, most, I mean, they're always going to do the warrant if they can. Everybody wants it to be above board and legal. So it's not like this is something that happens all the time. It did happen with Gerald Goines back in 2019. It was very unfortunate. Two people lost their life and a dog died too. And he's spending 60 years in jail for that, as he should. So, you know, that's, I'll tell you what this is all is. It's an attempt to drive people to the polls in November. That's what this is. To put on the ballot to make sure people go to the people they want to go to the polls to rile them up to get them to turn out because they're afraid of turnout. Same thing goes with the marijuana policy. You know, they're talking about making it the lowest priority. Well, guess what? It is the lowest priority. Small amounts of marijuana, nobody really cares about. Police do not care about. But it's a useful tool again. If they need to use that to go on to a higher level crime, it's like the broken windows policy. So it's useful. Again, it's low priority for the police, and nobody's sitting there making a big deal about it except for this group called Ground Games in Texas, which is another DSA front. And they're trying to rile people up and turn them out to the polls. to both the way they want. And that's it. And I guess you have to give them credit. They're pretty good at doing it, aren't they? They are, and they're well-financed. So, yeah, they're very good at doing this stuff.
But it's not in the best interest of Houston. It's not in the best interest of Houston citizens. It's actually a distraction, but it's even worse than that. It actually is trying to handcuff the police. It's not defunding the police, but it's handcuffing the police. Okay. At the end of the day here, when you take a look at these types of policies, when cities like the city of Houston put these things up for the voters, and then the voters say a certain thing, and then they end up changing the policy or changing the law for the city. Whose law supersedes who? Because we know what state law says about marijuana. Don't we have to follow whatever the state law says? Well, the answer is yes. I would think that would be the case. The state law prevails. But again, they're not telling you that. L-B-T-E-N-V-T. Your night in just got legendary. What they're just saying is you've got to put it at the lowest priority. And again, it's already done that. But sometimes a policeman has to put the marijuana at a higher priority. And that's because of what they're attempting to do in that situation, which is to control crime. So it really takes a lot away from the discretion of the police officer who's on the scene at the time looking at the totality of the situation. It's not good for, it's not good for crime reduction. And I think that's really what the purpose of this is, is to handcuff the police. So they really don't care what the state law is. Their attitudes, they know that it's illegal. They don't care. They just want to make sure the police are handcuffed. It's almost like defunding the police in essence. You know, that being the case in all you're saying about this, Greg Travis, I'm surprised they haven't put some sort of a nice measure on the ballot because the Houston Police Department does cooperate with ICE. I'm surprised they haven't put an anti-cooperation. ballot on there to get people, what they're trying to do is to drive people to the polls.
Just wait. They'll be doing that. Okay. They're reading, they have their own internal polling. They're reading polls. They know which way the people are swinging right now. And that's just one step too far right now. They've got to do more to degrade ice in the minds of the citizens and the people. And when the time is right, they'll do it. Okay. I mean, again, they're single-minded on this. They're just, they're out there for anarchy. They're trying to destroy the country, the values. And this is just one part of it. It's in criminalism. They just, they don't do it all at once. They do it bit by bit, by bit, slow creep, and you turn around and you realize this isn't the city or the state or the country that you recognize. This isn't your city, country, or state anymore. It's just not. And, you know, these people are evil as far as I'm concerned. They're evil because of what they're doing. And really who it hurts is, these are all rich kids, too. So who it hurts is the middle class and the poor. And they don't care about that. All they care about is power. That's it. All right, Greg Travis. Always good to hear from you, sir. Thank you. Former City Council member Greg Travis is 627 and time to take a look at your money. This is how HISD is responding to that. Yes, we're doing great. I hope we celebrate that. In fact, we're going to go to Wheatley tomorrow and celebrate the fact that they have an A. Yeah, that's Superintendent Mike Miles, and yes, that's the same school where the 17 and 18-year-old kids can't read or write, and the state just gave them an A rating, which leads to a lot of other questions. This is now being pointed to as an example of a participation trophy mentality in education. Only half the kids are proficient in reading, and only a third of them are proficient in math. Yet they have graduation rates much higher than 50%. Corey DeAngelis with the Heritage Foundation says the good news is we know how to fix this problem. Democrat socialist candidates in Michigan and Wisconsin did far worse in the actual election than their poll numbers indicated, signaling another setback for the polling industry. Tarleton State political science professor Bo Cabala says many polls don't measure who is actually voting. It's likely voters who matter, not registered voters, not all adults. It's likely voters. And a lot of people won't even tell a pollster what they really think. We saw this in 16 and 24. It's the Trump effect. So take those polls with a grain of salt. This is Houston's morning news with Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett. He sounds very passionate about ham sandwiches. 637 is our time here on Houston's morning news. Now grilled cheese and ham sandwich. Yeah, I'm all about that, especially with a bowl of like tomato soup. That's a good soup and sandwich combo right there. See, to me, sandwich is a lunch versus a dinner. I have to admit, I have a lot of rules when it comes to food. And that's one of the rules. I wouldn't eat just soup for dinner, and I wouldn't eat just a sandwich for dinner, but you put soup and a sandwich together, and it qualifies as dinner, at least with my mind and my rules. But we're talking about sandwiches here, because Hellman's, the mayonnaise, people, had an NCAA-style bracket competition. Every state had a sandwich. The sandwich they judged for Texas was a brisket sandwich, of course. And although we made the elite eight, we did make the final four, and we didn't win. The winner was the Philly Cheese Steak is the best sandwich in America. Well, you have your own personal favorite, whatever that favorite is. And some of you have come up with some interesting combinations. Meatloaf sandwich, for example. I've had a meatloaf sandwich before. I've made a sandwich out of leftover meatloaf. You've got people like Abdul El-Sayed, this Democrat socialist candidate for the United States Senate in Michigan. He's big time in favor of it. Okay, we'll play along here for a minute or two. How much would that cost? Is that the least bit feasible? Here's a Fox business contributor, Lou Besanese. with the cost of doing Medicare for all, at least some of the cost. I believe that Medicare for all should cover all health care. So that includes reproductive rights, right? That includes gender affirming care. There you go. So everything's going to be covered. But what's the price tag? And what about these promises? Is it even possible? El Sayyid said taxpayers will have to foot the bill for universal health care.
So imagine instead of paying that to your health insurance company, whose CEO makes $20 million a year. Instead, you paid a little bit more in taxes for health care that you wouldn't lose if you lost your job or turned 26 or got married or got divorced. So there's an opportunity here, I think, to trade what we give to a big corporation who gets to decide who we get to see and who we don't for a little bit more paid into FICA. And I think that's a trade that's worth making. But is it a program worth doing? Here to break down, the numbers is Fox Business's own contributor. to Bassanese. Great to see you. Great to be here. So we keep here, Medicare for all, Medicare for all, and no one questions it. Let's start questioning it. How much is going to cost? It's going to cost upwards of $70 trillion over 10 years. On the high end, on the low end, you're talking about $30 trillion. So this is money that doesn't exist. He talks about a little bit more tax, and that's the tease of Democratic socialism. We're going to give you away things, but it's a gotcha. The money's not there. You can't, even if you taxed every man, woman, and child in America, you still don't have the money. So you even said, for example, the richest people, the Forbes 400. Yes. So they're the problem. The rich are the horrible people. Terrible people. What should they do? So if they take the taxes from, or if not even, confiscate all the wealth from the Forbes 400, that's $6.6 trillion. That maybe funds this for one year. Now if you go, all right, that's gone, that pot's gone. We've confiscated. They're broke. We're going to corporate America. That's $30 trillion, roughly. We take that. But here's the key. If you take it, you can't take it again if you confiscate all the wealth. And that's the math that just never math. And by the way, the seniors, I'm with Medicare right now, they don't want everyone on Medicare. They get pushed to the back of the line. It's estimated they're going to lose 2 million jobs. Where are those jobs lost? They're lost everywhere throughout the economy, right? I mean, you're going to think it's going to impact low income Americans first. Right. Because those are the low hanging fruit, unfortunately. So the promises we're going to give you all and is actually going to take away from you. So we get supplements. Most people, if they're in a private company like this one, you'll have money come out of your paycheck. Well, not anymore, not with Medicare, but you say it's going to be p. June 15 and 21,000 per taxpayer per year. And here's the thing, it's going to come out of your paycheck. Like you can't, you can't prevent that from happening. You saw it with the Democratic Socialist co-chair. She went from the target being on billionaires to millionaires. And they always tell you someone else is going to pay for it. But then that someone else ends up being you and me and everyone else. Yeah, ultimately. Ultimately, ultimately we all pay. And you're hearing the numbers, the trillions of dollars that would cost to do it. And would the health, here's the thing, would the health care system be better if it was run by the government? No, clearly not. All right, time for the timeline. We have a pair of tickets for Santana and the Doobie Brothers. It's going to be August 21st, Woodlands Pavilion. This would require marijuana enforcement to be the lowest priority for HPD. Most cops don't prioritize marijuana, especially if it's just usage size. But sometimes it's helpful to be able to have that on hand to be able to detain someone or even arrest them if there's a bigger crime and process. Former city councilman Greg Travis says this is all part of an effort to take tools away from HPD. On the national front, the president is not ruling out a potential emergency election declaration ahead of November. The SAVE Act remains in limbo, so something needs to be done for election security. We got on the topic of sandwiches. It's Friday, you know. We like doing the fun stuff on the Friday. And what got my attention was this poll that was done by Hellman's mayonnaise on their website where they got a nominee for every state for a sandwich. The Texas nominee was a brisket sandwich. What else? I mean, not that that's the only guy's sandwich you can get in Texas, but it's certainly one of our best in uniquely Texas. But before you throw it in the skillet to grill it, you got to sprinkle braided parmesan on the buttered side of the bread. Oh. That brings another layer of flavor and French, man. Hold on. You said you have rules for food? I do. I'm more interested in these rules. I just eat what I eat whenever I eat. I don't do. Okay, you want some more rules? Okay. I mentioned earlier that I don't consider a sandwich by itself to be dinner. I consider it lunch. Now, if you partner it with a bowl of soup, then I can turn it into dinner. Because dinner for me requires more than one course. I know. It's great. I was going to say, I don't make the rules, but actually I did in this case make the rules. I also, although I sometimes break the rule, I rarely have breakfast for dinner. I know some people love breakfast for dinner. To me, breakfast is breakfast. I don't eat breakfast after 10 in the morning. If it's after, maybe I might stretch it to 10.30. But if it gets to 11, now it's lunch. Those are a couple of my rules. 7.10, time for traffic and weather together. You won't eat breakfast for dinner? Rarely. Huh? Rarely. You would need like waffles at night or pancakes and sausage? Yeah, what are you going to do when the grid goes down? What is the government going to do to try to prevent that from happening? We know that we have bad actors out there who are trying to hack into our water supply or electric grids. And you've got to think it's probably just a matter of time before they figure out how to do it unless, of course, there's ways that we can harden all this stuff up in order to prevent it from happening. A lieutenant colonel Robert McGinnis retired joins us here this morning. Welcome to the program, Colonel. Do you have some ideas here? What are some of the things that we aren't doing and should be doing in order to harden up our grids? L-D-E-H. Your night in just got legendary. Well, Jimmy, there's something called programmable logic controllers that are basically industrial computers that tell our physical equipment, our water system, our electric grids, what to do. And if they are accessible through the Internet, then that means that a hacker that is smart... that knows how to manipulate, you know, that software can therefore get in and move things around to disrupt our service. Now, you already mentioned what happened last month, the water tower situation in seven different states. We suspect it could be Iranian hackers. And, of course, we've seen this by the Russians against the Ukrainians, disrupting their utility systems, using, once again, hackers. But what has happened here, Jimmy, is that artificial intelligence has industrialized cyber attacks in a way that is hard to really react effectively and quick enough. So we have to use AI against AI to protect ourselves. But at the same time, we need to... really look at closing off access to these PLCs so that, you know, the outside world can't disrupt our critical services. And that seems like a no-brainer to me. I don't know why we ever made that stuff available on the Internet to begin with. What about where the components for the infrastructure are made, especially computer components? A lot of that stuff comes from places like China, doesn't it? Well, yeah. And there's...
Unfortunately, at this point, the idea of kill switches in American inverters, that's something that the Department of Energy just hasn't validated. We don't know that there's a secret code in there that is going to be able to be triggered by somebody in downtown Beijing and say, I want to cut off the lights there in Houston. theoretical but it's not proven as yet so you know we need to be smart about this and I think taking it away from accessible internet connections that can be hacked from the other side of the world is something smart but it's expensive and so the infrastructure people are going to say okay this is going to cost many billions and billions of more dollars but if you don't do it then it does become part of the battlefield of the future. And we already have seen evidence of that. You take out the electric grid and you're talking chaos here, aren't you? Oh, you certainly are. I wrote about this in preparing for World War III because we become very quickly a primitive culture if you don't have electricity. You don't have hospitals. You don't have, you know, refrigerators, you don't have food, you don't have power of any type. And so this really... forces us back into a very primitive situation. After all, you know, look at what President Trump has talked about knocking out the electric grid in Iran because he wants to really send a very strong message. Well, that does. And, of course, the modern life is dependent upon these resources. Yeah. How concerned are you, one more thing on the electric grid here. How concerned are you, Colonel, about an electromagnetic attack from one of our enemies taking out the grid across the entire country? Yeah, a burst of nuclear weapon, 100 miles above the surface, could certainly black out any grid capabilities. The same thing could, of course, happen from a solar storm, which we've had in the past. That's something that the North Koreans, we believe, have a capability of doing. Certainly the Chinese and the Russians could if they wanted to, and others. So it's a possibility, something we have to plan for, but something that's very, very hard to harden the facilities underneath that, even in the battlefield, you know, because we, you know, just don't have the mechanisms at this point to do that. Nice, sir. Thanks, as always. Good to hear from you. Appreciate it. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert McGinnis joining us here on Houston's Morning News. It's time now. Take a look at your money. What happens? The things are happening. Stop right here. On News Radio 740, KTRH. All right, well, let's start again, if you missed it, the story that went viral about this Wheatley High School teacher with 17, 18-year-old seniors in his class. They can't read or write. Here's what he said online. This is only Dave Sue. And I have seniors who simply cannot read and seniors who cannot write. They cannot write. They can reason. They have the ability to defend their reasoning if it's talking to their homeboy, but applying that to a written text, two paragraphs. And they couldn't do it. Couldn't do it. They couldn't do it. Okay. So, Superintendent Mike Miles got asked about it. Here is his answer. So, look, is that new information? I don't think that's new information. The sentiment, I think, we all share. for four years, or three years. The sentiment that there are kids who need, students who need, support. Four years ago, Wheatley was an F that were, there were many more students who could not read at grade level or do math at grade level. That is why we're here. That's why this is serious. That's why we're doing something about the fact that the students can't read at grade level. Yes, we're doing great. I hope we celebrate that. In fact, we're going to go to Wheatley tomorrow and celebrate the fact that they have an A. Because the A and these numbers don't really mean that much unless you think about the kids behind it. When you go from 38
percentage points are 34 to 58 in algebra 1. That's hundreds of thousands of students who can now do math at grade level in either eighth or ninth grade. That's setting them up for success. Still, when you're at a 58, that means that there's 42% that's not a grade level. So yes, it's not a, it's not news that kids struggle. And that's why it's so important doing what we're doing. That's why we raise expectations. Where was the outrage, if there's outrage over that video or posts, if there's outrage, where was that in 2023? I hope there was. That's why we're doing the rigor as rigorously, the work as rigorously as we can. That's why there's an urgency. People say we're moving too fast. People can't catch up. People say that, you know, the expectations are too hard. You know, we have a sense of time. We're pushing kids too hard. All those comments. And I say, yes, we are using time. Well, yes, we are raising expectations. And guess what? The kids have risen to the level of expectation. So that we don't have as many situations as that. But you can go into any high school today, or almost any high school, some you can't. and you will have kids who cannot read at grade level. That's why the work has to continue, and that's why we need to be urgent, and we need to be serious about this. All right, that's H-I-S-D Superintendent of Mike Miles. That's his answer. But he said at grade level as far as reading, the teacher said couldn't read or write which one is it, I wonder. You all have a great weekend. See you Monday morning, bright and early at 5.
