Plenty of sunshine today, eventually giving way to some afternoon clouds and some more thunderstorms in the forecast. High temperature today should be warming up to the low 80s. Overnight low in the upper 50s, back into the low 80s tomorrow and more rain in the forecast for the weekend. Partly cloudy skies right now at 62 in Denver.

The rain, but the hail that comes with it? Maybe not so much. Our biggest harroport just to the south of Buckley Space Force Base to the northeast of Centennial, and we got 1.75 inch hail. Essentially golf balls falling from the sky. National Weather Service meteorologist Abby Pettettett says some areas in the metro saw more than an inch of rain. The airport's reporting very little, though. We got a whopping 0.05 inches. That's not even a tenth of an inch. But it was enough to delay more than 850 flights coming in and out of DIA yesterday. 70 flights were canceled. We could see a lot more today when more storms are moving in this afternoon. So far, DIA is reporting 50 delays 20 canceled flights. It wasn't the rain or hail that forced a united flight full passengers to return to the terminal. Bad news is we found a live around the bullet on the airplane. Yeah, a flight attendant found a bullet on the plane while it was taxing to the runway. Everyone was instructed to grab their carry-on luggage and returned to a secluded security screening area. The plane left a few hours later after getting the all clear. A security threat at Pikes Peak State College in Colorado Springs, forcing the campus to lock out all students today. All doors locked and only faculty and staff will be allowed in. We'll have additional officers on campus as well. Now, school leaders are providing little details about the threat, but they say they hope to open the doors again tomorrow. Leaders at Adams 12 five-star schools considering closing seven schools next year. District staff will present a consolidation plan to the school board next month and recommend which schools they need to close. These closures would not take effect until next year. This comes as school districts across the country deal with declining enrollment, mostly due to lower birth rates and the higher housing costs. Brenda Stewart, K-O-A. More than 7,000 first-year students will begin their college journey at CU Boulder next week. One of them will be doing it with a full ride after winning the Betcher Scholarship. Denver Academy graduate Ian Johnson says winning the award has changed his approach to college. I just feel like the men's gratitude, and I really just want to give back in any way I can. And so I think, you know, when I get up to college, that's going to be a... A much bigger focus than it would have been otherwise. Johnson says he wants to double major in physics and philosophy. An escort service could be coming to Denver. A license application has been filed for a company called Pure Intentions. Community leader Mariah Rodriguez says people in our neighborhood will do our best to keep the company out. We want family businesses along federal corridor and we don't feel like this aligns with what Westwood is. Colorado law defines an escort as an employee who provides companionship for a fee. The city insists it's not a prostitution business. A father and two children hospitalized this morning after they were hit by a pickup truck in a crosswalk in Loveland. Loveland police say it happened just after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Knob Cone Drive and Highway 287. The father and his two children were legally crossing in a designated crosswalk when they were hit. All three were taken to the hospital with two...

Again. Whole Foods is recalling dozens of items containing jalapinos in 12 states, and though no cases of salmonella linked to the jalapinos have been reported in Iowa. The company is recalling sauces, guacamole, dips, and condiments containing jalapinos sold at West Des Moines store. No illnesses have been reported in connection to the Whole Foods products. It affects stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Indiana. Kentucky and Ohio. The recall comes just days after Taylor Farms announced it would be voluntarily recalling its products that include jalapinos, which were sold at Target, Kroger, Walmart, and Trader Joe's stores in 26 states. A full list of a recalled items is available on the FDA's website. The White House is accusing China of routing billions of dollars worth of goods through third countries as a way to avoid President Trump's tariffs in 2018, resulting in billions lost in U.S. revenue. And new report claims that more than 40 countries are involved in a shadow shipping network. The administration estimated the practice costs the U.S. between $19 and $26 billion in tax revenue each year. According to the report, exporters hid the true origin of goods by repackaging, relabeling, or performing minimal assembly in another country before shipping those products to the U.S. White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro said the scheme has long allowed China to launder its exports. The multi-agency crackdown led to the seizure of cocaine, 46 firearms, five pipe bombs, and over 35,000.

Overnight low in the upper 50s and similar pattern for the next couple of days into the weekend. Right now it is 63 degrees in Denver. Attention all passengers. Delays are possible due to weather conditions. Please remain near your date for further announcements and updates. That announcement repeated over and over again yesterday afternoon at DIA when an incoming storm delayed more than 800 flights and canceled 70 more. Surprisingly, the airport cut only a tenth of an inch of rain from that storm. Some areas were a little bit more lucky. The Albert Mountain got over an inch. Greeley got 1.22. Fort Morgan got almost an inch. The National Weather Services, Abby Pettit, says the bigger problem was the hail that pelted much of the metro area, some as large as golf balls. We're in for another round of storms this afternoon. Not enough rain to really get us out of our drought, though. We are 4.71 inches below normal. We would need almost 5 inches of rain. We could get close with more storms headed our way into the weekend. The situations much worse in Indiana were massive storms this week, washed out numerous homes and buildings. Out of control. It's devastating, but everyone's okay, and I have wonderful neighbors, and it's a great community, and we'll get through it. He had to be rescued from his home. After more than five feet of water surrounded his front door, Indiana's governor mobilizing the state's National Guard to help clean up the hardest hit areas in the cities of Gary, Munster, and Hobart. Even more rain is in the forecast today. Nearly 200,000 people across the state remain without power. Back to the airports where a United Flight leading from Denver to San Diego was delayed for several hours yesterday after crews found a bullet on board. They're ready to go and everything looks great and they're closing things up. And all of a sudden everything got really quiet and nobody was moving around. And they made a brief announcement. She says she had to grab her carry-ons, including her small dog and get off the plane to be rescreened. The TSA searched the plane and finally gave the all-clear, the crew and 178 passengers to take off several hours later. The State Health Department giving the ICE detention center in Aurora until Monday to hand over information about tuberculosis cases in the facility. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment say they average 77 cases each year in settings. They include schools, hospitals, workplaces, and even correctional facilities. And facilities routinely provide the information and access necessary so they know about potential exposure. That has not occurred in this instance. Although Geo provided general statements about its response, didn't give them the requested access or underlying information needed to complete a full public health investigation. Mia Bender, K-O-A. Community members fighting back about a plan to open an escort service in Denver. The proposed business called Pure Intentions would be located near Federal Boulevard. Denver's licensing, Eric Escadero, acknowledges the word escort might raise a few red flags. People hear escort service. They think of something else. They think of prostitution. There is no license.

for prostitution anywhere in the state or in the city and county of Denver. The city says operating an escort service is legal. The owners of pure intentions must go through the city's public needs and desires hearing as part of the licensing process. That hearing is set for August 31st at 1 p.m. More fallout from the racist incident at the city of Golden, the fire chief. has not been fired. Casey Beale was fired just 10 days after being placed on administrative leave. The incident involved a fire department employee hanging a snoop on a stoop doll, a doll made to resemble rapper Snoop Dog by its neck from a rope at the fire station. It happened in the spring. That employee was eventually fired, but employees in other city departments have expressed disappointment with how the city handled the incident. The firing comes just days after Golden City Manager was also fired. Carrie Mack, K-O-A. 17 people. jailed after authority seized 15 pounds of cocaine, weapons, and pipe bombs, and a major drug bust in Denver. The FBI Special Agent Amanda Colgeski says the suspects sold drugs in bulk throughout the metro area. In this particular case, Denver PD with the FBI and Aurora PD, they were integral in this particular investigation to get these particular violent criminals off the streets. She says the case is a significant step forward. dismantling a criminal network operating in the city. Colorado's latest lawsuit against the Trump administration involves commercial driver's licenses. Colorado joining about two dozen other states and suing over the administration's demands of a database of state-owned records. The administration threatens to cut federal funding to the National Association that manages the database if it's not turned over. Colorado's Phil Weiser and other attorneys general argue the federal government has no legitimate need to access state. records and the request is illegal. Brenda Stewart, K-O-A. Icon Pass owner Altera Mountain Company just laid off employees across Denver and its resorts, although the company didn't say exactly how many people lost their jobs. CEO Eric Resnick says slowed growth and unaligned cost structure are to blame for the layoffs. He says the poor snow and low visitor numbers from last season did not have an impact on the decision to cut some of those jobs. Senior management roles and long-tenured employees were laid off in the corporate restructuring process. And this all comes just around a month after the state's Office of Economic Development provided millions of dollars and incentives to keep Altera headquartered in Denver moving from Rhino to the downtown business district here in Denver. Instead of moving to Utah, Altera, and Vale, the owners of ICON and Epic Passes are facing similar issues after last year's low snow. Because they make the bulk of their money on season passes,

sales, people could be hesitant to spend $1,000 on a pass without the guarantee of sufficient snow this year. Whole Foods is recalling dozens of items containing jalapinos in the United States. The company in 12 states, rather, the company is recalling sauces, guacamolees, dips, and condiments containing jalapinos. No illnesses have been reported in connection to the Whole Foods products. It affects stores in places like Texas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Michigan, and other states, not Colorado. The recall comes. just days after Taylor Farms announced it would be voluntarily recalling its products that included jalapinos, which were sold at Target, Kroger, Walmart, and Trader Joe's in 26 states. A full list of recalled items is available on the FDA's website. A Lake County teacher is raising scholarship money for students through his participation in this weekend's Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Jeff Spencer will start at the back of the field with the goal of passing as many other riders as possible before the finish. Last year, he passed around 1,500 riders, earning more than $140,000 for the Lake County High School scholarship program. Spencer says every child who graduated last year received $2,000 to help with college or other career paths. You're up to date on the latest business of money news. Head coach Sean Peyton says Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger will each play a half tonight with Bo Nix sitting out. Stidham and Ellinger are competing to meet Nix's backup. It's a great room. Those guys get along well. It'll be good to get them some real game. experience and see how they're doing. The rest of the starters are expected to be in for about 15 snaps. One of those strengths is the team's offensive line and guard Quinn Miner says the continuity from last season will help. We already have a base foundation and fundamentals of how we want to do things. And now we're looking at efficiency. Now we're looking at, you know, not only like winning the block, but being dominant with that block. And it's important to not put too much weight on the result of tonight's game. Four of the 60 Super Bowl champions have finished with a winning record in preseason, so it's not overreaction territory. If things don't go well tonight, that data is a little skewed to the 1960s and 70s with just one of the first 15 Super Bowl champions finishing preseason without a winning record. Last season, Seahawks team was the first to win all of their preseason games since Russell Wilson led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl in 2014. Former LSU quarterback Jaden Daniels is demanding his alma mater, return to its copy of the Heisman trophy. He won back in 2023. Daniel's attorney sent the university a cease and desist order demanding it stop using his name, image, and likeness for promotional purposes because LSU is allowing sophomore defensive back DJ Pickett to wear his number five this season, which Daniels wore when he won the Heisman in 2023. Joe Burrow also won the Heisman while at LSU leading that 2019 team to one of the best seasons in college football history. And while his number hasn't been retired, no one has worn it since then. It appears Daniels wants that same respect as a Heisman winner. DJ Pickett says he does not plan on changing from number five. A possible plea deal this morning in the federal case against Luigi Mangione. He's accused of killing United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson. It won't spare him a life sentence, but it could spare him a second trial. If he was ever going to have an argument. about double jeopardy, this is the way to do it. Plead guilty in the federal case, make an argument in New York state where it's very protective against double jeopardy that he shouldn't be tried to get. ABC's Dan Abrams says prosecutors and defense attorneys aren't issuing any details about the deal just yet. And the future for flock cameras. We'll take a look coming up next. Gina Gondack on Colorado's morning news, Flock Safety, the company behind the controversial AI safety cameras, implementing new changes to its system amid growing concerns about its mass surveillance opportunities. Joining us on the K-Way Common Spirit Health hotline is IHartMedia National correspondent. It's Roy O'Neill. Rory, appreciate your time. As always, tell us a little bit more about some of these new mandatory safeguards that it looks like flock safety is just announced. Yeah, block safety has been really under a lot of pressure in recent weeks. I don't know if you've seen it in your social media feeds, but more and more people objecting to these cameras saying it's a surveillance state out there and it's being abused by police officers. So in response to some of these allegations, even a lot of reported vandalism of these flock cameras, flock safety says it's going to do a couple of things. One, it's going to put in new restrictions and essentially make it harder for police officers to abuse the data. There'll be more digital fingerprints left behind so they'll know exactly who's accessing some of this information. There have been allegations that police officers have been... tracking ex-girlfriends or estranged spouses, all that kind of stuff, using these surveillance cameras. So this hopes to crack down on that. Block safety also is saying it's going to reduce the amount of time. It stores a lot of this data from 30 days down to seven days. Yeah, even automatic audits and a number of other measures that they've mentioned so far. We've had a number of the stories in the Colorado area of cutting down flock cameras or the Denver City Council replacing the flock cameras with axon cameras, a new contract with them. Alida was the latest one that said it's canceling its contracts with flock safety. Rory, I'm not sure if you have any information when it comes to just the different companies. Like, are they all the same in some capacity? They just got different names? Because a lot of people were like, Like, okay, Denver, you just replaced one surveillance company with another surveillance company.

Yeah, you know, the contracts obviously are going to vary from company to company, and that's what your local jurisdiction is going to have to look at. But overall, I mean, just flock safety has contracts with 6,000 law enforcement agencies, 120,000 cameras nationwide in 49 states. And that's just from one company that you probably never heard of three months ago to have that level of surveillance. It said earlier, they're going to not store information for as long. Like, well, okay, but does anything ever really get deleted these days, right? Everything seems to linger out there. And where is that information going is another real big concern? And there was, look, I understand there's the argument of, well, if you're doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about, right? That's something we hear a lot of. But this was the case that popped up in North Florida where there's a flat camera outside recreational area, a big... County Park, but part of the recreational area includes a shooting range, a gun range. So now you have flat cameras recording the car, the license plate, the number of people in it, who's in it, going to gun ranges and maybe seeing what guns they have, how many weapons do they have? And think of that kind of data being collected in what many states now become a surveillance state. Yeah, that's a very interesting case there. And you're right. I mean, you can still dig up old MySpace photos, let alone keep the information that flocked safety cameras. I explain those, Gina, don't bring them up. Rory, do we know if a lot of these safeguards go in effect immediately? Like, how do we know that they're being enforced? Well, right. So some of them are going to be rolled out through the end of the year. Some have to be, will be happening in a matter of weeks, getting some of these law enforcement agencies to sign on to make sure that all of their officers would have to comply to these registration regulations so that flock can more easily track who's accessing the data. But I think the overall message is going to have to be one of vigilance. This is not something that's ever going to be resolved once and for all. It's something where people are going to have to keep on pushing against these security operations saying, yes, I understand it's for public safety, but at the same time, there are privacy concerns out there as well. And it's always a moving target, and it's good and healthy to keep having the debate. A story not going away anytime soon. I heart media national correspondent. It's Rory O'Neill. Thanks, Rory.
