I also want to take a couple of minutes and talk about the Luigi Mangione case. Remember this guy, he was the guy that shot and killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Hard to believe this is coming up on two years ago. It was December 4th. of 2024. And he was in court yesterday on a pre-trial conference, and they're talking about the jury for this case. Not yet in trial, but let's go to Natalie Migliore. Boots on the ground are correspondent in Manhattan. Natalie, good morning. How are you? Good morning, Mike. Yeah, you are right. It is hard to believe that it's been almost two years with this Luigi Mangione case. I was one of the first reporters on the scene, actually, when this incident happened. So it is sort of surreal to see him walk into court. He's wearing a gray suit, a white-collared shirt yesterday, laceless shoes, of course. And we're really right around the corner from when this state trial... could start September 8th. That's what it's set for. And when it comes to jury selection, the judge sitting on this case says he wants the jury to remain anonymous, concerns with safety and tampering. In this very high-profile case, obviously, it spanned much of the country, and it exploded when it broke here in Midtown Manhattan. Now, the judge has ordered both sides to work together. and come up with a juror questionnaire, and then the judge will make the final decision on what questions make it on that form. And that's going to be an interesting selection process, too, because you're looking for people who can remain impartial on this jury, and that's really difficult because there are a lot of people, and this is where I start to scratch my head, Natalie. There are people that, you know, for whatever reason, support. uh Luigi Mangione in this and it just i can't wrap my brain around they just are disenfranchised with the health care system and and they look at him as some sort of vigilante justice kind of a guy um so and i see that uh his lawyers are targeting younger jurors because they think that the younger people will side with him no matter what Yeah, well, there's this interesting component there. You're absolutely right. He has so-called fans, right? And they stand outside the courtroom. They have signs. They support him. They wear costumes because Luigi and Mario Brother. I mean, this is really an interesting sight to behold. And so they even...
filled the courtroom about two dozen, maybe a little less, were in the courtroom yesterday to listen on. They wait on these lines to get into the courtroom. So not only his so-called fans, but this is going to be somewhat of a media circus as well. They are already planning to have dozens of media outlets approved. The trial will not be televised. That was decided yesterday. The judge does not want the trial to be televised, but there's going to be an... overfill room already, which we saw in several high-profile cases like P. Diddy. So this is definitely something, I will say, even if they're targeting younger people, I was out yesterday talking to just a few New Yorkers just sort of seeing where people are in this sort of Mangione thoughts and how they think about it. And one young lady was saying, you know, she needed to be reminded of the case. So it's interesting to see once you get them talking about the health care system and what he's accused of doing and shooting United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, then they sort of get into the health care aspect of things. But not everybody is such a passionate fan or such a passionate, not everybody's willing to condone the violence. that went into it. I'm happy to hear that because, you know, our health care system certainly isn't perfect and has its deep flaws, but, I mean, it's not this guy's fault. I mean, that's just saying he's a father, he's a husband, a son, a brother, whatever. And I see it, so Mangione is facing second-degree murder and weapons charges in this case. The death penalty has been taken off the table. Is that correct? Well, it... It was taken off the table, especially when it comes to the federal trial he's facing. Now, that's different, right? Because he's not even facing murder charges in the federal trial anymore. They were dismissed on legal grounds. He's actually facing interstate stalking charges. Ten hours on my feet.
