Today on the LA Report Morning Edition, LA Unified goes back to school and the district says schools near the burnout Boyle Heights warehouse are safe. State lawmakers are set to unveil a new bill in response to the lineage warehouse crisis in Boyle Heights. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. comes to town to take down L.A.'s homelessness efforts. I've seen the ineptness, the incompetence of government that has contributed to this problem. Good morning. It's Wednesday, August 12th. I'm Austin Cross, and this is the L.A. report from L.A.S. News. The district says schools near the Burnout Boyle Heights warehouse are safe. Mariana Dale reports. District officials conducted air, dust, and soil tests at some of the campuses near the disaster. The tests found ammonia, formaldehyde, and manganese at levels the district says are not concerning. Officials concluded schools are safe to reopen. However, the lead in the soil at two elementary schools exceeded the state's acceptable threshold. A district health and safety director told LAS the lawn at City Terrace Elementary and some trees at Dina Elementary will be fenced off until further testing or remediation. Mariana Dale, Elias News. Well, meanwhile, new state legislation is set to be unveiled today in response to the lineage warehouse crisis. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass has scheduled a news conference this morning along with Assembly member Mark Gonzalez and Senator Maria Elena Durazo. She says it will ensure that lineage can't rebuild without being accountable to the community. Lineage says 92% of the spoiled food has been removed from Boyle Heights, and they recently installed more than 1,100 fly traps. A pair of Trump cabinet secretaries were in L.A. yesterday to condemn the region's top homeless agency, vowing to withhold hundreds of millions in federal dollars. Scott Turner of Housing and Urban Development and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. of Health and Human Services say Lassa is corrupted by mismanagement and abuse. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said money should go to faith-based programs that focus on addiction, not the current housing first model. We can't address this Christ without confronting addiction and mental illness, and that's what this facility does. The feds recently blocked Lhasa from applying for about $240 million in funding. California's U.S. senators want the feds to crack down on sites that let users bet on wildfires. Last year, online prediction markets like Polly Market allowed people to place bets on things like, when will the palisades fire be contained, or how many acres would burn. Senators Schiff and Alex Padilla say $1.2 million in bets were placed on the fires. Santa Clara University's Anne Skeet says the potential for profit could affect the firefighters' actions or inspire an arsonist.

The very unfortunate idea that somebody might be financially motivated to start a fire. I think that really frightens people because they see the potential for bad actors. That audio from our media partners, CBSLA, Schiff and Alex Padilla are asking the Federal Commission in charge of these markets whether it plans to ban these types of bets. Finally, sports.
