Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Mike Johnston. Tropical storm Lala is moving away from Hawaii's Big Island after bringing torrential rain and damaging winds. Meteorologist Robert Ballard says the island's terrain made conditions even more dangerous. On top of the rain, you have areas where the wind has been accelerated down the mountain slopes and around the mountains. And so you've had hurricane force winds. that have been affecting parts of the Big Island as well. So I think we're going to have a pretty long recovery process for the Big Island, similar to what we saw in Hurricane Isle, which I believe is 2014. The storm passed south of the Big Island without making landfall, but flooding landslides and wind damage could leave parts of the island facing a lengthy cleanup. The Ukrainian armed services carried out drone strikes on the Moscow and Rostop regions of Russia. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense says a logistics center and the region's largest warehouse seized operations following the strikes. NPR's Hannah Palomarenko reports. The press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukraine has disabled seven of the ten largest Wildberries logistics centers in Russia. Since July 18, the Ukrainian armed forces have attacked a number of warehouses belonging to the Russian marketplace. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, these facilities supplied sanctioned components for the production of drones and navigation equipment. Meanwhile, overnight and morning Russian attacks on Ukraine damaged the power generation and blast furnace operations in the Dnipropetrovsk region, postal service warehouses and a hardware store in Odessa. Hannah Palomareenko, NPR News, Kiev. The Democratic Party has approved a new roadmap for choosing its next presidential nominee. NPR's Mara Liason reports the changes reshaped the opening stretch of the 28 primary and break with decades of tradition. For the 28 presidential elections, the Democrats' calendar will no longer begin with primaries or caucuses in Iowa and New Hampshire, two small rural white states. Instead, it will begin with South Carolina. and then Nevada. Democrats say because those states are more diverse, black and Hispanic voters will represent the Democratic Party more fully and help the party nominate candidates more able to win a general election. After South Carolina and Nevada, the Democrats have slotted New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan, and then Virginia. After those states vote, each on their own day in January and February, multiple states will vote on Super Tuesday in March. Mara Liason, NPR News.
