Live from News 887 in Houston, I'm Shelby Rose. Houston police say they put a stop to a man shooting at random vehicles with an automatic rifle on the northeast side. HBD assistant chief Yarr Andy Beshear says officers were forced to open fire when the man refused commands to drop his weapon. Now prior to the officers arriving, The suspect shot at moving vehicles. He shot three vehicles, of which two of those vehicles, citizens were struck, and three citizens were struck by the suspect discharged weapon, and they are in stable condition, and they have received medical attention. A mother and daughter were among the victims shot by the suspect. Andy Beshear says multiple officers shot the gunman who was taken to the hospital for treatment. The historic 1877 Tallship, Alyssa, will return home to Galveston on Saturday after a month's long voyage across the country. News 887's Juliana Washburn has more. The Alyssa is expected to dock back at the Galveston Historic Seaport at around noon Saturday. The tall ship has been away from her home port for a few months now, representing Galveston as part of Sail 250. It was a global gathering of tall ships and military ships to celebrate the country's 250th anniversary. Anyone wanting to welcome back the Alyssa is encouraged to gather at Pier 21 in Galveston. State appointed superintendent Mike Miles addressed the concerning... video at Thursday's school board meeting. We've always had this. Four years ago, it was worse. There were more 11th graders and 12th graders who could not read at grade level and do math at grade level. So it's serious business. It requires urgency. HISD has received criticism over its reading curriculum specifically for prioritizing teaching and reading short excerpts.
