This is NPR. Live from News 887 in Houston, I'm Shelby Rose. Multiple people are in the hospital after Houston police say a man was firing an automatic rifle at innocent cars driving by in the northeast part of town on Wayside Drive. Multiple 911 calls came in around 11 a.m. HBD assistant chief Yarra Andy Beshear says in total three cars were struck. A mother and daughter shot in one in a third person in another vehicle before police got to the area. Upon arriving, officer located that individual. and began to give him verbal commands and also told him to drop the weapon. The officers engaged with the suspect and discharged the weapons multiple times. The suspect was struck more than once, and he was transported to local hospital where he is receiving medical attention. Three HPD officers and one DPS trooper fired at the suspect, were told all victims are in stable condition in receiving medical attention. Today marks 14 years since journalist and Marie Corps veteran Austin Tice disappeared from a checkpoint near Damascus while reporting on the Syrian Civil War. News 887s Andrew Snyder says his family in Houston is still holding out hope that he's alive and being held somewhere in the Middle East. Austin's sister Naomi Tice and his mother, Deborah Tice, both believed that the U.S. war with Iran has complicated efforts to locate Austin and secure his return. But Naomi says that direct U.S. talks with Iran have also opened up an opportunity. We have really good reason to believe that Austin was held in prisons that were operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. And so... Because of that, we think that Iran would probably know some about where he was, at least prior to 2024, but then there's a very large possibility that he was actually moved to Iran. Senator John Cornyn is calling for President Donald Trump's administration to redouble their efforts to bring Austin Tice home. I'm Andrew Schneider, News 887.
