6 segmentsLive from News 887 in Houston, I'm Shelby Rose. Houston police say they put a stop to a man shooting at random vehicles with an automatic rifle on the northeast side. HPD assistant chief, Yaira Andy Beshear, says officers were forced to open fire when the man refused commands to drop his weapon. Now prior to the officer's arrival, The suspect shot at moving vehicles. He shot three vehicles, of which two of those vehicles, citizens were struck, and three citizens were struck by the suspect discharged weapon, and they are in stable condition, and they have received medical attention. A mother and daughter were among the victims shot by the suspect. Andy Beshear says multiple officers shot the gunman who was taken to a hospital for treatment. The shooter's condition is unknown. Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Marath visited Woodland Acres School on the east side today to call attention to the performance improvements made across state elementary schools. This is based on the TEA accountability ratings that were published for each school in the state of Texas. Slow and steady improvements. This is a result of steady investments by the legislature in public education, but also just continuous improvement practices by local leaders. In all 585 campuses across Texas, improved to an A rating in 2026. SMP Global, one of the big three credit ratings agencies, has lowered its financial outlook on Houston's water utility from stable to negative. The move comes after Mayor John Whitmire's administration shifted revenue and expenses between the city's general fund and the utility to the tune of about $200 million a year. Jamie Blancet, Associate Director at SMP Global, says the lower outlook signals a potential credit downgrade. We don't have a clear plan of attack from the utility. on how they're going to absorb those additional costs. A credit downgrade would raise the cost of debt.
