Live from NHPR News, I'm Julia Barnett. The largest state employees union in New Hampshire has endorsed candidates running in both party primaries in the second congressional district. N. HPR's Josh Rogers reports. SEIU 1984 represents more than 10,000 workers, most of whom work for state government. Union President Rich Gullough says the decision to back Democrat Maggie Goodlander and Republican Victor Orlando is about making sure members know their pro-union candidates in both second district primaries this year. We know our members are going to vote. both primaries. So what our board has decided to do is just give those members options. Goodlander has prioritized labor issues during her first term in Congress, including backing law, to tighten timelines for first union contracts. She faces state representative Paige Bochman in the Democratic primary. Orlando, a first-time Republican candidate, is a former union member who credits organized labor for lifting wages, improving worker safety, and helping to defeat communism in Europe. New Hampshire advocates say the federal government's 21st century Road to Housing Act will give developers more flexibility and incentive to build affordable units in the state. Alyssa Margolin is with St. Anselm College's initiative for housing policy and practice. She says the legislation will modernize the country's housing regulations, much like updating a toolbox to reflect the times. It's like you used to have a drill that you had to plug in the wall, but now a lot of people use cordless drills. or perhaps you had to pour gasoline into your leaf blower, and now you have a battery you can do that with. The bill includes provisions to preserve rental assistance for rural housing programs, streamline environmental reviews for developers, and reduce costs for manufactured home construction.
