From the KBIA Newsroom in Columbia, I'm Trevor Grandin. As mid-Missouri college students go back to school this month, some will be heading to the runway. The Moberly Area Community College's new pilot training program will begin flying lessons at Columbia Regional Airport. Student pilots will use the same two runways the major airlines do when taking passengers to and from mid-Missouri. City of Columbia airport manager Mike Parks says the school's operations won't get in the way of commercial flights. This is a great compliment to what we're doing right now with commercial service. We've had United return to Colombia. We've had a Legion Airlines start here. We continue to set monthly records. This will not have any impact on commercial operations out here. Columbia Regional Airport Operations moved to a new and expanded terminal in October of 2022. The city of Columbia is leasing the former terminal to MACC, which has undergone a significant remodel and is now outfitted with classrooms in a flight simulator. And Missouri House Minority Leader Ashley Awny says National Democrats will focus investment into four Missouri Senate races and 12 statehouse races this year. There haven't been spotlights, you know, from the DLCC in Missouri in a while. We haven't gotten that national attention in a while. And we are finally in an election year where folks all across the country are recognizing that Missouri is in play. Senate District 34, which includes parts of St. Joseph and Springfield's District 30, or among those, coming open due to term limits. An annual billboard campaign calling on the Kansas City Chiefs to change their name and end a long-standing fan tradition expanded its reach this summer. KCUR's Salisa Colloccal has more. The Kansas City Indian Center puts up these billboards every year when football season starts in the fall, calling on the team to change its name and stop the so-called tomahawk chop, which is popular with fans in Arrowhead Stadium. It's a stereotypical Hollywood kind of chant. and it freezes us into kind of this primitive image. That's executive director, Galen Krauser, a citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. She told KCUR's up to date that this year, they put up more billboards to catch attention during the World Cup. Krauser also says the team's pending move to a new stadium in Kansas is one more reason to reevaluate its name and fan practices. I'm Salisa Kolokal. And the sea lion shows at the Missouri State Fair have been canceled after the vehicle carrying the animals crashed in Boone County this morning. KOMU8 reports a tractor trailer hauling three sea lions struck a concrete barrier around 3 a.m. today. Several people involved sustained injuries, but there were no fatalities. The crash occurred around mile marker 133 on westbound interstate 70 in Boone County. The three sea lions were taken to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center for evaluation.
