‘Electronic shackle’ placed on released Chinese asylum seeker

Lankster activists are supporting Wu Xiaoping and hoping to use his case to bring attention to cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. Wu was pulled over by Mount Holly Springs Police for a stop sign violation. The department has a 287G agreement with ICE that allows them to carry out immigration enforcement. They arrested Wu, then ICE put him in Mashanen Valley Detention Center. It is a single incident that's very striking because he's the civil rights activist. in a communist authoritarian country, which we used to prioritize for immigrants. That's Perry Hazeltine, an activist with Solidarity Lancaster, a group that's been organizing against 287G agreements. He says Wu's case has helped draw more attention to local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Wu was held for two weeks before his lawyers and pressure from an international array of advocates won his release. Now, ICE is requiring Wu to wear an ankle monitor while he waits for his asylum case to go before a judge.
