A 16-year-old boy is being sentenced to life in prison without parole in the 2024 fatal shooting at a Georgia high school. Barry Barrow County Chief Court Judge Nicholas Prim. will not return to life. The injured will not forget their wounds and a 16-year-old boy will live and die in prison. Colton Gray was charged as an adult. Two teachers and two students were killed in the 2024 shooting. Nine others were injured. A new study finds one in eight Iowans faces food insecurity and local food banks are struggling to keep up with the growing demand. We are seeing an increase in a number of folks who are visiting our partners and keeping up with the demand has become. more and more difficult for food banks to source food to fill that gap.

Tammy Nielsen, CEO of Food Bank of Iowa, more than 4002,000 Iowans are food insecure, rather. A power outage this afternoon in the Des Moines Metro impacted more than 3,500 mid-American energy customers and made some traffic signals inoperable for about an hour. A utility spokesperson tells WHO Radio the outage was caused by an equipment failure. Power has since been restored. The Antiquing TV show, American Pick. The bridge collapsed July 17th when a truck was taller than the clearance. The street was closed for several days. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says this afternoon another truck that was too tall hit the bridge. It did not collapse this time. The road was closed for a short time and has now reopened. And you may need a construction hat the next time you visit the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. The facility has just started renovating the lobby and constructing a new entrance. Still getting questions for you, by the way. Oh, yeah. So before we do anything else, let's ask the next one. Okay. Caller wanted to know, what role, if any, does booze play in neuropathy? Hmm. That is a really great question. Yeah, that could definitely be one of the causes of neuropathy is alcoholism. We've taken care of quite a few patients that have had alcohol-induced neuropathy, you know. But the biggest thing with neuropathy or biggest thing with alcohol is, it's a poison, you know, just really beat straightforward. You know, if you have pure alcohol, you can let it on fire and, you know, start some big fires. It's basically gasoline, right? And so it's going to cause, you know, lots of inflammation in your body. It's really going to be difficult for your body to heal and recover, you know, had a patient that I just had to have a straightforward conversation with. He was having, you know, multiple drinks every single day and he was frustrated that he wasn't get the results that he was having. And I was saying, you know, hey, it takes quite a few number of hours for your body to process, you know, that alcohol through your body and all those hours that it is doing that, you know, is having a very difficult time healing and recovering for so many people, you know, the only time their body gets to heal and recovery is when they're sleeping. And so if you, you know, drinking alcohol throughout the day on a consistent basis, you're really shortening your healing window down is very difficult. for your body to keep up. That's very interesting actually. So you're not talking about, you know, I may have a beer with a meal. I did that yesterday. I may have, if it's a really nice meal, I may have a glass of wine or two. That will be my limit. I don't ever have more than two with a meal. That's the limit of my alcohol intake. You're not threatening me right now. Well, you know, like anything, you know, in moderation, you know, right? Obviously and definitely, you know, if you want to be, you know,

100% yeah definitely that put in no poison in your body would be best eating no processed foods would be best eliminating sugar you know cutting back you know on dairy on processed foods on all right now he's going after my ice cream ice cream and red wine come on man yeah there you go that's well you know ice cream when they said ice cream and great wet wine it thought it made ice cream and a grape juice or what my mom she gave us that growing up she called it a purple cow so All right, well, there's your answer. Yes, it might play a role, is the simplistic answer to the question from The Caller. So that's good as well. We like dealing with all these questions. Let's talk about other things that are going on as well, because you guys deal with a lot of stuff. You know, I pointed out before, I am blessed with young genes. I really am. I mean, it has to come from my dad. My dad was 77. He was a young man, for real. Amazing. And then he had a stroke. Wow. Sorry to hear that. I literally clicked my fingers because when he woke up from that, he was an old man. And I mean that in the absolute literal sense. He was an angry old man. And it was from frustration, I'm sure it was. Of all the things that he could do that now he couldn't do. And he survived two years and he died. Wow. You know, that's what happened to him. But up until the moment of that stroke. for real a young man and i feel i have those genes because i truly here in my head i'm pointing at my head uh haven't really aged at all since my early 30s yeah you know simon you actually remind me of one of my favorite patients i've ever had his name's willie okay if willy's listening um we uh one of my favorite patients because when he came in the, you know, at the end of every shift, at the beginning of every shift, we do a team huddle, we do a team prayer, pray before the shift, and at the end of every shift we share, hey, what were your positives from the shift? And, you know, multiple people brought up Willie at the end of their first shift. And that wasn't a positive, unfortunately, with Willie. He was grumpy, he was just upset. He was just upset. He was just upset. He was just upset. He was just upset. And, you know, can accept him under care. He wasn't talking nicely to our team members, you know, and then he got started under care. He didn't think that we could help him, but he's like, yeah, I'm going to give it a shot, you know, kind of begrudgedly, you know, and got started, you know, and then after a few weeks, he started, you know, not being grumpy. Then a little few more weeks, he started smiling. And eventually, at the end of the night, he was everyone's positive. He was, you know, Willie, you know, turned into the everyone's favorite person. He started bringing us snacks. He started bringing the front desk candy. He started, you know, giving everybody hugs. And he was just the happy. guy and now if you met him you think he's the happiest you know ray of sunshine you'd ever ever ever met and so that's just one of my favorite stories because you're totally right you know great story about your dad simon you know who was this you know

fantastic genes always in a great mood you know and then all of a sudden health issue you know deteriorate his quality of life and unfortunately that's so many people that we see on a regular basis they you know all of a sudden feel like you know they've been struck in and they don't know what to do they're giving medications you know talked about earlier you know we had someone come in here those on 81 different medications with all these different side effects you know that's if it impairs your cognitive function you just can't you can't focus there's starting to have all these other symptoms and No wonder you're crumpy. Maybe you're going to multiple doctors and you're getting all these things, but at some point you're going to end up back in front of the family doctor, and they all have to report to the family doctor. So she or he has to be looking at this list of 81 medications, and at no point is she or he going, wait a minute, we need to take a long, hard look at this. I mean, like I said, we had someone last week's with 27 medications. I mean, that's crazy. Exactly, yeah. I mean, when people literally come to their appointments and they have printed off sheets, you know, we have people that come in their purses, you know, they have, you know, in their folders, they have copies because they're giving them to all the different doctors that they're going to and say, hey, here's my 27 medications, here's my 13 medications, you know, that they're doing, you know, it's just, it is, it is absolutely crazy. And like I said, unfortunately, that's the typical medical model is, there's just this layering on of more drugs, more, more surgery. surgeries, just continually mastering of the issue. Like I said, our goal is the exact opposite. We want to try and get you to your highest feeling of health. See us as at least as possible. Can you get off as many medications? Enjoy the highest quality of life. We just had a lady that came into our office, and she could only walk about 10 steps when she first came in. She could only, you know, walk for a very, very short period of time. And she actually just sends us a video of her dancing at her daughter's wedding. And she was just so over the moon, you know, that she could barely even walk. And then she said she was. was the last one off the dance floor, you know, at almost midnight. And she could only walk about 10 steps, you know, before she came to see us. That's just great. You love stories like that, man. Yeah, how can you beat that? I mean, we have people, I think we have four people that are in their 90s, really. That was 102 years old, you know, and you think, like you said, they think that you think that they were in their 30s, you know. But one of them came in literally in a wheelchair, then went to a walker, then went to a cane, then got rid of the cane. And now she's, she'll only like she's 30 years old again, and she's 100. two years old i just took a hundred and two years ago so it's 104 now okay back to uh the normandy beaches where he landed wow that's amazing and uh we do listener trips and he was um on that listener trip and uh you know there were people in their 50s he was more sprightly than they were That's incredible. For real. Yeah. So he's blessed with young jeans as well. He's a really nice guy. He's 104 now. Hi, Howard, if you're listening. We love you, man. You know that. All right. Well, look, we've had obviously questions throughout the day. You're getting questions from the phone number as well. And I want to end my conversation with you today with that number because I really want people to call. As with everything. finding out what you're dealing with is the biggest issue. Information is power. So you do this assessment, which includes eight tests. Can you give us an idea of what they are? Yeah. So for neuropathy specifically, we do eight different sensory examinations. So there's all different parts of nerve fibers. So we want to test each of one, everyone of them, hot, cold, soft, sharp.

all the different sensations we want to measure exactly what's going on with each of those electric shock sensations we do a pinwheel there's all these different types of tests that we do to calculate the exact level of nerve damage for neuropathy now if you're coming in with sciatica back pain headaches is one way to get amazing results we just had a lady in here who literally couldn't remember a day in her life since she was a little girl without a day of headaches her parents said she and she talked she complained about headaches and first after one treatment she had the first day of her life that she could remember without headaches and so depending on on like I said. After one treatment. Yeah. I mean, we've had a guy that hadn't felt his feet in literally over 20 years. Couldn't drive his car. A wife had to drive him around. Six weeks in he felt his feet for the first time in 20 years. So he just cried and broke down in the shower. He was an old tough farmer. His wife said she hadn't seen him cry in 20 years either. But depending on what you have going on, we do different tests. So for the neuropathy, we do the eight different tests. Depending on what other conditions like the satica, we want to measure all the different nerve levels. We want to measure the muscle activities. We want to see the structural alignment. The Federal Aviation Administration says there's a nationwide ground stop affecting all American airline flights that are not airborne. The ground stop is the result of an IT outage. American Airlines says they're currently working on the problem and we'll bring you more details when they become available. Sorry, that was a weird rejoin, but so as you just heard, nationwide ground stop for all American Airlines flights that are not in the air due to an IT problem. That is a real problem. We're actually going to reach out right now to my friend Dean Birch and see if he can bring us any more on that. and we'll try and get him to uh join us can you i'm literally texting him right now can you join us right now question mark okay i've just texted him uh and i am also sending um his uh phone number or am i because that Text did not go through, which often means he's in the air, because he does a lot of travel himself, as you can imagine. So anyway, he's, that's interesting. We'll see if we can reach him or not. But anyway, that's obviously a huge problem with somebody who flew last night. I looked at when I got to the airport last night on the board of departing planes, right? There were... a bunch of departing planes, as you can imagine. And let me go to that page. Here you go. So there's just on one board. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. There were ten. And of those ten, only two were not marked as delayed. And mine was one of the ones not marked as delayed. So that's what I walked into yesterday. So a ground stop. That's a huge deal. Absolute huge deal. And that's fascinating. We'll keep an eye on that. It's an IT issue. The carrier says it's battling a system-wide IT outage, which is leaving thousands of travelers facing massive delays as they are waiting to figure this thing out. So that is a huge problem. The FAA has issued this ground stop. Obviously, they've disrupted operations across its network. American has acknowledged this on X. We're currently experiencing a system-wide IT outage. Our IT team is working to get everything restored as quickly as possible. They're not saying what caused that outage. So the ground stop prevents American from taking off anywhere in the country. It's not their ground stop. It's the FAA's ground stop. And so that means they are unable to take off. So if you're on American, if you're headed to the airport right now to catch a flight in a few hours, hopefully it's all resolved by them. but you may want to check with your airline as soon as you arrive or if you haven't left yet because that's going to have a knock-on effect everywhere that could actually last for days to be perfectly honest with you all right it is 629 we will pause here and then continue our conversation straight ahead this is the simon conway ship

All across the great state of Iowa, it is Simon Conway Show. American Air has just taken to X to say that their systems are coming back online now, and there will be an update later on. They say that the ground stop has been lifted, and flights are getting ready to depart. So maybe they just turned it off and turned it on again. Right, that's how these things are supposed to work, right? So maybe that's what they did. I don't know, but that's where we are right now. Okay, before we do anything else, let me remind you, you've still got about 20 minutes to win $1,000 by taking the word dollar. Okay, talking of how things work, by the way, the word for this hour is dollar. Yeah, I think I said that, but just in case. Dollar, do that right now, and good luck. Okay, there's a gap. poll out, which says U.S. economic confidence has improved in July. Joining us to talk about that is Dan Veroni. He is an economic strategist. Are we the White House? Dan, first of all you're very welcome. The White House has been saying for weeks and weeks that the economy is a lot better than people are leading everyone to believe. Is that now breaking through to the public? So great question. So let's talk about the numbers first. So core inflation fell, headline inflation fell, real hourly earnings are up. In addition, core capital goods numbers are up. Shipments are up, durable goods shipments are up. that also I'll share that retail sales increased. In June, they've increased throughout the first half of the year. What that says is that despite uncertainty, despite the challenges, that the economy is doing pretty well. However, it's broken through somewhat with the American people. I would say they're less pessimistic, but they're not yet confident. Okay, so all those numbers that you gave are great. I agree. They're absolutely great. But when I'm in the grocery store, I'm not thinking about that. I'm thinking about, man, that chicken's expensive. So economics is a lot, how consumers feel.

and make no mistake about it, every consumer, including you and I when we go to the food store, not just the chicken, it's the vegetables, it's the beef, it's the pork, the cereal, so on and so forth. Now, what I will say to you is that we're in the middle of what is known as an energy price shock. So 60% of these elevated prices today are coming from the higher energy prices related to the conflict with Iran. And when that dissipates or goes away, my expectation is that prices will fall pretty significantly. Okay, so that is when we'll really start to feel it. in our own pocketbooks. But these headline numbers are, as I said, genuinely important. Who actually decides how happy we are with the economy? I mean, I said this was a Gallup thing. It's their economic confidence index. It's been around a very long time. Who are they calling? Are they calling Joe Schmo? Or are they calling no one? Gallup is the oldest and most respected polling organization in the country. And make no mistake about it. I think they're terrific at what they do. But what I will tell you is that... When you look at not just the last year in a few months, but you look at the prior four years, it's a cumulative effect over what everybody is feeling. So when consumers go to the store, they're saying, is this ever going to end? And the answer is it is going to end. And we're seeing a breakthrough in the numbers. There is... If there was no consumer confidence, the numbers I've shared with you, like on capital goods and retail sales and durable goods. So durable goods are like the dishwashers, the washers, the dryers, you know, and so on and so forth. Those are really strong numbers, and people are feeling better, but they're not feeling high levels of confidence, and that high level of confidence has a lot to do with what they see at the gas pump. What they see at the gas pump gives them uncertainty, and that's why they're not all the way across the lines saying, I feel great about what the next six months or the next year look like. Right, and you know, we just did a road trip not last weekend the weekend before because our son finally came back from deployment after two and a half years, and so we went to see him. And I can tell you, that was a long road trip, right? It was about 10-hour journey each way. And the difference in gas prices across the country is just really quite incredible. So we were near like the three...

320 mark when we left. I think the most we paid was 436. Why is there that massive differential between states when it comes to the price of gas? If you say, okay, it's not like crazy California with their taxes, because we understand that, but these are not those states. So why is there this massive differential? So a great question. So in states like Illinois, where I used to live, I don't live there anymore, I've been a Virginia resident for almost 15 years. What I'll tell you, in states like Illinois, they have things like the motor fuel taxes, they've got environmental taxes, and that's why if you're in Illinois, you'll see those prices go up. So each state, so in some states, when there are states, let's say they have no income tax, States or low-income tax, they've got to fund education and state operations in some way. So it can be in the form of gas taxes. It can be in the form of food taxes. And that's just the way, why you see the big differences. Okay. Well, yeah, it was definitely marked differences. We were very, very aware of it. But, okay, so we're feeling better about the country? Yes. Some of these numbers, just so everybody understands, if it was plus 100%, that would mean all of us thought the conditions, the economic conditions were excellent. If it was minus 100, all of us would feel the conditions were very, very poor. And we're now at minus 31. We've been at minus 45, so it's a great improvement. It really is. But what's also interesting to me, digging deeper into the numbers, is that the number of people who think their economic conditions are excellent or good, that's gone up from 16% in May to 22% in July, while those calling it poor, that dipped from 49 to 44. So when we're seeing that... I think that it is breaking through to we the people. It is absolutely breaking through to we the people. And I expect that as we get to the end of the year and into the first quarter of next year, that people will be feeling far better. And the other thing, Simon, that you haven't asked me is what the Federal Reserve is going to do tomorrow. And I'm happy to talk to that. Well, yeah, if you want to gaze into the crystal ball, go ahead. I mean, I think they're going to do nothing myself. That's my prediction. You've nailed it. I think that Kevin Warsh has asked the Federal Open Market Committee for some time to get his arms around things. I think he's appointed five different task groups on the Federal Reserve. I think they're going to come back with different findings. I think he's also going to say that headline and core inflation and wholesale prices are down. We should not be raising rates at this point, and while he'll say for the time being, I'll agree we shouldn't cut. But let's give some degree of certainty and keep rates where they are. So tomorrow at 2 o'clock, their press release will say we're doing nothing, and he'll speak to this at 2.30 Eastern time tomorrow.

Now then, let's talk about American Airlines. So there's a bunch of stuff to report to you. The FAA issued a nationwide ground stop for all American Airlines planes on the ground. The airline had a system-wide IT outage. American has now posted on its own ex-account, a technology issue, briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems on Tuesday evening. Systems are coming back online now, and flights are departing again. We put a temporary groundstop in place while teams work to resolve the issue. We apologize to our customers. for the inconvenience. Meanwhile, their customers are not all agreeing, because in answer to that post that I just read you, one of their customers said, as someone currently trapped on one of your plane since 4.30 p.m., it did not briefly impact your systems. It is still an ongoing issue. We still have not been told anything, and our pilot does not even have an update. So that's interesting. I don't know related or not, but someone else has posted on my Facebook that Unity Point is down as well. Mm-hmm.

So, that's where we are right now, and obviously news will keep an eye on this, and as it changes, they will bring you those updates for sure. Jean Carroll. We'll see what they say. going to be interesting as well. So, um, Meanwhile, a federal court has now declined to block the president's mail ballot order. That is a really significant thing as well. So a federal appellant panel today refused to block the executive order which seeks to restrict mail in voting. And that's come a day after the administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court. if they would weigh in on the proposal in a separate case. So a lot going on. We've got our eyes on all of it.
