Law enforcement efforts to cut down on car thefts showing some positive results. The state's auto theft task force is reporting a 35% decrease in vehicle thefts compared with this time last year. Task Force commander, John Picker, tells Fox 31 car theft rings are organized operations. You have the person who's at the top saying, okay, when you steal the car, I want you to take you this location, and we're going to have a group come pick it up, and that group's going to drive it down to Mexico, to the cartel to sell. Pickard says locating ringleaders of car theft groups intercepts their operations. More than 3,000 fewer cars have been stolen in Colorado so far this year than last year. More people are renting apartments in the Denver metro area than ever before. 6,800 new apartment units were leased in the first quarter of 2026, well over the average annual rate of about 6,200. Apartment appraisers and consultants owner and report author Scott Rathbun says that's being driven by high housing prices. The median single family home prices back in 2005 in Denver were 13% higher than the national median, and they're now 56% higher than the national median. Moreau's employment agreements as if the governance model changes. He can deem it a violation of his contract. President Trump said to hold meetings with two key U.S. allies today. Kai Sato left Catalina Island on June 7th for his first solo row to Hawaii. Two weeks in, his mask broke. And the phone he was using for navigation stopped working. in a lifetime is a major milestone. And he said, we're now in the singularity. What does he really mean by that? Yeah, so singularity is generally used to describe a moment in time when AI surpasses the capability of the human brain. And it's sometimes called artificial general intelligence or AGI, kind of depending on who you talk to, the definitions are different here. And that gets at the kind of larger problem with this terminology and this kind of talk, which is that it's kind of loosely defined. What are the capabilities of the human brain? How would you measure if a technology surpasses that? Even still, Sam Altman over the weekend on a podcast said that we've achieved that level of sort of artificial intelligence in advancement. And it comes just a couple days after that, you know, AI hacking incident that their models carried out seemingly without open AI knowing about it. The bigger picture here is that in that specific instance, the models were doing what they were told to do, right? This isn't an instance of, like, Gynet coming online. These were models that were tasked with solving a problem, and they tried to solve that problem. They tried to do it in a kind of unconventional way, but like they weren't... behaving on their own volition, right? Like, they didn't do this on their own. I think, you know, the sort of, you know, these models going rogue kind of talk is a little bit out over the skis of what actually happened here. And the bigger picture, of course, is that the AI space is facing a lot of headwind. It's great to talk about how transformative this technology will be in the future. But right now, the AI industry spends way more on developing the technology than it makes in profits. There's that growing competition out of China. There's also growing backlash from communities. who are mad about the proliferation of data centers. AI advocates are getting booed at commencement addresses by students who are mad about what the AI industry has done to their fields. The technology continues to be imperfect. It hallucinates even the most advanced models struggle to be consistently accurate. So companies like OpenAI kind of need a win and sort of converse to what it seems like saying that these models broke free of their environment and tried to hack into this other system. It allows Sam Altman to kind of cast this as his models are really advanced. And that's why I think he's saying that the singularity is here. He's able to now say that the transformation that AI will bring about isn't this futuristic concept anymore. It's right in front of us. Whether he's right about that remains an open question. Looks like actually both directions in there have been restricted. We've got 85 at 112th, kind of backed up quite a bit right now. It looks real heavy up through that stretch. That's construction related in southbound 25. The ramp getting on to eastbound 270 is starting to slow quite a bit also. It's a very, very long ramp. It's down to one lane as you get on 270, but 270 looks good out of Commerce City. A high temperature, little cooler, more seasonal for what we see around this time of the year, right around 90 degrees. Overnight low in the mid-60s, 90s stick around tomorrow as well. Currently, we're at 70 in Denver. It remains a good time to be an apartment renter in the Denver metro area. Apartment appraisers and consultant owners, Scott Rathbun, says the average rent price in the second quarter of the year down from last year to $1,776 per month, but it's starting to stabilize. For the last year and a quarter, we've seen basically significant rent relief. for renters. Rathbun says concessions remain at an all-time high, but a reduction in new builds could start to change that trend within the next year. Efforts by police across the state cutting down on car thefts seems to be working, according to the state auto theft task force. Commander John Pickard tells Fox 31 vehicle theft rings have strategies that include a ringleader instructing car thieves to drop off a stolen vehicle at a specific location. So you have to have someone who organizes all that. And so if you can cut that head off, they don't know how to organize it. Pickard says stolen cars are then driven to Mexico to be sold to cartels. The task force reports a 35% decrease in vehicle thefts compared with this time last year. At one point, thieves were stealing 100 cars a month at DIA. Neither the DPS school board members nor superintendent, Dr. Alex Marrero, talking much about an executive session related to Marrero's concern about his contract. But Marrero signaled he'd look more, he'd look to move in the board's direction. Organizations evolve and agreements evolve. If that's the desire and the will of the board, then that's what shall happen and I will adjust accordingly.

At issue is a complaint Marrero had about the board, which he says has been overstepping its authority concerning day-to-day operations, which is not allowed under the policy governance model. If the governance model is altered, Marrero could deem it as a termination of his contract. Denver City Council voting to put a new Excel Energy franchise agreement on the November ballot for voters. Excel Regional VP Holly Velasquez Horthads says the utility worked with city leaders and community groups to negotiate the deal. One of the reasons I am proud of this package is because it exists because you all, Denver, pushed us. The new 20-year agreement would require Excel to upgrade its infrastructure, including bearing some of the overhead lines. Opponents of the proposal, though, say that it doesn't do enough for Excel customers. Police are searching for a driver after a deadly crash in Aurora. First responders were called to an area near South Pohotton Road and Jewel yesterday at the east of E470. A bicycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are still investigating the crash as a hit and run, and they're working to identify the vehicle involved. Parks and Wildlife Officers and the Pueblo County dive team say they've recovered the body of a woman at Lake Pueblo, State Park. Officers responded after a woman in her mid-30s was reported missing by family members. They searched a difficult area with boulders and steep cliffs near the campground and wound up using sonar equipment in an underwater vehicle in the waters below in order to locate her body. A big day of talks for President Trump at the White House. President Trump is set to host back-to-back meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It will be Trump's first face-to-face meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu since the Iran war began exactly five months ago. The White House originally predicted the war would only last a matter of weeks. With the war now entering a six-month, there's a fragile pause in the fighting. President Trump insists friendly talks with Iran are ongoing. That's ABC's Karen Waugh. While in Washington, both Benjamin Netanyahu and Volodymyr Zelensky will also be attending today's funeral for late Senator Lindsey Graham. In the case of the killings of four Idaho college students, Brian Coburger. pleaded guilty to the murders and is now proclaiming his innocence. The self-confessed killer is seeking to withdraw his guilty plea, saying he was coerced into the admission. Coburger, a former criminology student, had researched false confessions just months before the murders, writing a paper focusing on procedural injustice in the American system that has produced many false confessions. Critics suggest his paper could show that Coburger always planned to claim a false confession to manipulate the system. Either way, legal experts say withdrawing a guilty plea after sentencing is unlikely to succeed. That's ABC's Hannah Bata. And sunshine and storms, both on the way for the Mile High City today. The FAA now says hundreds of seats in Boeing's 737 max jets were incorrectly installed and need to be fixed. If not, those seats could injure passengers during an emergency landing or a hard landing. The FAA's proposed changes would apply to 453 of the jets pretty much every national air. airline in the United States use 737 max planes, including United Airlines, Denver-based frontier, and JetBlue are the only two remaining airlines in the U.S. to use entire Airbus fleets. Some companies are simply winners. Even with the health and wellness craze happening, people are still drinking Coca-Cola and its products. The company has posted second quarter earnings and revenue that topped expectations, raising its outlook for the full year. Coke says the company has seen a rising demand for its drinks. Coke specifically has risen in popularity in the United States, but even more in places like India, with their youngest generation turning to the drink and making it a status symbol. Coca-Cola capitalized on the shortage of aluminum supply during the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, turning the drink into a luxury in India. You're up today on the latest business of money news. Jonathan Steele joining us with a look at our early Tuesday morning drive in the K-A traffic center. We're starting to slow quite a bit up north, I-25 Southbound. It's because the ramp from Southbound to eastbound 270 is backed up onto I-25. So in turn, it has slowed all lanes down from about the Thornton Parkway so far. It's a little bit of a delay there. Certainly the ramp is, too. It'll take several extra minutes as you make the transition onto 270. I-76 still in pretty good shape. slowing westbound to southbound there. I-25 between downtown of the Tech Center are just still in pretty good shape, just a little build-up, but 10 minutes on the drive time. They did pick up the cones down on C-470. I'm not seeing any slowing through there, but coming down Floyd Hill, if you're heading into the foothills, is still jamming quite a bit. This is the westbound side heading down through U.S. 6. Jonathan Steele on K.A. 8.50 a.m. and 94.1 FM. The Rockies had Monday off to regroup after a tough weekend set. They will play two games in San Diego before returning home for six this week. The wife of Kansas City Chief's Offensive Coordinator and former CU Buff standout, Eric Biennamy, is hospitalized in stable condition after allegedly being shot by their son. 27-year-old Elijah Biennamy was arrested by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office after deputies found Mia Biennamy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Ashburn. Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid says Beenemy has a lot of support within the organization. Things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. Seattle police say a teen suspect is in custody, another suspect dead. A third still at large following that mass shooting that took place at a food festival near the city's Space Needle on Sunday. We now know that at least two people exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory. One is in custody, and a second has been identified as the 19-year-old deceased man. At Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, three people are killed, four others injured, including a two-year-old boy, and what is now being investigated as a possible gang violence. North End I-25 is a little sluggish down from Thornton. Getting on that 270 ramp from southbound to eastbound has been backing up a little bit. Eastside looks pretty good. I'm just starting to see some slight slowing on the ramp getting on to Pena, but it's wide open into the terminal. 225. 10 minutes through Aurora right now, both directions between I-70 and I-25. Gina Gondack on Colorado's morning news. Well, after a very hot, hot, hot weekend, we're seeing more rain and storm chances moving into our forecast for the next couple of days and some more seasonal warm temperatures. Joining us on the K-Wate Common Spirit Health hotline is Fox 31 meteorologist Kylie Burst. Kylie, appreciate your time as always. I'm curious of what we saw over the weekend, 103 for the Denver area. Some people might just be saying, Okay, yeah, it's end of July. It's hot. That's typical. But is it actually typical to see in the city around this time? No, 103 is very, very unusual. In fact, we've only had in 154 years of keeping records 14 days hitting 103 or higher. So it's been since 2018 that we've been that warm. So definitely not normal for this time of year. Where do we rank right now when it comes to just how many days we've had topping 100 degrees or hitting 100 degrees? Do you know what? Yeah, so we've hit into the 100s three times this season, which puts us at number 10 for the most that we've seen as far as summers ago, because we don't always hit 100 degrees. I'd say in the last 20, 30 years it's become more common that we see at least once a summer. But three times that puts us in the top 10, there's only been nine other summers. Again, in 154 years, I had more days hitting 100 degrees. I know it's probably challenging to look this far ahead, but could we be taking that top spot this year? Oh, I don't think so. I mean, the top spots back in 2012 and they had 13 days. I mean, something really massive would have to happen for us to get another 10 days. I do think it's possible and I think it's likely that we might get to one or two more days. That would put us in the top like four or five for hottest summers when it comes to 100 degree days. But that top spot, I mean. 2012 hitting it 13 times. The next highest is the second highest in 2005 we hit it seven times. So that was just an extreme year. Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to see that for sure. Okay, let's look at what we're expecting for today. It seems like a little potential for some severe weather in the forecast. Yeah, and so we're talking about that level one threat for the heart of the metro, out over the eastern plains. My concerns for the metro today would be some larger hail, some dusty winds. Because of the level one threat, this is very, very isolated. So most of us will not see that hail, but it's certainly a possibility. And then out over the eastern plain, especially later on this evening, we do have a chance for seeing some excessive rainfall and some flooding concerns with a flood watch. We could get as much as two inches of rain falling in just about 30 minutes. How about those heading to ACDC at Empowerfield tonight? Can we expect rain or any potential of maybe a delay in the show due to any of the forecast? Yeah.

I think it's going to, I mean, I don't want to say 100%. I think it should be mostly fine. Most of the storm should clear by then. There might be a couple of stragglers kind of hanging around, kind of like what we had last night. So, of course, they're going to be watching it and making it sure people are safe. But most of the action should be over by the time the concert starts. And you talked about a couple inches of rain for the eastern plains. How do we really stand when it comes to the drought monitor? Are we doing a little bit better? Are these hot days kind of causing more concern? Yeah, the eastern plains are actually faring pretty well when it comes to our drought conditions right now, but it's the metro area that's just been getting worse and worse. And now we've got that level four out of five drought for most of the metro area and then up in our high country still dealing with that level five out of five, so that exceptional drought. But actually out over the eastern plains, there's several spots where we don't even have any drought conditions. So it's good news out that direction. We could just use some more rain for the rest of our state. And then it sounds like it's a repeat of the weekend. We keep having a little bit of a cool down and then a hot weekend ahead. I know Sundays in particular. I mean, that's when we had 103. This weekend I've got 98 for Sunday. So it's going to be a hot and dry weekend. So I don't, I don't hate watching football on TV, you know, but yeah, I'd say too, but I'm. I'm a little spoiled. Like, if we're talking about the very highest level of seats in the stadium, I just won't go. Really? Yeah, yeah, I'm just, I don't need to be down low, but I just want. Yeah, hot take. I kind of like the nosebleeds. You like the nosebleeds. I think it's a fun environment. I mean, yes, if I could get a closer seat, sure, but I'm not going to, I'm not going to scoff at a nose. It is a different crowd up there. It is fun. Just like I remember, okay, we're running like, so when I was in college, I was in New York City, and the big sports thing in the city is Madison Square Garden. And I don't care much about basketball, but I would go to New York Rangers hockey games. And the seats there are organized by color.

And I forget the order, but it's like red is down low and then orange, yellow, blue, green, something like that. And so the cheapest ones are the greens or the blues or something. And that's all I could afford as a college student. And one, you know, one time I think I snuck down and sat in the expensive seats. But the people are completely different. And the people who are up high. We're the serious fans who weren't just like the people who could afford $400 a ticket. And they knew everything about every player. And it was actually kind of more fun up there, I have to say. It's fun. I like it. Yeah. Closer to the flyover up there too. Right over your head. Not in Madison Square Garden. Powerfield, though, it's actually very exciting. That's pretty cool. The fireworks and pyro behind you. I'd say two. And, you know, more lately, years ago when they were terrible, maybe one, maybe none. I mean, I'm always a fan, but am I going to spend money to go see them when they're not good?
