Live from the KWQC Broadcast Center in downtown Davenport with Morgan OTA and Kyle Keel. This is Quad Cities Live. Today on QCL, avoiding back-to-school body pain. Nelson Chiropractic is here to share tips on how to properly wear a backpack and avoid pain that could disrupt learning. And it may still be summer, but right now is the time to think about keeping warm in the colder months with the new fireplace. Today we take you to Fireplaces Plus showroom for a look at what the Quad Cities business has to offer. Plus a grand reopening celebration for the clothing comb, a curated collection of local businesses specializing in women's clothing and accessories. We'll have a look inside and a preview of what's new in the fresh space. Hello and thank you so much for watching Quad Cities Live. I'm Kyle Keel. Morgan has the day off. Living and playing in the Quad Cities, we know there is no shortage of music, art, history, and entertainment. And for the last two decades, the Cultural Trust has brought together many of the organizations to ensure the experiences will be around for generations to come. And now they're giving us a chance to experience all of them through Culture Bright. One of those organizations benefiting from Culture Bright is Quad City Symphony Orchestra. Executive Director Brian Baxter is here, along with Jen Lewis Snyder, president and CEO of the Cultural Trust. Thanks for being here today. Thank you. Yeah, very exciting times. You know, I think this has been a really great series that we've had with the Cultural Trust, kind of highlighting this event coming up a little bit later in the month. So Jen, talk a little bit more and remind our viewers about Culture Bright. Sure. Culture Bright is an invitation from the Cultural Trust and our six legacy partners to experience the Quad Cities in a new and unique way. From live music to art, history, science, to live performances. We are inviting everyone to consume. because we know that independently all of our legacy partners are a very worthy investment and when you put all of them together that investment compounds absolutely so why is it important to have these collaborations it's life you know it's our existence consuming art and culture is you know sharing life together and we want to invite the Quad Cities to do that we have so many incredible legacy partners deeply rooted art and cultural amenities that are destination worthy people are coming to the Quad Cities to visit yeah you know if you are a and you should be having so much civic pride that we have these amazing 125-year-old symphony in our community. I mean, it's incredible. It absolutely is. So, Brian, that takes us to the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. How they benefited by being part of Culture Bright and the Cultural Trust. Yeah, absolutely. I really can't overemphasize the tremendous value that support from the Cultural Trust brings, not just to us as an organization, but to the community. And the ways that the Cultural Trust convenes all of this culture together and and You know, one of the things we've been talking about is introducing audiences to each other. Yes. Like, you know, for example, the Putnam Museum, folks who go there and folks who attend the symphony and that sort of the, I guess, cross-pollination that happens. And so I guess when you think about Culture Bright and this Culture Bright music series, performance series, you get to kind of see it on display at like super high octane over a week. There's going to be so many wonderful events.

be on full display so it's really really exciting absolutely so august 22nd we've got riverfront pops that's returning to leclair park in downtown davenport so jenn this is all part of the culture bright summer series that we've been talking about so kind of give an overview of the series itself because it's what eight straight days yes yes it kicks off on august 16th and we did that intentionally alternating currents is a great warm up go consume during the 13th through the 16th and then when they conclude we're going to grab that baton and kickoff at the Botanical Center with Yonder Road and Railroad Earth, which is sold out. And then Marley Matlin is coming to the Putnam on Wednesday. And then Common Court is opening their new space in the Redstone Room with the public opening on Thursday and the private opening on Sunday. And then we have Art of the Brew. We're going to rock some 90s country music on Friday as a pregame to the symphony scoring the who on Saturday. Yeah, so Brian, talk about that. What can people expect this year, Riverfront Pop? August 22nd. Yeah, absolutely. And we're really honored to be a part of this whole series. I think it's really neat to tie all these pieces together. With Quetziti Bank of Trust Riverfront Pops on Saturday, it's been a 43-year tradition, I think. Don't quote me exactly, but it's over 40 years, and we've been doing it every year. And so the main event, we're featuring Music of the Who with Symphony Orchestra. So if you've been to these before, you see sort of the symphonic, really, of these classic really well-known acts. And so this year we're featuring all these incredible songs by The Who. But that's not it. We have a pre-show featuring our youth symphony orchestra, our top-level youth group, you know, highlighting how big a part of our program's music education is. Oh, sure. And then we close the evening with our traditional patriotic set. So we do the 1812 overture, stars and stripes forever. We'll celebrate America 250 with a whole bunch of fireworks to the end of the show. So it's a real huge experience from front to back. And of course, this is a tradition. for many Quadidians. I mean, we're looking at some of the video from the past. And you just see thousands of people in downtown Davenport. So how can we get a hold of tickets? Yeah, so you can go to culturebright.com is the whole series. Dot org. That's okay. That's okay. Thank you for directing. I made that mistake before, yeah. And then that'll take you to any of them, and it'll take you to our QCSO.org site where you can get tickets to Riverfront Pops. And the GA tickets started. They're $23 for adults. $5 for kids. Super affordable. Is there some sort of deadline coming up that people need to know about? Yes. So I believe it's Thursday, next Thursday or the Thursday after the door price for the tickets kicks in. So you want to get your ticket a little bit earlier to get the cheapest level. All right. Thank you so much, Brian and Jen. Appreciate it. Culturebright.org for everything about the Culture Bright summer series. We appreciate it. And Brian, we'll see you tomorrow. Thank you. We're on the riverfront box. Well, next on Quad Cities Live, 35 years of keeping Quad Cities warm and cozy. We will take you to Fireplaces Plus for a look at options to keep your space warm during the colder months.

We're watching Quad Cities Live. We're here at Fireplaces Plus in Bettendorf where they've been helping keep families warm and cozy for more than 35 years. Joining me now is owner Keith Bile. Keith, thanks for inviting us today. Not a problem. I know it's warm outside, but we've got it warm inside too today. It's cozy inside. I'm one of those that loves the fireplace year-round, so I'm loving this right now. It's amazing to be here. What you've done is amazing. So tell us a little bit about why you decided to start this business more than 35 years ago back in 1980. and really how it's kind of grown and evolved over all these years. Well, when I first got started, like a lot of people, I worked for somebody in the same industry for years. I learned an awful lot and I respected them very much and still do today. But I just had an opportunity. My wife was eight months pregnant, so what's the better time to quit your job and start a business from scratch? Your storefront is incredible, very spacious. So can you describe where we are right now because we got a lot of room to walk around? Well, we're actually now where our location is, we've been here for 20 years. It has worked out well. It's a central location for both Iowa and Illinois. It's convenient to get to, so it's very, very good location for us. 12,000 square feet? Yeah, we're pretty got a lot of square footage. Everything's in-house. We don't have an off-site warehouse or anything so we can keep track of what we have, have enough room to build enough display so people can see the product because you can't see it from a brochure. feel touch and visually see the actual product. I agree with that, especially when we're trying to choose something that's going to go in our homes potentially for the rest of our lives. It's important to see that. So yes, tell me about what people will find when they walk inside the store. We've got beautiful fireplaces around us, but there is plenty to see. Yeah, we sell our main focus, of course, is fireplaces and has been for years, as well as woodburning stoves. We sell a lot of woodburning stoves. Wow. companies that are in the hearth industry they're not into that product anymore it's more difficult uh more complicated install and the customer base is not as big because you got to do work the gas products you slip a switch but we still like the wood smell and the concept of burning wood and actually even reducing potential your fuel costs then of course we sell not only the wood products and the gas we also sell electric fireplaces Then we've dabbled in gas girls for years because that's kind of a summertime spin-off. But the fireplaces, that's the core of our business. That's for sure. Makes sense. Something else that really sets you apart here at Fireplaces Plus. You mentioned this already, your team. There's a lot of cumulative experience inside this store. Yeah, we've got over 150 years of experience in the hearth industry, which is pretty unusual. But we've been blessed with...

9:38

good employees that have stuck around through thick and thin and have had patience and help help grow the business. So why is now a really great time for somebody to contact fireplaces plus we're in the middle of the summer so people aren't necessarily thinking about you know putting the fireplace on, maybe just me. But this is a really good time to get started. It's a good time just because now you can do your research, you can figure out kind of what you want. Obviously, we're somewhat of a seasonal business with the remodeling part of it and existing residential homes. And we get booked up. So the sooner you get booked in and figure out what you want and get on the schedule, then we can meet your timetable. you know, we get into mid-October. Yeah. We start getting booked out there longer than the consumer wants to and longer than we'd like to, but we just have a limited resource of manpower and we only do so much work. Yeah, once that cool air hits, people start thinking about it. Now is the time to really start thinking about it. Okay, so speaking of fireplaces, we're in this beautiful space. Can you describe some of the brands that you carry? Because really, fireplaces are becoming more energy efficient than ever. Yeah, they definitely are. We probably sell close to probably 15 different brands, which is kind of unusual. We're not just like a single car dealership. Of those brands, we sell a company called Mendota made in Iowa. We sell another company called Cozy Heat. It's made in Minnesota. Quite a few. Quite a few different manufacturers. And that's the only way you can give the customers what they want. I mean, it's not everybody can feel everybody's needs. Right, give him a choice. Give them a choice. So what's the process for a customer, a prospective customer, let's say, considering giving you guys a call or just stopping by and walking in the store? So the first thing I was, hey, stop in the store, take a look, see what we have. Maybe what we show, it's not what you were thinking for, but we've got to get either see some pictures of what you've got. going as a project or see the home. Ideally, it's best to see the homes. And we don't charge for that. We never will. And we probably travel about a 75 mile radius of the Quad City. So we carry a big inventory. We carry a... a large area that we cover so yeah trying to service that customer well in honor of a big birthday you have coming up you are celebrating with the community and offering some promotions and some sales here so people should keep an eye out for that yeah that's coming the month of August I kind of reached a milestone I'll be 70 which is kind of amazing think thankfully I'm seeing that number and my wife has been part of probably the main reason I'm still here. So we're going to celebrate where, you know, people have given to me, to me and our company for years. It's time to give back a little bit and say, hey, let's try to move some sales forward, give people some good deals, kind of in the off season before we hit. And they can benefit from that. So the wise shopper. Yeah, wonderful. A celebration for everyone indeed. Well, Keith.

12:48

Thank you so much for having us in today. Congratulations on so many years here. Yeah, well, thank you very much and thank you, KWQC. Fireplaces Plus is located in Bettendorf at 1745 State Street. Next on Quad Cities Live, celebrate the grand reopening of the Clothing Co in LeClair this weekend, plus a special announcement of some of the vendors featured inside the new space. Quad Cities Live continues. Tis the season. As kids head back to school, it's a sure sign that the summer season is winding down. And it's time to start thinking of fall, specifically fall fashion. And that's where the Clothing Co comes in. And to kick off the season, you're invited to celebrate a new space in LaClair. Katie Thompson is the owner of the Clothing Co. And she is here to share the exciting news. A couple exciting things that we're going to talk about today, Katie. Welcome back to the show. It's wonderful to be here. Yeah, yeah. So we were just talking. It'll be four years this fall. that you've had the clothing co up and going and getting some changes but still the same great clothing. So talk a little bit about how the clothing co started and kind of how you got to where you are today. Sure. We started as the market, a journey to joy. We had clothing, accessories, home decor, the whole nine yards, but we really saw that there was a niche in our community that we needed a clothing boutique. And in particular, what's unique about the clothing go and what was unique about the market is that our store features multiple small business owners. So we are not just one storefront. We're 12 small businesses under one roof. And that really came out of the idea that I wanted to amplify the message of other small businesses and give them a platform. Absolutely. Pop-up markets are awesome on the weekend, but we tend to miss them, weather, sports, kids activities. Always something going on. This gives you seven days a week that you don't have to miss out. Yeah, and it's all about supporting local as well, which I think is what makes the clothing. co very unique so the new and exciting news is that you have a new home but you didn't have to go very far We picked up and we scooted about 10 steps to the north into a new storefront. Our old friends nest modern goods moved down to the south end of town. And big shout out to live in her team. We're happy for her. And we're also happy that we got to move into her old home. So we added some square footage, nice, bright, natural light. So our customers can still find us very easily, literally one door down. Park in the same spot you would, as you were saying before the show. You absolutely could. Don't have to change anything. Well, that's very exciting. I mean, it just shows the growth that you've had and the growth that the other businesses in that place have had as well. So congrats to Nest as well. And we've got some breaking news here. We do. So cue the breaking news music. All right. So you've got three new businesses that are going to be part of the clothing coat. We do. We love the people who've been with us for the past four years. We're excited to welcome three new businesses in our storefront. Oh, that's exciting. All right. Who are they? All right. You ready? Yeah, let's hear it. So fan favorite from the Quad Cities, Lily.

15:56

and Pine, Bath and Body Care is joining us. Katie Miller out of, actually, out of LaClair, Iowa. Yeah, okay. Is one of our past vendors with us at the market that we could hardly keep products on the shelves, and she will be rejoining us in the clothing. A lot of people will probably be excited to hear that. Absolutely. Yes. Okay. All right, who do you have next? Next up, we had Midwest Boulevard. Okay. Sarah and her family are located on the Iowa side of the river, specializing in graphic team. She does a ton of fun stuff. Kyle, the teachers go crazy over her graphics. I mean, they're very, they're very popping, like they pop right in front of you, got a lot of good color. I can understand what. Absolutely. They're so much fun. And she has everyday messaging, again, things that work really well for teachers, good spirit wear as well. All right, perfect for back to school season. All right, and last but certainly not least. Uh-huh. So Lee and Louise, we have been after her for a bit of time now. And we finally have space. And it is wonderful. She has a college game day collection that she moved into our store. And so primarily focusing on what you're seeing here. Yeah, yeah. And so what's really fun about Lee and Louise, everything is custom made with her products. And she is often at weekend pop-up markets throughout the Quad Cities and people really, like they're looking for her booth. You can now find her all the time. Obviously, we've got a few pieces that you have from your collection. We're running low on time, but I want to talk about your grand reopening happening this weekend because if you spend a little money, you get a little something back. You get a gift. We love a gift. Absolutely. So if you spend $100, you're going to get a $10 gift card for a future purchase. $200, you'll get a $20 gift card for a future purchase. And we don't even have to make it complicated because it's tax-free weekend. So it's always before a tax this weekend. Absolutely. And Katie, I know you recently just mentioned open seven. Seven days a week now through the holiday season. So we've got the hours on your screen. The Clothing Co. The new location right next door, 427 North Cote Road and LeC. Be sure to follow along on Facebook at the Clothing Co. QC for all the latest from Katie and her team there. Katie, congratulations. And we look forward to hearing from you again. Absolutely. Thanks, guys. We'll see you next time. Well, next on Quad Cities Live, it is back to school season. How can you help your kids have a pain-free school year? We'll share some simple posture tips plus a backpack checklist you don't. One of this. Quad Cities Live continues. We have a reminder that KWQC is partnering with the Davenport Schools Foundation. We're doing a drive-up, drop-off school supply drive all day Friday until 6.30 p.m. Here's a look at some of the most needed items. We've got pencils, notebooks, and dry erase markers being some of them. Again, we will be collecting school supplies through our 6 p.m. newscast. So if you're unable to participate in person, you can make a donation online at davenport schools.org slash foundation.

18:53

Well, speaking of back to school, the season is in full swing across the QCA, and you may not realize it, but kids today spend six to ten hours per day sitting, carrying backpacks, and of course using those different screens. That combination can lead to a number of pains in your body, but there are some steps to avoid those pains, helping kids learn better, feel better, and even avoid pain all school year long. Dr. Tracy Nelson of Nelson Chiropractic is here to share some back to school posture tips, as I make sure I'm sitting up straight. Always. Always. Tracy, yeah, thanks for joining us. I always love this topic this time of year because it takes me back to when I was in school and I was not following these tips. And that probably cumulatively had an impact on my learning because if you have this better posture, it can actually lead to better learning. Yeah, when we have a headache, we can't focus. So kids that have pain in school are not going to learn. Yeah, so we really want to make sure that our kids' backpacks aren't causing them pain because that could be a big focal point for pain. So you've got a few tips that you want to share about that. Yeah, so two straps. Always wear two. Sometimes they just throw it over. That was me. Yep. Yeah, and it's cool, right? It is. It's a cool thing to do. You want to wear it on both. You want to wear it on both. You want to make sure that it's tight and it's, you know, it's pulled up as much as possible. So it kind of sits on your... low back a little bit so it's not kind of pulling you back a little bit but the weight is the biggest issue the weight so you're saying 10 to 15% of your body weight that's how much the backpack should wait no more than that that is what's recommended that is a challenge because younger kids you know just one Chromebook is going to put it well over so keep all keep only in there what you need All right, and you kind of talked about it, but we've got a graphic here to show you how to properly wear it. And yep, I recognize on the right there, the slouching backpack that goes down past your bottom and that's a strap. Yeah, yeah. So you definitely don't want to do that. And again, I think the two straps is important to note as well because I think a lot of people, like you said, it's a cool thing to do, just quick and easy, just throw it over the shoulders. So make sure you have both of them. All right, so let's talk about avoiding. the tech neck because I mean I mean we're all on our devices and I'm guilty of this as well like when I was reading the tips I'm like this I'm like oh wait no you want to want to keep it at eye level yeah and I think what a lot of especially teenagers junior high age kids will just kind of lay in their bed or lay around and do things so if you're if you're looking at it it needs to be straight ahead so you want to bring it up to eye level whether you have your knees propped up in a pillow there sure or something at a you know at a counter just bring everything to level okay and you know you're sitting at school or at home and you're on the computer or something typing up a paper research paper get up and move right yes lots of breaks so do some homework take a shower, do some homework, do have your dinner. Like just kind of moving a little bit and not sitting in one place for three hours. And don't look down the whole time. And don't look down. Don't look down. Don't look down. All right. So we definitely want to set the kids up for success at home as well. So you want to make sure that when they're doing the homework, they want to have their feet flat on the ground, right? Yep. A lot of kids and adults actually sit on one foot.

22:02

So that can throw you off. That is a really common thing that we see. So you want to kind of sit straight away. You don't want to sit on a couch if you're, you know, typing and things like that. Laptops are actually not for your lap. Oh yeah, you're right. Yeah, they're not for your lap, so they need to be straight ahead and just pay attention and don't get into bad habits. Yeah, and of course you want to watch for warning signs if your kid is in pain because that can be a sign of maybe not only are they in pain, but they're probably struggling at school. Yeah, just pay attention to actually how heavy that backpack is they're carrying. Yeah. Are they walking home from school with, you know, three times that weight on their back as they should? Balance your backpack, bring screens to eye level, break up sitting the movement. That's the three bees. Easy. Yes, easy, peasy. Well, if you want to learn more about Nelson, chiropractic and the services offered by Dr. Tracy and her team. You can call the phone number on your screen or visit nelson chiropractic.com. Let's set the kids up for a good pain-free school year. Yes, happy first day. Yes, happy first day. Thanks, Tracy. And thank you for watching Quad Cities Live. We will see you again Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Have a great day.
