You know me and Mississippi, all kinds of excited about the State Fair. We love the State Fair. We love all the new foods that we get to try. But that does not mean we forget what it's like to go out for a proper meal at a real restaurant with real people serving you. real at the fair but you know what i mean and uh you know they wait on you that's why they're called waiters and waitresses because they wait on you and uh you get treated right and it's really really nice and so i want you to remember your favorite restaurants during the course of the fair uh owls of course is the iowa machine shed and it just so happens we have the uh the owner in studio mike waylan with your dog Well, it is. Spoiler your dog. National Spoil your dog day. It is. You told me. It is. It absolutely is. She is a sweetie pie. Well, it's kind of spoil your dog day every day at the Wayland House. Yes. Ours as well, buddy. She's very chill. She's laying down now, just hanging out. She's very, very chill. What is she? She's a soft-coated Wheaton Terrier. Most people think it's a Labradoodle, a doodle, but she is, yeah, Irish Farm Dog. She's very, very cute. How long you had her? About four years now. Yeah, we're coming up to that in November with our latest rescue. She's our fourth Wheaton. Oh, no, he will be four. We've had him three years. He's going to be four in November. Yeah. He is not calm. He's a lab. They stayed puppies forever, man. They do. This one was an old lady when she was two, so, yeah, the comest dog I've ever had. We're still waiting. They keep telling us that some switch gets thrown in a lab when they hit three. Well, he's going to be four in November, and there's no switch been thrown yet. He's like, oh, it's a blade of grass. Oh, it's another blade of grass. Oh, there's a person. Oh, there's a dog. Honestly, taking him for a walk is an adventure, to say the least. But anyway, he's a sweetie pie, and we're very, very pleased we got him. He's a very loving dog. Okay, Iowa Machine Shed, my friend. As I already said, I'm going to be there on Wednesday morning because you have all kinds of people coming on Wednesday morning. Do you even know? Yes, I do. Did I tell you this stuff? Well, yes, of course. I kind of know. Yeah, the West Guides Conservative Club has been meeting there for well over like a quarter of a century. Yes. And it's kind of a must stop for a lot of candidates. And I think that I know they have.

Zach Nunn's going. Zach Nunn's there and Steve Scalise is there. Chairman of the RNC, Joe Gritters is going to be there as well. He's originally from Florida. So maybe my wife will get out of bed early. I don't know. Doubt it. Doubt it. Doubt it. Anyway, he is also a member of the Florida State Senate, and so he's going to be there as well. So, yeah, we're very excited to come down at the Iron Machine Shet and, of course, get breakfast. Well, I'm going to be there tomorrow morning to get breakfast myself. And if you'd like to take this chance, you know, every year we have an 11-day world's greatest state fair. And a lot of our out-of-town fans manage to always make a pilgrimage to the I-O machine shed for a stop. So we want to welcome all of our out-of-town Iowa Machine Shed fans to come on in. that would be that would be good everybody needs to come in but uh but you know local people need to come in as well because i know it's the fair but we cannot forget our local restaurants you know they need our support it's very very important uh so we're going to be i mean i can tell you for sure twice during the fair we're going to be at the machine shed for sure so we're going to come on wednesday well i'm going to come on wednesday so there's also another connection so as much as we love the fair we love the machine shed and this year we combined The two, because part of, I love a theme, part of our fair theme this year, the clothing came from the machine shed. Yes, it did. Yes. Several of the shirts you'll see us wear at the fair celebrating all things Iowa and farming came from the machine shed. They did indeed. Oh, thank you. Yeah, you're welcome. Absolutely welcome. And then the second time we'll be at the shed is, well, we have our four-year-old grandson and his, would he be 20 months at that point? Yes. 20 months. Our 20-month grandson and our second oldest daughter. I'm saying that right, yeah, are coming to Iowa. So on the Friday, they arrive really early on the Friday morning, so we're going to take them to the fair, and then we'll take them home because they'll get fared out real quick. And then on the Saturday, we're not going to the fair at all. We're going to come to the machine share for breakfast brunch, and then from there we're going to go to Adventureland. Yeah. Yeah, we're going to have full Iowa experience. That's the day, and then on the Sunday we're taking them back to the fair. But they get to come to the machine shed because they have to see the chickens. Got to see the chickens. The other day I took a little three-year-old boy out there and...

He bent down what nose to nose with this chicken, and this chicken starts to cackle, and the little three-year-old starts to cackle back. I would pay good money to have that on video, but it was quick enough. You know, I think I know which chicken that was, the chicken that talks back. And then, of course, the dad tried to get him away from the chickens, and that kind of crazy. Is that the chicken you named after her, the one that talks back? Oh, no. I'm not going there. We were actually at the, so anytime we have friends come into the state coming to town. It's always the machine shed. So we were there the day before Ragbri. That's right, yeah. Because the U.S. Navy team. The U.S. Navy team was in town, and we are good friends with their captain, who is the former XO of the USS IOS submarine. So he and some friends and his two daughters, we all met there. And the minute I said machine shed, he said, oh, yes, because he's originally from Ames. Oh, that's a great story. Thank you. Yes. Yeah. I think I told you the story one time we were in Madrid in a restaurant and the guys next to us said, are you Americans? He said, yes. And they said, we look from Buenos Aires, but we were just in Iowa. And I said, why? And they said, for World Pork Expo. The one guy looks at me, he goes, I don't know if you've ever been to this, but we found the greatest restaurant called the Iowa Machine Shed. And I looked at him and I said, I started the machine shed. I said, no, really? I'm not kidding you. I'm not kidding you. He said, oh, you got to put one in Buenos Aires. That would be, that would certainly be interesting to say the least. Hmm. All right. Well, look, so you say obviously we have the fair for 11 days. Are you doing anything special to get people to understand, hey, the fair's great. So are we. Well, we're going to run some unique beef and pork entrees, special features all during the fair. chefs are kind of excited about it they get to do a little bit of a riff and that chefs love to do that so we'll have something unique and special every day of the fair uh to invite those people from particularly those friends of ours that aren't here all the time yes absolutely we love that uh okay um the you came in with a bag i love that you do this but you really don't have to you know if i invite you into the studio it doesn't mean hey bring food but you brought me a cinnamon roll Cinnamon roll. I know you love pot pies. I love pot pies. I think it's still pretty hot. Dinner plans just changed, Mrs. C. Thanks for not making us eat hot dogs tonight. It was going to be a hot dog night tonight. Okay, well, I guarantee you my chicken pot pie or cinnamon roll. Way better. Guarantee you're right. Absolutely. I guarantee you are absolutely right. So let me ask you, do you go to the fair anymore? Is that a place you seek out?

We do. When it's on, yeah? Yeah, we do. I'm kind of one of those people who like to go see the egg buildings and things a little bit more than some of the rides. But, yeah, no, you have to go on that. Yeah, we like, I'm looking forward. I'm looking forward to getting a four-year-old in front of the chick-laying department. Oh, yeah. I'm looking forward to him seeing that and freaking out. because he will freak out because you know eggs come from supermarkets if you live in a big city well that's uh so these are our beach bound florida grandkids yes they've never been around a dog they've never been around farm animals nope they've never actually been around where your food comes from so this is going to be a whole experience for them yes and uh you know we're blessed because we know some people so we'll manage to take them into the fridge with a butter cow oh butter cow You got to go out at Burger Shed. We bought a life-sized replica of the butter cow. Really? And it's painted butter. We found somebody that made a life-size butter cow. And we said, we'll order one, but it has to be painted butter-colored. And they're like, why? So we can get our picture made with buttercow without having to smell the buttercow? It's there. And it's quite the Instagram. Yeah, yeah. While eating burgers, we get to do this. Yeah. I'm excited about that as well. All right. Well, we'll come check that out. Mike Whelham. state of iowa it is the simon conway show coming up to 623 on this monday august the 10th you are very welcome in thank you very much for being there uh so uh on the text line simon make sure they uh the littles see the ducks in the baby animal building the ducklings are very cute they are they are adorable and i do think that that building will probably be um one of the most favorite stops and things that we do when the grandkids are here and i do want to uh we hold the record actually of the youngest animal ever in the crystal studio it was a lamb it was less than an hour old It just came running down and see us with it. So we even beat the big show. I think we also that year had the first animal in the Crystal Studio as well that year as well. So, yes, the baby lambs. I want to see them. I want to see the ducklings. I want to see them watch a chicken hatch. Because I think that will... They've just never been around them. So we're going to go to places you've never even been. Probably. So we're also going to go all the way down. We're going to see the rabbits. Did you know that there are massive rabbits at the fair? Yes, I did. I have seen those. Okay. Yes. I don't think they should see, maybe they shouldn't see a calf being born. Well, I'm sure we will. I'm, look, first of all, you can't really time that. No, I know. That happens in its own good timing. Absolutely. But I'm sure we'll use good judgment. And the bottom line is their mom has final say. Of course. But we will also be doing Little Hands on the Farm. I'm so excited. Yes. And Little Hands on the Farm also going to be in the Crystal Studio. Oh, even better. Yes. Not when they are there, but before then. So we're looking forward to that as well. What if we're taking a four-year-old and a 20-month-old to the Iowa State Fair for the very first time, what is the absolute must-dos that you think we must do with these kiddos? So I already have the Iowa State Fair app. Of course. I have the Iowa State Fair up. I have the Iowa State Fair up. I have already checked out all of the Kid Zone. activities of course the face painting and all the games and you know in the uh enchanted village and then there's the water you know the uh water squirts and all that so yes it's gonna be they still have to do the old mill yes the old mill this tradition and the giant slide but So Mudbug, his mother has been reading off the foods that we have at the Iowa State Fair. I know. And he thinks they are hilarious. Just the types of descriptions cracks him up. The four-year-old is just losing his mind over this stuff. He is. He's having hysterics. So anyway, we're very excited to take them. We've got to do some work before they get here, which is fine.

It's absolutely fine. We are fully committed to the Iowa State Fair, as you know. And by the way, we are also, as you know, having a blood drive on the second Thursday. The second Thursday is a blood drive day. That is the 20th. I've just realized that's the 20th, Mrs. C. Oh, she's on the phone. A lot happening on the 20th of August for the... Conway family, but that is also Blood Drive Day. So we'll see how she fits that in. I don't know. I will definitely be giving blood. I can tell you that. That's for sure. I've just realized Blood Drive Day is the 20th, Mrs. C. Oh my goodness. What else can be added to August 20th? I know. It's credible, right? It's a lot happening that day. I think that's like the fifth thing. So we've got a kid having a birthday. We've got a kid having a big meeting. We have a kid moving back to the dorm. It's the day before the grandkids get here. Now I have to do blood. Oh, my. Oh, and the Pony Express rider's just called to remind us to bring the grandkids down to get a ticket. Yes. And we'll get a ticket. Remember, I've been trying for a lot of times, a lot of years, to try and win a horse for a dollar with the Pony Express people. Are they great? You really can pay a dollar, get entered into a raffle, and win a horse. Now, you can meet the horse in advance, and the horse is always there. Mrs. C is not keen on me winning the horse? Mm-hmm. Yeah, Dave, what would you do if you want a horse, buddy? What would you do, my friend, if you want a horse for a dollar? um after i wake up from having passed out um i don't know that's a good question i mean uh you know having a cat is one thing making uh the arrangements for a horse that's all the other thing well the horse in the apartment that would be very tight there is that so but you really can the pony express riders have been doing this for years that's amazing they have they bring a horse and for a single dollar you can win it so it's literally a straight-up raffle that's amazing the horse is always there is in the um the horse is always in the uh which which uh places the horse Sorry, what? The horse that you can win for a rat, they always put... It's the Pony Express. No, but where do they keep him in advance that you can meet him? Oh, Avenue of breeds. Avenue of breeds. Yes. That's exactly where it is. Sorry, that was another suggestion. Someone's saying we need to make sure that we take mudbug on the sky glider so he can see the entire fare. Yes. And we both agreed we should probably leave P.B. and J. on the ground. Well, if P.B. and J is going up, he's going up in his mom's lap.

you know pbj's quite active here's um you know i'll stay on the ground with them yeah we'll see um april double check the schedule for the bunnies and birds they share a building and i always mess them up says this texter so there's that it's on my list maybe it's bird day and not bunny day but they're there Yes, they are there. So anyway, you can tell we're excited. I think we're more excited for this fair because the grands are coming than any fair prior. Yes. I have not experienced a fair with kids this age in 20 years. Yeah. Yeah. I know. See if I can still remember how to do it. Dang. 20 years. We're getting old, Mrs. C. But there you go. It is coming up to 6.30. Who are you calling old? No, not you. Okay. State of Iowa, it is, the Simon Conway show. You are very, very welcome in. It is 6.38 on this Monday, August the 10th. As far as I'm aware, this is the only state in the union, the only state in the union where the law determines when kids can go back to school. And kids cannot go back to school until after the Iowa State Fair, which begins on Thursday and then runs for 11 days. John Huber, the rest of the country seems to be going back to school this week. How are you? I'm doing pretty good. And yes, exactly. The rest of the country seems to be going back to school right about now. All right. Are you on a speakerphone, buddy? No, I'm not. Very echoing. Yeah, let me get out. Hang on. Okay, well, hang on. One time before, give me three seconds. There we go. Oh, that's much better. Yes, no echo at all. Okay, so there is a law, literally a state law, that says you can't go back to school until after the Iowa State Fair. And that is because a lot of the kids are involved in showing animals and stuff like that. So sometime after the 23rd of August, Iowa goes back to school. Meanwhile, other parents are kids going back to school right now. Is there a... John is our psychologist of choice, the second best psychologist in the country after... My daughter, obviously. And we love talking to him. She doesn't like being on the radio, which is why we talked to him. Well, and I was going to talk to you afterwards about her because I have a question for her. Okay. All right. Well, I'll make sure we pass that on. Meanwhile, what should parents be watching for? Is there a psychological aspect to going back to school? Well, what happens, you know, the psychological is the... of the unknown. They went through last year. Some kids haven't gone to school yet, of course, obviously. But after they've gone through a year, you know, their teacher changes, their classmates change, and there's this fear of the unknown, and that causes anxiety. So, you know, what you're going to see are doubts. excited but they're not excited and maybe they're crying a little bit here or there depending on how young they are and first and foremost what the parents need to do is remain calm and sound have that sound of of success already in their voice that this is going to be a great year and you know it's going to be amazing how much You're going to learn how much fun you're going to have, and you're going to meet new friends, and then your old friends are going to be there. And, of course, if they're not going to be, if they're moving to a new school, they're going to meet new friends. Don't tell them something that isn't true, because kids, especially the little ones, they predict their environment how mom and dad act. I mean, that's why when you see emergency responders.

And they get with little kids, man, they're calm and they're cool. Now, inside they're racing and they're – I mean, I've been there. I've done rescue work and stuff like that, and you have to be calm and collect, and that increases the odds of success right there. So as a parent, you know, hey, this is going to be great. If you have doubts, show them ahead of time. And, you know, we've had this conversation a couple of times before. Some of the best things you can do is – drive them by the school, even if you can't get inside, walk around the outside, show them the playground, look how much fun you're going to have, all that kind of stuff. And this is where it is from home. you know, give them a little... Are there some grades that are tougher than others? In my head, I'm thinking, you know, first is tough, sixth is tough, ninth is tough, maybe ninth the toughest. I think ninth is the toughest. I think, you know, all my years, you know, because I started out as a school psychologist and even in Miami-Dade County public schools, and I think the ninth grade is the hardest year for the kids, for the parents. It's kindergarten, first grade, and maybe second grade. That's when the parents lose it, and you can't lose it in front of the kids. So I know some of the principles that I know at that age grade levels, they make this, the parents come to the front door, and that's as far as they can go. They don't get to go in to the classroom even, and not until the second week of class. Because...

of panicking kids so that's all right so showing them the school that's important if you can get inside that's even better helping them find their classes if they have an orientation day go do that right all that kind of stuff you should probably take advantage of And probably the night before, go over their schedule with them, even if it's in one classroom, like a kindergarten or first grade class, and talk about, oh, you're going to learn, you know, this is what's on the agenda, you're going to learn alphabet, you're going to learn how to start reading, how to write your name, go through those types of things. So there's expectations for the student for the child. They just, I'm going to this black hole, what's going to happen there. So spend 15 to 30 minutes going over that. and talk about lunch because kids are, you know, lunch is important. And then, you know, the PE type stuff they have. When you get into high school time, that's a hard thing because there's so much socially involved with that. You know, you've got your hormones going. And if your kid is, you know, developing faster, they're embarrassed. They don't want to go and be there and be there. If they're not growing fast enough, it's the exact same thing. I'm going to be picked on because, you know, I'm flat-chested or whatever's going on in that situation. And unfortunately, across all of these grades, you know, kids can start becoming afraid of school. And it's called school phobia. And the last thing you want to do is give them a reason to stay home. Well, we'll stay home one more day. We'll come back tomorrow. ever do that if your child was sick and they said i'm afraid to go to the doctor you're still going to make them go to the doctor it's the same situation how new is how new is all this psychological aspect to going back to school because you know maybe i'm aging myself here i had none of this they were just like okay it's first day of school get out of here yeah well we had our fears all that kind of stuff and nobody cared you know we were not uh as soft and gentle a nation back then i you know of course but you know and your parents just took you there and you ran that was it you know well hey me they they you know they didn't take me there buddy i it was crossing london on three buses not school buses regular right red double-decker buses That's how I got to school. First day, and in England, there's two schools, right? There's the primary school, which you go to until you're 10, and maybe it's changed now, but when I went to school, and then you went to your senior school between 11 and 18. That was it, two schools. Right. And to get to the first one, I could walk from home. And to get to the second one, I literally had to cross London on three totally different brusses. They never even practiced the route with me. They just said, hey, isn't this weird? I remember two of the numbers. It's the number 52 and then the number 260. And then I can't remember the last one. But anyway. But also at that point, you already knew how to use mass transportation. Yeah, absolutely. And if you're on the upper east.

in Manhattan, your kid already does too by that time. So environment has a lot to do with it. But, you know, it goes back to, you know, we're trying to make all these kids feel at ease and all this kind of stuff. And it's kind of a misnomer. You know, it's like giving away trophies for it. Oh, don't get me starting. Do not get me started. Exactly. You know, it's like success comes from dealing with adversity. So basically, your concern might be well placed if you have a rising ninth grader, but the rest of it, they should just get on with it pretty much. Pretty much. And the kids are going to feed off of mom and dad. If they act like, hey, this is nothing new. You know, if you're worried about the transition, you've been letting them sleep until 10 o'clock in the morning. You know, you've got 11 days after the fair starts. You need to start getting them up earlier and earlier every day until their first day is so early that... It's like waiting. Okay, are we going to go yet? Come on. Yes, exactly. Well, they'll all be excited to go to the fair, that's for sure. Dr. John Huber, if people want to connect with you, where do they go? Well, it's coming up to 654 on this Iowa State Fair week. We're very, very excited here in the studio of my show. We can't wait, actually, for the Iowa State Fair to start. And we went to the Corn Dog kickoff this year, which we have not done before. That was good. We enjoyed that. That really set the seed. And yes, so we did that. And anyway, all those things are coming. What is the one thing you're looking forward to? Do you need a guide? Do you need like a written guide to what to do at the Iowa State Fair? Or do you have your go-to things and then you discover some other things along the way? So all those things are very, very important. Of course, the big important one for us is the 20th. That is the big blood drive. Remember, Iowa, like the rest of the country, is very low on blood. So we're having a blood drive right outside the Crystal Studio. The big bus is coming from LifeServe Blood Center, and Mrs. C and I are donating blood, and we really hope that you are donating blood as well and help us to help. Maybe you. You see, that's the thing, right? Every time you donate a pint of blood, you're actually potentially helping three irons. One pint, three irons. And one of them could be you. That's the point. You never know, right? Nobody plans to need blood. So when it happens, it's always, what, I need blood? And you just hope it's there on the shelf. So that's why we do what we do and push what we push. And as I say, you know, out of nowhere, suddenly Mrs. C needed a lot. I mean a lot of blood, which was better than the alternative because we thought she was going to need chemotherapy. Thankfully, she didn't need chemotherapy after the radiation, but she did need a lot of blood. So, and now she's in a position where she can give back. It's absolutely great. It's fantastic. So we're very pleased that we're able to do that. And, you know, my mom had cancer as well. And they wouldn't let me donate blood for the longest time. Why? Well, because I was in Europe however many years ago it was, and they had mad cow disease. And if you were stationed in Europe, in our military, they wouldn't let you give blood either. It was just so, so silly. And that's all gone away now, thankfully. They've decided I do not have mad cow's disease. They're right. So that's good. Just mad. Just mad. A little cray-cray. Eh, just a little. Anyway, they, um, so they've done that. And, uh, so we can give blood now. And also, Mrs. C didn't think she could give blood either. But then they decided that the particular type of cancer that she had, she too, was able to give blood.

So you just never know. Somebody I put a post up today. I went actually to my friends at Lifeserve in West Des Moines where we normally donate blood, made a very quick video while I was there. And somebody said, hey, I'm on blood thinners. I don't know if I can donate. And I'm like, man, you should just call them because they are the ones with the answers. I'm not a medical person. Just call them. It's not complicated. Just give them a call. Do you have the hiccups? And they'll tell you. You look like you're suffering. No, I don't have the hiccups. Nope, no hiccups here. Okay. Nope. So anyway, yes, so please come and help us out on the 20th where we have nothing else going on at all. Well, we have a lot going on. Yes, we do. But most importantly, I get to celebrate the 29th year. of my oldest child's birth biological child's birth he's being very weird about it isn't he because he's saying yeah i'm going to be 30 no you're not you're going to be 29 dude yeah i don't know why he's like in a hurry you know kids these days uh anyway yes he's going to be 29 we're excited for that we're excited for the grandkids coming and my daughter come in And moving day for the youngest one, back to college, all kinds of stuff going on.
