What we know about the incident that left a 71-year-old man dead and the charges against two men. Plus, police are revealing more information on an extreme case of child abuse in Maili, why authorities are praising the victim for his bravery. Where does Hawaii rank when it comes to international visitors? Howard's going to have the details coming up in your business news. All right, it's Monday, guys. Let's get at it. Check it with our first alert weather and traffic team. Good morning, guys. Hey, good morning. Right now, the world's a pretty calm and quiet. How's a day-looking guy, weather-wise? Well, for the next couple days, the weather's going to be relatively calm, but we are tracking a developing a cyclone. It could become a cyclone over the next couple days. Right now, that massive moisture is just about 1,000 miles to our east-s southeast, but it's approaching this way. Now, according to... the models, it's expected to come into the state sometime between Friday and Saturday. Now, big difference. One model said it's going to north. One model says it's going to go south. Now, big differences. If it goes to the north, like this model says, well, it's going to basically cut off the winds. But as it drops in on Saturday, the winds could be strong. We could get some heavy rainfall, and that could linger through Sunday. So the weekend is looking like it's going to be a little bit rough. Again, it's still too far at the end of the forecast to know with any certainty. what to expect, but safe to say, we should use these relatively calm conditions to prepare for what could be a couple of days of rough weather. Today, just a few windward and malcolm showers with lots of sunshine and those winds stepping up. It's going to be pretty breezy today at 15 to 20. Back to you, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Guy, right now, if you're heading into Chowm, from Wa'i, that's going to be about a 42-minute drive, no issues along Farrington Highway through Ma'ili, and then hopping on to the H-1 once you reach Makkah Kilo. Here's also a look at Eva Beach, Fort Weaver Road, looking very nice in-dhue. not yet seeing slowdowns as you're driving past a Safeway, Foodland, and Zippies in Eva. No major delays getting onto the H1-1 freeway, smooth sailing through Kunmia, Waipahu, and as you drive through the H1-H2 merge. Ferrington Highway is also moving along smoothly and efficiently. It's a 25-minute drive from Koppelay into town and about a half-hour commute out of Eva Beach. That's your first alert traffic on sunrise. Steve Grace, back to you. All right, thanks, Julani. On to Moe, two men have now been charged with murder following in a... that left a 71-year-old man dead. Police identified the victim as Alfred Cahili Hiva of Wahe. He and his 73-year-old sister were taking care of animals in Cahulu last Thursday when they encountered three people who confronted them over the use of bright headlights. Police say Keili Hiva used pepper spray before he and his sister drove away. The group allegedly followed them and then confronted them again. All right, police say that Eili Hiva was repeatedly struck in the head. All right, it's, uh, but, uh, yeah. All right, uh, we also have more to talk about. Holderlittle police have released more details into what they say is an extreme case of child abuse in Maili. And Lisa Burgos reports.

A 13-year-old boy and his two younger siblings are now in protective custody with child welfare services after the teen said he was repeatedly tortured by his own mother and stepfather. A warning, the details are disturbing. 35-year-old Jasmine Coros-Pelle and her partner, 36-year-old James Heffernan, were arrested Friday and charged with torture and kidnapping. Police say Coros Peles' son escaped their family home on St. John's Road and reported an extended period of physical abuse, neglect, food deprivation, and confinement. At the time he ran away, he stated that he had not eaten for approximately three days and had been wearing the same underwear for approximately one month. Investigators say on Thursday the child hid underneath the home of a neighbor who called police. I want to recognize the courage of the young victim. He made the decision to leave the residence, seek safety, and disclose what had happening to him for years. I also want to recognize the members of the community who contacted the police and took immediate action to ensure the safety of the victim and the other children in the home. HPD says officers recovered evidence from the boy's home and noted injuries and scarring that supported his abuse allegations dating back to 2024. Earlier this year, he said his mother held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him. Another time, he told police his mother struck him multiple times and stabbed him in the left thigh with a paring knife out of anger. In other cases, the boy was attacked by the family dogs and restrained to a chair with zip ties and left for hours. He was routinely locked inside his bedroom, deprived of food and denied access to the bathroom. And was forced to urinate from his bedroom window and defecate outside in his backyard. The boy said in one instance his stepfather punched him multiple times. He was also punished after his five-year-old sister tried to give him food. Children are also very, very resilient. And this child has displayed that by working in self-preservation to run away and to seek the help that he deemed he needed. Walker Rousey leads nonprofit KidsHurt 2 that helps children deal with trauma. He says the community's quick response helped save the boy's life. And that highlights the... bond between neighbors and families in Wai and on the Yonai coast and really the embodiment of the Aloha spirit out there. Rousey says this is a grim reminder of the many resources available for abused children, including Kids Hurt 2's peer youth hotline, parents and children together, and the 988 crisis line. Under a state law passed in 2025, torture is now a class a felony that carries a harsher punishment for those

who tortured children and vulnerable persons. The suspect's combined bail was set at $600,000. Anna Lisa Burgos, Hawaii News Now. All right, thank you, Annalisa. Over on Moloka, the police say a late-night crash killed two women over the weekend after a utility task vehicle overturned near Halava Valley Park. On Saturday, a 20-year-old woman was driving with five other passengers when she started veering on Kamah Fifth Highway. Officers say that she tried to overcorrect the UTV and lost control before hitting a large tree stump on the opposite shoulder. All six occupants were ejected from the vehicle. The driver and front passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Police do believe that alcohol and speed were factors in this deadly incident. Hi, 507, still no deal for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Morning, Howard. Good morning. Well, last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated a deal was near to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. A day later, President Trump offered the same assurance on a slightly later timetable, but neither ever happened. Iran never even spoke to U.S. negotiators except indirectly. Over the weekend, Iran offered its own update, indicating it is holding out for a return to the June ceasefire, apparently with new U.S. concessions. Oil prices rose over the weekend on the news, and Hormuz traffic fell 33%. The weekend was not without military action. Iran-backed Hootie rebels claimed responsibility for a fire at a refinery in Saudi Arabia. Aramco said the fire caused by a drone was put out on Sunday. Israel rejects a peace plan for Gaza. President Trump had proposed disarmament followed by Israeli withdrawal in several small stages. Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet Sunday that Israel would not pull back until Hamas disarmed altogether. And on Wall Street this morning, the Dow is giving back its gains. It's now down between 20 and 30 points. All right. Thanks, Howard. All right, it's 508 right now. Let's take a look ahead and what we can expect on the roads this week. Jonathan Misaki is here with your first alert traffic report.

Repairs from the storm damage have been completed. And finally, over to Hawaii Island, the single lane closure of Kanoi-Lewa Avenue in the vicinity of Ica Lane. This is Monday, August 10th through Friday, August. 14th, 6 to 11 p.m. nightly. This is for curb placements at the Kipi Mana intersection. So there you have it. That's our first alert traffic weekend edition. I'm John Tamasaki. Have a good one. All right, thanks, Jonathan. 509. Now, this past weekend marked the three-year anniversary of the Maui wildfires. We're going to take you to the special gathering in Lahaina as residents came together to support one another. And more work on Honolulu Israel means more traffic issues for you where the construction is moving, starting today. That's coming up next. How's it guy? All right, Steve, let's see what's happening here on Oahu. There were a few windward and mocha showers. There's not a lot. A nice clump of rain, though, heading into the Kualoa Ranch Ka Ava area. You can see it there. Most of that rain is of the lighter variety. And you can see how dry it is over on the leeward side. We'll have more with your forecast coming up after the break. You're watching Sunrise on Hawaii News Now.

Aloha Warrior fans, the news is out. UH games are coming home to K5. All the games, U.H shows, athlete profiles, and throwbacks to your favorites are all in one place. Hawaii News Now, celebrate the home team with us, and let's go Bose. Now, first alert weather with Guy Hug. There's a lot going on out in the ocean. There's a south swell this building and multiple swells coming in over the next several days. Now, at least through tomorrow, we could also get some minor coastal flooding because the extreme afternoon high tides coming in along with that south swell. So we could get minor flooding again, mainly for the south and southwest side. So there's that energy coming in today for south shores holding from tomorrow. But look at that, a bigger swell. This swell could be near advisory levels on Wednesday. Already big down in Tahiti where the WSL is holding their contest, and that's that same swell coming all the way from Tahiti. And then by Friday, there still should be some waves. And then on Friday, too, there's going to be an east swell. That's what we're expecting, coming from that developing cyclone. Now, for today, it's going to be good out there for South and for West Shores that this swell starts to build. Not a big swell just yet. For that, again, it's going to get bigger Wednesday, Thursday. And with those winds coming in at brisk speeds today, still going to be very choppy over on the east. east side and the UV index still extreme at 12. So load up on the sunblock. Gilani Guy right now, if you are heading out of the central west or leeward tides of Oahu, it's a smooth drive into town. Same goes for those heading out of east and windward Oahu. Now here's also a look at Kauai. No problems along the main highway as you're driving through Kalaheo, the tree tunnel, and into Lehu. It is going to be about a 34-minute drive from Waimea into town and out of Kappa about 20 minutes. Here's also a look at Maui. No major delays, whether you're driving along Hana Highway or... We're heading west into Lahaina-Longonoa-Pi-ilani Highway and on Hawaii Island, not yet seeing slowdowns whether you're driving in Hilo or Kona. That's your first alert traffic on sunrise. Steve Grace, back to you. All right. Thanks, Delani. Thanks. Guys up if you are driving in Kailua this week. The city says that work will resume today on the North Kala Hale Avenue Bridge. A daytime contraflow will be in effect today through Thursday 7.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. crews are replacing the concrete on the bridge. All right, if you drive on Dillian Boulevard, starting today, Hart's going to be implementing traffic adjustments. It comes as construction continues for the city center guideway and stations. That traffic pattern that was installed in March along Dillingham between Middle Street and Poohale Road is going to be extended further east. These traffic adjustments are going to continue through December of 2030.

Lahaina came together on Saturday to mark three years since the wildfire devastated the community and killed 102 people. For survivors and families, it was a day filled with grief, reflection and recognition of how far the town has come. Chelsea Davis takes us to one of the community gatherings there. The day started early for organizers of Cuhinia Maui, a gathering that has become an annual island tradition since the devastating 2023 fires. I'm at a different space right now at the three-year mark. In the beginning, it was a lot of... boots on the ground, just keeping busy, trying to survive and stay in housing. Second year, it was still a lot of the same, but still hopeful. As we've gone on to the third year, and things are literally like, you can see the progress of recovering. Some apartments are being built, more houses are being built. There's a little bit of more hope. and the forward movement of Lahaina Town. Fire survivor Loyle de Gama lost her home, business, and uncle in the infernal. Maui County Mayor Richard Bisson says it's a day to remember and honor the 102 lives lost on one of the most difficult days in the nation's history. We continue to feel the loss of our loved ones. We continue to feel that loss. We remember the past. We reflect on the past. but we also look at ways we can improve moving forward. So the lessons that we've learned is something that we want to incorporate as we continue to recover and rebuild. The day's events included free activities such as laymaking, Lomi Lomi and Acupuncture. Most of all, it's a day of healing. Most important is giving community members. who need this. And everyone is recovering at their own pace and grieving at their own pace. But what's important is that we provide an outlet so people are not alone. All we need is a hug. We don't even need words. We just need to feel loved and not forgotten. And I feel like that's the message we should kind of share for this three-year anniversary. 517. It's a new week on Sunrise on KGMB, K-H-N-L, and K-5. Still ahead, Hotel Business Improving Nationwide.

Aloha Warrior fans, the news is out. UH games are coming home to K5. All the games, UH shows, athlete profiles, and throwbacks to your favorites are all in one place. Hawaii News Now. Celebrate the home team with us and let's go Bose. Welcome back to Sunrise and Howard Doctors and more of your local biz. Smith's travel research now predicts significantly higher RevPAR growth for full year 2026 and next year as well. After strong business for the World Cup, the new forecast is for 2026 RevPAR, that's revenue per available room, up 4.4%. The previous prediction was only 2.8. So far this year, hotels are selling 11 million more room nights. Hawaii may not see so much growth there having been no World Cup events here. The yen is slipping again. Just one week after a rare joint intervention by Japan and the U.S., the yen is back to trading at 158 to the dollar. The Canadian dollar, meanwhile, is at 140, the Australian dollar at 142. Luxury Link reports Honolulu still ranks eighth highest U.S. destination for international visitors. It's 1.4 million foreign visitors, comprising 4% of all international visitors to the U.S. last year. 519. Now Guy Angelani at the first alert desk. Hey, thanks, Howard. Well, right now there are no major incidents or slowdowns, but we do have some severe... Weather potentially coming by the end of the week back? Potentially is the word. Potentially is the word because we're not really sure just yet. It's at the end of the forecast and that's when we have less certainty in what's going to happen. In fact, take a look at the European model for the wind. You can see the winds are going to be just a little bit brisk and breezy. But as we head towards Friday, the system is expected to develop into what could be a tropical depression or tropical storm. And then again, this is the European model, right? So on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, the winds could be. be quite strong at that time, and then by Monday, it should be exiting the state. And really it depends on if it goes to the north or to the south of us, because very different outcomes will happen depending upon where it goes. At this point, safe to say that you should get prepared for what could be a run of several days of strong winds with a fair bit of rainfall. Until then, things are going to be rather nice. We are expecting a few windwind and through Friday, and those winds, we're running pretty swift at 15 to 25 at times, and that means great air quality, comfortable humidity levels. But again, good time to get prepared, even though this might not happen, you should plan for severe weather because we are in that time of the year anyway. Ahmed al-Sharaa? Guy, here's a look at Oahu's North Shore, who's dealing, whether you're driving out of Halaiva or Waialua. It is going to be about a 25-minute drive from Wahuan to town, 24 minutes out of Mililani. No major delays as you are heading south along Kunya Road, Kameha Meja Highway or the H2. Not yet seeing slowdowns at the H1 H2 merge, but you can see traffic is slowly starting to build up out of Eva Beach as you're driving along Fort Weaver Road. This is between the Safeway and the food land. Very minor slowdowns getting onto the H1 at the Kuna Interchange. No major delays as you're driving through Waipahu along Farrington Highway, making your way past the high school and then hopping on to the H1 from there. That's your first alert traffic.
