Dangerous heat returning to Kansas

Wichita's number one talk. Good morning. It is 7 o'clock sharp here on this Thursday, August 6th. Currently in Wichita, we have 94% humidity, cloudy sky. It's 72 degrees here on this Thursday morning, August 6th. Reported cyclospiriasis cases are still on the rise in Kansas. Cases have been reported in 47 states, nine of which confirmed part of the multi-state outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Mexico, Kansas, one of those nine states. Kansas now has more than 600 reported cases. That's up another 33% from last week. A dozen cases reporting just here during the first few days of August, adding to the 543 cases from July. Sedgwick County has 80 cases. That's the third most in the state. The parasite-borne illness known primarily for causing explosive diarrhea. Texans are voicing concerns over the rapid growth of artificial intelligence data centers. As AI data centers spread across Texas, so does the political backlash. Supporters say the massive campuses promise billions in investment. Thousands of jobs and could help America stay ahead of China. But many Texans living near proposed projects worry they'll have to pay the price through higher electric costs and greater water demands. Now Governor Greg Abbott is responding, ordering state audits of proposed data centers before they connect to the Texas power grid. As concerns grow over whether an already strained electric grid can keep pace with the massive increase in demand. Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Inahosa says Greg Abbott acted too late. That was Fox's Brooke Taylor with the details from Dallas. Four men from the Detroit area are facing human trafficking and organized retail crime charges after police in Winfield found two teenage girls and several thousands of dollars worth of merchandise during a fraud investigation. This all happened on the afternoon last week on Friday after police in Winfield got information from a neighboring jurisdiction about possible fraudulent activity heading toward the city. Officers responded near the Dillans and Walmart stores and found a 15-year-old girl during the investigation. Police later learned that she'd been traveling with another juvenile from the Detroit area, along with several adult men. Information gathered during initial interviews, leading investigators to believe the group was still in Winfield. Officers identified a vehicle at a traffic stop, found a second teenage girl, and several thousand dollars worth of Walmart merchandise. Police arrested all four men, all between the ages of 20 and 25, all from the Detroit area. The organized retail crime charge alleging that the group stole somewhere between $25,000 and $100,000 worth of merchandise during a year-long period. The girls, age 15 and 17, are in protective custody. Authorities are coordinating their return to family members in Michigan. The four men still in custody in the Cali County Jail. There are four new oil rigs in Kansas, says Warren Martin from Kansas Strong.

Our oil fields here in Kansas are pretty well mapped out. What we're looking for is underneath the surface, you have strata, and the strata is just like it is up on top of the surface. You can't see it, but it has peaks and valleys and those types of things. So we've got oil fields that we have been pumping oil out of for years and years, some of them hundreds, over 100 years. And in those, what we're looking for with those new wells is we're trying to find those new traps, those peaks. The Kansas City Chief's home, once again, will be known simply as Arrowhead Stadium. The team announcing that the Government Employees Health Association is going to drop its name from the facility, so we revert to the classic name instead. The Chiefs and GEHA had signed a naming rights deal. Back in 2021, but G-E-H-A field at Arrowhead Stadium never caught on with fans, players, or coaches. Hard to believe. Yeah, shock. The Chiefs will continue playing there until their lease expires in 2013, and then they're going to move to a $3 billion domed stadium being built in Kansas. All Chiefs games, of course, may be heard live right here on 987 and 1330 KNSS. A United States Senate panel will vote today on holding Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt. A week after Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment refusing to answer questions at a hearing about the response to COVID-19, the Senate Homeland Security Committee will vote on a contempt resolution. The resolution authored by the panel's Republican Chairman Rand Paul accuses Anthony Fauci of obstructing a congressional investigation. Anthony Fauci was the recipient of a pardoned by former President Biden. Republican lawmakers argue that compels him to testify. Republicans accuse Anthony Fauci of covering up the origin. of the pandemic, Anthony Fauci denies that. If the committee approves a contempt resolution, Paul could refer Anthony Fauci to the Justice Department for possible prosecution. At the White House, Jared Halpern, Fox News. That might feel like closer to 100 degrees when you start to factor in some of this higher humidity. And then later on tonight, probably our best chance for rain out of the next week is later on. After midnight, some scattered showers and some thunderstorms will start to fester. right around Wichita into the east of Interstate 135. It doesn't look like anything severe tonight, but because we have the higher humidity, there's a possibility we could have at least a few quick heavy downpours, but I still don't think we're going to come out of this tonight with any real significant amounts of rain, perhaps maybe up to about a quarter or a third of an inch, if we're lucky. And then that morning rain on Friday is going to get out of here very quickly, and then we start to shift back into that heat dome that's going to be flexing its muscle going into the weekend. So we'll reach a high of 97 on Friday, and then it's back to triple-digit temperatures going into the weekend. Saturday, I think there's a pretty good possibility. We hit 100 degrees, and triple-digit weather is with us from Saturday. through at least Tuesday of next week, and then just maybe by the time we get to Wednesday, we'll be coming back down into the upper 90s, and much cooler weather should be on the way later next week. I'm sure after about four days of 100-degree weather, it won't get here soon enough, but I do think there's going to be a pretty substantial change in the weather pattern coming up. later next week that should help us to get out of the heat dome and perhaps maybe some more rain opportunities headed our way late in the week. But boy, we've certainly had some dry weather. And since the beginning of July... We are below normal on rainfall by about four inches. So when we get the new drought map here in the next couple of hours, I think we're going to be officially back in drought, considering just how dry things have been. 72 this morning in Wichita, we have a mostly cloudy sky. We're right smack in the middle of summer. Yeah, it's going to feel every bit like it, no doubt about it. I'm already thinking ahead to fall. I had some taste of it over the weekend, I guess, and now I'm kind of like, let's get to September. Amen to that.

There's a new study out that shows what the most dangerous is from Fox News, speaking of Fox News, the most dangerous animals from each state. And it's an interesting list. A lot of people have irrational fears of various animals like chupacabras and others are very rational fears, assuming it's possible that you could actually encounter those animals where they may live. So the website World Population Review put out a list of the most dangerous animals per state. For example, coyotes are the most dangerous animals in four states.

Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey. I wouldn't have thought New Jersey. I would have thought it would have been, you know, I don't know, mafia. Or Utah is coyotes. Moose are the most dangerous in Colorado, Maine. Colorado? Yes. New Hampshire and Vermont. White-tailed deer are the most, the number one most dangerous. I wouldn't have thought a deer, but apparently, in Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Ohio, and West Virginia. There are a lot of bears, obviously. The American black bear is the number one. This one I didn't get either. Number one most dangerous animal in Kentucky is the American black bear and Massachusetts. The black bear is the number one in Tennessee and Wisconsin. The grizzly bear in Idaho, Montana, and Washington State. And the North American black bear is the number one in Oregon. So, uh, you got to the, snakes, obviously lots of snakes have to be on some of these. Yes, cotton mouse snake in Mississippi. Eastern cotton head in Indiana, the eastern diamond back in Louisiana, the, uh, Massahuga in Michigan, and the Mojave rattlesnake in Nevada, obviously, the prairie rattlesnake in North Dakota, the Pygmy rattlesnake in Georgia. And here we go. You asked about Kansas. Yeah, we haven't heard it yet. You have not heard it yet. Now, last year, white-tailed deer was Kansas. White-tailed deer. Yes. And the reason they're so deadly is always car strikes. Yeah, they cause the traffic accidents. They cause fatal traffic accidents quite a bit. Well, it is not. The timber rattlesnake is the number one most dangerous animal in Kansas. timber rattlesnake and in Connecticut by the way would not have thought that but yes the according to this why would you not have thought that uh i just didn't think rattlesnakes were that popular or that common in kansas when they do that rattlesnake roundup and sharon springs every year they get thousands of snakes. I guess. Yeah, the timber rattlesnake is the number one in both Connecticut and Kansas. Yeah, mostly just east of here is where you're going to find timber rattlers. It's the eastern third of the state of Kansas. Here are the two most unusual, by the way. Mosquitoes, number one in New York City, which I would have thought rats. And Alaska. Anyone want to take a guess of the most dangerous animal in Alaska? Well, yeah, I would assume grizzly bear, but obviously that's not right. Grizzly bear or polar bear, maybe. In Alaska? The most dangerous animal in Alaska. I really don't know. Dogs. Dogs. Hmm, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Probably because of wild dogs would be my guess. But yeah. The FAA says it's investigating a loss of separation incident involving President Trump and the military helicopter carrying him yesterday, or on Tuesday, rather, Fox is Peter Ducey with more from the White House. From pretty much anywhere here on the 16-acre White House campus, you can see and hear planes taking off all day long and landing from Reagan Airport, which is three and a half miles due north of the White House grounds. When Marine 1 takes off, those planes are supposed to stop. Yesterday, when they were skids up at 2.33 p.m. from the ellipse. The planes didn't stop. The White House's comment is Marine 1 flights are piloted by some of the best aviators in the world, and at no point was the president in harm's way. The FAA has set new rules to maintain distance between aircraft around the Washington airport.

After dozens of people died when a commercial jet from Wichita to D.C. collided with an army helicopter mid-air a year and a half ago. Sedgwick County Commissioners received a quarterly report from the county's finances ending in June. The county's fiscal condition remains sound. However, there are plenty of pressures outside the county's control, such as global geopolitical instability, state legislative changes, market volatility, inflation, and fuel prices. The county's budget challenges include increasing costs versus increasing service expectations, along with reducing reliance on property tax and workforce competitiveness. Out in California, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in Los Angeles. Looking at a $30 minimum wage. Early Tuesday morning, community members calling for a $30 minimum wage gathered outside the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting, calling to the board to approve the ordinance, which has gathered more than 49,000 signatures to qualify for the November ballot. Hours later, another gathering brought local business owners together who say a $30 minimum wage would force them to raise prices on their goods and services, making consumer prices even higher. The owners of the African Caribbean food market say they're already struggling with the Trump administration's tariffs. high fuel costs. The proposed $30 minimum wage ordinance would impact all unincorporated parts of Alameda County and be phased in gradually with large businesses of 100 or more employees needing to reach $30 an hour by July 2030. Yesterday, I sat down with Senate President Ty Masterson after he received, or secured rather, the GOP nomination for governor. It was at the Kansas Republican Party's Unity Luncheon. It was the first time since all of the candidates had an opportunity to come together since the Republican primary on Tuesday, had a chance to sit down with the Senate president and talk about what it was like to secure the nomination. Well, we're sitting here with Senate President Ty Masterson, the now GOP nominee for governor. Ty, first off, congratulations on last night's victory. Well, thank you, John. I mean, it was truly humbling. I mean, because we expected it might even be a little tighter than that. We thought, oh, told my wife it might be a few hours into the night before it turns, and then here we called it within the hour. So we were just thrilled to death. I'm grateful to the Kansas people. You know, I think the biggest message that you gave last night was the one that I think we've been talking about from day one, which is unity. Yeah, because, I mean, the stakes couldn't be higher than what they are right now. What you've seen happen in the Democrat Party is they are, their nominees are becoming the fringe, right? Those on the far, far left. And so there couldn't be a starker difference between the two candidates right now. Talk a little bit about that. You've served with Senator Holshear, and I noticed you posted something on social media last night about your experience serving with Cindy Holshear, and some of her votes are certainly not going to resonate with even some Democrats might be surprised as some of her voting record. Yeah, I mean, the time I've spent, I mean, she was kind of a radical activist with the Democrat Party even before coming in and being elected to the Kansas Senate by one of the most liberal districts in our state. And so what you'll see is you'll see a push to put boys back in girls' sports, right? And you'll see men and women's bathrooms and stuff like that. You'll see, not to mention just higher taxes, bigger government. That's what, I mean, because that's what they think government has the answer for everything. And so that's what you'll see. Well, and, you know, she voted against property tax relief. She voted against income taxes. Even Laura Kelly referred to her as extreme, correct? Correct. I mean, so there's a gift right there because everybody knows, I mean, there's a great marketing campaign, you know, calling Laura the middle of the row, but everybody knew she wasn't really there. So here you have a liberal already liberal governor calling Cindy an extremist. So, I mean, that puts the icing on the cake, if you will.

Last night, you shared with the audience at the watch party that all of the other six candidates had reached out to talk to you. We're here today at a unity rally, and I think that's important that they're starting to unify. Are you feeling that amongst the constituency here this morning? Well, if you can't, I haven't had time to feel it yet, right? Just got up this morning, but yeah, but the major candidates all reached out, you know, Scott Schwab and Vicki Schmidt and Phil Sarnacki, they've all reached out. But, you know, this is, it's tough to do a unity thing the day after you just went through things, right? So, I mean, it's, to some degree, I think the sting needs to settle. And then I do, I do feel there is, that each of those stamps understand the stakes are high. So I'm very optimistic about our party unifying in this race. Well, we certainly wish you the best of luck. And, you know, it's like you said last night, you get a little bit of sleep. But then it's, you know, we can't really rest on our laurels. It's not like you can go take a cruise. You've got to turn around. You got 90 days to earn it now. It became abundantly obvious to me last night because it was like I knew, I said last night, we celebrate tonight, but the work starts tomorrow, the real work and the real battle. But what hit home last night is I got calls from six other governors. And so I realized, wait, this has got a national. Kansas is now the number one pick up nationally for the Republican Party. So there's going to be a lot of attention put on us in this state. My focus has been holy Kansas, right? This is all about Kansas, but there are. there are now outside interests looking at what we're doing. Have you heard from the president? That's the key. Just congratulations, right? We're winners. Well, you know, he picks him. He knows how to pick him, and he certainly picked him in this race. Congratulations, Ty, and now it's on to November. Thank you, John. The major averages ending mixed on Wednesday, though the Dow notched its 24th record close of the year. But the tech-heavy NASDAQ lagged as tech stocks took a break after Tuesday's rally. The NASDAQ was under pressure from SpaceX and AMD. Elon Musk's rocket company beating second quarter earnings targets, but its heavy AI spending is raising concerns in its stock plunge 13%. Advanced micro devices shares falling 7% after the chipmaker reported robust second quarter results. The Dow winners, Goldman Sachs, Gen and NVIDIA, the Dow decliners, Alphabet, Caterpillar, and Amazon. The Dow up 263 points, the NASDAQ lower by 22, S&P 500 down 13. Hillary Barski, Fox News. Now let's see what's going on in local business. It's time to check in with editor Kirk Seminoff from the Wichita Business Journal. Good morning, Kirk. Good morning, Ted. Walk-on Sports Bistro at New Market Square has closed after four years in business. The Louisiana-themed sports bar and restaurant at 2661 North Mays Road shut its doors on Wednesday. Three-point restaurant group officials did not provide a reason for the closure. The restaurant opened in August of 22 in the former Granite City Food and Brewery building, a 9,000-foot square foot space overlooking a pond near Target and Best Buy. The concept is part of the walk-on. chain, which is founded in Louisiana and is co-owned by former NFL quarterback Drew Breeze and founder Brandon Landry. The location here was operated by Wichita native Jamie Ream, CEO of Three Point Restaurant Group, who had previously discussed plans for additional walk-on's locations in Wichita and elsewhere in the region. With Integrate Technologies planned $1.8 billion semiconductor project in Bel Air seemingly dead and buried, it leaves roughly 350 acres near Rock Road and K-254 available for other development opportunities. Bel Air officials tell the Business Journal the site remains attractive because of a planned $50 million interchange project nearby industrial growth from companies such as Amazon and FedEx. and Bel Air's rapid population growth. While the semiconductor project may never materialize, city leaders say the land is well positioned for future industrial, commercial, or mixed-use development as growth continues to push north and east from Wichita. And Goodwill Industries of Kansas is bringing its first downtown Wichita store to the city center this fall. The nonprofit will open a 5,000 square foot retail location at 126 North St. Francis inside the renovated former American Legion building. becoming Goodwill's first urban format store. The downtown location will focus primarily on clothing and accessories with a smaller selection of houseware, shoes, and furniture. It will also accept donations on site. Goodwill leaders tell the business journal they've been searching for a downtown location for years and think the timing aligns with growing momentum downtown.

Wichita was going to be the semi-conductor capital of the North America. Oh, yeah. Billions and billions of all these computer chips. Wamp, want, wah, wah, nothing. Nothing. Yeah. That Chipsack funding never came, and Integra was acquired by Micross Technologies and New York firm. And, yeah, it just got, it went, we got ghosted, basically, didn't we? Yeah, we sure did, didn't it? All hat, no cattle. It happens, you know, lots of promises. No delivery. Yeah, and Kirk are outing to a sports bistro there on New Market Square. I guess that's not going to happen either. That place is closed. I'm disappointing. I had bigger hopes for that over four years, and I think it started off well, but I guess they had not been doing much business, although, again, they did not give a reason for the closure. But Raising Cains is under construction right down the street from us, so we are getting another chicken joint. Maybe they didn't serve enough chicken at Waukons. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe it's that Granite City building. Maybe it's cursed. That could be it, too. I don't know. All right. Thanks, Kirk.
