This is Gary and Shannon and you're listening to KFI AM 640, the Gary and Shannon Show on demand on the IHeart Radio app. As we mentioned with Fred Rogan there at the top of the hour, Dodgers have lost four in a row. They lost to the Cubs last night, 10 to 5. But Terrick Scoobel making his Dodgers debut tonight in Chicago. Back-to-back world champion Dodgers taken on the Cubs. First pitch just after five. Listen on AM 570 LA Sports. Stream on the IHeart Radio app live from the Galpin Ford Broadcast booth. President Trump will be in Los Angeles today. He will talk about what he describes as failed democratic leadership. He's going to be talking about his administration's accomplishments as well. The visit includes a trip to the Trump National Golf Club and RPV, and that is for an RNC fundraiser. That'll be this evening. Yeah, that's scheduled at 630. The White House... If the White House doesn't give minute by minute detailed descriptions of where the president's going to be during the day. But we do know he's got a couple of things on his agenda this morning. I think the last thing that he's got on planned in D.C. is some sort of a policy meeting at noon Washington time. So that was an hour ago. And then. swearing in ceremony this hour for the new director of national intelligence. But after that, he's expected to go to joint base Andrews and make his way out here to the west coast. I covered Obama when he was here. I covered George W. when he was here. I don't remember ever getting advanced notice of the president's remarks, including criticism. But that is what we get. What do you mean? The advance notice that Trump will be criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom. Oh, oh. Like what you can expect. Usually they'll tell you when a president visits, they'll tell the media what they can expect. They're going to talk about infrastructure. They're going to talk about environment. They're going to talk about rarely, ever, does it say the president will then go on to criticize the Democratic governor of the state of California. You just don't hear that a lot. Well, it is also, it is a fundraiser. So we know that this is going to be paid for by the Republican National Committee, unless there's some sort of official business that the president has.
while he's out here. But this is one of those events where the expectation is, yeah, he's going to absolutely torch Gavin Newsom. And it's... I don't know if he considers it a rally. It feels like every time he gets in front of the microphone, he believes it's a rally of some kind. Yes. Some sort of a political rally. Which I enjoy makes it much more entertaining than talking points and dry blah, blah, blah. You do that better than I do it. Which part? Blah, blah, blah. Gavin Newsom has not publicly commented on the president's planned trip as of today, but the governor has been obviously one of Trump's most outspoken critics, so you can expect that there will be some back and forth between these guys. I'm interested to see the response, actually, to see what they think is advantageous, because Gavin Newsom is obviously trying to box above your weight, box hit above your... I don't know. Insert analogy that makes sense. I feel like I know where you're going there. He has tried to put himself on the same level as the president because he is running for president in 2028 unofficially. So he's constantly trying to insert himself. And of course he's going to love that Trump takes aim at him because it puts him on that level playing field in his mind. Yeah. I'll be interested to see how Gavin Newsom's people counter this trip to California. Do they have an event today? What is the social media reaction? It'll be interesting because they're going to try and probably. make it seem like it is a tit-for-tat situation? The president will not be staying in California tonight. He, after this event down at the Trump National Golf Club, he will be headed to Vegas. There's an event there tomorrow afternoon. Now, that still means we're going to see some massive traffic impacts, as we have seen any time a president comes to L.A. L.A.X. Century Boulevard, a Sepulveda Boulevard, the 405 freeway in the South Bay area. PCH, Rancho Palace Verdez Drive. They're all expected to be severely impacted by, and potentially even closed in some of those areas as the president makes his way through. Again, we don't know the exact timing of it. The last thing on the president's schedule in D.C. is at 1 o'clock D.C. time. So right about now. And then there is. The current schedule for his speech at Trump National Golf Club is at 6.30 hour time. So I don't know if he'll be here much before that. He doesn't have to sit in traffic. So he could get here at six and be at his golf course easily by 630 without problem. You and I don't have the...
You and I don't have the benefit of having a couple of helicopters waiting for us to pick us up when we go to LAX. No, no. I mean, I've never, you may have. I've never had that. My grandfather, San Francisco police officer, was, well, he died late in life. He was like 98, 99. Extra innings there. Many extra innings. But. For his funeral, we had a police escort because he was SFPD. Oh, that's cool. And it was very cool, like, being in the funeral car or being in our car and having, like, the police lead us down. You did mention that you've covered presidential visits to L.A. Did you ever get to ride in the motorcade? No. That was one of my first, I mean, literally within the first few weeks of having worked at KFI, George W. Bush flew into L.A.X. I was in the motorcade, not in his limo or anything, way in the back. Right. Behind all the important people. Yeah, but still. But still, flying down the 110 freeway at about 90 miles an hour. Off-duty Glendale police officer was our driver in like a 15-person van. That was pretty amazing. Yeah. That was really cool. Love it. I get a taste of that with the Chargers, too. Chargers have a police escort. That's fun. Okay, when we come back, a major union switches support from Karen Bass to Nithya Raman. We also have the latest odds when it comes to who will be the next mayor of Los Angeles. Gary and Shannon will continue. Also a chance at $1,000 coming up. You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI AM 640. What are we going to do with this $1,000 that's just sitting here? I know. Now is your chance to win $1,000. Just enter this nationwide keyword on our website. Green. That's G-R-E-E-N. Enter it now at K-F-I-A-M-640.com slash cash. K-F-I. Get it, green, G-R-E-N. That is the word that goes on the website. And an hour from now, we're going to give you yet another chance to win a thousand bucks. So stick around. Fighting above your weight class. Thank you. That's what somebody. I could not. You got, you said, I think you said every one of those words. I said the things. I just couldn't put it together. That's okay. Guys, this is what happens. All right? It's going to happen to all of us. I don't know if it's going to happen all of us. You don't know if it's going to happen to all of us? It's probably going to happen. Hi, I'm Shannon, and it's almost like riding with the president because I get to ride with the Chargers. I brought up my dead grandfather first, sir, was much cooler at the funeral. Yeah, Gary Shannon. I've been Kevin Costner story, too. So I was working for a bounce house company here in Santa Barbara, delivering bounce houses for kids' birthday parties. Long story short, delivered a bounce house to his compound in his private beach here in Carpenteria, multi, multi-million dollar property, and came back and picked it up, and he actually...
talked to us for, I don't know, like an hour, just down to earth, nice sky back. Oh, good. That's a good story. I think I've heard more down-to-earth Kevin Costner stories than I have, hey, don't poop in my toilet stories. I was walking by a kid's birthday party in a bounce house over the weekend and I thought, gosh, that looks fun. Now, do they do adult bounce houses? Why do you look at me like that? Well, what do you mean? What would make it an adult bounce house? Like, okay, I would assume that there's like a weight height limit, right? There's not. No. So we could get a bounce house and put it in your cul-de-sac and have a show party. Yeah, and I think. What might happen is they would restrict the number of bodies in there. Right. But I don't think there's any height or weight limit. You've bounced around in one. I have. Yeah. What? I mean, you haven't? I'm saying that like, no. Inquiry. Have you not? No, I've never. How could you not? What do you mean? How could I not? I guess you didn't have kids. I didn't have kids around. I'm sure you have. I would like to bounce around. One of the great adventures of being a dad is being able to knock kids over in a bounce house. Yeah, that's cruel. Throw them into the netting onto the side. They love it. They... Love it. So I too would like to, yes, I agree with that. Yes. So you guys, do you think we should get a bounce house and put it in Gary's cul-de-sac and have a show party? Yes. Yes. Elmer says yes. Matt. Definitely. Okay. Matt's in. Shannon needs her bounce-bounce. I do need my bounce-bounce. Okay. Gary. You have to sign off on this. It's at your house. You can call my wife. You don't get a saying anything around there? I just want to clarify that. Okay, I'm texting her right now. Okay, great. How do I even ask for this? Just like you did. She might be listening. She may already be texting you a yes or a no. And a bounce house and put it in your yard. Cold a sack. Cold a sack. It's a tough one to spell. It's so silly. It looks French, doesn't it? Stupid French people. It is French. I sent the query, you guys. Awesome. I'm excited to hear what she says. Me too. The group Western States Carpenters represents about 60,000 carpenters, huge union, has announced that it's not going to endorse Karen Bass. The union did endorse Karen Bass in 2022 when she ran against Rick Caruso. But they are now backing council member Nifia Rahman. They did a press conference. I got a response. Of course you did. Not only did she say yes. She said, hell yes.
Oh, my God. Now what? Now what are you texting? I just texted. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Okay. Duh. Nithya Raman said, quote, I want to see cranes rising all over the city of Los Angeles. I want to see well-paid union workers breaking ground on tens of thousands of new homes near transit and jobs. Meanwhile, Karen Bass was in Korea Town yesterday, ribbon-cutting ceremony to talk about a new 19-unit affordable housing project. So we could do it the weekend, the first weekend of September because football doesn't start really until the regular season until the next week. What kind of theme? Is there certain themes for bounce houses? You're getting a little crazy. Or is it just like whatever bounce house? Take what they give us. Okay, take what they give us? They have different shapes. They have different shapes. I was telling Matt, we do need a more fortified bounce house. I want like a castle. Elmer, what are you talking about more fortified? Children are small and pointy. We are not. We are not. Yeah, but we're heavier. Yeah, but that's not going to. Those things are made out of ridiculous materials. I think that guy on the talkback that put the bounce house at Kevin Costner's beach property might have an idea of which kind of bounce house we should rent for us, adults. Sir, if you're listening, let us know. He's needed. If you're a bounce house expert, please. Fortified. We're going to need a fortified bounce house. I want one that looks like a castle. I want a pony. Well, you could play with your wand that you got it frozen. No, it's too sharp. You could not do that in the bounce house. Somebody would get hurt. Okay. Oh my God. Just got another wave of the, this is a mental hospital. And my wife is in on it now too. She is. That hurts a little bit. The Wildlife Crossing. A pet project, I'm using that term intentionally, that started when our show started. Yeah, it became like our thing. Close to completion on this thing. Although I don't understand it. All the images I've seen of it. There's a giant cliff on one side. I've driven back and forth. Underneath it? I never see any wildlife. And I never see any traffic. You're underneath it. I know, but it's fun to look. You think a mountain line is going to be hanging over there. Thanks for the wildlife crossing. You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI AM 640. So apparently this is a thing now. This is a thing. People want to hang out and they want to bounce with us. I had a bounce house at my 40th birthday party.
ex-boyfriend got it for me. Uh-oh. And we had a bunch of drunk adults bouncing in the house. There were no kids at the party. Yeah. That's the way to do it. Probably some kids after the party, though, if you know. Guys, this is Kimberly from Colorado, and the bounce house is not only a good idea, but we need to have the next news and bruise in a bounce house outside Gary's home. I'd come out for that. Oh, thanks. Love you. Yeah, we can't do that. Okay, so we got an email here from Carol. Shannon, don't rent the bounce house for Gary's house, rent it for the building so all of us can use it. I'll give you a dollar for 10 minutes. Carol from the third floor. Carol from the third floor. What? The woman that you ran into in the elevator the other day? Who works for the Simpsons? Yeah, when you were like, what goes on down there? Okay. The fact that you think I talk like that. Oh, touche. Now it comes out. Okay. Let's hear your impression of me. And scene. Go for it. I don't, I'm not an actor. See? I'm not an actor like you are. I'm not a Thespian. But there was a time in college. So wait, Carol from the third four listens to the show. That makes me really happy. Now, I would say yes, I'm amenable to that, Carol. However, have you met the building management? It's like Nazi Germany. Yeah. We tried to take pictures of Gary and I outside and we got pulled over by the management. They were like, what are you doing? This is our building. You can't take pictures here. We were like, we've worked here for 20 years, sir. And he said, I don't care. So I don't think that they would be cool with us bringing a bounce house to the building. They would not. They definitely would not. You could put it in the loading dock right down there, but nope. I'm an old bounce house expert. Yeah, you are. Started bouncing when I was 76 years old. Oh, good. And stopped when I was 79 years old with my grandchild. What? What we do is we wait until all the children are finished and they get all tired. And then it's my job to get all the adults inside the balance house. Great time. Yeah. That guy sounds like fun. Can we invite him? Yes. Although he did say he stopped at 79. The Wallace Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is almost done. But the city of Calabasas had to close the northbound 101 on ramp at Liberty Canyon. It will be closed Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember, this wildlife crossing is meant to restore ecosystems that had been fractured and disrupted and to reconnect wildlife that had been cut off by roads and in this case cut off by the 101 freeway. Originally supposed to cost $92 million and be finished last year. It's also costing about $77 million as well. National Wildlife Federation launched the Save the Cougars campaign just before we started this show because they were inspired by. Do you remember the mountain lion that inspired it all? P22. Garn right, it was. Boom. P22 died a couple of years ago, but was famous.
And somehow was able to make it across the 101 freeway and the 405 freeway without a wildlife crossing. And that thing lived in Griffith Park. I mean, that covered some ground. Yeah. Yeah. They have a movie made after him. I think there's a restaurant. It's a whole thing. There's a whole P-22 culture that was spawned. 26 million pounds of concrete used to support up to four feet of soil, thousands of native plants that have been there. It's a beautiful, have you seen it? Well, see, here's what I've seen. Yes, I've seen images of it. It's really pretty. I've seen helicopter TV's helicopter. Annaberg Crossing, which should say Gary and Shannon Show crossing. I've not, I don't think I've driven, well, I guess I have, but I didn't notice it. It would have been a year ago or so that I drove out there. But. I've seen the images from above, and I've got to be honest with you, it leaves a little to be desired. In terms of what? Are you a mountain lion? Did you develop more legs overnight? What? I don't know. Good one. But what do you care? I guess it's the south end of it looks like it melds into the wildland there. It just happens. That's where it is. But on, I guess it's on the north side of it, it's just an abrupt cliff. There's no connection to wildland. And they're talking about it being a bridge. It's not done. I mean, I know obviously it's not done, but it feels like they're leaving a giant. Well, maybe they just haven't gotten to that part yet. I guess. Also, does the wildlife care, or is this your aesthetic sensibilities that's offending? Well, the wildlife would care if there's a 40-foot cliff it's going to drop off. I'm not saying it's aesthetically unpleasing to the eye. I'm saying it's not done. I haven't seen the cliff. It looks like a pretty good crossing to me. Maybe I saw the unfinished version of it. Maybe. Maybe. Because why would they have it opened if it was just one side of it was open? It's not open. That's the thing. That's what they're still working on. So that's why I haven't seen the mountain lion yet when I drive by. It's not hanging over the railing. Hey, good morning, Gary and Shannon. Hey. Hey, was this ever discussed about Kevin Costner about him and Kyle Ripkin's wife? And the day that Cal Ripton came back for practice early to find Mr. Costner there. I think that that's a movie called Bull Durham. No. Well, they also know. First of all, Cal Ripkin didn't, quote, come home from practice.
Cal Ripkin was playing for the Orioles, of course. He was in the midst of his breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played. And in 1997, there was a power outage at the, at Camden Yards. And they actually had to postpone the game against the Mariners. I don't remember midsummer 97, something like that. But the rumor was that Cal Ripkin had, again, quotes, gone home and found Kevin Costner there that they get in a fight and rather than scratch. Cal Ripkin from his start that night. They pulled the plug apparently on several neighborhoods around Camden Yards. Because he had a consecutive game street. Right. And then declared that the game was postponed because of a power out of it. It's all a fallacy. It's urban legend. Both have denied it. Never happened. In fact, Cal and Kelly Ripkin stayed together for another two decades. Not to mention that. Cal Ripkin says that Bull Durham is his favorite baseball movie of all time. Now, why would he say that if Kevin Costa is banging around with him? Right. Yeah. I mean, come on. That can't be true. All right. Coming up next. Get ready for 90s night, baby. Oh. Is this for old people? Yes. Okay. Because the kids aren't drinking anymore. They don't want to go to bars. I know. They don't. So 90s night is the new thing. We'll explain why bars don't care about Gen Z anymore. They're like, you don't want us. Well, we don't want you either. You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI AM 640. Hey, Gary and Shannon. It's Herman from Catalina Island. Hi, Herman. What you guys need for that bounce house is run a bounce house, rent a keg, have some cameras, and call it motherfucking bounce house with Gary and Shannon. Oh, yeah. Have a good day.
Good times. What the hell are we doing? We could stream it. Oh, yeah? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You want to bet? I'm sorry. I forgot that when you bounce, you like to be in private. Mother fucking bounce out with Gary and Shannon. That's what it would be called. Of course it would. Dirk. We'll do True Crime Tuesday coming up at the bottom of next hour. We found a story out of Houston. that is either going to be the next great Netflix documentary or a Knock It Out of the Park podcast that everybody's going to talk about. There's so many twists and turns in that story about a transgender funeral home director. And it feels like it combines about six other stories that we've heard about. It's something for everybody. There's a little bit of something in it for everyone. Drinking among younger Americans hit historic lows a couple years ago. Those born, roughly, between 1965 and 1980, have largely maintained their drinking habits. You're welcome. But if you go, look between 19 and 65 years old, this University of Michigan study looked at substance use. People between 19 and 65. They want a party. They do it on their own terms. And watering holes, bars, clubs, nightclubs, they're programming their calendars accordingly with nostalgia theme nights and parties that end like at 845 so we can all get to bed at a reasonable hour. Many Gen Xers say they consider themselves a forgotten generation. I don't feel, I don't know. Stop looking at me. Nobody needs to. You don't have to be paid attention to all the time, Gen X people. I'm sorry, go ahead. Gen X is resilient. They're cynical, usually a latchkey kid. We were raised on MTV. We were raised with limited parental supervision. My wife says all the time, where were my parents? Yeah. Like when we were younger, we have these great memories, but I mean, and part of it was, for example, playing out in the street with buddies. You know, you'd play, or you'd go ride bikes for miles and miles at a time, at least what it felt like. And they didn't know where we were. No. Or what we were doing. And it was fine. It was fine. Come home when the street lights come on. Nobody accuses these people of bad parenting or didn't. David Juerrigan is professor at Boston University School of Public Health. He says the alcohol industry marketed heavily to young people in the 80s and 90s. Wine coolers, those sugary training wheels to draw in Gen Xers. Wine coolers were so delicious. They really were just candy with bubbles. They were delicious.
In 1991, there was a 60 minutes segment. Now, 60 minutes in the late 90s, or early 90s, late 80s. Everyone watched 60 Minutes. It was on right after football and it was always on. It was like it was just on. Yeah. And they aired a segment exploring the French paradox, suggesting the reason that why French people have lower rates of heart disease despite having less healthy lifestyles overall is because they drink so much wine. So suddenly the wine industry took off. Supermarket sales of popular red wines went up 45% weak. 45% in the weeks following the broadcast. And more and more, the wine industry paid for these studies to tell you it's good for you, which it is in... in moderation, I guess you could say. But just like everything is good. You could do a study about raspberries being good for you. I mean, but they just put in a lot of money. The industry put a lot of money in this so that you were bombarded with the messaging that wine was good for you. Anyway, Gen Z and younger millennials are now entering adulthood, and all of the evidence suggests otherwise from that 60-minute segment. All the emphasis these days is on alcohol's negative impacts on the body. So that's what they're growing up with. We grew up with Do It Like the French. They have wine at lunch. There are anecdotal stories of bars and clubs that will program specifically Gen X versus Gen Z. events, whatever that would be, 90s 8, 90s night versus, you know, uh, the 2000s or aughts or whatever you call it. There's a one club called magic bag. They say their Gen X friendly events, like a 90s night, would generate about 25% more in alcohol sales than anything they do targeted towards Gen Z. Oh, I bet. Whether it's, you know, like a 90s cover band or something like that, it's going to generate more than it would for the younger group that comes through there. They also played host to something called an early bird club, a dance party for ladies who have to do S in the morning. And they said that the party would take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Perfect. That's like my, that's my kind of party. When you're 20.
You don't go out until it's 10. Right. I always liked going out and dancing, but I never liked staying out until 2 in the morning. Like I liked, I would always be the one that got to the club early. Like my friends would be, no, we're going to start getting ready at 10 kind of a thing. And it's like, oh, man. Yeah, I can, I think back to those days where. If you knew what last call sounded like. Now when you think about it, it almost causes a low, dull pain. Yes. And desperation. To remember the bartender at LaSalle's reaching up and ringing the bell. Because at LaSalle's, it was always a little after two. Yeah. And you could still, as soon as they rang the bell, you could order one thing. Oh my goodness. And it would always be like. Two or three, you would order a pitcher apiece or something like that. Oh my goodness. I smell it now. And then you'd have the hot dog out on the street. Yes, you would. I was just going to say, oh, got to set some time up for the hot dog. How much are those hot dogs? They're a dollar. Three more dogs. Could you imagine one night like that and what it would do to your system right now? I feel sick. I mean, you'd probably be able to handle it. You have a dumpster tummy. We'll talk trending when we come back to Gary and Shannon. This is KFI. You've been listening to the Gary and Shannon Show. You can always hear us live on KFI AM 6.49 a.m. to noon every Monday through Friday and any time on demand on the IHeart Radio app.
