The Ryan Gorman Show podcast, presented by Farah and Farah, accident attorneys, Tampa. Good morning, Natalie. Good morning. Well, right off the top, let's talk about Amendment 3. I know you've been talking about it this morning. And it's on a lot of people's minds because the battle lines are officially being drawn. And the resistance is really coming from an unexpected place. We're talking about the state's fraternal order of police. Firefighters, county sheriffs, including Polk counties, Grady Judd, who they're all urging us to vote no for Amendment 3. Sheriff Judd says in its current form, this proposal will completely devastate the ability of cities and counties to protect their citizens. And Florida Sheriff's Association President Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods says. What is this truly going to cost? If I'm cutting taxes, how am I going to get there and keep my community safe? And here is the deal. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Galtieri. He didn't allude. He straight upset it, pointing out that 85% of public safety budgets. go toward salaries. Tallahassee has zero plans in place to fund local first responders if these revenues disappear. So opponents say taking away this revenue stream with no plan to replace it puts the strain directly back onto the police, the fire, the first responders, making public safety the ultimate collateral damage. So again, they're saying no to three. So there are a couple of... issues in play here. And I want to get to one of them. And you're seeing this back and forth in the race for governor on the Republican side. You've got Lieutenant Governor J. Susan Collins. He admitted that Amendment 3's reduction in revenue could put...
law enforcement officers and firefighters at risk, but he's still telling people to vote for the amendment saying that if voters approve the measure, then you can work on in the implementation process, something that could help address that situation. Ron DeSantis, he's actually distanced himself from the amendment. because his idea of having a trust fund in place for especially at-risk counties and municipalities where they would see severe cuts because most of their revenue comes from property taxes because that trust fund wasn't put into the amendment. In the language. Yeah, he's kind of backed off of supporting it. You've got Byron Donalds's running for governor. He wants Florida to use some kind of predictable funding formula as opposed to grants controlled by the governor because there's a concern that if you've got these grants, then you're going to have counties and cities having to go to state lawmakers and kind of sing for their supper every year. And that's not going to be popular with a lot of these counties. And you've got about 30 of them that are more fiscally constrained. So. An amendment's been put on the ballot that radically alters how this state operates. And there doesn't seem to be any agreement in how to handle some of the... unintended consequences of this amendment and because of that you've got the florida sheriffs association you've got you've got uh law enforcement officials you've got firefighters first they're all coming out and saying you can't vote for this i mean what a freaking mess over something that had been talked about for well over a year cutting property taxes in the state this is how uh it gets done But here's the price you have to pay for it. Yeah. And it's just, it seems like a giant mess heading into November and an unforced error because there was plenty of time for the legislature and the governor to come up with a plan that they could all agree on that address some of these kinds of concerns and was better suited for property tax reform that doesn't have some of the unintended consequences that this particular proposal will have. What I want to know from... All of you listening. You've got sheriffs. You've got Sheriff Grady Judd, Paul County, conservative sheriff. You've got the Florida Fire Chiefs Association, Fraternal Order of Police. You've got all these different organizations tied to public safety coming out and saying don't vote yes on Amendment 3.
