Chiefs focus on defense in NFL Draft's 1st round

Storms moving across South Central Kansas late yesterday afternoon into the early evening, dropping hail up to softball size and producing multiple weak land spouts. Those weak tornadoes form from the ground up. Not as dangerous because of the disorganized circulations at surface gets pulled upward. The first land spout was reported before 7 o'clock last evening about five miles from Newton in Harvey County. And then within a half hour, sirens sounded, and a tornado warning was issued for northern portions of Sedgwick County where the weather formations were occurring. And we did have Operation Stormwatch in effect right here last night on 98, 7 and 1330, KNS. Land-spout tornadoes were also reported during the next 40 minutes, six miles from Valley Center here in Sedgwick County, in the Whitewater area in Harvey and Butler counties, and near Burns in Marion County. U.S. Senator from Kansas, Dr. Roger Marshall, says a vast majority of money spent on prescription drugs is for chronic diseases. I think we have to acknowledge that prescription drugs, to some extent, to a large extent, keep people out of emergency rooms, out of hospitals. So there is value in those drugs. If you want me to save Medicare, I need an Alzheimer's drug to start with. So I think that we have responsibilities as... You know, people across America rather than expecting Congress to fix this all the time. Senator Marshall making remarks at a Senate Finance Committee hearing. It was 20 years ago on this morning, one of the most destructive hail storms in Wichita history. It was on April 24th, 2006. An early morning severe thunderstorm pounded Sedgwick County with larger than baseball-sized hail during a 20-minute period. It started in Goddard at about 6.30 in the morning, and then it came into the western and central parts of Wichita during the 7 o'clock hour and into the downtown area. Another area of golf ball-sized hail fell east of the canal route near the highway K-96 corridor on the northeast side of town. Widespread damage to cars, homes, and businesses. Some golf courses had to close for the day. Botanica Gardens sustained damage. That hail storm caused $70 million in damages. That was 20 years ago on this morning.

More than 8,500 Kansans will be getting a notice from the Kansas Department of Labor. The billing notice is for those who received unemployment insurance benefits overpayments. Overpayments happen when a person receives more unemployment benefits than they are eligible for. Recipients receiving these notices were previously notified about the overpayment through a manual process. The State Department of Labor said the overpayments totaled more than $67 million between January 2019 and January 2026. Those who receive an overpayment notice have several options to resolve the issue. One, paying the balance in full. Two, establishing a repayment plan, or three, requesting a waiver if eligible. The Kansas Department of Labor said it has updated its website and staff are prepared to assist claimants in understanding their options and navigating the process. Phil Hildebrand, KNSSS News. A new vaccine is showing promise combating one of the deadliest types of cancers. Data from a Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center trial left doctors working in pancreatic cancer research and funding with new hope. That includes Dr. Anna Birkenblit with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. She explains to Fox 10 how the trial worked using an MRNA vaccine administered to patients whose cancer was caught early enough for them to undergo surgery. The vaccine. was a bespoke vaccine. So it was made from the patient's own tumor and then given back to the patient. Dr. Birkenblit says more data is needed from an efficacy and safety perspective. But she says a phase two clinical trial is already in the works. And that's Fox 10 Phoenix, Nicole Krasheen with those details. a new fox news poll shows how voters feel about the ongoing military operation in iran support has increased for the u s action in iran to forty five per cent up from forty two per cent a month ago still more than half who responded opposed the war Even with that, almost 60% of respondents rated the military's performance from good to excellent. 40% of voters say President Trump has been too tough on Iran, while 28% say he hasn't been tough enough. 30% say the fight that's ongoing is about right. Let's see what you need to know about alarm clocks. Alarm clocks are designed to wake you up at a time of your choosing, but one of the earliest versions didn't do that. In 1787, an American inventor named Levi Hutchins built a mechanical alarm clock. There was just one catch. It could only ring at a single time. 4 o'clock in the morning. That wasn't a flaw. It was by design. Hutchins built the clock specifically to wake himself up for work. It wasn't something he's sold just a one-of-a-kind device for his own routine. It would take another 60 years before someone changed that. In 1847, French inventor Antoine Redier patented one of the first adjustable alarm clocks, finally allowing people to choose when they wanted to wake up. But the original idea was much simpler. What's going on with the Trump Gold Card Visa program? Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says only one person has been approved for the gold car visa under a program granting U.S. residency to non-citizens for a $1 million fee. This is a new program, and they've just set it up. and they wanted to make sure they did it perfectly. The Trump Gold Card Program was launched in December. It allows applicants to pay $15,000 to the Department of Homeland Security for speedy processing. After their background check, an applicant must then make a $1 million contribution to get the visa, which allows them to live and work in the U.S. similar to a green card. Howard Lutnick told a congressional hearing there are hundreds of other applicants going through the process. Lisa Lacerra, Fox News. Hey, you know. Million bucks. Hey. All right, we had round one of the National Football League draft last night in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the 91st NFL draft. The Kansas City Chiefs heading into the night with two first round draft picks. Went defense. Unusual that you would get two in the first round. That's the way to shook out for the Chiefs. And the first time in, what, I think, 10? or nine years that they had a top 10 pick. The last time they had that, they took a guy named Patrick Mahomes. They did. That's right. That's right. So the Chiefs, as you said, went defense. Good morning. Took two big swings at shoring up their defense last night. And even he had further excitement up in the Kansas City area as the Chiefs Brass trying to concentrate on the draft. And there was a tornado warning. Yeah. So all the front office guys had this scatter and take shelter while they're trying to figure out who they're going to draft. All right. So the chiefs did trade up. They had the number nine draft pick going in. They did trade up.

and gave up a couple of draft picks as well. Yeah, jumped up with Cleveland. In order to do that, yeah. With the Cleveland Browns, and they picked Louisiana State Corner Mansour Delane, number six overall. And then later on, the Chiefs used the number 29 pick on a defensive tackle from Clemson, Peter Woods. So as we mentioned, the Chiefs did make a trade, sent that ninth selection to the Browns, along with two other draft picks, to move up and make sure they got the corner they wanted in Delane. Help fill the void created by the trade of Trent McDuffie to the Rams, which is why the Chiefs had an extra first-round draft pick, too. So the Browns moved down for the second straight year, making a trade. I think it works out for them. So the chiefs get, and then the second guy they took was Peter Woods, a 6-2-298-pounder out of Clemson, defensive tackle. Of course, the chiefs do have Chris Jay Jones. He's not getting any younger. He does turn 32 this summer. He is coming off his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl appearance. But you never, you know, when you're 32 in the NFL, your days as an elite guy could be numbered. Yeah, he's. So you better have someone waiting in the wings to back it up. Well, and this may take pressure off of him. So having a rookie first rounder on the other side of that line might help. We'll see. But the guy they took number six overall, Delane, Mansour Delane, top corner available after he followed three seasons at Virginia Tech with one All-American season with LSU. 45 tackles, two interceptions, 11 starts last year, finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. All right, so there you go. That's where the Chiefs have landed up after the first round of the draft. Now we have a couple more rounds today, and I think the further rounds on Saturday. So the NFL draft still, we have a couple days left of that with more draft picks to come for everybody. So the Shockers are right now in fourth with a winning record in the conference.

Currently in Wichita, sunrise just underway for stormy day yesterday. It is mostly clear and it is 54 degrees here on this Friday morning. Storms moved across south central Kansas late yesterday afternoon into the early evening. Some places had hail up to softball size, and there were multiple weak land spout tornadoes. Softball and baseball-sized hail fell about five miles from Marion in Marion County late in the afternoon. And hail bigger than large apples fell to the west of Wellington in Sumner County late in the afternoon as well. A tornado ripping through Enid, Oklahoma Thursday evening, injuring at least 10 and causing damage around JD Vance Air Force Base. There are power lines down everywhere. There are multiple power poles down, and of course the neighborhood is completely blacked out. Now, we are right at the mouth of where the damage is. We've seen multiple emergency vehicles. They're combing through the debris, looking for people that may be injured. Now, I have seen at least... 12 ambulances, and even more emergency vehicles combing all through these streets. Now, we did come off of U.S. Highway 81 southbound and Southgate Drive, where the road has been blocked to the Air Force base. That's where most of the emergency vehicles were headed. Yesterday, the Trump administration said it's reclassifying medical marijuana as a less dangerous drug, and that's on the federal level, but it still remains to be seen how it's going to affect people here in Kansas. Industry experts said the reclassification will allow more research to be done on medical marijuana, but the impact on Kansas will be minimal. Our partners at 12 News spoke with Brett Harris, who owns a dispensary in Mays. It's great news in the fact that it's a domino effect. You've got to have this guy on a federal level actually start to fall in regulations. The reclassification moves marijuana from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule 3 drug. Harris explains the difference. Schedule 1 is heroin, is all the bad opioids. What does Schedule 3 do for cannabis? Research. and businesses like mine, we get to have insurance. The state of Kansas has to pass their own law to make sure that shift comes from a one to a three. The Kansas legislature is still a major hurdle and leadership shows no signs of changing its position. KBI director Tony Mativi has been outspoken about his opposition to legalizing marijuana in any form. He said his position is unchanged even after the reclassification. Harris hopes this federal reclassification can begin to change minds. I think this rescheduling does one thing for the state of Kansas, shows how far behind we are. We're a non-referendum state, unfortunately, and Ty Masterson says no cannabis bill, as long as I'm in control, will ever advance. That's a tough place to be. Only Kansas and Idaho have an outright ban on marijuana for recreational and medical use. Phil Hildebrand, KNSSS News. Businessman Philip Sarniky is among the Republican candidates for governor in Kansas. He says Kansas needs to turn things around. So last year CNBC, they do a business ranking by state, and they ranked our economy in Kansas 48th as a state. They gave every state a letter grade. They gave us an F. Just a few weeks after that, Moody's came out and said Kansas was one of the states already in a recession. We are, we rank, I think it's in the 40th, around 40, 42nd in new business startups. Sarnakey appeared with Woodward and Witt on KNSS yesterday. The primary election is three and a half months away in August. We will have later this morning, former Governor Jeff Collier, on the show with us. Next week, we will have Joy Aiken's and the Senate President, Ty Masterson, will be on the show, and we're reaching out to other gubernatorial candidates to be on the show with us as well. Arizona is looking at a new oil pipeline as the state is facing fuel supply issues.

Phoenix is one of the most expensive fuel markets in the nation. There are no refineries in Arizona and only two major pipelines. But that may be about to change. The Western Gateway pipeline would add a new stretch from the Texas Panhandle to Phoenix, capable of delivering 200,000 barrels a day of gasoline diesel and jet fuel coming from cheaper markets in the Midwest and Gulf Coast, and that should lower gas prices. The pipeline is being developed by Phillips 6. and Kinder Morgan. It could cost those companies more than $5 billion and be complete by 2029. Plus, it may make Arizona even more attractive for investment with a stronger, more stable energy supply. And that's Fox 10 Phoenix's Brian Webb with that report. A nature festival in northwest England is clearing something up. This event is about wildlife not going wild. Organizers of the Cumbria Nature Festival had to issue a reminder after some people confused naturalists with naturists prompting a note to dress appropriately. The event runs May 8th through the 10th along the Irish Sea coast, featuring guided walks, conservation talks, workshops, and family activities focused on local wildlife. The confusion actually drew more attention online, helping boost interest and ticket sales, and no one ended up asking for a refund. New lows from the current slide to downside was made yesterday by the cattle complex. Live cattle saw 16 to 17 session lows while the feeder cattle had 18 session lows. Now, the entire cattle complex managed to bounce off those lows and close positive yesterday. Cash cattle trade this week so far in the north and the south feed yards is mostly at $246, about $2 below the previous week. Lean hog futures yesterday traded mixed and closed positive.

On the close, June live cattle, 42 cents higher at 243.50. August feeder cattle, 47 cents higher, 359.35. And June, lean hogs up 82 cents at 103.45. Now, yesterday the May grain and soy option, I should say today, the May grain and soy options do expire. The weekly export sales were poor for the wheat and the soybeans yesterday and so for the corn. Kansas City wheat lit Thursday's upside as the wheat and the corn closed on the positive side. Now, to show you how dry it is here in the western part of Kansas, data from Kansas mezzanette shows that Stanton County has gone 102 days without measurable precipitation. Scott County, 104 days. Hamilton County, as many as... 150 days. and this is a severe situation in western Kansas. At the moment, we've got July Kansas City wheat down eight and a quarter at 6.71. July corn's up three quarters of a penny at 4.64.5. July soybeans, a penny, and a quarter higher at 1176. June crude oil, a $1.33 lower, $94. June gold, down 70 cents at $4,724. The May silver's up $40 at $75.90. June S&P. 35 and a half points higher at 7179 June dollar index 17 cents lower at $98.42 in June Dodgers futures are up 21 points at 49,516. It siphoned attention from a week where Republicans hoped to message about tax day and tout the merits of tax cuts from last year's one big, beautiful bill. As always, there are a lot of distractions around here, and that's kind of whatever the immediate news cycle is, said Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Lawmakers failed to approve a long-term extension of FISA Section 702, that's the controversial spy program, and the clock is ticking on the Iran war. There are signs of growing GOP angst over the conflict, despite Republicans in both chambers, repeatedly voting against war powers measures. Some Republicans have started to signal that they view 60 days, April 29th, as the deadline to end the war or seek Congress. congressional approval. With the speakers lobby, Chad Pergram, Fox News. Trading in crude oil has been rocky since the war with Iran started, amid the uncertainty over when the strait of Hormuz will reopen. The closure of the narrow strait has choked off the supply of crude oil from the Persian Gulf to global markets. The S&P 500 fell as much as one 1.3% in the afternoon before clawing back some of its losses. Steps to tell New York. All right. We asked, I think you asked the question yesterday off the air.
