So, Janelle, it's not often, Florida's entire congressional delegation agrees on something. And... It's probably been less often that you have the Republican members of that delegation stand up to President Trump and send him a letter urging him to reverse his position. Tell us what it is that united all of these members of Congress here in Florida. Offshore oil drilling. That's it. Nobody wants that happening off the coast of Florida because we saw. What happened when it did happen? We had the 2010 BP oil spill, which just, it was just a devastating situation for the state of Florida. Their tourism was just completely obliterated for a period of time. Even in places that weren't affected, you had like these huge marketing campaigns from the, you know, to visit Florida bureaus.

telling people, hey, our beaches are open. Like, you can still come here. Like, sure, you can't go to Pensacola, but Clearwater Beach, bring it. So, you know, that is something that nobody wants to see a repeat of. And even you said the whole, the whole congressional delegation, let's remember that that includes Byron Donalds's, who is currently running for governor with President Trump support. So to divide President Trump on this issue. when the stakes are that high for one of these members really tells you how important this is to Floridians. Well, you also had an order back in 2020 that Trump had put into effect that protected the region from offshore drilling. This kind of reverses that what the administration's looking to do. Now, I maintained when this story first broke that there's zero chance that this actually goes into effect that there's any offshore drilling. off the coast of Florida. It's just one of those issues that, one of the very few that unites everybody in this state that really crosses party lines. Nobody wants this. Yeah, and I, you know, I was speaking with somebody recently about this, and they made a really great point that, you know, if there was an oil rig. five miles off the coast of Marlago. Yeah. You know, what would, what would Trump be saying then? Right. Because it's, it's also an aesthetic issue. So, like, an example I've heard is, you know, people who live in the Apollo Beach area can get reasonably priced on waterfront property because they're staring across Tampa Bay at industrial, you know, infrastructure. They're staring at big bend and stuff. So. You know, I think that that's also something that needs to be considered is that it's not just a risk of an oil spill, it's also the aesthetic of staring at rigs when you're trying to watch the sunset or the sunrise. Yeah, and I think if you're the Trump administration, you can do the whole drill baby drill thing and just keep it out. of the Gulf, the coast of Florida, keep it off the coast of Florida on either side of the states. Exactly. Exactly. And again, I would be shocked if this actually went into effect. And you could see the alarm bells that went off when this was proposed, when this was reported among everyone from Byron Donalds's to Maxwell Frost. And I don't think there's much that Byron Donalds's and Maxwell Frost agree on. But this one brought them together. So that just tells you all you need to know. They would probably argue about which color of socks they should. Yeah. Exactly. We're joined by the publisher of Southeast Politics, Janelle Irwin Taylor. Again, you can find all of her work and a whole lot more at Southeast Politics.com. While we're talking about politicians here in Florida, it's always interesting when they get into these different tiffs. And you've got Senator Rick Scott taken a bit of a shot. and Governor Ron DeSantis over the Hope Florida scandal. What happened there? Yeah, so this is not new. Governor Scott has, he and Ron DeSantis have had big beef ever since Ron DeSantis was.

6:09

elected governor. And so I mean, Governor Scott, sorry, Senator Scott has been just hammering Ron DeSantis on the issue of... Hope Florida, which obviously was a big scandal involving Medicaid settlement money that ended up making its way into political coffers to fund opposition campaigns against recreational pot and the abortion amendment that was on the 2024 ballot. So this is a big deal. It's pretty much already tanked Casey Ron DeSantis' chances of running for governor. But, you know, these are two men who just do not get along, and it was exacerbated when Ron DeSantis decided to run for president, which anybody who was on Team Trump found as a personal insult. So, you know, Scott then endorsed. Trump and that made Ron DeSantis mad. So, I mean, this has been, this has been a political, you know, am I allowed to say the pee word, this peeing match? It's true. And it is not, it is, it is not new in any way, shape, or fashion. And then you've got Senator Scott, he's backing Byron Donalds's in the upcoming race for governor. And Ron DeSantis. Still not weighing in one way or another. He hasn't endorsed Donald's. He hasn't said that he would even like to see his own lieutenant governor, Jay Collins, enter the race, which I find really odd. You're not getting behind the guy that the entire party's coalescing around and the one who President Trump endorsed. And yet your own handpick person, you're... not getting behind them either. It's just, it's a weird situation. Well, he paid. himself into a corner in some manner of speaking. Because, you know, I think there was some hesitation at first because originally it was supposed to be, you know, here you go to your wife. Yeah. Which if I'm Casey Ron DeSantis, I'm also a little bit insulted by that. Like I, you know, get your sloppy seconds or something. But, you know, and then that kind of fell through because of the whole Florida issue. And now Jay Collins is not. doing the things, he's not lining up the pieces that need to be lined up in order to mount a successful bid for governor in this state. He's not raising the amount of funds he needs to attract support from outside the state.

8:46

but he's not getting the support from outside the state because he's not raising the funds that he needs to get people to endorse him. So it's kind of this which came first, the chicken or the egg sort of scenario. So, you know, he's at this point, he does not appear to be a viable candidate. Polling is putting him consistently in single digits, low single digits, I might add. You know, whereas Byron Donalds is just running away with it. So at this point. You don't want to have egg on your face by endorsing somebody who doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of being elected. I'm looking at Paul Renner, who maybe he had the right calculus right from the start. He said, Ron DeSantis will endorse me eventually. And so he's just kind of waiting in the wings, also polling in single digits, I might add. So, you know, I think that it's just, if you're a Republican right now and you're trying to endorse somebody other than Byron Donalds, you run the risk of making yourself look pretty silly. Yep. Janelle Irwin-Taylor, Southeast Politics publisher, you can check out all of her work and a whole lot more at SoutheastPolitics.com, and you can follow her on X4 for more, too, at Janelle Irwin-FL. Janelle, always appreciate it. We'll talk to you next week. All right. Thank you so much. The Ryan Gorman Show, 5 to 9 every weekday morning on News Radio, WFLA.
