But after it was all over, There was no game-winning home run. It was actually more like a swing and a miss, a shout-out. or a no-hitter for the funding for a new race stadium. It's like no real new info out of this thing. Ron DeSantis and the commissioner of baseball, Rob Manfred, held a news conference in Tampa at Hillsborough College where the new owners want to move the team from their current location in St. Petersburg. So Manfred praised local officials and their willingness to work with the new ownership group on a potential deal.
Ron DeSantis said state money doesn't cover the cost of a new ballpark, but he will support local officials if they want a pony up the money. And that, of course, is the ongoing problem. The raise owners say they will pay for a billion dollars for a new ballpark, but that's only half the cost. And taxpayers need to come up with the other billion dollars. So today, Hillsborough Commissioners expected to hear more about that idea on how to come up with funding in a meeting this morning. Again, there was really no new information at this event in Tampa with the governor and the commissioner of Major League Baseball. They both expressed the desire to keep the team in the Tampa Bay Area. Oh, they already knew that. Right, yeah. The governor said, you know, local governments going to handle the funding for the ballpark. The state could help maybe where possible transferring land to Hillsborough College for the deal, maybe some infrastructure improvements, but, you know, no state tax dollars going directly to the stadium. And so you have this big funding. I also thought it was interesting that Ron DeSantis made those public... proclamations about supporting the ballpark in this area and the redevelopment and even local governments ponying up that kind of taxpayer money for it he does have a relationship with the new raise owner patrick so you want to cut property taxes but spend the remaining money out of stadium well and don't forget the stadium like you know other venues in the area wouldn't pay any property tax. There's no property tax on the stadium. But Zalupski, the governor, appointed him to the University of Florida Board of Trustees. Zalepsky donated to Ron DeSantis in the past, including his presidential run. So, you know, there's a bit of a relationship there. But the bottom line is, you've got a ballpark now that costs more. I forget what the total was for the St. Pete. project. That was like a little over a billion dollars. So you had about half of that coming from local taxpayer revenue. Now you've got a ballpark that costs double that. And you have this new ownership group putting up essentially the same amount that the previous owner was willing to put up half, even though it's more because... It costs more. Yeah, the other one was like $1.4 billion. This is $2.3 billion. But you're also trying to get those funds in an area of town that's already having to use taxpayer funds, the same kinds of pools of money for the light names and for the box. So. I just, I don't see how the math works here. And there were some who were saying the governor supporting the deal will help maybe get Hillsborough County Commissioners over. Yeah, the Tampa Bay Times suggested that the presence of the governor and then the baseball commissioner is going to put pressure on the Republican members of the Hillsborough Commission to sort of go along with the idea of using the funds. But the problem is.
What are the funds? Right. Maybe we'll learn more about that this morning when Commissioner Ken Hagan lays out some of the discussions he's had. He's the most bullish one of them all. Yeah, he goes back to the days when they proposed that dome statement, remember, with the clear crystal dome over the city. But, no, the idea here is that can you actually squeeze out a billion or more dollars out of the remaining pools of money like you were talking about? Without raising, like, property taxes in the area, which would be the opposite of what the governor is trying to do everywhere else. And possibly a political disaster. Yeah. And look, right now, I mean, some renderings, I guess, are going to come out real soon. I can't wait to see what it's going to look like. Yeah, I'm sure they're going to be great. I'm sure they're going to look really nice. But we're not even talking about, at least as far as I know. Some kind of ballpark like Loom Depot where the Marlins play where it's like a retractable roof or something like that. I mean, that's not as far as I know what we're talking about with this raised ballpark. It's just going to cost double because stuff costs more now compared to when the last plan was put together. You know how you become a local hero and become one of the most popular owners in the league? You do what they did in Texas. in California. And you fund the stadium yourself. Yep. Because those owners, Jerry Jay Jones is a hero. That stadium in Texas is fantastic. And guess what? It was privately funded. Yep. And have to raise taxes or anything. And the raise are not proposing that. And that's a quick way to become unpopular if you're going to take all the taxpayer money to go for a stadium for billionaires. And these owners are making enough money too. I know that's the thing. Jerry Jay Jones return on investment, even ponying up that money. Yeah, that's the thing. Like they have, it's not like they don't have the money. Yeah. Or. They just want the taxpayers to spend it. they don't have to. Or if you don't, don't buy the team when you know this whole thing is going to be coming to a head. They knew this was going to be the situation. Yeah. We'll see what happens. What else is going on, Chris? Well, the U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Janine Piro, is threatening jail time for people who bring firearms into the U.S. Capitol. She says she doesn't care if you have a license in another district. She doesn't care if you're a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else. She said on Fox, you bring a gun into the district. count on going to jail. And as you might expect, that led to a big reaction from gun rights groups, even some Republicans like Ron DeSantis, who came out saying Second Amendment rights are not extinguished just because an American visits D.C. And he said that gun owners who conceal carry are the most law-abiding citizens in the nation. You know how long Republicans, conservatives have been trying to get D.C. to do away with some of their gun control policies. And then she comes out and says that. The NRA, they fired off a statement. A bunch of other gun rights organizations did the same. And Congressman Greg Stuby from right here in Florida is like, I legally carry a firearm in D.C. And there's nothing you can do about it. Right. Yeah. How can she even enforce that? Yeah. And then she kind of backtracked and said, we're only talking about illegal gun possession and all of that. But her statements...
right after all of those comments from members of the Trump administration about concealed carry tied to the Alex Pready shooting, just has a lot of pro-second amendment people saying, wait a sec, where is the administration's position on guns? Because it doesn't seem like it's where we thought it was going to be. Yeah, this definitely seemed to be a reaction to what happened in Minneapolis. And it apparently is backfiring amongst those who care about gun rights. you know, clearly this is not pro second amendment, this kind of policy. All right. Chris Trankman with today's top stories. Chris, thanks so much. Thank you. We've got today's top stories with Natalie Rodriguez. Good morning, Natalie. Good morning. U.S. Representative Sheila Scherfellis McCormick. pleading not guilty to federal theft charges. The Florida Democrat was a no-show in court. Her lawyer entered the plea on her behalf as she was in Washington casting a vote on government spending package. Sheriff Elizabeth McCormick is accused of stealing millions in federal disaster funds and then funneling it through different resources to her 2021 congressional campaign. On top of that, She's also accused of using that money to buy a $100,000 three-carat diamond ring. Now, last week, the House Ethics Committee found, quote, substantial reason to believe that the Florida Congresswoman, who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach, violated several federal laws, regulations, and standards of conduct. And the House Ethics Committee's investigative subcommittee is also planning to bring charges against her as well related to campaign finance law violations and campaign finance misconduct. her trial is set to start April 20th. Yes, so kind of ironic that her attorney is pleading not guilty for her in federal court tied to funding issues while she's in Washington voting on. federal funding i mean but you know essentially it's like hey all of a sudden this money uh showed up and like what am i supposed to do yeah why shouldn't i go buy myself a hundred and nine thousand dollar ring and then wear it in my congressional photograph yeah let's see how the vote goes and let's see what she's wearing next week yeah i mean who among us wouldn't go buy a hundred nine thousand dollar ring if we just happen to get a couple million dollars show up in our bank account i mean they won't notice it yeah it's what you would do it's just so brazen i said it's like on Goodfellas when they when they accomplish that heist and then all of a sudden they all show up to the bar with this fancy new stuff like a pink Cadillac and Robert De Niro's character is like what are you guys doing lay low come on she wears it in her official photo showing it off. Right. Arms crossed. I don't know. When I saw that picture, I was like, there it is. It's great. And like you mentioned, the House Ethics Committee, they're thinking about doing a public hearing. So this would be the first televised disciplinary hearing in nearly 15 years. They didn't even do this for George Santos, but they're thinking about doing it for Sherfellus McCormick. Are they going to have shame? Yes, they should. As she walks down to testify.
Yeah, they should, but that could be a real show before her actual trial. So in the meantime, it is kind of crazy. You got all of this stuff going on, yet there she is, voting on funding packages and all of that. What else is going on this morning, Natalie? We have a guy behind bars. He's accused of causing a crash with his ride chair driver in Miami. He had groped her. It happened in Southwest Miami, Little Havana, 26-year-old Oscar Sanchez Aguirre, he had a allegedly runs off out of the crashed car, but then he was caught just moments later in a parking lot. It charged with battery and total negligence, exposure to personal injury. How scary and how disgusting for that victim, she's, you know, just doing her job. She's driving people around, and this guy allegedly gropes her and attacks her in the car. There's nothing she can do. She loses control. She crashes, almost dies. Now Bond is set at $14, a little over $1,400. for the suspect and by the way he's also on an immigration hold yeah i'm wondering i mean this is a gross story luckily the driver's okay what exactly was his plan there like you yeah what's your end game uh as she's driving like what do you think is going to happen she crashed the car Right. Does he think he's going to get safely to his destination? Where was he going? I don't know. So you have the Uber driver in South Florida who's attacked, and then you had a passenger in Hillsborough County attacked by a lift driver. Yeah. What's going on with these ride chairs? You had a guy who was arrested. Deputy said he choked a woman and threatened to kill her while she was riding in his car. He pulls into a grassy area, and she must have known. as he's not clearly going to the destination, this is about to get bad. He puts the car in park. He climbs into the back seat. Luckily, she convinces him to stop and escapes from the vehicle and reports the attack. And he's got a history of this lift driver. Yeah, that's the real crazy thing about this story, is that there were already two other complaints against him, and yet somehow he was still driving for lift. Yeah, not everybody can get a lift driver like the one who we featured on the show yesterday, who thought you were amazing. Dana Marie. Yes. I looked her up. The girl on Fox. Yeah, she's pretty hot. Yeah, yeah. He got you confused with a Fox reporter and also wanted to chime in and say how attractive Anna Paulina Luna is. That's right. And the hottest woman in Congress. Lauren Boebert, yeah. Not every lift driver could be that friendly. But, you know, fruit. I mean. It's a small number of total, like, ride shares that take place on a daily basis where this kind of stuff happens. But you wonder, you know, you hear these stories if those self-driving Waymo's and Teslas, if they become more popular just because... Especially for women. Yeah. Although you can, and we talked about this in the 5 o'clock hour, if you're listening in South Florida, you know, we're on a little bit earlier in Tampa, you mentioned then that you can... request women. Yes, I have not done it, but I know you can request a female driver. Yeah. What about you, Natalie? I feel like you would want to request a dude, right? Oh, I'm good either way. I can defend myself. I've taken self-defense classes. Bring it on. Gee, I change here. I just feel like Natalie would be like, let me roll the dice and see if I get some haughty driver. Listen, I'm still waiting for like the model. Nothing ever happens to me. I get massages nothing. What's going on? What am I doing wrong?
