And let's go straight to the hotline and bring in the publisher of Florida politics, Peter Shorch. You can find all of his work and all of his teams reporting at FloridaPolitics.com. And Peter, I want to start with some comments that Ron DeSantis made during an interview with Sean Hannity the other day. He kept open the possibility of another run for president in 2028. Did that come as a major shock to you? Come on, right? You know better. Is that like the least surprising thing ever? That's like, you know, would it be surprising if I told you that I'm going to go to Las Vegas for Mark Mannet? Right. And then go hit up at Disney Cruise after? Yeah, that's about how surprising it is. Not surprising. I guess I say that, but it was a little surprising because, you know, everybody, Hems and Hawes, I was looking at a list of the Democratic presidential candidates. And Wes Moore from Maryland was, you know, doing the denial, you know, we'll wait and see kind of thing. And I was looking at that top 10 list that Chris Saliza put through. And most of these people, they almost insults our intelligence by saying, you know, no, I'm not, I'm not thinking at all about running for president. Meanwhile, their pollsters. are out there focus grouping in Des Moines and Nashua. Yeah. So I thought it was kind of interesting that he went that far on it. I thought, you know, the idea that, so he also made some comments where he said, hey, I would have, it was basically I would have won had Trump not been indicted. And he said specifically that 90% of the people that voted for Trump would have voted for him. And I just thought,

Even if that is true, and I don't think that it is, it's just an amazing lack of humility from a guy who did not win a single county in Iowa, that he couldn't, that he was not able to say. anything self-deprecating, that he wasn't able to say, you know, we didn't get out to a great start. We learned a lot on the trail, et cetera. It was just, I lost because Trump got indicted. And that's just a rewriting of history that's not accurate. And it tells me that Ron DeSantis is still not ready to run for president until he does that kind of, you know, until he becomes more self-aware of why he did not win. in 2023. Yeah, because going into that race, the big question was, will Trump get in? And before he did, then you had most people saying that Ron DeSantis was the frontrunner for the Republican field. Going into 2028, I don't think that's going to be the case. I mean, you've got Vice President JD Vance, who we know is going to run, who typically... polls at the top of a potential list. You've got Marco Rubio, whose popularity is surging. I think he's going to be very formidable. And then you have Ron DeSantis and some others, and I think it's going to end up being a really big field, too. And remember, the big thing that Ron DeSantis had in 23 was a nine-figure campaign account, which he, you know, he raised all that money. After he won election as governor, people were, you know, they were throwing the money at him. Remember, he had the guy out of Nevada who gave him tens of millions of dollars. He had all of these, you know, tech bros lined up to give him millions of dollars. I don't think that that'll be there. I don't know that he'll have. $10 million after he gets out of office. And it's still going to be a question of what he does in that interim. Like, you know, we, we have no idea what he wants to do yet. I keep speculating. I think he's going to do something in sports. I really think that that is where he's going to head to. But, you know, I don't know how he's going to be able to do the culture warrior stuff that he lined up perfectly with Paul Renner in the 22, 23 legislative session. He is going to be at more of a disadvantage than he was in 23. Of course, he's not going to be running against Trump. You know, I'm not scared. I will say this. If I'm him, I'm not scared of Marco Rubio or JD Vance. I do think that both of them have big Achilles heels that he can beat them with. I just don't know that, or that can be beaten, but I don't know that Ron DeSantis is that person. We're joined by the publisher of Florida politics, Peter Schorsch, and talking about that interim period after he's out of office. Trump said something interesting yesterday. He said that he considered Ron DeSantis for a role in the administration when he's done as governor. And I do think there's going to be some turnover soon in that cabinet. So could that be where Ron DeSantis goes to keep up his profile heading into a potential presidential run?

6:26

I mean, if you told me that in January of 2027 that Ron DeSantis is Attorney General of the United States, I wouldn't be surprised. I don't know that. Defense secretary, I could see that too. Defense secretary. I don't know. I mean, there's just going to be, I mean, the turnover that's going to come November, December of 26, when I do think that there will be a significant blue wave nationally, not here in Florida. And Trump will be. pinned up against the wall. I think that he will blame others. And, you know, like that was the mistake I thought George Bush did in 06 is he fired Rumsfeld after the election, where I think he could have maybe done a little bit better had he fired Rumsfeld ahead of the election. Same thing here. I feel like, man, how does Pete Hegseth, and to an extent, Pam Bondi, I understand why Pam Bondi has a job because she does what Trump wants. I just don't understand how Pete Hegseth still has a job. So if I had to say anything, I would say sec deaf, but I can also see, I could see Pam Bondi leaving and I could see Ron DeSantis sliding into that role. We're joined again by the publisher of Florida politics, Peter Schor, she could find all of his work. Well, not to interrupt, I should say, let's not, maybe it's not. Ron DeSantis that goes to D.C. Maybe it's Casey. You know, there's been a lot of speculation that Casey will take some sort of maha role, deputy something under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., et cetera. And that may be more of a natural fit. That may make Casey happy. And that kind of leaves Ron to do some other things. Just throwing that out there as well. We're joined again by the publisher of Florida Politics, Peter Shores. She can find all of his work and all of his teams reporting at FloridaPolitics.com. One other thing I want to touch on President Trump pushing the wife of RNC chair, Joe Gruders, to run for Vern Buchanan's open seat now that he's retiring. Tell us about that and how it could impact the race. Yeah, late Monday Donald Trump put out one of his tweets I'm hearing, you know, and a lot of people are talking about. Sydney Grutter's very capable in southwest Florida. You know, I think Joe Gruders wanted to run for that seat, but I don't think it would look good for him to go from RNC chair into Congress after being in the Senate would send the wrong message heading into the midterms. I think not, you know, this is one of the weird things. It's different than. CD2, where Biden and then CD19, where Brian McDonald's is, where there's a whole host of candidates, they really haven't been able to find somebody that wants to run for this Furnby canancy. And so Trump tweeted out an encouraging tweet. Sidney Grutter said, you know, she's definitely thinking, I would, I would not be surprised by the next time we talk if Sydney Gruters is in that race. I think that's CD16, which is basically Manatee in Sarasota. Yeah. And if you got the Trump endorsement, almost a shoeing pretty much, right? It's, yeah, at this point, and we saw that.

You know, there's two trends that we've seen. We see that the Democrats are winning these special elections, but the Republican in the in the in the Republican or in the GOP primaries is the one that has the Trump nomination is, is winning. All right. The publisher of Florida politics, Peter Schorch, again, find all of his work and all of his team's reporting and sign up for the Sunburn newsletter.
