The Ryan Gorman Show podcast, presented by Farah and Farah, accident attorneys, Tampa. Let me bring in HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., thanks so much for taking a few minutes to come on this show. So you were at Tampa General Hospital yesterday because they had taken the make hospital food healthier pledge. What exactly are you asking hospitals that participate in the initiative to do? Well, you know, Hospital food is notorious. We flipped the food pyramid about eight months ago, and for the first time, it's the science-based food pyramid. And now we're now trying to drive changes in the dietary culture by persuading all of the major institutions of our society to align with the food pyramid. Hospitals are a no-brainer. The hospital food is, as I said, notorious. If you're at a friend's house and say this tastes like the hospital food, it's a majority. It's not a compliment. Hospital food is medicine. And the hospitals ought to be serving food to the patients that are going to aid in their recovery that are going to. speed, the recovery that are going to lower recidivism, returns to the hospital. And when you go to the hospital, 50% of the people who go into hospitals are pre-diabetic or diabetic, and they're being fed, jello, all these familiar menu items like jello and pudding and sugar drinks. So Tampa Central has, or Tampa General, has led the country.

in switching hospital foods. We gave Dr. Oz and I and Jim gave a issue a pledge request to all the hospitals in the country to change their foods so that it's healthy food locally sourced wherever possible fresh and wholesome and nutrient dense and basically aligning with the food pyramid. And Tampa General was the first hospital to sign onto the pledge. It already put two years of investment and the changing of food. It brought on the celebrity chef, the Iron Chef, Jeffrey Circadian, who changed their menu. And we went and had the hospital food today, and it tastes like something that you get the finest restaurant in Tampa. And the cost of the hospital is minimal. It's about a 5% increase in food cost. And the patients are loving it and pretty soon will have the data to show the impact on health. Will there be consequences for family and friends who are a bad influence in sneak fast food into hospital rooms they're visiting? I think they should be forced to eat a Florida broccoli, to be honest with you. You know what? I don't think the patients are going to be asking. The patients are going to be asking the fast food. The food they were getting was inedible. It was appalling. It was unspeakable. And it was making them thicker. And, you know, Tampa General actually had a McDonald's on site, and it closed the McDonald's, and it opened up a rice deli. which has excellent clues. So I think they're doing everything that they ought to be doing to provide the patient for high quality care. We're joined now by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. here on the Ryan Gorman Show. I want to ask you about something that happened earlier this week. Our Attorney General here in Florida, James Uthmeier, initiated an investigation into the use of potassium bromate by major food manufacturing companies. I know... The FDA has looked at the safety of it, but still permits its use. Is that something that needs to be revisited? Right now, we're not adding potassium. There's a number of ingredients and foods. These ingredients were added under a loophole called the grass standards. These are ingredients that are illegal in Europe. We have 10,000 ingredients in our food. And in Europe, they only have 400. And the other 9,600 are illegal. We don't even know what most of them are. When I got to this, the agency, I said, how many ingredients exactly do we have in our food? And they said, we don't know because the industry is not required to tell us. They basically self-authenticate. They just say, we're adding some stuff for the food. It's safe. Don't worry about it. And for them. 40 years, my agency has accepted their word, and we're now the sickest people in the world. So potassium bromate is one of the ingredients that we're looking at. We're asking for safety data from the industry. Titanium dioxide is another. There's a lot of these ingredients, but what we want to do is do it extensive front of package labeling.

So that consumers will know it in their food, they'll be able, we will be able to advise them with that kind of labeling, whether they are eating ultra-process food. And we're putting out the first definition ever of ultra-process food. And it's already having an impact on the American public because the sales of ultra-processed food have dropped dramatically since we came into office. So we're not doing, for the most part, we're not doing, we're not banning ingredients, we're not coercing people. We are informing them and helping them make informed choices. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., last thing I want to touch on real quick, the current cyclospora outbreak. We're at over 100 cases here in Florida. It's making big headlines across the country, as you know. And people are starting to avoid some of the healthy foods that you want them to eat because of it. What's your department doing to help deal with this outbreak? Well, first of all, there are cytospora outbreaks every summer. The problem with cytospora is that there's a, that impedes forensic investigations about where it's coming from, is that it has a two-week gestation period. So by the time that people get sick, the produce is usually gone from the store. And it's hard for FDA to go and find and determine exactly what the source is. FDA yesterday announced the results of our investigation. And, you know, you can go on FDA's website and look at that.

Vituspori is treatable. There are four or five different drugs that treat it very, very successfully. And now that we know the probable culprits, I think it's going to be much easier for people to make healthy choices. One other thing, there's been a rumor fake news in the press that said, CDC cut one of the pro-surveillance programs, and that is simply not true. All right, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.., with us here on the Ryan Gorman Show. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., really appreciate the time. Thanks so much for coming on. Thank you for having me, Brian.
