Says, so I'm going on a trip, and I had set up for a friend to stay at my house and watch my pets. We did a test run this weekend, and it did not go well in my opinion. The house was messy. They did not walk the dog, but they also fed them snacks. They didn't see the problem. I offered them $50 a day when, and they were very excited because they need the money. I was planning on being gone for two weeks. Now I'm considering putting the dogs in a kennel and having some a check on the cats. How do I gracely get out of this? I only have a week, or a few weeks to get it worked out, to work it out. Help, signs J. So there's real money involved. They were going to, this person was going to pay this person to stay at the house. It's a transaction. It could be that they didn't pay him this trial weekend, but then they're paying them for the, maybe they'll act different. I don't know. That's always weird. Let's see. First, and this is up on the Dave and Molly Facebook page, so you can find it. The first one, Connie says, preserve the friendship. Get a service or kennel to take care of your pets. All right. Sarah says hire somebody from someone from Rover. I work Rover. I text picks on walks and picks of their house if needed. Just tell her you decided to hire a professional from Rover. It's like $40 a day. Hey, that's a great idea. And you've already booked them. Oh, wow, it's $40 a day. Well, it sounds all good, but then. then your friend, hey, I was counting on that, because I have 50 bucks a day. That's not bad. Well, and if it's a true, like, house-sitting situation, maybe the person was thinking, well, I'm going to be living in this house for a couple weeks. And other people have made arrangements. So where I was, maybe there's somebody staying there. So there's some of those kind of issues. Sure. I love the rover idea. Mm-hmm.

Well, if they come, but $40 a day, that's just them coming. I don't think they're staying there, though. I mean, I wouldn't leave doggy overnight. Kitty cats are different. Cats don't care. Michelle says, hey, I really want to use your guys to pet slash house sit. But after the trial run, my feedback is that it is very important to me that you walk the dog, refrain from feeding snacks, as well as keeping the house tidy. If you can commit to these changes, we can go forward. But if not, I'll need to make other arrangements. Not a comfortable conversation, but one that clients had to have with me many times when I cleaned houses for a living in college. It's a give and take. And as a dog owner or parent, I would try as best you can to work it out. I feel kennels are stressful for dogs. Yeah. Maui's never been to a kennel has she. No. She's only had one or two nights in her whole life where she's not been at the house. What were those circumstances? It was Vegas. And my daughter was out of town. And so it would just so, Mellie went with a friend. Well, it was a person she actually did, you know. baths and some trimming but she didn't have to do that then she i think she had a bath there one time this has been it's been five years ago probably and she stayed the night yep and it was nice because the um the person had a huge uh backyard and so maui doesn't get to really run and i think she likes to run yeah um But when do dogs get to run? I mean, sometimes I'll just see me sort of run in circles in the backyard. Because even if I take her for a walk, she's not getting to run. Yeah. On the beach, she got to run, run. But you're right. They don't get that. Yeah, she will, they'll run through the house like when, you know, Nadine's puppy was at the house. They'll, and Maui can, you know, she's 11, but she can turn it on puppy mode pretty quick. Yeah. And so she likes to do that. But when I see people in the park, which is always included in our walk. And they have their dogs like loose and they're like throwing frisbee or the ball or whatever and their dogs are sprinting. I think Maui would like that, but she's not a ball chaser. See, that's what with Kamis, we could take her right off and throw the ball. And she would just be winded. And when we first got her when she was five, she was so fast. I mean, she could just hear her galloping. She loved it. But you could trust her to come back with Mesa. Right. Bye. See you. Okay, whenever you, I'll find your way home. I'll see you here. Although I am thinking this winter when the golf course is closed and the snow comes. Oh, there you go. Because when she was on the beach, she came right back to us. She was great. And so, but yeah, I think they do like to get out and run sometimes. And I can't keep up. If I start to jog, she'll go, oh, yeah, we're running. And all of a sudden I'm being pulled. And they get all excited. You got to keep the expectations low.

tamper it. We're walking. She's been on a couple of short runs with Nadine, you know, with pack of wild dogs. Yeah. Do runs and stuff. But I think Maui would, if she had like an open area and she could just like sprint. First of all, I don't think it would take much for her to be very tired. Yes. And, you know, a tired dog is a happy dog. But, yeah, she doesn't get a whole lot of that. See, and Camus was used to kennel life, like she was used to that. Mesa, I think it would be horrible. I mean, I have to have a house sitter. There's no. In fact, I have a couple of trips coming up where I'm trying to figure that out. But it would, it's not an option to put her at a kennel. I just think she would be devastated. You know, she's. She's got the trust, but I just, I don't, I think that would be bad. I think it would be major setbacks in the trust area. She wouldn't want to get in the car again. Let's see. Let's see. H says, bring up your concerns in a kind and respectful way. Maybe try another test run if both parties are willing. But at the end of the day, they're your pets and it's your home. If you aren't comfortable, then you have to have an adult conversation and tell them it's not going to work. It may be uncomfortable for you, but if you go through with them watching your pets and your home with this much apprehension already, it's going to affect how you enjoy your trip for sure. And then Carrie says, too many people are afraid to speak up and say what they want to have happened. Accountability is important to learn that if they don't do the job right, they won't keep the job. This is a great learning experience for both of them. Be a boss. Let them know what you want and expect. And what you don't want, get a firm commitment. If they'll do it your way, otherwise get other arrangements. A very similar comment from Bobby D on our text line. Real simple, tell them that you've changed your mind. Thank them and move on. Don't overthink this. Mm-hmm. I think you could say. Be direct. That's being very direct. I think you could just say, you know, I really wanted this to work, but just based on this trial run, I can already tell that you're not, you don't feel what I feel is important. And that's not going to go well for either of us. So it's better if I just get a professional service. Maybe I would pay you to come by and see the cats. I mean, maybe that's what I would do is just say, I'm going to put the dogs in kennel if that, because they're leaning towards the kennel. And because if that's the person you were relying on, obviously there's not a lot of people lined up that you could trust to stay your house. So now if you go kennel, I'd say, so I'm downgrading, downgrading your responsibilities. And now I will pay you $20 a day to come by and see the cats. Just see them. Just to feed them and see them in the water. You know, because the cats will be okay. And you can get a lot of people to come by and check on your cats. Sitting with a dog is way different. And I remember in my cat days, I remember being gone for a week. And no problem. There was no one came to the house. It was just, I mean, cats are fine. They have food. They have water. They got a box. Yeah, I think I put out two boxes that. I mean, it's.

They don't have room for your dog. Yeah, that's true. That is true. So that's the moral of the story. Just don't go anywhere. Or don't have pets. Well, you know. Or don't have friends. Don't have friends. Or get more friends. Oh, yeah. Or don't ever ask for a favor from anybody ever find, cancel everything. Maybe that. Right? Yeah. So, well, good luck to you, Jay. I hope it goes well. I hope that you find something, you know, to handle. That's a little stressful. It's very relatable, though, and I'm sure that these... You know, this situation has popped up, popped up before. You think, oh, this is my friend. They'll be fine with the house and they'll do the checking. And maybe they're not, I'm assuming this person is, but maybe they're not dog people. Maybe they're not used to being around the other end. They're not as friendly and maybe some might be better for all creatures if there isn't something like that. Yeah. And some dogs do like. The kennel, I'm guessing. They probably get to see their friends. Yeah, exactly. I think if it's the doggy daycare stuff, like doesn't Nadine have a drop in place where she takes her dogs? I think they're much happier there during the day. It's like kids going to daycare rather than sitting out. They burn a lot of energy there. And that's always nice to go, okay, well, they were with their friends all day. So they're not going to be running wild through the house. Well, good luck. Thank you.
