Another hour with Bob Lonsbury, starting now on News Radio AM 1180. Thanks, Joe. I so appreciate that. Good morning, Americans. Hello, my friend. Like always, it is a delight to be here with you. It's a funny deal. I was just reading the story about this Curtis Sliwa guy down in New York City, Republican candidate running for mayor of the Big Apple, if you will. And I looked up to see if he was ever in the military, and he wasn't. He wears the red beret, typically associated with American paratroopers, but he wasn't ever in the service. And to be honest with you, I could tell by his conduct of late. And I don't mean this to be overly critical. And I also, the figure of speech I'm about to use, I don't mean it to be a flip or disrespectful. Because, well, the deal is that Curtis Sliwa never learned that sometimes you're supposed to throw yourself on the grenade. in reference to like you're in some combat situation and all of a sudden there's a grenade there and there are people standing around somebody's got to jump on that grenade or everybody's going to die and somebody's got to jump on the grenade. I don't say that casually Sunday. My son Scott and I, he's 14. We drove down to Wellsville for the ridge walk and run. He did a 10K, finished second in his age group. I did this 25K trail run through the hills and woods. At any rate, going down and coming back, we passed through SIO, where, of course, Jason Dunham grew up. Jason Dunham, a young Marine. who threw himself on a grenade, literally, in order to save the lives of his fellow Marines. He saved the lives of his fellow Marines, but paid with his own. And that story, I hope you're familiar with it, that example of selflessness, I hope that we never forget it.
Usually we drive through SIO, we stop in and visit his grave. If you ever get there, going through SIO, there's a north-south road. Is that route 19? I never know. But whatever the main, you know, there's a road that you're on. And to the east side of it, you'll see a little cemetery. And just go up in that cemetery and you'll get almost to the part where you turn around and then like make a big, you know, drive out the other driveway. Right up there at the top is where Jason Dunham is buried. And it wouldn't be inappropriate at all for you to stop in and just pay your respects. I think your thoughts and say a prayer. One thing I always know when I go up there to where Jason Dunham is buried is that as you stand at his grave and you look back down towards the road, You notice the backs of the other headstones. And it looks like the custom at the SIO Cemetery. You know, if you're a veteran and you die, one of the benefits you get is, well, your wife gets a free flag. That's pretty cool, I guess. But you get a brass plaque. Right? And which, yeah, some stoner will probably come pry off your tombstone one day and sell for scrap. But you get a brass plaque. And in SIO, they put it on the back. The custom looks to be they put it on the back of your headstone. And so as you stand there next to the grave of this young man who gave his life for his fellow Marines in the way I described and who subsequently and posthumously was awarded the Medal of Honor. But as you look downhill, you see the backs of dozens of headstones that have that brass plaque on there, denoting that there rests a veteran. And you learn something about this young man, maybe, and how he came to be who he was. You grow up in a town with that many veterans. You grew up in a town with that sort of commitment to service to country, and you're going to come out a certain way. And Jason Dunham came out that certain way. But the deal is, sometimes you have to throw yourself on a grenade. Sometimes in life you have to sacrifice your personal interests for the greater good. And that's a true principle that applies to many, many parts of life. And I would suspect, general listener, that you probably maybe more than once in your life have, again, a figure of speech, have had to throw yourself on a grenade where you take the hit. so that others can be benefited. For example, maybe if you've been busting your ass for a whole bunch of years so that the mortgage could get paid and the kids could get fed and now they could go to college, maybe that's kind of throwing yourself on the grenade a little bit. But getting to Curtis Sliwa and how I knew that he had never been in the service.
Because in the service, I think they teach you directly or indirectly about that aspect, that your interests are certainly important, but your interests are not paramount. That the one thing more important than your interests is your duty. And you've got to be honest about your duty, and you've got to do your duty, right? And I mentioned again in the context of poor Mr. Curtis Sliwa because, you know, he's running for mayor of New York City with that gentleman, Mr. Zohran Mamdani, and the not gentleman, Andrew Cuomo. And so we've all seen the math with three of them in the race, Mr. Zohran Mamdani, who is a socialist and, you know, probably an anti-Semite. You have, Zohran Mamdani runs away with it if it's a three-way race. If Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, drops out, it becomes a far more competitive two-candidate race. Unfortunately, the other candidate is Andrew Cuomo, who's, you know, a turd. But sometimes you've got to pick which turd you want to eat. And if I got to eat a turd, Andrew Cuomo is the one. The deal is that the New York Post has called on this man, Curtis Sliwa, to drop out. He works for a guy, forgive me the name, he's a billionaire who theoretically could give me a job one day, so I shouldn't mispronounce his name. But Katzamedes or Katsamamemetes or something like that, you've heard of him? I've seen him write stuff, and I think he's got a radio show that he does, but he owns a very large radio station. in New York City, which is a very large city. And Curtis Sliwa works for him, meaning that this Mr. Katsamemetes or whatever has been paying Curtis Sliwa's bills for the last several decades. Katsamememetes, or however you say it, he says, yeah, Curtis Sliwa ought to drop out. Curtis Sliwa cannot win. You know, he's polling at a solid 14%. You're not going to win, Brada. But if you are in the race, you assure that Zohran Mamdani wins. And here's the thing. If you want to vote for Zohran Mamdani, do it. That is your right. And I'm not going to criticize anybody for that. But voting for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Zohran Mamdani kind of through the back door. At any rate, this gets back to, so anybody who can do math says, well, you know, unless Zohran Mamdani's going to be the next mayor, Curtis Sliwa's got to drop out. New York Post, which is kind of the newspaper that, you know, working class people, you know, blue collar kind of tend to vote for Trump people in New York City would read. It says, well, Curtis Sliwa's got to drop out. And his boss, Katzumatidis, whatever, says, well, Sleeve's got to drop out. And the word from Curtis Sliwa this morning is, I don't care who says what, I'm not dropping out. And again, that's his prerogative, of course. But the man's never been in a situation where he's had to learn that duty is more important than self-interest.
And if you look at, and I'm not trying to run down Mam Danny, he believes what he believes, he's doing what he's doing. I believe that Mr. Zohran Mamdani would be bad for New York City, bad for New York State, and bad for the United States. I hope that he's not elected mayor. I think that, you know, most conservative people would come to that same conclusion. So Curtis Sliwa is there, and if he steps aside, that creates a chance to keep this gentleman, Mr. Zohran Mamdani, from winning. But he would rather stay in the race. He would rather pursue his own interests than serve the greater interests of his city, his state, and his country. And to be honest with you, it's a cute red hat, but I'm not that impressed by someone who puts his own interests that far ahead of others. It's mission first. You do the good that needs to get done, and then you worry about yourself. If you worry about yourself first, you're really no good to anybody. Take a break back in a moment. 222180 our number. Hi, I was just curious. My friend got an adjustment inflation check from Kathy Hochul. He's a registered Democrat. None of my Republican friends have got one, and I just thought it was a little strange. Thanks for your service. Thank you. I appreciate that, buddy. They went to taxpayers. Maybe your Republican friends don't pay taxes. Here's a deal. For whatever reason, these are being written. How much you get. is based on how much you make, and they are being sent out over a period of time. So it's not like there was one day they're cutting all the checks and they're mailing. But if I understand it correctly, I think it might be like a month and a half or so that they're going to send the checks out over. Here's the deal. My wife and I are really bad at checking the mail. They're... In life, if you don't use mail anymore, and my apologies to the Postal Service. If you don't use mail anymore, you can kind of do okay. It's not that bad. I mean, you're all right. And so I don't check the mail and she doesn't check the mail. But there are two times a year when we check the mail. One, when the, I have a lifetime hunting, a sportsman's license, hunting and fishing license. And in, when is it, September or something like that, they send out like your tags or whatever. I watched very closely the mail for that. I don't think I saw him this year. And two, whenever the Democrat in office is looking to buy votes and they're sending a check, we look very closely for that. Here's the deal. Be this hypocrisy or practicality or prudence, I have no idea. But I will cuss and curse and condemn Kathy Hochul trying to buy our votes with these checks. These checks make no sense whatsoever. They're very bad policy. And yet, as soon as I get mine, obviously, I'm going to cash it 100%. No doubt about that. Let's stop. Joe Lasky, the voice of finger lakes, he's got some news for us. They're running the ridge walk 15 miles up and down the hills. So I'm not going to run today, but I expect to tomorrow. And I also am going to be, I think maybe. I've got a friend who needs some work done in his beehives. He, a great beekeeper, far better, far smarter, far more knowledgeable than I. But he ended up developing where you get stung by a bee. He's wildly allergic. He could pass away. Twice they've had to do epipans on him. And so at any rate, if the weather holds till this afternoon, I'm going to go tend his bees this afternoon. And the sound of bees buzzing around me trying to sting me freaks me out a little bit. So at any rate, I need a book. This is all to get me to I was in the newsbreak. on the little app on my phone, and I mostly get books from two places. The New York Public Library in New York City, and there's like a library thing for, you know, Genesee, Livingston, and Wyoming counties, and I don't know if it's Ontario or Orleans, but the Glow counties, they've got a library thing. So I was on there. And I saw on Facebook, somebody had a quote from Clarence Thomas. And it was from his memoir, my grandfather's son. And I haven't read or listened to that in a number of years. And I thought, well, I'll do that. While I'm tending the bees, I'll listen to the story of Clarence Thomas. And so the New York Public Library has books out the wazoo. On the app, you can read a book like staring at the screen. You can listen to a book. It's a wonderful service. But here's the funny thing. They don't have my grandfather's son. Clarence Thomas has written one book. He's an historically significant figure. He's a long-time member of the United States Supreme Court, Associate Justice. He also has written a whole boatload of opinions. His views on the law have been wildly influential over this last generation. And yet, his memoir is not in the New York Public Library. In fact, there were books about Clarence Thomas. None of them were biographical. All of them were somewhat mocking or critical. Just out of curiosity, as you know, Clarence Thomas was the second African American to serve on the Supreme Court.
The great Thurgood Marshall, of course, the first. So I just, you know, New York Public Library, I typed in Thurgood Marshall and found, you know, biography after biography, after biography, after biography, which, of course, there should be. But this, and there were writings of Marshall, and the Thurgood Marshall, there's a ton of stuff in there, as there should be. But it's just interesting that you have two justices who each in their own way have made tremendous impacts upon the laws of the United States, if you will. Both of them also, African American gentlemen and setting whatever example or whatever that that sets. But one is essentially ignored by the New York Public Library. I mean, the only books about him that I found that you could read or listen to were mocking and critical of him. And in this other Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, who's completely deserving of the historical treatment and of being, you know, there being a bunch of books about him. But there's piles of them about Marshall and nothing other than mocking and criticism about... General, or General, I'm sorry, Clarence Thomas. And it's funny because, you know, are we coming up on ban the book week or whatever or month where our library friends who really seem often to be on the cutting edge of the whole woke sensitivity thing? Somebody complained about a book sometime. And, of course, that makes all Republicans, you know, book burners and stuff like that. So they have their ban the book thing where, you know, they come after us for being closed-minded, this, that, and the other. Well, my thought is read whatever book you want. But I would say in regard to this, that, you know, the New York Public Library, which may be the largest in the country, has seemed to have edited itself, seems to have censored itself fairly well. And, you know, you may agree or disagree with Clarence Thomas, but you cannot deny that he is an historically significant figure, right? You just can't. And yet, because he's not the, you know, he's not the right slice of bread, if you will, because he doesn't go the right direction politically, because he has not received the endorsement, if you will, of the progressive world, he's like a second-class Supreme Court justice. You look the other way and ignore.
Clarence Thomas, who faced Jim Crow discrimination as a boy. Clarence Thomas, who grew up when the Ku Klux Klan was active and violent where he was growing up. Clarence Thomas, who grew up, like they said when I was a kid, so poor that they didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out. Clarence Thomas, who came up in extraordinary difficulty and in many ways exemplifies the American dream of anybody can grow up to be anything if they work hard and do their best. Clarence Thomas is shunned. He has been shunned or excommunicated, if you will, because he happens to be a conservative, because his personal views, his personal intellect, his personal nature takes him away not in conformity with the orthodoxy of the progressive movement. And so they have canceled him essentially all of his career. And again, to see this at the New York Public Library, at the same time that they're doing this, oh, people are banning books, say, yes, people are, and you're leading the parade. 2-2-1180 is our number back with you in just a moment on News Radio Wham 1180. The deal is that this ceasefire over there is held together with chewing gum, you know, bailing wire, stuff like that. It is, again, in the week and a day that there has been a ceasefire, more than 100 Palestinians have been killed. Two Israelis have been killed. There have been dozens of airstrikes against Palestinian positions. And, you know, there was, Israel said we're cutting off food to Gaza. Apparently the White House called them up and said, no, you're not. You've got to feed these people. And so, okay, food goes in. Now there's the fight over the Rafa gate. Again, a week ago, we were all patting each other on the back. All you and I know is what they frigging tell us, okay? And they told us there was a ceasefire, that this is the first big step towards peace. And so good. Thank God. Literally thank God for this. We prayed for this. We wanted this. Now, we all look at things differently. I'm pro-Israel.
You got these people, you know, wearing their scarf on their head. They're pro-Palestine. But whoever you are, if people stop killing each other, that's good, right? I don't care who wants to claim victory. Let's just stop killing each other. And that's good. People eat lunch. That'd be good. Let's start rebuilding. That'd be very good. But it's an odd kind of thing. The general sense is that Benjamin Netanyahu wants to restart aggressive military action in Gaza again, and that the son-in-law and the emissary, Wyckoff, or whatever's name is, they were saying, you know, calm down, calm down, and JD Vance had to go over, and he's supposedly bringing the word from on high from Trump saying, don't start killing those people again. So that's where things stand there. The two... Israeli soldiers who were killed were attacked by a Hamas splinter group. And one of the challenging things is that there are people on both sides who want the war to continue, and that it does include absolutely on the Hamas side. And so the Hamas people who are talking to the negotiators, it's hard for them to control everybody, right? And further, Israel is saying, we want the dead bodies back of the people you killed. It's hard for me to think of a dead person as a hostage, but that's how they're being seen. Okay. So we want them back. And yes, absolutely. But the deal is, Hamas is doing this thing now of we don't know where they are and we need some heavy equipment. We need some people to help us dig. And at any rate, That, it all, you look at it and you shake your head and you hope that it can work out. In the reaction to yesterday's verdict, we talked about on this show, wherein two of the officers, correctional officers charged in the death of Robert Brooks were acquitted and the third was convicted, David Kingsley of murder. As we said yesterday, there are now six former correctional officers who have been either by their own plea or by action of a jury. There are six of them who have been convicted of homicide in the death of Robert Brooks. And I believe, you know, I'm not an expert, but just watching the video, I believe that there were six correctional officers who put hands on them. And each one of them now has been adjudicated a killer. And each one of them is going to spend at least or be sentenced to at least 20 years in prison. Here's the thing about David Kingsley that makes me particularly happy that he was convicted, and he was the one convicted of murder. I've called this a lynching.
Because, you know, again, I understand that the word lynch means an awful lot. Most people today only understand it as the illegal hanging of a white or of a black man as a racist act against by white people, rather by white people. But lynching implies hanging in the modern day usage of the word. There were times in the video when you saw somebody got up with their hand into Mr. Brooks' neck and they lifted it up, and you know that that was to recreate the physiological impact of hanging. And this man, David Kingsley, was one who did that. And as he lifted up Robert Brooks by the head, Robert Brooks was being hanged. And David Kingsley did that. That murder conviction on him yesterday was 100% right. Let's get news from Joe Lasky, the Voice of the Finger Lakes. He's next on news radio, Wham, 1180.
