crunch i'm paul stevens fox news hundreds of u.s flights have been canceled or delayed today already this to of course to the ongoing government shutdown more than 1,300 delays and more than 800 cancellations charlotte's international airport jfk in new york city and atlanta's hartfield jackson international airport are among those topping flight aware's misery map This, by the way, happening with a 4% reduction in flights in 40 airports. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says that number could go up if staffing shortages continue. This shutdown doesn't end relatively soon. The consequence of that is going to be more controllers don't come to work, and then we're going to have to continue to assess the pressure in the airspace and make decisions that may, again, move us from 10% to 15%, maybe to 20. Still, a lot of travelers say it is time for Congress to reach a solution. And that's Fox's Madeline Rivera at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. And yes, today lawmakers may be trying again to cut a deal and reopen the government. It's still no unclear if both parties can make any headway. Wheels are turning behind the scenes, but it's unclear if a weekend session can reopen the government. There's a plan to run the government through the end of January. It also funds the Department of Veterans Affairs, ag programs, and Congress until next fall. It needs 60 days. Now, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer offered a straight funding bill yesterday, but he tacked on a year-long extension of money for Obamacare. Republicans flatly rejected that. Democrats also blocked for a third time a bill to pay government workers. Democrats believe that bill gave too much power to the president to pick who gets paid. Senate Republicans are hopeful they can get a test vote this weekend on the new temporary spending plan. And that's Fox's chat program on Capitol Hill. America's listening to Fox News. W. H.A.M. From the Wham 1180 Newsroom, I'm Anthony Panazowitz. A roster man has pleaded guilty to a 2024 fatal double shooting outside of a North Goodman Street bar. Hector Ramos Diaz took a plea deal on Friday, admitting to two counts of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of 49-year-old Wahid Nazario and 43-Jasquez, outside of the King and Queen Cantina back on January 30th of last year. Governor Kathy Hochul says that full November snap benefits will be available to New Yorkers starting on Sunday. This over a week after legal wrangling with the Trump administration. The government shutdown is on day 38, now the official longest shutdown in U.S. government history. And a construction worker has been identified following a crash in Parma earlier this week. And our mission on Seniors Rock Radio is to deliver interesting information that educates about and supports healthy aging. We also bring socializing into the mix with things like older adults can do for entertainment, things like that. is just that. Institute. has an event called Aging Inspired. And it's an afternoon at the Memorial Art Gallery that's packed with, I guess, conversations, they've got hands-on activities and everything that you need to celebrate creativity and aging. We love that. So we had to have that on the show today. And I hope that you'll maybe grab a piece of paper and a pen or your phone and take some information down because this stuff is good. to learn more and you can register and i'll give you that again before the show's over but that's uh you as in university our is in rochester dash aging dash inspiring dot urmc dot ed u Yeah, and, Joanna, this fun, like most fun, has health benefits. You got it. And here to tell us, yeah, here to tell us more is the co-creator of aging inspired, Dr. Carol Putgorski. Dr. Podgorski is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester and director of the Finger Lake Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease. She's also a member of the U.R.'s Aging Institute. And today we'll learn about the aging-inspired campaign that they've orchestrated. It really is an amazing community collaboration that celebrates creativity and aging. And welcome to Seniors Rock Radio, Dr. Podgorski. Thank you so much. It's a pleasure to join you this morning, Joanna and Mike. We appreciate this opportunity. So Aged Inspired is a campaign of the U.R. Aging Institute, and it harnesses the resources and talents of the university, also along with its many community partnerships. And we do that to promote vital living and older adults throughout the community through the engagement with hearts. We know that healthy aging initiatives for older adults often focus on nutrition and exercise and financial security, which we know are all important, but we also now recognize the important role that cognitively and socially stimulating activities play in vital living. So engagement with the arts, whether you're a consumer or a creator, is a powerful way to promote vitality in later life. In 2023, we explored the relationship between vital aging and music in partnership with the Eastman School of Music. Now we're shifting our attention to engage in older adults. in activities focused on visual arts. So this campaign aims to increase awareness of the value of art and to encourage people to take the next step to explore their own creativity or to find another way to engage with arts. Yeah, and a great program. And I know so many older adults, they have talents. They either haven't visited in years or maybe have found recently. What can you tell us about the Institute? That's an interesting organization.
Well, the University of Rochester Aging Institute, directed by Dr. Annette Medina Walpole, is an initiative that integrates all the aging-related strengths and expertise across the university. You know, we have so many different places. The Eastman School of Lusick, you know, we have the sciences, we have the School of Medicine. There are so many different... places that touch arts. And the university's aging institute tries to bring them all together in a way that ultimately will empower patients to achieve health and longevity. And we want to do that by promoting vitality and health and independence and engagement. So the university aging institute has three arms. One is research. where we try to understand the science and biology of aging. Then there's vital care, which is how we treat and take care of patients. That's mostly what the University Medical Center has been known for and its primary relationship with older adults has been caring for them in hospital rooms and in medical office settings. But this initiative of aging inspired comes from the vital living community, which is the arm of the institute that engages with the community and with older adults themselves to try to influence the behaviors that they can take on themselves to find a way to age in a meaningful way for themselves. Very interesting. And I have to ask, Dr. What inspired the Aging Institute to collaborate with the MAG on the aging inspired event that's on November 18th? I understand it was inspired by someone who really got into art after the age of 60. Is that right? That's right. Well, the Marinerhard Gallery is affiliated with the University. For that reason, it makes it an excellent vehicle for interfacing with the community. And as you know, the university's mission is to learn, discover, heal, freely, and make the world ever better. The MAG is a premier resource in our community for inspiring and fostering creativity, and we're fortunate that they're willing to partner with us. So one of the recent MAG exhibits from earlier this year served as a springboard for this campaign. And that was the exhibit of works by Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was an abstract painter who created her most famous works when she launched her career as an artist after the age of 60. That was after she retired from a long career as a teacher. And our aging-inspired web page, which you can also Google Aging Inspired, it's easier than that URL, has a wonderful video that captures some of Ms. Thomas' reflections on the intersection of life and creativity, the environment, and spirituality that influenced her work.
So since this exhibit, we learned more about programs and classes at the MAG and throughout other places in the community. And we had the chance to speak with artists who teach older adults and with older adults taking some of these classes. And they shared their experiences with us about how art has shaped their lives. And for example, there are some people who said that, This has just changed how they see the world, and it provides so much energy against their neurons by the rain. And the webteach has wonderful testimonials about this. That is awesome. And, you know, I think... That we get so busy with life that even if we used to enjoy coloring or doing anything with our hands, you know, as far as pottery and things like that when we were younger, this just kind of reawakens those things. I love it. And it brings people together, too. So the social aspect is awesome. You know, the conversations that people will have. And I just wanted to say, you know, this is a wonderful program. And thank you for being involved. And were you one of the creators of the program or the Institute? You know, it was actually an idea that I had because when we, when Dr. Bill Gates, Toml and I were trying to create this vital living core, we thought the community only sees the university's relationship go over, adults has taken care of them in patient offices and hospital beds, and there's so much more that we can do and so many more talents that we have. to leverage, really make an influence, you know, to make a difference in people's lives. Yeah. And it might. To me. Yeah. I'm sorry. I was going to say you might have a talent you don't even know you have unless you try it, right? That's exactly right. Yeah, so I think that's really fun. Mike, any comments? We've got a minute here. But you're muted. Whoops. You can probably hear me better with the microphone on, right? So, no, I was just going to say to piggyback on what Carol was saying. You know, I know somebody who started painting in their 90s, and it's really remarkable the talent that this fellow has and had never known. Yeah, and I know somebody who started singing in their 70s at John Roberts Wesleyan College and then went to win a contest singing Oklahoma. Amazing. He was amazing. One thing that's interesting is one of the art teachers, Denise Heikin said that she loves teaching over bills because they're more fearless. And they're afraid to make mistakes. They're just, you know, more willing to engage and take chances. That's awesome. And you know what? I said this pretty much every week. I say it. I don't care. I say it more and more because I don't care about all that stuff out there. I just want to do the right thing and concentrate on my life and my family and our friends. But anyway, that's another story. We'll continue talking with Dr. Carol Podorski about aging and the arts and tell you more about the free event this month that all adults are welcome to attend. Right after this break, don't go away.

And everyone's invited, so I suggest you get ready now to register. And Carol, tell us more about the big event coming up. That's Tuesday, November 18 at the Memorial Art Gallery. All right. Yes, happy to. So registration will start at 1230. And we will have some opening remarks, including by Mayor Malik Evans and County Executive Adam Bella. We're very excited that they'll be joining us because that gives us an idea of how important aging is to the leadership of our community. After the introductory remarks, we'll have a very brief presentation on the value of visual arts in aging. And then we will have a panel that will address engaging with visual arts through the artist's eyes. We'll look at some artist's works and we will have artists that have been in the community as artists, as teachers, and they will show some of their works and tell us what their experience of being an artist in later life has been like, and how age shapes their art. And we're also going to have people who became students later in life talk about you know how they found the energy or what was working them the momentum to step into it because sometimes starting something new is a little bit difficult so we want to hear some experiences of what made people be able to you know take that risk And then after that, we will break out of the auditorium and move into some other activities, including museum tours by some of the Memorial Art Gallery docents. And the tours will feature works by older artists. And people will also have the opportunity to see displays of works by older artists.
from the Mill Art Center and the Art Gallery's Creative Workshop. There will be resource tables and a community art project. And I forgot to mention one of the most important things. During the other session, there will be... an art teacher, Denise Hitchman, who will be leading the audience through an exercise of how to look at art and how artists create art. So it will actually be a hands-on experience that she'll be walking us through that. So I think that there's an opportunity to observe art, to create art, and to listen to other people's stories. So that's what we have planned, and then there will be a catered reception. Oh, I was just going to say you forgot one of the most important things, the catered reception. And that's usually a work of art too, right? Anyway, this is great stuff. And folks, so check it out, and I'm going to give you the... the email or the website address again now to register there's still a few tickets left but they are going fast as we said so get ready write this down ur-aging dash inspired dash urmc.du so to learn more register there it's you as in university r as in rochester dash aging dash inspired Well, that's a mouthful, but it is a wonderful event that's coming up, folks. So take advantage of this. I love that it's making the community more age-friendly, if you will. And Mike, I know we were talking about health benefits on the break, but you wanted to ask her a question about that. Yeah, we've got just maybe about half a minute left, Carol, but what are some of the health benefits of engaging with art later in life? physical benefits in terms of fine motor skills, cognitive benefits, emotional benefits, because sometimes it's an outlet to release emotions. So it reduces stress and promotes socialization. There are so many, so many, it can even been found to manage pain because of the focus. That's amazing. And I'm sorry, we've got about a minute left here, Dr. And Dr. Podgorski, thank you for being here with us today. I did want to mention that if the event does sell out because there are a few tickets left, you can still watch it when the recording is posted online. Next week, you can go to UR-aging-inspired.Urmc.edu to learn more and register, as I said. And then, again, they will have that posted next week. Thank you very much for joining us today. I hope you have a great weekend. And you can come back again and tell us how the event was. Thank you so much. Thank you. And folks, Lindsay Penrose from Benefit Reps of America is going to join us next to explain about a program that maximizes benefits using both Medicare and Medicaid. Very interesting. So stay tuned. Welcome back to Seniors Rock Radio. We are now going to hear from Lindsay. We're going to listen to Lindsay. She's with Benefit Representatives of America. It is a local family-owned business that loves our country and their clients. They've earned the trust of thousands of people, including myself, looking for support with important decisions about Medicare and health insurance. And I don't know who would want to do this alone because it's not easy. Lindsay is part of the benefit reps family and is a certified Medicare specialist licensed with all major insurance companies in the area. Lindsay assists clients with getting set up with their Medicare benefits and it's always good to see her and listen to her. Hi, Lindsay. Hi, Joanna. Thanks for having me. And hi, Mike. Good to see you, too. Hey, Lindsay, good to see you. You know, I think we're all looking forward to hearing you tell us how to maximize benefits if you have both Medicare and Medicaid. So let's start with the obvious question. If someone has both Medicare and Medicaid, how exactly would they maximize their benefits? So there's a good part of the population that falls into the category of having both. eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid. So they qualify for a certain type of Medicare Advantage plan. It's called a dual special needs plan. Dual meaning both Medicare and Medicaid, so it makes sense. But the dual special needs plans are designed for people who could use that extra help. And the reason could be because of the disability that they have, their income, their age, or any related health conditions. Well, so tell us more about what the dual special needs plan offers. I guess I'm still not sure about that. Yeah, so these dual special needs plans are offered through private insurance companies. So, you know, United Health Care. Aetna, WellCare, Excellus, everyone's heard of those companies before. And these plans, they offer additional coverage that's not available with just the original Medicare. So you still keep those Medicaid benefits, but now you just get some extras. So many know that these plans offer coverage with dental and vision and even a monthly spending credit. So the credit can be spent in a few different ways depending on the plan that is picked with that insurance company. So some examples would be healthy food items, over-the-counter products, and utility bills. So these plans have become so popular that most of the time when I meet with a client, let them know that they qualify. They already tell me, oh, my friend or my family member has this, or they've even seen those. advertisements on TV that run about these. Now, how do you know if you're eligible? I guess I'm not clear on that. If you said it, I missed it. So you have to have Medicare insurance either by being 65 and older or receiving social security disability for two plus years. So that's one side of the equation. The other side of the equation is the Medicaid. Now, Medicaid.
For this type of plan, you have to have full benefits with the state. So you have to apply through the Monroe County Department of Social Services. They would be the one to issue you this Medicaid verification. Once you have both the Medicare and Medicaid verified with the federal government and the local county office, then you come to meet. And that is where I take those benefits. I combine them together and I get you those extra benefits that you have been seeing advertised or, you know, your friend or family member has. So it sounds, Lindsay, that's important in order to take advantage of the dual special needs plan. Someone before meeting with you should already be qualified for Medicaid benefits, correct? Yes. So they have to have it set up before they come to me with that Medicaid. And right through the county office, they have to do it. And then from there, we can go and add those extra benefits. Since I'm an insurance broker, I'm contracted with the insurance companies. So I specialize in showing you those benefits that they have to offer. Now, what many people don't realize is that... once they have these two benefits of Medicare and Medicaid, they can be combined. So some people just have them separate and they're really missing out on really good benefits and, you know, the extra spending money for groceries, especially right now that can make all the difference. Yeah. Awesome. And it sounds like this is something you can help folks set up, correct? Absolutely. So since I'm licensed with these companies, I can check to make sure that your doctors accept it. And if they don't, I'll tell you that. And you don't have to take the plan, but at least we can check and then you can know. So, yeah, I can definitely help with this. And right now, with it being annual enrollment period, we have until December 7th to utilize this plan. And you can get signed up for it for the new year. That's great. Now, I'm going to go back to you, said that, you know, before you go to you, you have to go through the county office. Is that, can you tell us where that is or how did they do that? Yeah, so Monroe County is an example. You know, we're in Monroe County, but I know you have listeners outside. Yep. I know off the top of my head in Monroe County, if that's where you are listening from today, there's two offices that can assist you with getting Medicaid benefits. St. Paul Street has an office and Westfall Road. So this is also the same office that you would go to if you needed assistance with heap or, you know, when there's SNAP. It's the same office. Okay. So, yeah, social service. And you have to. I'm sorry, Lindsay. Do you have to go in person?
I don't believe you have to go in person. No. Probably not. I've had people do both ways. I've had them call the office and then the Medicaid department just mails them an application. So there's many ways to work around this. Not many people can get around easily. So especially, you know, some of our older clients. So no, I don't believe you'd have to go in person. Good. Yeah. Good. Well, that's good information. And anything else you wanted to tell the folks, because we have about two minutes here. Ooh, let me say it. One minute now. What I did want to mention was that with annual enrollment period coming to an end in less than a month here, if you've been holding off and you still need to get your Medicare taken care of, definitely give us a call. We're happy to help get you on our schedule. We are still accepting new clients at this time, so we're happy to help anyone. listeners today that need to look into their Medicare. Even if you don't have Medicaid, you just have Medicare, you can still give us a call. Thank you, Lindsay. It's always great. Folks, you can find Lindsay and the rest of the crew at Benefit Reps of America at 663-633-6-33- or they're located right on Westridge Road next to the last Red Lobster. Welcome back to Seniors Rock Radio. This is Joanna. I'm your host, and we are now joined by Peter Gordon. He's with indoor air professionals. And you know what, Peter, the cold weather is coming. It's really getting close. And that means cold and flu season. Peter, does clean indoor air air air, prevent or lessen symptoms? That same, you know, like the same as they do with air duct cleaning, with the allergies and the dust, the stuff I have. dealt with in the past and don't deal with anymore and I can't talk anymore tell us does that help so that's why we do this is for the health reasons i mean that in let me say that your duck system is the most out of sight out of mind um deterrent to your health um that we know of because it's you've got all the fine particles which are mostly the 50 million dead skin cells per person per day that um poof out every time your heat kicks on. And as we know, you know, next week we're going into the 20s and with some snow. So the heat will be on more, not just at night. Right. And so every time it kicks on, all those particles poof out at an unseen level. Of course, you see them on your furniture. And they are transport vehicles for flu and virus. So, you know, we're getting ready for Thanksgiving. And we got... you know, large gathering of people, and is everybody healthy?
