95 segmentsIt's Newman and Lonsbury. Every weeknight this time we get together. I'm not exactly 100%. I'm not exactly 100%. I've asked the bosses one day what the expectation of this job is. When you were they figure it out, please pass it along. 100%. I read one time where testosterone level was directly proportional to a man's ability to sharpen the chainsaw he owned. Well, I have been emasculated for years because in lieu of sharpening chainsaw blades to which I'm an expert at dulling. You know when it goes down to the dirt like that? That's it. Dulls them quick. Every time, that's my problem. New blade, I paid somebody to sharpen old ones in the past. I'm a skinny guy. That's like paying somebody to sleep with your wife, you know? I know it. Look, I'm telling you, my man card is porous. I'm the first one to tell you. But, yeah, that's my problem is every time I get a new chain, I just think I can saw it on the ground. Uh-huh. And I just nick the dirt in your toast after that. Yeah, yeah. And so in the past, I've, and still, I just got five new chains delivered last night. At wind event we had a couple weeks ago, I had three trees come down. We call it a storm, Betty. But you got a good deal on these chains. Yeah, smoking. Uh-huh. None heard of brand. Hopefully it's a good one. That's all right. It's big in Venezuela. But I have still MS-170. Okay. So I got a new bar, five chains, some safety glasses and gloves for about 45 bucks. That's tremendous. I thought it was a remarkable deal. They're probably crap, but is... quickly as I destroy them, I figured what the hell. Here's thing, a surprise to no one, I can outdo you in the pansy contest here, all right? That's hard, Bob. I'm coming at it with all my energy. You've got to get up early in the morning to do that. Well, here's a deal. You know, the bar and the chain. My deal is the chain comes off. And I've read the instructions. I've watched the YouTube. I've done it several hundred times, okay? And it's good for five, ten minutes, you know? You know what I'm saying? I literally have twice over the course of my life just bought a new chainsaw. Oh, geez, really? Yeah. Well, this damn thing a chain won't stay on. That's ridiculous. But really easy and convenient. I'll be honest with you. I've done it with other things. See, I've only owned one chainsaw. And it's the one I currently... Wow. And believe it or not, of all the things I've done in my life, the two things I've purchased that made me most feel like an adult was the chainsaw and my ladder.
Okay. I don't know why, but I was like, holy crap, this is a grown-up purchase. If you got a chainsaw and a ladder, you're ready to be a father-in-law. You'm saying? You are set. Give me some new ballot shoes and some high socks. Here's thing, chainsaws are wonderful, wonderful tools. And I'm fine with them and I use them for years. But every moment one is in my hand, I'm pretty sure I'm about to die. I am aware of the risk, but Bob, I get such an adrenaline rush. There's few things I do that are very masculine. So the little time I spend with the still in my hand, I sprout chest hairs, I think. Outstanding. And getting back to the sharpening, I would like to learn. I've seen people do it with the file. There's like a jig or something, and that you move the file along. And I think the files are specific to whatever chain you have, however many links, the pitch, and whatever manly terms I should know. They also make an auto sharpener. I've seen them on the shelves at Harbor Freight, and I've had it. If your auto is dull? Yeah, no, well, it's just a mechanism you... run the chainsaw through and it sharpens, you know, automatically. Those all sound wonderful. Again, I'd offer a third option. You'd go to Hep's sales in North Main Lumber and just buy a new chainsaw, okay? Gasoline or a fine electric to wall, whatever you'd like. But part of me thinks the hand file sharpening might be, like, I don't know if therapeutics the right word. The same kind of satisfaction and ease I get from like a crossword puzzle or something, video game, something like that. Yeah, I wouldn't have gone full grandma with the, Bob, it's invigorating, just like a crossword puzzle. I didn't say invigorating. I said, like, calming. But, well, calming. And also, I wonder there's that sense of craftsmanship. and the job well done, and there are 7,000 teeth in a chainsaw or whatever. When you get around the whole thing, you've got to feel pretty good about that, self-reliance. Coming across the finish line on a project like that, I think it would be very rewarding. Honey, come help me do the dishes. Can't right now, honey, I'm sharpening the chainsaw. It's just, it's similar to eating your own deer. Speaking of, which I did last night, speaking of honey. and what a pansy I am, I've had my wife put the chain back on the chain sock. Did you do it backwards? No, she's better at it than I am. What I don't do it? Which one of the two bolts gives you the trouble?
Or is it the cover? Turns out I'm... Exactly. I've got three things they have to do. Turns out I'm really good in it tightening it down. I can cramp that down there and it won't move. And real quick, earlier, you mimic the sound of your chainsaw. I think you need a little bar oil. Here's the thing. Speaking of which, every vehicle I have owned over the last 20 years, in the trunk or underneath the bed or whatever, there is a pool of oil, which is dripping bar oil from the chainsaw. Very good. I like to smell a bar oil. You ever sniffed it? Get your nose down in there next time. Save that audio. Have you ever sniffed it? I think I can use that later. That'll go very nicely in the best of real. No, there's no different smell to borrow oil, is there? I made it up. Okay. They put mint in there or something like that? You know what they do? They got a skull-scented. Wintergreen or straight? If it's wintergreen, sign me up. No, I made that up. I couldn't think of anything else to say. It was very good, though. It was very good. Obviously, we'd go for straight. There's no doubt about that. Okay, here's the thing. I, right now, I'm in a good spot when it comes to a chainsaws. I have one in the back of my truck. There's like a compartment that closes. And just in case I come across a downed ashtree in the road, I'm ready, baby. Do you heat your house with wood? Because I got to do something with all this fallen timber after my forestry project. We have a fireplace, but we don't heat the cabin with wood. Here's a thing. Those ash trees, I thought, just leave them up. But no, they die and they fall over. They are bad. Yeah. They're a problem. Us in the timber industry call them widowmakers. Widow makers. Widow makers. Ed Widowmaker, Jeremy Newman right there. It's Newman and Lonsbury on News Radio Wham 1180. NBC News Radio, I'm Scott Carr. Protests are underway in Minneapolis after an ICE agent fatally shot a woman. And if you're sitting there dreading those credit card bills after the holidays or just want to get ahead, this is the year to cash in on any gold, silver, vintage coins, or watches you've been waiting to sell because gold and silver prices have never been higher. It doesn't do you any good to have old jewelry or watches sitting in a drawer somewhere. And if you do, the best place to go is pawn pro in Syracuse. It's worth the trip to get the most for it, don't you think? Getting more for your gold or jewelry means you can really get ahead or take a nicer trip or do some home repairs. Hundreds of great people have found that pawnpro gave them more for their gold, silver, and jewelry. Set up an appointment with them. They're just a couple miles off New York State exit 35 in Syracuse. That's to exit off the throughway. Do yourself a favor. Pick up the phone and call Brian and Paul at PawnPro or go to their website to contact them. That's pawnpro.com. P-A-W-N-P-R-O.com. Remember, if you don't go, you'll never know. You've just bought your first house. It's your dream home, but maybe the roof doesn't look so dreaming. Who can you turn to? Stellar roofing. Call stellar roofing for an inspection. Welcome back. It's Newman and Lonsbury. You're the big man smart on football. What did they do to John Harbaugh? What's your story with that? John Harbaugh last evening was let go from his head coaching position after his 18th. season in Baltimore. With the Ravens. And a fairly successful career, right? Yeah, I guess there was a lot going on with that team behind the scenes that most of the country didn't know about, a lot of which has come out since last night, losing the locker room, conflict with players and coaches and stuff like that. But yeah, you don't keep a job in the NFL for 18 years because you're a tire fire. On paper.
It looked like a great run and like one of these storied coaches that will love you in Baltimore forever. Yeah, not living there. I just assumed looking at their success, especially over the last few years. This was a down year. They were plagued with injuries. But, yeah, when the alert came across my phone last night, I was like, holy crap. Now, I will say this, in the unfortunate event that something changes with McDermott's. position with the Buffalo Bills, I would have the conversation first about him coming in. There's no chance of that with McDermott, is there? No, I will not say there's no chance. You can't waste Josh Allen's career. Would it be one of the – would the owners say we're going to a Super Bowl and you're not getting us there so you're out? Or would he say, I want big money and someone else will give him – Big money? No, it would be you've had enough chances to get to the finish line and you've failed to do so. McDermott's great, especially coming off of what happened before him for 15, 20 years. But look, the tide is turned and the goal is to win the Super Bowl. And if that's your mission, how many times can you fall short? Look, Andy Reed was fired in... Philadelphia, you know, and then went and you see him when he's done. Bill Belichick, you know, had numerous head coaching positions. He got run and look what he did in New England. Sometime change is good for the franchise and the personnel or the coach. That honestly makes a lot of sense. It makes a lot of sense. When not ordering chainsaw blades through the mail. You've been scrapping lately? I have been. It's been part of my revived effort to declutter and minimize the ranch. You're downsizing. Getting some of the unnecessary stuff out of the way. I've been in my house a little over 10 years now, and since I don't think I've ever thrown anything away. And my house, when I moved in, was kind of roomy. And now it seems a little cramped. So I have been on a mission. I've taken probably four or five contractor bags to the dumpster at my buddy's business when there's room. I've recycled old electronics, TVs that I'd never thrown away, like 40-inchers and stuff, computer monitors, laptops, desktops, cell phones. Took all that or got rid of all that stuff. And what paid off was the scrap-in that I found in my garage. I had the day off one day last week, and I have a mountain of batteries in my garage. Old marine batteries, deep-cycled. I had one from my old motorhome, truck batteries, four-wheelers, just old ones I replaced and never threw away. Long story short, I took all the batteries and a bucket of brass to Metallico over in Henrietta.
The brass, I guess there's two types. Like pipe fittings or stuff like that? Yeah, and casings. Okay. Oh, like from guns. Okay, yeah. So I just had a bucket. That got me $23, $24 just for the brass. I guess there's two types, and I had a lot of the good stuff. And the car batteries, you put them on a pallet, they come with a forklift and put them on this giant scale and hand you a ticket, traded all those in and got about $145. That's tremendous. Good for you. Now I realize why you see those guys in the trucks driving up and down the roads all day because there's more money in it than I thought. I mean, you're not going to retire. Right. There's a guy I go to church with. He was out of work for a while. And he went scrapping. And that was the deal. He'd drive up and down the streets with his truck. Stuff people put out, he'd take away. It's funny. Since then, I can spot a water heater on the road from a mile away. You got some cable. I'm ready to split it. I'm ready to strip it, rather. We live on Route 36, a state highway. And there's pretty good traffic through there. And we've put stuff out and literally waited and watched through the window to see how long it takes. Oh, sure. Because it's honestly five, ten minutes. Somebody's buying, and they've got it. Whether it's scrap, an old bicycle, and something. It's like somebody's always on duty. Right. I don't know if they have an agreement between them. You got this zip code or part of this. But it's remarkable. We had neighbors who moved just a little bit ago. And so they were putting stuff out, furniture, whatever. And you had people stop, and they'd look at it kind of like during the showroom. They'd step at this side, go to the other side, look up here, throw in the back of the truck, and down the road it went. I know a guy like that, too. Well, we've spoken to my good buddy who double dips is a hoarder. Okay. He's got me trained. Like until then, when I would see stuff, whether it was old gym equipment or whatever, no matter what I see if it looks south. I would give him a call and give him the address. And then later that day, there it is on Marketplace. Well, that's the deal. Your neighbor's pretty smart in that what he doesn't need is cram in his own house. He turns around and sells and does okay. He does. He works really hard to not work. Hey, I owe him, though. He is the source of our Narcan. I carry some of my bag. He got it at the state fair. And if you run out, there's a closet full. He's got more. If you need another. Just in case. Just in case. Here's the thing. That's the lawful official nice guy scrapping. There also are folks who are pushing the carts around downtown, and maybe they're picking up stuff off the curb, but maybe some of that stuff used to be in a garage or in a backyard. I fear of that, also fear of what do you, casing, you know what I mean? Yeah. Like just observing in those guys, but also like breaking into vacant houses and construction sites.
That's a bigger problem than I think people think. There's not an empty house in this town with any copper pipe or copper wiring left in it. That's probably the first thing to go. And I wouldn't even, yeah, I think it's not exclusive to urban areas. Right. You find it just as much, if not more so, per capita. Yeah, way on the country. Here's thing, whoever you are, every time you go to your cabin in the woods and you find that it hasn't been broken into, you're a little bit surprised and relieved. Yep. Is Newman and Lonsbury on News Radio Wham 1180. Welcome back. It's Newman and Lonsbury. Corporation for public broadcasting went out of business yesterday. No more federal government money. And so the local NPR stations, whatever else like that, are a little bit more on their own. As a broadcast professional, what's your take on that whole deal? Well, I think public broadcasting had its time. I think we're in a different era as far as accessing programming, whether it be educational, entertainment, or of the news variety. Plus to... Yeah, I don't know that public money needs to go to that as much as it used to. Now, working in the industry, I may have a little bit of an axe to grind because these stations that are publicly funded, the people there have a fraction of the audience and make... multiples of the money compared to others. Right. Biggest, biggest studios, highest wages, smallest audiences. Yeah, that's what I've heard. I had a fellow that I know do some work at a public broadcasting outfit after he retired. And he said it was like stepping into the future of the industry. Everything was state of the art. You didn't have to sit there and update every computer every day. So, yeah, it's the facilities, the equipment. It's not a rinky-dink operation. Yeah. They've been living high off the hog for a long time. I think ultimately this will be good for them because it'll force them. They're going to have to attract an audience because they're going to have to sell more advertising. They're going to have to get more memberships, and that's fine. That's the way it ought to be. But to do those things, they're going to have to offer a product that's appealing to more people. Is this just the implementation of what came down several months ago? Yeah. It went into effect after the first year. I'm tired of giving them welfare money and cut that off. It's funny to say that. Over our break, I... saw a lot of marketing for fundraising for Sesame Street. And it's on HBO now.
And I was like, wait, hold up. How can you be soliciting donations if you're on a paid platform? But maybe there's more to it than I know. Yeah. Maybe the more to it is people like it when you give them money. You know what I'm saying? Whatever the deal. Even if they're a Muppet, they probably like the money. Well, in that case, let's start GoFundMe for each other. If you'd like to give money to this broadcast, you're friggin' nuts. Were you a Sesame Street person coming up? Absolutely. Okay. Yeah, Mr. Rogers was more my jam. Okay. No, I definitely Sesame Streeted. I learned many valuable life lessons from Bert Ernie, Gordon, the Puerto Rican lady. I was the same. I was the same. Who was a delight, by the way. Whose name escapes me and I hate it. Yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to think of the Spanish word for grandma. What's that? Abuela. That's a way. I had the same sort of relationship with Pee Wee's Playhouse. You know what I'm saying? Now, that show was good even if you were an adult. When Peewees was on, my stepbrother was in the demo. Right. I was a little older, but it held my attention. Especially once I learned, hey, that's Phil Hartman. You know what I mean? Especially when I learned, hey, that's Ms. Yvonne, and she's Busty. Yeah, why did I go with Phil Hartman? I don't know why. Here's the thing, when O. Pewee wasn't whacking off, he made a pretty good show. I thought it was very funny. Yeah, I did too, and I even enjoyed the movies he put out. Absolutely. I could probably quote half of Peewee's big adventure. Yeah, yeah. And here's... thing if we had lived in the age of the DVR or home video uh he'd be he'd be fine today i mean he'd still be dead but he wouldn't have that black spot on his mark oh that's right i forgot he is uh no more he passed away that's right that's too bad uh do you ever watch uh oh I can't think. It was an animated cartoon, 90s, early 2000s, a powdered toast man was on it. Renan Stimpy? Well, I didn't watch it a lot, but I respect the work of Renan Stimpy. What's the guy's, Billy West, I believe, was the talented voice actor on that. Uh-huh. Um, who had a little bit of a career in radio, so I knew him through that avenue. Outstanding. There, there are every now and again those radio guys who will get, you know, a gig where it looks like that. Yeah. Billy West was, uh, with Stern for a lot of years, um, on terrestrial radio. Uh, uh, would you, uh, lace up boots and help, uh, invade Greenland? No. Okay. No, well. Give me some context. Okay. Just for a gratuitous taking of the Greenland? I can't think how they would offend us enough. You know what to merit a war necessarily? Yeah, I don't know. When I hear all this Greenland talk, I wonder what else is going on. This is clearly meant to distract me from something.
Whether that's the case or not, that's how I feel. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think you're right. So when everybody's talking about Greenland, I'm looking around. Is something about to fall on us? Is there an Epstein photo about to hit? Push come to shove. I think who could take Denmark, right? Yeah, oh, God, we've smoked it the kingdom of Denmark. Come out is from all three angles. Oh, my. Here's what I don't, and I apologize, I'm not that bright. Denmark is, what are they known for again? Wooden shoes, Bob. See, that's where I get confused. You got the wooden shoe people, you got the tulip people, you got the one with the bikini team, and I can't... That's Sweden. Oh, Sweden? Yes. Okay. At least the poster I had. And calendar. I'm a little bit older, so I was with Sister Fawcett majors. Beautiful, faith-promoting young woman there. Yeah, I'm curious what that's all about. I hope that we can sort this out sometime soon. And I would think after what we just learned of our capabilities in Venezuela, they don't need my ass over there, lacing up boots. Wink's in those 10 dudes, a couple rolls of duct tape and baseball bats and make quick work. Here's what I think happens. You know, the Girl Scouts are rolling out a new cookie. We sent a troop of Girl Scouts over there, Greenland capitulates, and we put up the red, white, and blue. Right when they're checking the thin mint box, we surprise a tackle. Some people say, how will this help Trump win the Nobel Peace Prize? Here's how I look at it. He's already stopped eight, ten, twenty wars, okay? If he starts one or two, that just comes off his total. He still is a net positive on stopping wars, okay? You know, I never mathed that. Well, but that's a good angle. Proud to serve. And, you know, often in many things, it's a numbers game. That's 100%. How many bullies do we have compared to how many they have? That's Jeremy Newman. This is News Radio Wham 1180. The Trump administration's adding 25 new nations to a list requiring travelers to post bonds before entering the U.S. The State Department said Tuesday there's now 38 countries subject to the requirement, most of them in Africa. Venezuela is one of the new countries added to the updated list which goes into effect January 21st. Travelers from those countries who are eligible for a visa could be required to post a bond of up to $15,000. The windows now open for eligible... Amazon customers to file a claim against the online retail giant. Matt Mattson has that. Amazon settled a 2023 antitrust lawsuit with the FTC for $2.5 billion in September, alleging the company coerced millions of customers into enrolling in prime subscriptions. The FTC says the agreements were made egregiously difficult to cancel. Amazon has denied the wrongdoing but settle the lawsuit anyways. Customers have 180 days to file their claims and are eligible for a maximum of $50. The governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, is laying out initiatives that will crack down on ghost guns ahead of her state of the state address next Tuesday. Natalie Migliore's in New York. Kathy Hochul says the bill would create criminal penalties for those who make and sell untraceable guns, which can typically be made or altered using a 3D printer.
The measure would also require manufacturers to design guns so that they can't be easily modified into machine guns. We will not allow do-it-yourself gun traffickers to convert their homes into unsanctioned firearm factories. Governor Kathy Hochul is touting her commitment to getting guns off the streets saying shootings dropped 60% last year from when she first got into office in 2021. The NFL is seeing its highest regular season viewership since 1989. The Sports Business Journal says games saw an average of nearly 19 million viewers in 2025. That's a 10% jump from 2024. Scott Carr, NBC News Radio. As we welcome the start of a new year. News is already happening. So we're off to a busy start. Fast. Whatever is next in Venezuela. Keep up the events of the day. Large amounts of oil. The trial of Nicholas Maduro. Now you know. News Radio. Wham 1180. Jason Toomey here, owner of Big Ash Fireplace and Stoves. We're stoked to heat up your world. We're a family-owned, full-service, Rochester Harstor. It's Newman and Lonsbury. We're honored you are with us. You, sir, more than anybody I know, have closely and faithfully followed the career of that gentleman jelly roll. I have. I'm a big fan of Jelly Roll. I like redemption stories. I like comebacks. I like underdogs. And that guy on those three and many other playing fields has spiked the ball and danced in the end zone. Yeah. He went to prison as a young man and he earned his place there. He deserved to be there. And most of his teens were spent incarcerated in juvenile facilities. Jelly Roll announced Monday that he is. now lost without medication just with lifestyle change diet and exercise he has lost 275 pounds that's amazing that is amazing i mean that's an obese person in and of itself right ending height i'm not trying to be ugly but that is uh a massive amount of poundage right right we wonder about the skin obviously Oh, I'm sure it's like a winged bat. Yeah. Or flying squirrel. And here's a thing to, God bless him. He's always been beloved since he became a public figure. But with the weight off, and he may still have more to go, he looks like a completely different man. And also, he looks like, often when people lose weight, to me, they look sick, right? Sure. He looks handsome. This is really working for him. Well, I mean, it's not like he was that high up on the scale to begin with. But yeah, that's, uh, um... It makes me think he's going to remove his face tattoos as well for similar reasons. Yeah. He's, you know, he's handsome now.
He's like a phoenix risen from the ashes. His old life is behind him. He's got his teeth fixed. He's got his record fixed. The governor of Tennessee, I believe, a couple weeks ago. He issued him a pardon. So he's turned around all these things. And he's talked in interviews before, most recently with Joe Rogan about the state he was in when he got those face tattoos. And he said, you don't do stuff like this unless you have anger, fear. or these other emotions, but when you boil them down are really the same thing manifested differently. So part of me wonders if he will have the face tattoos removed. He used to tell his daughter and her friends that he drew them on every morning just to make them smile and ask questions. Is that right? So it's something I think he's always had a level of regret for. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But once you're committed to that, you know. as his track record, he went full throttle. 100%. Here's the thing you can do. I hear there's like a face cream that's somewhat oranges you can put on, and maybe you could mask that. Or grow your hair long enough and just swoop it down as an optical illusion. Last question on Jellyroll, speaking of course to Jeremy Newman, he and I here every weekday evening. What was the turnaround point for him? Where did he say, this is not who I want to be, I want to be a better man? According to him, he was in the prison there close to Nashville, right there on the Cumberland River, I believe. And he was in his cell. He had gotten a Craig Morgan CD and was listening to Craig Morgan's song Almost Home, which is a redemption type song. And he kept listening to it over and over. It was his daughter's birthday that day. He had had a phone conversation with her, and it just hit him like a ton of bricks. He said, realizing how absent he was. And he wasn't meeting the standards of a good father. And he made the decision in that moment that day, listening to that CD after that phone call, to start a new streak. And he says it's not flipping a switch. You just have to take a different approach and be consistent with it. You get a couple days under your belt. Then you get a couple weeks, months, years, and that's truly when the transformation is submitted. That's outstanding. Yeah, it's outstanding. He got a new job, by the way. What's he doing? He's going to be part of the Star Search. reboot. It's coming to Netflix. There's been a lot of those over the years. With the same name? Yeah, Star Search. But the thing is Netflix makes you think it's going to work big. It's going to be Jelly Roll, Sarah, Michelle Geller, and John Legend's wife. Chrissy Teigen. Okay. They're going to be the judges. Anthony Anderson is going to do the Ed Linda McMahon host role. Uh-huh. And January 20th, first episode will hit Netflix. That'll be something to see. Back in the day, that show launched a lot of people before the internet and marketing advances. Absolutely, absolutely. Here's a thing. If you're with a woman...
And I mean with a woman. If. And after, when, eventually, you know, when you're with a woman and you part ways, and she goes around telling people you got like some big giant, you know what. Bird?
