73 segmentsHey, it's Jen Hatmaker. Here's what I've learned in midlife. Joy isn't the reward you earn after all the work is done. Joy is the work. That's what this new series on For the Love is all about. The sacred yes. It's choosing delight, rest, and pleasure on purpose. Because saying yes to yourself, that's the thing that finally lets you fill your table with everybody else. Come find your sacred yes with me. Follow and listen to For the Love wherever you get your podcasts. We continue with you here on News Radio, WRVA, the big story of the day, of course. A woman is dead in Minnesota after being shot by ICE officers, and that's about the only thing I think everyone could agree on this morning. An officer involved shooting took the life of a woman. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Period, full stop. About everything else after that is going to be what lens and which side of the aisle you want to stand on. I want to talk about a lot of this this morning here on Richmond's morning news. First segment, we talked about it this morning. Bottom line is, if police officer gives you a lawful order. As a citizen, it's your responsibility to follow that lawful order whether you want to or not. And when they approach your car and they say, please give me your license, please get out of the car. When they give you that order, I don't want to get out of my car. I don't want to get pulled over. I don't want to give you my license. But you need to follow their lawful instructions. And the one thing you don't do is when an officer approaches your car and asks you to get out is to punch it and try to drive away. To move that car forward, now you... have escalated this to the point of I'm not sure what's going to happen next. So number one is I hope everybody has that conversation with their children, especially as they get to junior high teenagers and even young adults reminding them. And I think quite honestly adults need to be reminded of this. We don't get to selectively choose which laws we're going to follow and which ones we don't. Which brings me to my next point again. You want to comment on any of this. I'll take your telephone calls 833, 804, 1140, and you can use that James River Air text line to join us as well. But right now there's a lot of anger, and there's a lot of people frustrated right now, and there's a lot of people that aren't happy with ice. Here's, you have cut 13. Here's Governor Walls talking about he gets to what you're feeling in your gut right now. Look at this, I feel your anger. And I will tell you this, when I'm angry, I don't make a lot of great decisions. I don't make a lot of great decisions when I'm angry. The mayor of Minnesota is saying this, he's calling ICE out, and he's calling all of this out, and he's posting up on him. Here's the mayor again in his expletive-filled press conference yesterday. They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly. That is . Okay. Then you have Jim Jordan on the other side, Congressman, and here's what he had to say yesterday. When you docks, when you harass, when you interfere with federal law enforcement doing their job, when you're a sanctuary jurisdiction, you create this environment where it's just explosive. So really, what is it?
What is it? On one side they say, no, this is BS. The other side saying, hey, wait a minute, they're following the law. We have a constitutional republic. We are a republic. I know everybody wants to go, this is a threat to democracy. Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. You know what the threat to our former government really is? People that have decided for some reason that they don't have to follow all of our laws. Follow me here. For the same Democratic leaders that say Donald Trump is a threat to democracy, and they're actively trying to fight him because he's a threat to democracy. What are you doing? The ones that are screaming the loudest about threat to democracy, Chuck Schumer and the rest. Then you go out and you vilify the ICE officers for what? For enforcing the law of the land? And here's where people are getting frustrated. You see, the media has a lot to do with this. Our leaders have a lot to do with this. Our institutions have a lot to do with this because we haven't stood up or said anything. I use that term you promote what you permit. And we've permitted them to say the same lie over and over and over and over and over again. And the more you hear that lie and the more that you hear it on TV, radio, blogs, and all the rest of social media, you begin to believe that lie. The ICE officers are Gestapo when they're disappearing people off the street. They're kidnapping people, and brown people live in fear. Tell you what, this brown person doesn't live in fear. I've got through more ICE checkpoints than probably most people coming back and forth for Arizona. I've never lived in fear of ice. Stay in the same hotels as ICE. I've stayed in Hampton Inns where ICE officers were in the room next to me, and I didn't feel like they were going to bust the door down. So what is really going on here? It's a soft nullification of laws that they just don't like. So instead of going out there and changing the law, Chuck Schumer, you vilify the ICE officers and you start to decide, well, I know we have laws on the books, but I just don't feel like we need to follow that one because I don't think it's moral just and I just don't feel like following that law. So which is a real threat to democracy? Those that want to scream about the threat to democracy? are those that don't want to follow the laws of the land, the laws of this republic has set forth. Boy, wouldn't that be nice if we got to decide which laws I want to choose to follow today and which ones I don't? Hmm. We have the Immigration and Nationality Act, U.S. Section Code 8, that prescribes all these things that we're asking these ICE officers to do. But then some people will say, these ICE officers are horrible, they're Gestapo. I heard the racist comments this weekend that all these Hispanic ICE officers are only doing it because they need money, as if these ICE officers that look like me aren't patriots and want to uphold our law and swear to uphold the Constitution and the laws of this country to be peace officers. But that's nullification. That's a soft nullification of the rules of the land. That's telling people, you know what, you have this law, but we don't have to really follow it. And the people that are enforcing it, they're evil because this rule, this law we have is unjust and we're just not going to pay attention to it. Sanctuary cities, we're not going to help you detain people here that don't belong here that are illegally because, yeah, U.S. Code 8, I just don't feel like following that today.
Wouldn't it be grand if I got to decide which laws I want to follow and which ones I don't? And if you allow that to happen, then what you're doing is you're starting to nullify the laws of land and what are you going to have? Anarchy. Because let's say I decide tomorrow, you know, that whole IRS thing, I don't like it. I think it's, I think it's theft, it's seizure, taking my personal property and making me pay. I just don't like that law. I think I'll just stop paying my taxes. How would that go over? You know, that whole thing about being able to import cocaine and heroin? I don't like that law either. I think I'll just break that one because I find that to be unjust because they're saying I can't do something that I really want to do. How many other laws do you have that you don't like that I'll just decide, ah, today I'm not going to follow them. You know, the ICE officers are out there holding up the law of the land. I don't like that. I think I'm going to go get in their way. I think I'm going to go, I think I'm going to go protest. I think I'm going to go tell everybody they're unjust, immoral, and I'm going to tell everybody what bad people they are. So the same party that declares Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. They don't repeal the law. They don't change in our Congress. They don't win elections to rewrite the policy. Instead, they make the enforcement impossible. They include dashboards to track ICE, the rhetoric that calls for lawful arrest kidnapping and encouraging people to interfere with law enforcement. That's what that dashboard does. It tells everybody, we're going to track these Gestapo, and we're going to actually have Congress do this because they're so bad we need to keep an eye on them because they're doing evil things. Sorry, that's not democracy, that's selective, obedience to the laws that I want to follow, and it's a soft nullification in undermining the ones that I don't. It's nullification by behavior. Federal law exists, but only if it's approved by my local ideology. Country doesn't survive like that. So ask yourself, when you see these people standing out there screaming about ICE enforcing the law that's on the books, U.S. Code 8, and they're screaming out there saying, no, you can't do this, stop this. What are they really saying? They're really saying, I just don't feel like, I just really don't feel like following that law today. And I'm going to choose which laws I want to follow and which ones I don't. And then I'm going to stand there and scream about a threat to democracy. Peacefully. Peaceful threat to democracy. Yeah, the other part, peaceful threat to democracy that I'm going to stand there and interfere with ICE agents trying to do their sworn job and then call them racists and protest and actually stand there and lay hands on them. We actually had a member of Congress, Monica McKeever. who put her hands on ICE officers. And she's sitting in Congress right now. If that doesn't tell you what a lot of people want to do, which is vilify them to the point where we just stop paying attention to some laws because you don't like them. You don't like the law of the land. You don't like the Immigration and Nationality Act. You don't like Section 8 of the U.S. Code. Then go to Congress and change it.
Not following that letter of the law means that you've just decided I'm only going to follow the laws that I want to follow. And I guess there's rules for thee. You don't have to follow that law, and there's rules for me. I've got to follow everything else. And you can arbitrarily decide today which laws we're going to follow and which ones were not. I want to get your thoughts on that. Break that down a little bit more. Does that make total sense? 833-804-1140. I'll take your telephone calls and your text message. 833-804-1140, the number for you to join us. All right, coming up on the program, we'll have more conversations about this. I'm going to talk with Jim Gilmore this morning on the program about what's going on. and what we've seen, and we'll get his updates on some international action as well. And again, your telephone calls are always encouraged. 833-804-1140, 833-804-1140. Coming up in just a bit, we'll hear from Michael Greer Financial Group.com. One of the things I'm keeping the eye on are the oil futures. 30 million barrels are going to be brought to the U.S. refined down in the Gulf? What's that going to do for U.S. oil reserves? How are we going to refill that oil reserve petroleum out in Taft, California? See, Michael Greer looks at that because it affects the market, it affects your investment, and affects your retirement. He's a fiduciary. He stays on top of all of those things. That's what we talk to him every morning. He keeps an eye on how economics affect your retirement. Do you have somebody looking out for your money? You worked hard for it? Who's working hard to make your money work for you? If you can't instantly answer that, then you need to call Michael Greer today, 804. 427-8784, 804-4-4-27784. Find them online at greerfinancialgroup.com. It's news radio, WRVA. I'm Rich Herrera. Text messages coming in hot and heavy this morning are the James River Air text line 833, 804, 1140. This is a good one. Hey, this is Tammy from Midlothian. Hello, Tammy from Middletian. Rich, it's called Cafeteria Citizens. Like, what? I've never heard that before. She said, they pick off the menu, the laws they want to follow. I'll have... One of these. You know, I don't like that, so I'll do this. I'll have one of Section A, one off of B, and I'm not going to take anything off of C because I don't like ice. I like that. Cafeterious citizens. Tammy, you are brilliant. All right. Isn't that? So my friend California Joe and Chesterfield says, I say this is an immigrant from Nicaragua and now a naturalized citizen. Why is it all these people? want to leave their lawless country, want to come to a country that has stability and opportunity and again want to go back to lawlessness. Why do you come here? You come here because it's stable. And what are you trying to do? De-stabilize it. Either we follow all the laws and we don't. Either we have a constitutional republic with laws that we all follow in a society that's orderly or we don't. Take your pick. Some people are. I don't.
This country is we're standing for. Our Constitution, our laws are we're standing for. You tell me if you agree, disagree. 833, 804, 1140. And I don't get to pick which ones I choose to follow. That's not how it works. Do you agree, disagree? 833, 804. 1140. We'll continue with you. It's news radio, WRVA. 34. On Thursday, January 8, 26, this is Richmond's morning news on the voice of Virginia News Radio, WRVA. You go to work today, it's the thing that everyone's going to be talking about what happened in Minnesota, and there's lots of different opinions that are flying around. So trying to just take all the emotion out of this. Take all the talking points and the toxicity and the finger pointing and just boil it down to the facts so you can make your own decision, your own judgments, and have everything you need to be informed of what really is going on. Part of it is, listen, from the very get-go, I said this right off the bat. The one thing that everybody should be able to agree on is if the police give you a lawful order, you follow it. You don't get to choose when you want to follow the police and when you don't, and you certainly don't get to drive off towards an officer when you decide that you don't want to follow that law that you don't feel like following their instructions because you want to nullify, you don't think that's a just law, so I'm just going to follow my own laws.
There's a lot of things that broke down in Minnesota, and a lot of people are pointing fingers. A lot of people are trying to use it politically. Let's be candid. A lot of people are just angry and frustrated, and they're lashing out. There's people who are doing all the above. Could the officer have, and I heard Hakeem Jeffries last night, well, just pull the, he should have shot out the tires. It doesn't work that way. You've got a split second to make that choice that's either life or death. It's that quick. We watch television and we, oh, you pull your gun out and you decide, you ain't. By that time, you're dead. Was the officer in the right position? I think you can, I think this would be fair to say. Did those federal officers do a traffic stop correctly? Probably not textbook and they probably don't have a lot of experience at that because their job. is to apprehend people that are here illegally. They're not here to do traffic, to do crowd control and things like that. They do traffic stuff. But at that point, as soon as she puts that car and drive, she puts everything in a chaos and you don't know what's going to happen next. Could the ICE officer have done something else? Yeah. In a split second, it's hard to have a... backseat driver tell you, no, no, no, no, do this, do that. And as the car is lunging, you have to decide what you're going to do. And he made that split-second decision. And for anyone to stand there and say, no, I've seen, Jacob, I've seen the videos, really? But the lack of leadership is what galls me. The lack of leadership that we've seen in Minnesota really galls me. and I'm going to ask you. I don't want to point fingers, but I am going to ask you this. I will ask you, oh, by the way, the other thing we talked about this morning is Sanctuary Cities create chaos. So here's what happened. I love this. Chuck Schumer is saying this yesterday. Well, they're over there just operating independently and running around in our cities. Yeah, why? Because Sanctuary Cities refuse to cooperate with... federal law enforcement. Here's what normally would happen in cities where they cooperate. The feds have their own radio system. Local police have their own radio system. The local police... Hey y'all, I'm Maddie. And I'm Poodle. And together, we host the podcast Reality Gays. We are two ridiculous homosexuals who love nothing more than talking about reality television and tearing in a new one. So whether it's 90-day fiancé, love is blind, love after lockup, or any other trash TV show about lonely hearts looking for love. Your gay besties got you covered, y'all. New shows every week. Follow and listen to Reality Gays wherever you get your podcast.
We'll assign a officer to ride and be part of the group with the feds. That officer will tell everybody on a tactical channel, you know, one out of 12, one out of 12, we're here at this, we have these many officers, this is what we're doing. Code 4 out. Everybody knows what's going on. Something happens, something pops off. Hey, we need help backup over here to all local enforcement to help them when things start getting out of control. Happens every day in America. Every day in America, this happens except these sanctuary cities. So for Chuck Schumer and all the rest, these officers are just running around going in our cities and they're not even checking in with us. You're the ones who say in your sanctuary cities, you don't want to work with them, and you're not going to cooperate. The hypocrisy of this is just absolutely galling to me. But here's the thing that really I don't get. If you're a Democrat that was a New Deal FDR Democrat, JFK Democrat, I want to ask you this question in all earnest. It's not a gotcha question because I really want to know. Here's Jacob Frey, the mayor of New York, and you've heard of all morning long. Get the blank out of our city. He went on CNN that night with the police chief, and he was asked, do you regret what you said? Was it said in the heat of the moment, or do you really feel that way? This is a little extended clip, but I want you to listen. I've seen a lot of Republicans here in Washington criticizing those comments, saying that you're escalating tensions with that. Can you respond to them and what do you say to them tonight, people who criticize those comments? I'm so sorry if I offended their Disney princess ears, but here's the thing. If we're talking about what's inflammatory, on the one hand, you've got someone who dropped an F bomb, and on the other hand, you got someone who killed somebody else. F bomb, killing somebody. I think the more inflammatory action is killing somebody. And so, once again, let's be real and just honest and straight up about what's happening here. This is not okay. The way they're coming into cities, not just Minneapolis, but around the country, is not okay. Whether you're a Democrat or a Republican, you should understand the importance of constitutional law enforcement. You should understand the importance of not discriminating. based on race and randomly plucking people off the street because they're Somali or Latino. And especially from what we've seen, you should also understand the importance of de-escalating tense situations, not killing people and yanking out a gun. And so, again, I'm not going to preempt the investigation. It is important that we do that. And at the same time, you know, you want to make a big deal about an F-bomb. Let's make a big deal about our Constitution. I think that's probably the better route. I would absolutely agree with everything you say that, sir. It is constitutional. So you tell me ICE officers enforcing the Immigration and Nationality Act, please explain to me how that is unconstitutional. Coming into our cities is not okay. So again, that soft nullification that you're proposing of, well...
We'll follow some laws, but others we're not going to. And the ones we don't like, we're just not going to follow, and we're going to tell people you're not allowed to come into our city. And then his idea that they're just snatching up random people, I've never been detained by ICE. I've been stopped. They've looked through my car when I go through a border checkpoint. But here's a deal. I don't live in fear of ice rounding me up because I'm Latino, because I'm an American citizen. That's one thing, again, have you ever heard Jacob Frey say American citizens living in fear of ice? Who would live in fear of ice, by the way? People that are here illegally without permission. And then when he talks about de-escalating, Sanctuary cities cause this to happen. Because if you had the local police cooperating with federal law enforcement enforcing constitutional law, U.S. Code, not let me make sure I'm right with my words. If you had local municipalities cooperating with ICE as they enforce federal law, U.S. Code, not the Constitution, U.S. Code. You know who would just be able to de-escalate it? It would be the officers from local Minneapolis police there to crowd control, show of force, not backing off, not empowering the protesters. By taking the police out, local police out of it, you give... a tacit approval for the protesters to come out there because if the local cops aren't going to show up and the Gestapo's here and they're disappearing people, then I'm going to stand up to it. So if you want to talk about de-escalating, your lack of support encourages the escalation of this. Mayor Frye? But I do want to get to this. Do I have time for this? Do I have time for Hakeem Jeffries? Let me play Hakeem Jeffries for you. And I want to ask you, does Hakeem Jeffries represent your point of view and where you come from today? If you're a Democrat, here's a Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, ask yourself, is this my guy that I would, that I align with? Take a listen. There is no evidence that has been presented to justify the shooting of an unarmed woman resulting in her unnecessary death. Kristi Noem, the so-called Secretary of Homeland Security, is a stone-cold liar who has zero credibility on this issue or on any other issue. And what we need, as I believe the governor has indicated. is a full and complete investigation. This rogue ICE agent who pulled the trigger should be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law, including for demonstrating a depraved indifference to human life. Did you hear him kind of nullify? Kristi Noem, so-called, delegitimizing her.
Rogue agent, delegitimizing them. Again, you want to, there's a perfect example, soft nullification. You say it's, oh, Kristian Homes, so-called, rogue officer, the more you repeat that, you see the playbook now. Now that you take all the emotions out of it, you see the playbook, it's pretty easy to poke through. what he's saying, but I would like to know if, and I know we have some Democrats that listen to the program and I thank you because I want to hear from all sides. When you hear him say that, does that align with who you are? Please let us know. James River Air text line, 833, 804, 1140. 833, 804-1140. Coming up, we'll talk with Governor Jim Gilmore. As a former Attorney General, I want to get his thoughts on this, and as the leader of this Commonwealth. What are leaders supposed to do in situations like this? We'll do that coming up here in just a minute. Hey, let me remind everybody that... If you want to get 2026 going, how about getting yourself going? Coming up, we'll talk with our former governor and attorney general. Jim Gilmore, our guest here on News Radio, WRVA. Lots of text messages coming in. Several text messages, and I'm not tooting my own horn. They're saying thanks for taking all the emotions out of this and just kind of laying it down because when you hear some of this stuff, you just get so upset. You're Hakeem Jeffries and Jacob Frye when he's, get out, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank. You match, you mirror their... anger. You mirror their frustration. You know what's kind of funny? I rely on sports lot because I think there's life lessons that you can find in everything. And there's this thing called the Methini Manifesto. Mike Mathini was a catcher for the St. Louis Colonels. Don't worry, I'm not going to go all sports on you. But it's a life lesson than I've learned.
He talked about working with kids. And if you've ever tried to teach your kid to do something and they don't get it right the first time, you see them get frustrated. And then you get frustrated because you see the person you love so much being frustrated. So you mirror what they did. But what we don't understand is... That person, that kid that you're trying to teach, loves you just as much, and they get frustrated, and then they see you're frustrated, and then it adds to their frustration, and they get even more upset. So what happens to you? You see how your child is so distraught. It brings up your level of frustration and anger, and then she sees that, and then she gets more, and you just, you marry each other, and you amplify what goes on. In a lot of ways, that's how our society is. I see Jacob Frey and I, and I'll tell you this, I watched it live and he says, get the F out. I'm like, what? And I yelled at the TV. And it brought my leveling of anxiety up. But I saw Tim Walz and I'm like, you idiot, I yell at my TV the same way you do. And what happens is we get so upset, we don't really listen and decipher what they're saying, and all we do is get upset. And if you listen to what they actually said, you'd look at them and go, wow. You have no idea. And you'd be able to explain that instead of just getting so upset that you want to go, so hopefully we took the a out of your morning. Coming up, we'll have Governor Jim Gilmore. But before we do that, we'll give you the Richmond Morning News Brief for rundown. All right here on News Radio, WRVA.
