I'm Linda Lopez and here are today's top local stories. Despite the massive snowstorm, school was back in session this morning for New York City public school students. But there was a lot of pushback from parents. Here at PS11, for example, attendance was between 60 and 70% on the day after the storm for in-person learning. But Lisa, a parent who says it was quite an ordeal to get to school, wished it had stayed remote. Because the sidewalks are all icy. It's very dangerous. And a lot of teachers live in New Jersey and with the mass transit. I mean, even this morning, we took the subway and the trains were even delayed. But this mom of a third grader, glad, back in class. It's very important because they need that structure. They need to be around their peers. Honestly, opinion among parents seem to be pretty much split. Glenn Shuck, 10-10 wins. 92-3 FM. PS-11, Hale's Kitchen. The city has been hiring snow shovelers to help dig out from the more than two feet of snow that was dumped on some parts of our area, including out on Staten Island. That's where we find our Maryland Buckley. The snow has turned to ice at this point, but there's still a whole lot of shoveling to be done. So we just try to make it as safe as possible to help the sanitation guys that do the snowing. Steven and Felicia, one of the many people, helping the Department of Sanitation. The Lord God willing, you know, we're getting it done. You're all about being patient. That's all. So we got to do. I'm tired of snow. I don't want to snow on Christmas. It's broke. Even younger New Yorkers getting involved, like this mom who dropped off her 18-year-old son. Just saw it on the Instagram. They say they are looking for 1,800. Here in Staten Island, the shoveling is far from over. Mary Lynn Buckley, 10-10 wins on 92, 3 FM in Toad Hill. Some areas of Long Island from that blizzard yesterday got some record-breaking snowfall. Our Sophia Hall is in Patchhog where they got more than 30 inches of snow. I love the snow. I just got back from Utah. I just brought it back with me for you guys. I'm a snow enthusiast. But just a block away, another man who has lived in North Patchhog since 2009 has a different view of the 30 inches of record snowfall. Are you tired of the snow? Of course.
Ready to move. Are you moving? Not yet, but thinking about it. And where would you move to? South, someone in Carolina. The plows buried in some driveways. It's just frustrating when they look at you and they just plow you in and they just say, oh, well, we're making the road safer. But I have a one-year-old child. What if something went wrong? Sophia Hall, Tenton wins on 92-3 FM on Long Island. An administrator at a school in Queens is now under arrest and facing federal charges of coercing interstate prostitution. Prosecutors say Bonding, an assistant principal at PS16 in Corona, had a list of clients, the type of sex act, and the amount of money paid for each meeting. Ing himself told federal agency was the manager for a woman who performed in porn videos and that he made arrangements for her to visit with fans in New York. Texts show Ing pretending to be the woman while... communicating with clients and saying the cost would be $2,000 an hour. Prosecutors say those text messages go back five years. Mack Rosenberg 10-10 wins on 92-3 FM. An investigation is underway this morning after a man was found dead in the snow outside a Long Island housing complex. Workers in Deer Park were shoveling in front of the building on Park Center Drive when they discovered the body. Suffolk County Police say at this point they don't believe the death was criminal in nature, but that it was likely a medical event. And they say that the man was not outshubbling snow when it happened. An autopsy will determine the exact cause. of the man has not been released yet pending notification of the family. It's their latest attack on sanctuary policies, the Justice Department suing New Jersey, accusing the state of interfering with federal immigration enforcement. Other cities, like here in New York, in Minnesota and Los Angeles, face similar lawsuits. New Jersey's targets a new executive order signed by Governor Mikie Sherrill, which the DOJ says limits how ICE agents can operate on state property. Attorney General Pam Bondi claims New Jersey's sanctuary policies obstruct federal law and could endanger public safety. In response, Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport called the legal challenge pointless and says the state will continue to ensure the safety of immigrant communities and looks forward to defending the governor's executive order in court. Two teenagers and a 23-year-old woman are now facing murder and a slew of other charges after a botched robbery of a BMW in the Bronx. It happened back on February 13th, just after midnight. According to the Daily News, the two 18-year-olds, Wanderlin Mateo and Darlene Sanchez, plus two other accomplices, allegedly left 23-year-old Angelic Encarnacion's apartment with guns to approach a BMW two doors down. The victim, 26-year-old Amir Ahmad, was sitting in the car with a passenger when the four pulled out guns and ordered them out of the car. But instead, Ahmad tried to hit the gas to drive off, but he was shot. He was rushed to the Kobe Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, but sadly he could not be saved. Mateo, Sanchez, and Incarnacion were all arrested. The two other suspects are on the loose. The three are now facing murder, manslaughter, and robbery charges.
as well as criminal possession of a weapon charges. Faculty at NYU may be going on strike as soon as Monday. They've overwhelmingly voted to authorize the walkout. The union representing more than 900 non-tenure track professors hasn't officially set a strike deadline that gives NYU negotiators time to work out a deal for a contract. This would actually be the first contract the non-tenured professors would have since they unionized in February of 2024. The union is making demand, say, that they say, would address disparities. between them and their tenured colleagues regarding compensation, job security, workload, AI, and academic freedom. NYU leadership released a statement. They're saying the union hasn't agreed to an impartial mediator and that they've made good faith offers and that the union is risking disrupting thousands of students' education to gain leverage at the bargaining table.
