Well, some things are a bit up in the air as we start our week on this Monday. April the 20th year of our Lord, 20th, just how are things going in the Strait of Hormuz? Well. Kind of sort of not sure. How are the peace talks coming? Well, America's ready to go talk. Pakistan's ready to hear the talks. Iran, maybe not so.

A couple of really, really big wins in NBA NHL playoffs for cities of your morning show interest. How about those Buffalo Sabres and their fans going crazy yesterday? Sabers 4-3 over the Bruins. They lead their playoff series one game to nothing. And it was all Thunder and OKC 11984 as the Thunder and the Sabres big winners of your morning show interest. And the tragedy over the weekend, eight children in all. including seven fathered by the shooter, dead in a mass shooting in Shreveport. We have identified the shooter, the father, if you will. Roy O'Neill is here with the very latest on this shooting. Roy, good morning. Yeah, good morning, Michael. Just every detail seems to be worse than the other. The 31-year-old suspect in this case went to a home where he is accused of shooting his wife, then went to a different home where he shot the children and a woman who's been described as his girlfriend. The brother-in-law of the suspect says apparently it was the first woman's request for a divorce from Shamar Elkins that may have led to this rampage. The suspect himself does have a criminal history, a shooting that happened back in 2019, but he also served in the National Guard for seven years until August of 2020, though not deployed with them. Didn't have an extensive criminal record. No other arrests for domestic violence there in his past. So the investigation is still in early stages. But again, the kids that were killed here range in age from three to 11 years old. So. When you say it has everything, boy does it. I mean, this could be mental illness. This could be drugs. This could be past of violence. The military, not so much, you know, usually when there's PTSD or military service in wartime somewhere. I mean, this was a guardsman. But you got guns. You got mental illness. It's got everything. But what often gets lost is the eight children lives that were lost, seven of which taken by their very own father. There just are no words. Three boys, five girls, just awful. And again, you're trying to wrap your head around it. And there just is no logic to it. You know, after the shootings, he carjacked a vehicle, was chased, I think, to the different parish there in Louisiana, was finally stopped and shot and killed by police. You know, they're trying to talk to people that live with them and other extended family members and neighbors to... see if you can somehow apply logic to this. Yeah, any social media presence or anything we can learn from that. Obviously, when the suspect is dead, there's not a whole lot you can...

get from the suspect on their mo I mean we think we know the motive through the brother-in-law but to snap at this level and to take the innocent children originally I thought maybe in when because he hijacked the car to get away and then we thought that there were shootings at multiple locations in the end the multiple occasions turned out to be he started with his wife and then went to the children and then on high-speed chase got killed right Right. Yeah, three different locations. The kids and the girlfriend apparently were at a different house. And then, as you said, the chase and the shootings ended. First the penny. First the penny. Now the nickel could be next. Oh, that's the tease. Do we want to do it? Go, let's do it. All right, sure. You know, one of the arguments has been that we need to stop production of the penny because it costs so much more to make a penny. Right. Actually cost. So if you think that's bad math, you should see the nickel. Any idea how much it cost to make a nickel? Well, I'm trying to remember just off the, because I'm trying to think the penny ended up being, was it 2.3.69 cents. Okay, so it was 3.5 cents to make something worth a penny. I'm guessing the nickel somewhere around 12 cents. 13.78. Wow, I was close. So you'll lose nearly nine cents for every nickel you make. Why can't, all right, and then should we just do it now so we don't do it a month from now? And do we go on to the quarter from there? I mean, is this level of inflation and debt make any change worth keeping or rounding off? Yeah, I know. Do we just go down to the dime? And then would that be next? At least the dime is smaller and thinner. So at least it must be cheaper to make than a nickel. But yeah, you know, and then as we move to more plastic anyway, I mean, who wants coins rattle in their pocket all day? You know, I never have any cash on me. I never have any change on me. My grandfather was famous for, he'd have his hand in his pocket and he'd be jiggling the change. But, you know, that's just, I don't know. At some point, obviously, currency isn't anything. We're all walking around with, by and large, let alone change. Some of this doesn't make sense. One will they make a decision on the nickel so I can let you go? No, it's just chatter right now. But as a former bank teller, I always have cash in my pocket. Not a lot because I work now in radio, which was a bad move. But I've always got some cash on me. Do you realize we have that in common? My very first job, I was a bank teller. Nice. French market homestead. I had the slacks with the dress shirt and the vest. I was very good. Balanced out every day. Joked a little too much with the customers. Eventually was let go. Where were you at? No, I left the banking job because I got hired to work at a radio station. Because you had too good of a voice to be a bank teller. I had too good of a sense of humor to be one. Why no? That was a stupid move, financially speaking, but there you go. You have a gift. God gave it to you. You must use it. We're going to be back next hour. We'll talk a little bit more about the shooting in Shreveport, as well as the straight of Hormuz. Is it open or is it closed?

I really don't know. I guess it depends on who you watch and who you listen to today. Some things just, some things fit multiple narratives like the shooting and tree ports. Some don't fit others narratives. It is very narrativized, though. You will see headlines depending on what websites you go to. Straits in chaos. Iran's walking from talks. and energy prices are soaring. Well, oil's up to $87 a barrel. I wouldn't say that's soaring. But again, people just use soaring for anything anymore. It was soaring when it was at Biden peacetime levels. So I guess anybody can use any adjective they want or any adverb they want and fit their narrative. But I think the reality for everyone, no matter what side of the narrative you're on. is that we need to pray for these talks. U.S. is certainly ready to go. We did have the U.S. seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship and the Gulf of Omen that has thrown a little bit of a curve in this. We did have an attack on a cargo ship by a gunner boat, by the Iranians. So, you know, everything is just a little bit. Uncertain in the strait. Uncertain with the talks. Is these little bumps for negotiation purposes? I mean, Trump does it. Is this Iran doing it? It is the question of the day. What is the status of the Strait of Hormuz? What is the status of the peace talks planned in Pakistan? Are we within days, as the president said? Or is this a here we go again? Again, I don't see markets. or oil prices reacting in a very dramatic way. And so sometimes when the winds are swirling and I don't know which way they're going, I just find a flag in the stadium that's usually a pretty good indicator of the prevailing wind. But Rory's going to be back next hour to kick around that very tough question. In terms of the eight children, again, I'm a father first. So... Actually, I'm a husband before I'm a father, but as it relates to this particular story. So when I come and share this time at the kitchen table with you, you know, there are the values of my life. There are the rules for those values or my beliefs. What makes in my mind the kind of husband I strive to be M and what defines a good husband. I get that from the Bible. The same for parenting. But as a human being, putting all religion aside, number one, I'm always a husband first. And then I'm a father. And the only reason I'm a husband for a father is because I can't love my children any more than I love their mother. That's the number one thing all kids want. And in this particular story, I can't play talk radio guy with you. I'm wanting to know what happens that a marriage turns into this. Why so many children in such a short period of time? Why are the children with the girlfriend? Why is he shooting the girlfriend and the mother? Why did he kill eight children, seven of his own, let alone an eighth that wasn't even his? And then you start getting into social media footprint, past military involvement, mental illness, past arrest. I mean, there is a million talk radio storylines there to kick around.

So am I supposed to go into defending gun mode? Am I supposed to go into, we got to do something about mental illness in this country. We got to do something about the breakdown in the family. Do you see what I'm talking about, a story that has it all? Can you only imagine where this culture that thinks a position in a debate is what everything's about? No, I can't get beyond seven children who deserve to grow up. Play sports, graduate, have a first kiss, go to a first dance, go to college, get a job, achieve goals, have a family of their own. All that's gone. So here's how I woke up and worded it. Another mass shooting. This time in Shreveport, eight children dead, seven of which belonged to the very gunman himself. Don't even get me started on the shooting at the Iowa campus yet. Guns, mental illness, respect for life. How do we go beyond all of these observations and fights and debates and positions and somehow actually prevent a future death? We go in search of common ground and common sense with our GOP consultant analyst Chris Walker later in the third hour. Also sounds the day. Oh my gosh. Jeffrey, we don't get paid enough to put ourselves through this. No, we really don't. Obama and Zohran Mamdani singing to children in a classroom. Do you want me to do this before you eat breakfast or after? Because you might get sick. But it begs the question, what's Obama trying to prop up here? The socialist Zohran Mamdani or the Islamist Zohran Mamdani could be our question of the day. And the big story on San Francisco, the Exodus continues. Why is it we never consider changing our worldview, changing our policy views? No, people have to continue to move year after year, decade after decade to flee the insane, same policies and expect a different result. There's only so much I can make sense of in a world that doesn't make much sense anymore. But we're in this together. If you miss a little, you'll miss a lot. And if you miss a lot, we'll miss you. This phenomenon of receiving spam text messages all the time or deceptive emails. It's not good. And it's frustrating. But as you commerce, the people that get your information sell it. So they made money off you buying the shirt and they make money off of selling your info. And all of this is processed. A woman came in, asked me to check her balance, so I shoved her. Well, you know, that brings back memories. So we had the cat card, is what they called the original debit card at French Market Homestead. And, I mean, my joke wasn't even attempting to be that funny, but I was just checking, you know, this woman kept losing her debit card. It was like the third time she came to me needing a new one. And I said, well, I'm going to get working on a litter for you right away the way you'll lose them. That was it. I got fired. Really? I mean, it's the litter of cat covers. Why do people not have a sense of humor when it comes to their money? Well, as the manager explained to me in the office, now I was already working for two radio stations at the time. But I really enjoyed being a bank teller. I like the clothes. I loved going on break with the ladies. I loved balancing out. And he was like, Michael, when... people somebody's dealing with people's money they don't like to be joked with it's very serious business their money i want i to make a lot more money just doing radio but i really enjoyed being a bank teller and i really wish i'd have known that balance line i like that one i've stole it What's my balance? All right, what's going on in Iran? It really depends on who you're talking to. One side of the story is Iran seems to be rejecting news peace talks with the president. Mark Mayfield has their top story. According to Reuters, Iran's state news agency cited Washington's excessive demands and the ongoing naval blockade as the key reasons for not taking part in the second round of talks. On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social that his envoys would arrive in Pakistan on Monday for negotiations just before a two-week ceasefire is set to expire. The president also warned that the U.S. would knock out all power plants and bridges in Iran if they don't accept a deal to end the war. I'm Mark Mayfield. Police have identified the shooter in the Shreveport mass shooting, and it's the father, Shamar Elkins, the gunman. He killed eight children, including seven of his own, shot his wife and his girlfriend before being killed by police.

Not even hours after this horrifying crime. And you come to find that the murderer has gun charges against him that he was convicted of and probably can't legally own one. It's too much. Two observations there, Mary. One, you're right. Often is the case. Do you think somebody who's planning to murder, which is a capital felony offense, is going to stop getting an illegal gun?

Stephen O'KC with a poem. The pain of this loss cuts so deep. It echoes in nightmares and sleep. For kids who'll never play and the ones left to pray, we mourn with the families who weep. Authorities say, Shamar Elkins is the identified shooter in this mass shooting in Shreveport. It's being put under the umbrella of a domestic violence attack. Why? Because seven of the eight children he killed were his own. Two of the adults that he shot, one was his girlfriend, one was his wife. Seriously, you want to play talk radio with this? I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how they have seven kids at 31 years old. I don't know why the kids who were shot were with the girlfriend and not the mother. I don't know what the heck was going on. He was in the reserve. I mean, he didn't serve in the military at war in any way that I know of yet that you can pin this to, oh, it's another ex-soldier gone nuts. Or pin it on mental illness because we just don't have enough information yet. So yeah, I guess father shoots girlfriend, shoots wife, kills eight kids, seven of which are his own. Yeah, that's a domestic violence mass shooting in Shreveport. And that's all we know about Shemar Elkins, other than he was arrested on a gun charge in 2019. To Mary's point, clearly couldn't have a gun legally. So we need more serious people than Gavin Newsom this morning. Eight children were killed in the attack, and police said seven of the eight are believed it this time to be Elkins' children. The children range from age one through 14. Police said Elkins also shot the mother of his children, who was expected to survive. Another woman was also shot suffering life-threatening injuries. That is believed to be his girlfriend, while a teenage victim suffered non-threatening injuries as well. It was kind of a three-part thing. There was the original shooting, which appeared to be the wife. Then there was the girlfriend and his children and another child. Then he stole a car and it was believed shot a few others, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The only other shooting after the car chase was him, the shooter, being killed by police. Investigator said Elkins fled the scene in a carjack vehicle, led officers on a chase into Bojure Parish. The incident ended in Bozier City, where Elkins was shot and killed by police. No officers were injured. Eight children gone at a mass shooting in Shreveport. The other big story, the U.S. attacked and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship. It had said... had tried to evade its naval blockade. Again, up until this, I can't tell you how many hundreds just don't even try for fear. So that's the effectiveness, number one. The second effectiveness is the over 14 ships in the first two days that were turned away, never had to be boarded, never had to be shot on. This one did.

It was the first interception since the blockade in Iran began. Iran's Joint Military Command vowed to respond. So, you know, is it this interaction that has made the peace talk look stalled or the straight not to look safely open? Is this for negotiation purposes? Will there actually be a retaliation? Iran offered a new death toll for the war with its forensic chief, saying at least 3,375 people have been killed in the conflict. Of course, these are pathological liars. There's not a whole lot you can do with that information. President Trump on Sunday said U.S. negotiators will be in Pakistan today for another talk with the Iranians. The question is, are the Iranians going to be there a 10-day ceasefire with Israel and Lebanon appears to be holding fragile? But holding, is the Strait of Hormuz still wide open, still secure, or is it insecure and thus uncertain? So right away, you next go to all the headlines in the Associated Press. Oil prices jump. Another source. Oil prices soar. Stocks are mixed as U.S. Iran standoff keeps the Strait of Hormuz in limbo. Then you go inside the numbers. Well, the oil prices went up 5%. And that may sound like a lot, but the benchmark crude gained 5.3% and went to 8788 a barrel. Nowhere near 100. Brent Crude, the international standard, was up 5.3% at $95.62 a barrel. That's not so soaring or rising. It's almost proportional to the events of the weekend. Shared trading, U.S. futures declined with contracts for the S&P 500 and Dow Industrial down 0.7%, so virtually very little, a little more in Europe. The CAC 40 and Paris shed 1.2%. Germany's DAX lost 1.6%. But again, oil affects them a little bit more, the Strait of Hormuz and their oil supply. But nothing compared to what the narratives are going to do. You know, I don't know what you're going to listen to today. I don't know what you're going to watch today. Depending on who it is, they're going to all play these narratives. None of us know. There was an interaction in the Strait of Hormuz. There was one that didn't just turn away or turned away without being boarded. It had to be shot upon. What does that do to the talks? What does that do to the straight? What does that do to gas prices? Time will tell. These headlines won't. They're just designed, I guess, to create outrage on the narrative front. Eight children, including seven fathered by the shooter, all dead in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana. I can tell you that seven of the eight children that were killed are believed to be his children. We are still working to determine a complete motive and understanding as to why this happened, but it is domestic in nature. A total of 10 people were shot with ages of eight. Fatally wounded ranging from 1 to 12 years old. The suspect identified as Shamar Elkins. He was shot and killed by officers after a brief police chase. Can confirm the suspect in these eight homicides as Shamar Elkins. He is believed to be the man responsible for this heinous act. One of the two adults that were victims and shot was the mother of Elkins' eight children, his wife, and the other was his girlfriend. The Trump administration's tariff refund system is set to launch. Mark Mayfield explains. Starting today, American importers will be able to access a portal used to issue refunds from the $166 billion that was paid by companies. The Supreme Court struck down those tariffs in February, ruling President Trump illegally sidestepped Congress when he enacted them. Consumers who paid higher costs on an imported product are not eligible for a tariff refund under this system, but individual companies may be issuing refunds in the future. I'm Mark Mayfield. Blue Origin had a successful launch yesterday. Its new Glenn Rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Tammy Trujillo has the story. However, it was carrying a commercial communication satellite that it put into the wrong orbit, making it unusable. It was the third launch for the new Glenn rocket and the first to reuse the rocket's first stage. The now useless satellite was the largest civilian antenna ever put in orbit. No word on how much it cost, but the company behind it said it's fully insured. I'm Tammy Trujillo. Former President Barack Obama and Mayor Zohran Mamdani met face-to-face Saturday for the first time since Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor. Larry Kovsky has details.
