You're listening to the John Cobel podcast on the IHeart Radio Lab. I'm Sam Shane in for John Cobalt. I appreciate you being here today. We've got so much to cover. We're going to talk a lot about what happened in the... at the U.S. Supreme Court, and that was a very big decision, obviously, that took place. With regards to mail-in ballots, we're going to touch a lot upon that. There is some pushback, especially among some conservatives from Republicans online to the decision, some of them not very happy about this split ruling. Also want to roll out some very interesting audio from California State Senator Scott Weiner. He is a liberal. He, of course, is running for Congress to replace Nancy Pelosi. He was in San Francisco Friday and was essentially verbally attacked on a pretty aggressive basis, by the way, but a number of socialist Democrats who were there at an event where he was. And we're going to roll out some of this audio. And it goes to a much broader issue of what is going on with the Democrat Party right now, especially with the most radical wing. the Democrat Socialists, and anti-Semitic behavior, we are seeing this on a rather consistent basis. So we're going to get into that and more on the big ruling today that came down from the United States Supreme Court that has direct impact here on California with mail-in ballots and where we go from here and what the court is now recommending going forward. There is a resolution to this, but they said it's not at the federal level. at least not for now and if it is congress has to step in so we'll get into those details and maybe there could be something could be done on a state level and some of the options to take care of what many perceived to be this mail-in ballot situation in california that is so damaging to the trustworthiness the integrity of the california voting system so with that Here's just some of the details. And then we'll get into an analyst from UC Berkeley who talks a little bit about the ruling and the implications, the significance for voters here in California. The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that Mississippi can continue with some absentee ballots that are received after Election Day. They can continue to count them. rejecting this Republican challenge that those votes are invalid under federal law. They said no to that argument. It was a five to four opinion. It was written by, by the way, one of President Trump's appointees, and was joined by the court's three liberals, and it delivers a blow to these ongoing efforts by the Trump, the Trump administration, the GOP, to curtail mail-in voting ahead of the midterm. So this was clearly a setback for them. Now, the court ruled.

and noted in their ruling quote mississippi is one of roughly thirty states that count at least some absentee ballots mailed in by election day but received afterward the state allows absentee voters including seniors college students to cast their ballots by mail so long as they are postmarked on or before election day and receive no more than five days afterwards now the republican national committee sued back in twenty twenty four it dates back to then And they argued at the time and continued to argue up until now that the wording of the federal election statutes indicates that election day itself is the deadline for when ballots can be received. Of course, the court today rejected that argument. You're about to hear now from John Yu. He is a UC Berkeley law professor who told Fox News what this means for voters in California. You get the ballot in on or before election day. You're good. But one other thing, and Shannon emphasizes this in her description, too, is that this is still up to the states. The Constitution allows each state to decide how it wants. So you could live in a state like the one you were talking about. Get the ballot by election day. Those are all, and we're going to count it by election day. I think that's what Florida does. That's okay. Or you can live in a state like my own state of California, which says, we're going to take 30 days to count. That's okay. Congress can fix that if it wants a Constitution doesn't prohibit that. But until Congress does, the Supreme Court is saying that's up to each state to decide for something. Okay, so that's the ruling right now from the U.S. Supreme Court. And John U.S. is saying, okay, there are some remedies involved here. On a federal level, it's up to Congress to fix this. So Congress could draft legislation, pass legislation, which of course would have to be signed on a national level. which would address this one particular issue, but according to the court, they so far have not done so. On a state level, here's how all of this could be potentially remedied. Number one, a California legislature could step in and make a similar ruling. However, given the makeup of the California state legislature in Sacramento, the likelihood of that happening right now, dominated by Democrats, very, very slim. Number two, as we go to the ballot box, in November, and we place our votes on the Voter ID initiative, I would not be surprised if we were to see somewhere in the near future maybe another initiative, another voter initiative on this very count about mail-in ballots and when they are to be counted, maybe that's the next one on a state level. So there are two ways to look at this. Now online today, there were a number of Republicans, a number of conservatives, very critical, particularly of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. She was the wrath of conservatives all across social media because she helped author this majority opinion in favor of Mississippi. A number of conservatives saying, including Republican Senator Eric Schmidt, posted on X a shockingly wrong opinion. Amy Coney Barrett joins with liberal justices to hold the federal election law does not preempt states who allow late mail-in ballots to be counted. This is terrible, he writes, for election integrity.

Amy Coney Barrett, another writer, named Hans Manke, posted on X. Oh, hang on here. We're going to get another microphone in here. I apologize. That's why this was so hollow. My apologies here. Another writer, this is from conservative author Hans Manke, who posted on X. Amy Coney Barrett is the biggest conservative judicial disaster since Souter. The difference is that few conservatives expected much from Souter, whereas Amy Coney Barrett was supposed to be the future of the court. Amy Coney Barrett, another conservative writer, a political commentator, Josh Hammer, writes on X. Amy Coney Barrett continues to disappoint in far too many high-profile cases. So we're hearing from one conservative after another, very critical of Amy Coney Barrett. They thought that she would side with the Trump administration and said she does not. She sides with Mississippi. This is from Jason Sneat. He's the executive director of Honest Elections Project and said in a statement that the ruling is deeply disappointing and misses the mark. Goes on to write, federal law is clear all ballots must be received by election day to be counted. The court missed a major opportunity to reinforce election integrity and instead sides with California-style chaos. As Samuel Alito makes clear, in his dissent, watching ballots trickle in after election day and flip races does nothing but damage public trust in our system and of our government So that's just some of the criticism from conservatives and Republicans across America today, especially aimed at Amy Coney Barrett, a five to four decision. And so that's where this now stands. The mail-in ballots will be counted after they arrive on Election Day, five days after, and in California they may be trickling in. And that's just the way it's going to go. So be prepared, folks. There likely is not going to be a remedy on this one. For now, but as I said, two things could happen, one on a congressional level. Number one, the court ruled today that the members of Congress could take up legislation, past legislation, which could be signed into law, which addresses this on a federal level, which they say so far, according to their ruling today, is not being addressed on a federal level specifically. Number two, on a statewide level, it could be taken up by the state legislature, which I just mentioned with the hollow mic that we just had, but back in place, thankfully.

Number two, it could be done by the state legislature, but that's made up of Democrats in Sacramento. And the third option on a state level, possibly I could see very likely happening, is maybe another initiative ballot measure, not in this election cycle, but possibly in 2028, which could address mail-in ballots. We could see that. Who knows? Not sure, but that's the way that ruling went. I want to get to this incredible audio from Scott Weiner. What a great beautiful weekend it was. We're going to get to some reaction. We've been getting it from listeners who have been listening on the IHeart Radio app to what we just talked about a little bit about the big ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on mail-in ballots in a second. Have you been watching? I know we just ran a couple of pieces just a second ago about the big game. Wednesday in Santa Clara, Team USA World Cup. Have you been to Sofi Stadium? If you have, well, you most certainly are not alone. Listen to some of these new numbers that are in on attendance. 2026 World Cup has shattered the international tournament's previous attendance records with numerous rounds of soccer still yet to play. FIFA made this announcement. More than 4.6 million fans of attended games for the 2026 World Cup. being held in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, of course. Previous attendance record of more than 3.5 million set during the 1994 World Cup, which was also held in the U.S. So 3.5 million was the old one record. Now we're at 4.6 million, and we still have a lot of games to play. And I don't know about you, but it just seems to me like the excitement around these World Cup games is unparalleled. I was watching one of the games with my son and his girlfriend the other day. And I don't know if you get this sense, too, but it seems to me, it strikes me that this is one of the great unifying factors right now in the world, right? Globally. I mean, it seems like this is doing for all of us on the planet what the Olympics can do, keeping politics out of it for the most part, and just playing the game.

and it's been really exciting to watch. And I know IHeart's a really big part of it, and that's a great thing. So I want to get into a little bit about this controversial audio that came out of San Francisco in just a moment involving Senator Scott Weiner. Before we do that, though, I just want to get to a little bit of feedback that we've been receiving from some listeners. This listener on the IHeart Radio, I'm talking a little bit about the U.S. Supreme Court decision that we just talked about regarding mail-in ballots and when they are counted in the U.S. Let's take it simply have a deadline date. Have it two weeks before the end of the election. Got to be in by that. So all the ballots would be here by election date. And just like Christmas cards, you got to know what date to mail your ballot in by. Two weeks is more than enough. Have two weeks before. And it's just, there's only one reason. It's just like voter ID. There's only one reason why people wouldn't want this. And it's to cheat the election. And our elections are. There it is. That's the untrustworthiness that we all know exists in these elections because of we have opened up the possibility of corruption. When you have all of these things stacked up, one after another, I've said this before, I believe it's a petri dish in terms of what could happen, what could go wrong, corruption and fraud. You have a everybody gets a mail-in ballot who's registered. You have drop boxes all over the place. You've got ballot harvesting, for goodness sakes. Ballot harvesting. You can go to your neighbor's house and take their ballot and walk away. And they could do the same with you. And that is allowed in California. Now, of course, there are going to be trust issues. Without question, there will be trust issues. Didn't get resolved today with this ruling because the court says other steps have to take place. on the federal level or on the state level, but the court felt like they didn't have enough to allow for a... a ruling in favor of the Trump administration. Okay, I want to talk a little bit about this, Senator Scott Weiner. Senator Scott Weiner is a very interesting fellow in Northern California. He's been a state senator in California for quite some time, very left-leaning, very liberal, and decided that he was going to run for that open seat that was being vacated by Nancy Pelosi, and he won in the primary. So he's running for the United States Congress now, and he's very left-leaning, he's Jewish, and he's pro-Israel. And he has found himself over the course of the last week and a half in two different public settings where he is being viciously verbally attacked by some of these social radical Democrats of the party. Very left-leaning, by the way. Many of the positions that he holds, they hold. But on Israel and on anti-Semitism, not so much. And this is a problem right now for the party. The rise of radical socialists and their hate for Jews. It's becoming glaring. It's a severe problem for the Democrat Party. And their anti-Semitism was on full display in San Francisco. So California State Senator Scott Weiner harassed for his stance on Gaza. This was during the San Francisco Transmarch. It was held on Friday. And it got to a point where it was no longer safe for him to remain there. And then he said later he had to leave.

because these people were so physically and verbally aggressive that it was impossible for him to stay there safely. And he went on to say that this is the first time he had not participated in that March. Now, we've done a lot of work on this clip, by the way, for obvious reasons. There's just all kinds of language in there that is not suitable for radio. But that said, this gives you just an indication of the intensity that he faced. You do not belong here. You do not belong here, Scott, anymore. It's been wonderful. You've been wonderful for trans people. And you've been terrible. And you've terrible. You've been terrible. You've been terrible on Gaza. This is the second time he's faced this type of anger. Anti-Semitic anger. One was earlier in Northern California in a restaurant about a week ago. Same situation. Another video that was posted. Another anti-Semitic just lighting him up for his pro-Israel stance. And this has become a problem not just in California and not just for Senator Scott Weiner. It's become a problem for the party. And we are seeing this more and more in the party, in a party that is becoming more and more radical with more socialists. In fact, it was a hot topic on the Sunday morning talk shows. It was the topic on the Sunday morning talk shows. Virtually every Democrat was asked about it. And Republicans have wasted no time jumping on this, as you might imagine. And they're going to make hay with this from now until November. No question about it. And many of the Democrats, and we're going to be playing some clips here on the program today, had a real difficult time. They were very uncomfortable with the line of questioning. Where is your party going? Or is it already gone? Is it too late? Zohran Mamdani is very happy with the results in New York. The socialist Democrats that he has endorsed did well. He thinks it's good for New York. We got a clip from him coming up. And then Governor Ron DeSantis, by the way, also weighed in on it. He said, not only is it not good for the people of New York, what's going on in New York is good for the people of Florida. So you have two real different points of view on that coming up here. But again, that was one hot topic, and it's one thing that Scott Weiner has been facing over the course of the last week. Some real anti-Semitic hate out there against him. We're going to get into more about the money trail. There's new dedication by the Trump administration to find out the big wealthy folks who are funding many of the movements. throughout this country over the course of a number of years. There's a big investigation going on in New York. There are some new numbers out there involving George Soros that I want to get to. So there's a lot on that front. Also, I want to get to some reaction that we're getting from listeners here on KFI, to California's voting system, the lack of trust in the system. So there's a lot there. And then I want to get into this because I find this to be quite interesting. And this was... Really one of the hot topics on the Sunday morning talk shows this weekend. And it seems every Sunday there's one that jumps out to just about everybody. And this had to do what has to do with what happened in New York, with Democrats, socialist winning in primaries by a, well, a relatively convincing margin. Especially those who were endorsed by the mayor of New York City. So the mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, was on ABC's program with Jonathan Carl. It was a rather friendly interview over the weekend, and he was asked to explain why he believes that the socialist that he endorsed actually won in New York. The candidates you endorsed one down the line, and you knocked off two Democratic incumbent members of Congress. Is this like a unique moment in New York, or is this the beginning of a national movement? I think we are seeing a hunger that is not just felt by New Yorkers, but frankly by Americans from coast to coast for a new kind of politics, one that puts working people at the heart of it. And I think for far too long... What we as a party have been able to say to New Yorkers who are struggling is simply to explain why they're struggling, not actually offer them a vision for how to make life better. And these candidates, Brad, Dari Elisa, Claire, they ran campaigns that spoke to working people and that said life in the nation's most expensive city need not be this way any longer. They promised a lot of stuff. They promised a lot of free stuff, right? The free bus rides, the rent control, which, by the way, is already kicking in in New York City in Manhattan. Free health care, free child care, free this, free that. We've heard it all time and again, right? That's all part of the big promise. That's what many people are buying into right now, who have not studied the benefits of capitalism versus communism versus socialism.

who have not been taught about what goes wrong with communism how maybe you should take a look at Cuba or China or North Korea or the former Soviet Union and why so many of them have collapsed internally what their grocery stores look like those are all issues that need to be raised especially with a whole new generation of Americans who are not satisfied. They grow up in a place like California, and my daughter has said this to me. We've had long discussions about this. She said, Dad, I'm not sure I'd be able to afford to buy a new home in California. You know, and as a dad, your heart breaks when you hear something like that. But that is the reality. Now, is that the failure of capitalism? Or has California swung so far on the pendulum towards socialism and communism that it's gotten in the way of capitalism? It's I think a very good discussion to have about what has happened I mean have we gone already off the deep end in terms of socialism in this state I would make a pretty convincing argument Yeah, we have you look at all the regulations in the red tape look at the folks who are trying to rebuild up to the fires and what they're up against that's just one example We can go right on down the line. So on the other side of this whole discussion is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. I want to roll a clip from him. He gives us an entirely different perspective. He has reaffirmed what many of us had known for quite some time. Why people are picking up their leaving states like New York, like California. And they're moving to states like Florida. And he recited some of the latest numbers that they're seeing in Florida. And this is in an interview he did with Fox News. The state of Florida now has almost 4 million more residents than New York state does. Yet New York's budget is over... twice as large as the state of florida's new york city with eight million people has a larger budget than the entire state of florida and yet our infrastructure is better our roads are better or services are better and so these are choices they don't respect the taxpayers in these places and people have rebelled people have rebelled Yeah, they have. They're moving to places like Florida and Texas. The numbers are irrefutable. That's where they're seeing it. But what I found so interesting about what he said was when you look at the population numbers of Florida and the population numbers of New York, and then you compare the taxes that are paid and are spent, the tax money spent, that there's no correlation. You know what I mean? You would think that in a place like Florida where they have a smaller population, that it would be reflective about what they're doing in New York. And the bottom line is that they're much more efficient because they're friendlier to the taxpayer. We have a listener listening in to KFIAM 640. And he's listening on the IHare Radio. I'm talking a little bit about the voting system in California. And I talk about this all the time, the lack of trust.

This is what I don't get. I moved to the great state of Arizona when I retired from the state of California a couple years ago. During Gavin Newsom's recall or the election after that when he won again, which is impossible, the ballots had to be postmarked by the day of the 5 o'clock that day. But at 5.30 that day, they announced him winning. So how come it, in that case, they go ahead and say, no, nothing else counts he won. But when Republicans ahead, they do the opposite and give it the two weeks. California is BS. Yeah, that's the frustration I have heard and read from so many people in California. They just don't like the system at all. But the Supreme Court, by the way, ruling today, okay, you want to fix it. It's up to the states to figure this out, or maybe Congress to get in specifically on mail-in ballots. By the way, at the top of the hour, we're going to be hearing from Royal Oaks. He is the ABC News legal analyst on today's ruling and the implications for all of that. It's coming up in about 20 minutes or so. We have a lot to dive into, and I want to get into some more audio clips coming up on some of the questioning that Democrats faced over the weekend with regards to social Democrats who won in New York and some of the controversial things that have been said, particularly by one individual, for some remarks about the disdain that she has had for former President Biden. She went so far to call him once upon a time as a racist, and that's been deleted, but nevertheless, I want to get into that line of questioning in a second. Also, big investigation going on. Let's get into this right now into a couple of very wealthy individuals. First of all, California Post Today reporting...

that billionaire Democrat George Soros and his son Alex so far have spent a staggering $102 million in the midterm election cycle so far making the family chief architects of the party's seismic shift towards the radical left and they're not done we've got the November election it's right around the corner more than four months away and the California Post goes on to write that Soros could shatter his own spending record of $128 million during the last midterms, and that was four years ago when he was the single biggest donor. That's one money aspect to report today. Here's the other. This story just moving today, U.S. Department of Justice, DOJ, investigating China-based left-wing billionaire Neville Roy Singham. regarding alleged financial crimes. This is according to Fox News. They broke the story today. So it stems from a book that was written by Peter Schweitzer. You might recognize him. An investigative reporter does great work. He's written a number of books. He's been a senior contributor at Fox News. He holds other titles. But he had a book that was called Blood Money, Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye while China Kills Americans. Now, that was his previous book, not the most recent one that was out, but a good one nonetheless. And in the book, he talks about how Neville Roy Singham and Alibaba co-founder Joseph Tsai helped radical groups using transgenderism against the capitalist order. He wrote about this way back in 2024. So according to sources familiar with this new matter, this new investigation, this grand jury, it's in Manhattan. They've issued subpoenas as part of the probe, which was launched by the Attorney General J. Jay Clayton for the Southern District of New York at this point in time. Attorney General acting Attorney General Todd Blanche apparently has signed off on all of this. The grand jury's actions follow an investigation that was published in mid-March documenting how Singham pumped $285 million from his base in Shanghai into a Goldman Sachs philanthropy fund. They're tracking the money now. They are looking for potential wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering. They're going to go deep, not just here. I'm convinced they're going to go deep on these NGOs, and they're going to start going deep on the nonprofits. Where is all this money going, the shell game that is being played right now? And they have indicated as much. Todd Blanche has indicated as much in a number of news conferences recently that they're going to start to investigate the source of the funding that could be causing the unrest in America. So stay tuned to that. That is underway. That grand jury investigation is now underway in New York. Now to some of the hotly contested issues this weekend on the Sunday morning talk shows, most notably what's going on with the Democrat Party and what direction are they headed. Here's another example. NBC's Ryan Nobles. He was filling in for the usual host of Meet the Press, Kristen Welker, and he was interviewing Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut. Talking about a campaign ad from the congressional nominee, the Democrat from New York, Daraliza Avia Cheviya, she is a former opponent of the Democrat Representative Adriano Espaillat. Now.

Her opponent had an ad which showcased Chevalier's history of controversial social media posts. One of them has been deleted. One of them, which shows her disdain for former President Joe Biden, where she went so far in this post to call him a rapist. And this is the light of questioning for Senator Chris Murphy on that topic. You've talked about this bigger tent. If you're saying the Democratic Party needs a bigger tent, does that include someone who called a former Democratic president of the United States a rapist? Yeah, well, I mean, I'm not super familiar with that race. All I'm saying is that this party has to have a real contest of ideas. And I just don't think that our defense of incrementalism has worked. So I don't mind a contest of ideas. And I just don't know that we have had it to the extent that voters have been satisfied. Listen, it's no secret. Voters aren't super happy with establishment Democrats or establishment Republicans these days. So, yeah, we're going to bring Republicans in on this discussion. He couldn't get away from that fast enough, could he? Could not get away from it fast enough? These are some very radical people who have been elected in the primaries in New York. There's another interesting race in Colorado involving a socialist Democrat as well. Right around the Denver region, by the way, this is a congressional race. And there are indications that this candidate has a shot. It could win. This could go nationwide. Zohran Mamdani, by the way, was asked about that over the weekend. And he deflected. He said, no, look, right now I'm just really happy with what's going on in New York and I want to focus on New York and so on and so forth. My expectation in all of this has been, I think this is moving a lot faster than even he anticipated. And it's moving so fast that the establishment in the party, the Democrat Party, can't keep up. They're struggling. They don't even know how to handle this stuff. And so when they get the questions, then the deflection happens. And that's what we just saw with Chris Murphy. We got some more examples of that coming up a little bit later on in the program. I want to get this a quick clip in because it has to do with Bill Maher. And he's sort of weighed in on this, just very briefly, by the way. He's now on the record. You may have seen this interview that he had done having this discussion. He said that if socialists take over the Democrat Party with messages like defund the police and destroy the border and anti-Semitism and so on, those consistent messages that we've heard from them, he says if that happens, his vote is in play. This is Bill Maher. So this was him at an event at the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Center, had this to say about socialists who have won in these recent elections. The Democrats just elected three.

very far left Democratic socialists in New York who are crazy. Like outright, really crazy. So, like, are they going to blow it? I don't know, but they seem to be all on their way. Are they going to blow? are entirely fabricated. There is my take on this Scott Wiener being accosted like that. While I don't agree with it, it just shows that him and all of the other establishment Democrats, they are being eaten alive by their selfish children. It's like when a parent does not raise their children and say no to them and gives them everything they want. They grow up to be self-entitled and they want everything for free. And if they don't get it, they're going to fight. So I just kicked in just a little bit of extra for you there, a little extra listener feedback just for a little bonus. But that's what we heard from Bill Maher. Who says, are they going to blow it? I don't know, but they may be on their way. Who knows? He did an interview over the weekend. He says he does not believe that a billionaire's tax will chase billionaires or wealthy Californians out of the state.
