This is Gary and Shannon, and you're listening to KFI AM 640, the Gary and Shannon Show on demand on the IHeart Radio app. Welcome to Wednesday, July 8th. We have been listening to President Trump giving his, I guess you could say departure speech, if you will. He's about to wrap up a couple days of meetings with other NATO members and had said that they've come to an agreement, among other things, for those NATO members to reach a threshold of at least 5% of their GDP when it comes to defense spending. so that the United States is not carrying the burden for all of them. He hasn't yet started taking questions. That's going to be probably the bigger issue because of some comments that he made earlier today that the ceasefire in his mind, the ceasefire with Iran is over. He said that the Iranian leadership is scum and you can't believe a word that they say. So we did hit according to Sentcom. about 80 targets overnight because the Iranians fired on three different vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, and then Iran said that they're going to retaliate, and the president came back and said, well, we could take Carg Island if we wanted to, and there's nothing you could do about it. The Secretary General of NATO, by the way, Mark Rutte said America's strikes were absolutely necessary. So seem to have the backing of NATO in that. He went on to say, when you have a ceasefire and Iran is basically violating the ceasefire, we see what happened yesterday with ships being attacked. I think it is totally crucial that the U.S. forcefully reacts. Energy stocks have risen as well. Shares of Conoco Phillips. Chevron gained 2% each. Marathon Petroleum up 5%. It's going to be interesting. The president also did say he's not going to fly the new Air Force One out of Turkey. I'm telling you, bro.

2:53

There's something hanky with that plane. Well, what he said was they're going to take the old one. I want an American plane out of here. You're going to take the old one on their way to Mindenhall, which is a military base up in the UK. And it's going to fly sort of in tandem with the new Air Force One, but that it's going to stay at Mendenhall so that the great American warriors who are stationed at Mindenhall can take a look at it. Yeah, yeah. He listens to the show. He's like, you know what, that crazy woman may be on to something. Maybe I should take a second look at this plane given to me by the Middle East. The only other story really that came out of NATO so far, other than like you said, Mark Routish expressing his support for President Trump, he actually said especially regarding that pledged by these other NATO countries to come up and step up to the plate when it comes to putting more money into the group's defense budget. He said this is something that should have been done a long time ago and that he, I just like the guy, I think was his exact quote about his feelings towards President Trump. The other one was that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ignored President Trump while they were at the gathering for the group. They have not gotten along recently over her refusal to allow the U.S. military to use Italian bases during this war with Iran. Also. allegedly furious after Trump claimed that she begged him for a photo at the G7 summit. All the egos. Which is such a weird. It's so stupid. President Trump also did lash out at Spain earlier today. He said that they are not contributing what they need to when it comes to defense and basically turned to Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury, who's there with him in this NATO meeting, and said, cut it all off today. Stop it. No more trade with Spain. The Spanish Prime Minister, understanding the situation. Pedro Sanchez's office said, this is business as usual. We don't intend to change anything about our excellent trade relations with the United States, basically saying the guy is all talk. He'll come back from whatever anger outbursts he's having right now, and we will continue to trade. So if you're planning on, I don't know, trading with Barthelona, perhaps your plans are still in place. It is getting ugly in Maine. There is a succession fight underway. Bernie Sanders has now entered the fray, calling for Graham Platner to drop out of that Maine Senate race. Did the Democrats wait too long to abandon this ship that was going down weeks, months ago? This morning, the Maine Democratic Party calling out Graham Platner's team for pushing to influence the process to replace him. He hasn't even withdrawn yet. We'll talk about what this means when we return. Gary and, oh, reminder, any place you find your podcast is where you're going to find the Gary and Shannon Joe podcast. I mean, anywhere. Yeah. We prefer the I heart radio because they write our checks. But anywhere you find Apple podcast, Spreaker, Spotify, whatever. I was thinking about this. Part of the magic of radio used to be, you had to be listening at that moment. Did you hear what Conway said? Did you hear what Handel said or what have you? Now.

When we do something ridiculous, which we do every day, just look at our social media where people call for, I don't know what happened to our social media, but it's a dangerous place. Anyway. It used to be Newport. Now it's Newport with some sewage in it. Yeah, it used to be our family. And now it's all these crazy people that don't understand our family dynamics and take us way too seriously. But anyway, it used to be... And out of context. And out of context. Great point. But anyway, if you miss something, it's not that you missed it anymore. If you subscribe to the podcast and people like, did you hear those crazy people? Why are they calling for death threats on social media? You can go back and listen to the podcast. You just have to subscribe. and then you never miss any of the controversy. Never miss any of it. You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI AM 640. Nice warm July week. Volcano fire that broke out in Riverside County in the La Cresta area yesterday. Did not expand as quickly as was feared. About 138 acres is the latest number of 45% containment. There was also a fire that broke out near Encino. There was about eight acres. And while that was going on yesterday, there was an LAPD helicopter who was there to help watch over things. hit by a drone from some complete effing moron. So the helicopter had to make an emergency landing at the Van Nuys Airport out of just complete exercise of caution. Fire itself, again, only about eight acres. Nobody was hurt on the LAPD helicopter, but it could have been much worse. Shohei Atani with his 300th career home run last night. But who stole the show? Two tiny trash pandas. Two little baby pandas have gone viral. Raccoons. Excuse me. Pandas. That would be weird. That would be something to go viral. That would be breaking news. If some pandas just turned up in the outfield. But no, these were raccoons. They were caught on camera roaming underneath the outfield wall padding. The broadcasters assured viewers that help was on the way to bring them to safety. Everyone wanted to take them in and make them pets. I have raccoons in my home. You do not want them as pets. There's the whole rabies thing, illegal. It's also that. And also, they're dangerous. They're not a kind people, raccoons. They can be very angry. They can be very cute, but they'll come after you with their little hands. They're a little human hands. Exactly. And to the coyote that took a massive dump on my back patio, can we not? Can we not? Because much like my husband is the one who gets in trouble for the Wi-Fi, I'm the one who gets in trouble for the coyote taking a dump in the backyard. Yeah. Oh. He comes home. He's like, do you see what your coyote did in the backyard? I'm like, wait a minute. Wait a minute. It would have been more appropriate if it was the if the raccoons were at.

The Angel Stadium because the Rocket City Trash Pandas are... A minor league affiliate of the Angels. Oh, that would be very apropos, wouldn't it? Yeah. To Maine we go where Democrats say that Graham Platner's people are getting in the muck of everything. They're calling out Graham Platner's team for pushing to influence the process to replace him. By the way, Graham Platner has not withdrawn. Finally, Bernie Sanders, who crowned this guy, the second coming, has come out and denounced him, calling for him to drop out of the main Senate race. But according to the main Democratic Party executive director, They said, unfortunately, Graham Platner's team has repeatedly reached out to us in an attempt to put their thumb on the scale of what the process looks like. We have repeatedly reiterated to Graham Platner's team that they have no role in determining our next Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, nor in determining what the process looks like. Interesting. So apparently, I mean, I'm trying to read between the lines here. Graham Platner was able to score a bunch of money. and influence and where the money goes, the team goes. We've learned that countless times. You know, where Eric Swalwell's, what he got in trouble for rape or allegations of not playing well with others, i.e. women. His, all of his money and his team slid over to Xavier Becerra. So there is some sort of negotiations that go on with the team and the money having a role in this process of determining who the candidate will be. Sure. I mean, it's almost like the Democratic Party in Maine's trying to fight and stay relevant. We're the main Democratic Party, we get to decide. Whereas the money and the team that is the winning team behind the scenes, they get to decide who the candidate is. It's very weedy. Yeah, it's also one of those, it's another example of a problem with the Democratic Party right now. They're dealing with this far left aspect of the party, Democratic socialists that have been so popular that are steering this thing to the left. and mainstream Democratic Party operatives slash stalwarts that have been there and are saying we're losing our party. We've got to make sure we can control what's going on. These fights are on the one hand, as long as it doesn't destroy the party, it can be a good thing. You can strengthen a political party by having some dissent within there.

12:11

We saw that with the Republican Party with the Tea Party movement, where there was a push to move it to the right. There was sort of a reconfiguring of leadership there in the Republican Party. And it came out at, you could argue, it came out stronger on the other side of it. Graham Platner has until July 13 to drop out in order for the party to select a new nominee. The state party there said it's working through what that process would look like, but it won't make it public until he formally steps aside. They know exactly what they're going to do. Yeah, I've seen at least two or three different lists of potential replacements for this guy. They know, they know. Yeah, he's got to withdraw by Monday. Monday. Okay. The stakes are very high for Democrats. The party needs a net total of four seats to win back the Senate. Maine is key to that effort. President Trump lost the state in 2024. Parties believe Susan Collins could be vulnerable in the year where the Republicans are facing some headwinds politically. There's another report as well. I think it was from Axios this morning that suggests the Republican Party there in Maine and generally knows how important that is, the Congressional Campaign Committee for Republicans. Know how important this race in Maine is. They're putting millions of dollars already behind an ad campaign for whoever takes over for Graham Platner. Exactly. Because they want to steer the conversation before this person gets to introduce themselves, Republicans want to go, let me tell you about Susie McGillicuddy. It's just interesting to watch the whole power struggle. Is it the Democratic Party leadership? you know, the DNC of Maine that has the control? Or is it just the people writing the checks and who do they want? So we'll see. All right. Parental consent, there was a Supreme Court decision where they declined to block a Texas law. Texas is going to require app stores to verify user ages. It's so cute when people think parental controls work. I support the law, but I'm also realistic and I know that it is not. going to happen the way they think it's going to happen. It's almost like they're saying, okay, well, look, we're doing something. Yes, we're taking money from all these tech companies, but we're doing something, even though they know that it's not doing anything. You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI AM 640. The governor of Kentucky has now sent a letter to Mitch McConnell's office demanding an update. Three weeks ago, Mitch McConnell went to the hospital and they have been weakened at Bernie's silent about this whole thing. So this has echoes of people claiming that Joe Biden was on top of it behind closed doors, if you remember. The Senate's top two Republicans. Both John Thune of South Dakota, the leader, and John Barrasso of Wyoming, the number two Senate Republican, each said they've had phone calls with Mitch McConnell and that they were substantive and they talked about current events like Graham Platner. Scott Jennings, who was a CNN analyst, also says he spoke to the senator yesterday morning for just about 20 minutes.

15:34

So, but there was a meme this morning of a Mitch McConnell lookalike dancing the thriller dance like a zombie. A quick update on the president. He has wrapped up his comments there in Ankara, Turkey, referred to the Iranian leadership as a little bit loco, I'm sorry. So. Earlier today, he was asked a question in yet another press conference about the Iranian regime, why the ceasefire is over, and what's going on? Is the ceasefire over? Is the ceasefire done? Is the MOU dead? It's a very interesting question. To me, I think it's over. I don't want to deal with them with them, but they're scum. You know what scum is? Okay, so... I want to go back to that question. How many cups of coffee is this question? Play the question if you can. Okay. Is the ceasefire over? Is the ceasefire done? Is the MOU dead? Is that two cups of coffee? That's three. That's three cups of coffee. And it's Turkish coffee. I don't know what that means. Well, I would assume it's probably a stronger brand. You think it's stronger? It ain't Folgers crystals. I mean, I don't know. I haven't been to Turkey. Amy, you've been to Turkey. Yes, and the coffee is incredibly strong. Oh, boom. And it's even stronger in Egypt. Okay, dokey. Yeah, now we know. But not as strong as it is in Argentina. Don't know. I haven't been there. Don't care about Argentina. That was a little soccer humor. It was a soccer slam is what it was. You just sounded serious about that. You don't care about Argentina. I don't. I was cheering for Egypt. Oh, man. Now where are you at? Well, I like Norway, but I haven't been there. And France plays tomorrow, so I'm excited about that. I've been to Jon Ossoff. Oh, nice. That counts as Norway, doesn't it? You're damn right, it does. So the president was asked then later in this news conference, he just wrapped up. Why did you call them scum? What changed between, hey, they're reasonable people, and now they're scum. Today you said they were scum, sick people, and being led by sick people. What changed and do you think they're... I got to know. I've said that about a lot. Now, when you say rational, I think they're much more rational than level one, level two, level. One is gone, level two is gone. This is level three. I think they are more rational, but based on their actions over the last week or two, They're not doing a service to the people. So that explains it. Now, this story out of the Supreme Court yesterday, they declined to block a Texas law that's going to go into effect soon that would require app stores, think Google Play, Apple App Store, et cetera, to verify a user age.

18:19

with a system of parental consent if there's somebody under the age of 18. This was a unanimous or at least no judge expressed any dissent. So they're talking about this Texas law that could be enforced. Similar to a law in Ohio that says that social media sites cannot serve users under the age of 16 without first getting parental consent. A district court had said that was... unconstitutional. The Sixth Circuit disagreed. The ruling is split, but the lead opinion applies strict judicial scrutiny. It argued that Ohio's demand for parental consent passes the test. So here we are, similar to what we've seen in Australia and in the UK, where they have outright banned social media for anybody under the age of 16, and it doesn't work. Now, again, I would absolutely support a law like this, but regardless of what the law says, it's so much more incumbent upon what the parents do than what the app store is requiring of a kid to prove their age, et cetera. They're going to get around that. They're going to get around it. They've done it in Australia. They'll do it in the UK. They'll do it in Texas when it happens. Kids know how to work this stuff better than you do. It's the way every technology has worked since the dawn of time. For whatever reason, kids are more apt to pick it up. Their brains are more sponge-like, what have you. It's more intuitive for kids. Think of, I don't know, I don't want to age anybody, but every new technology. Kids know it better than adults. And phones, especially, I mean, especially when you grew up using them. Getting away, getting around parental controls is as easy as. They've never known a world without them. So it's a weird thing for us to even try to impose some sort of reality on them. Like, hey, there used to be a time when you had to call your friend and you weren't sure if they were home. Or you had to actually go through a gatekeeper. And when Suzanne's dad answered the phone, you had to, through your crackly, pubescent voice, ask if you could talk to his daughter. I love playing catch-up with this, whether it be the state laws, federal laws, the courts would have you. But the fact of the matter is the toothpaste is out of the tube. The heroin is out of the baggie. The addictions have been firmly planted in all of these young minds. They're there. They're living their life. And they're not going to go away by a parental control. The baggie? I don't know. How do you get heroin? Isn't it like a rock and a baggie? Like most drugs come in baggies, right? A little Ziploc baggies? I don't know how heroin comes. I'm assuming it comes in a baggie. And then you, if it's a rock, you crush it up and... Bro, I did not do heroin that I know of. Did you see anybody do heroin? No. No, it was not a... You looked off to the corner over there. No, I don't think I ever saw heroin. You said I don't know. I never saw anyone shoot up anything.

21:41

I drew the line at needles. We do have a vast library of knowledge in our listener base, so I'm sure somebody will explain. Somebody else. You guys, you don't even know how to do heroin.
