All right, it is a Thursday morning, May 14th. Good morning, everybody. Handel here and the entire morning crew as we start the show. It looks like the entire team is here. I'm not going to say hello to everybody and come back and say hello to me because that's just stupid. So Neil, Kono, Amy, Will, and Ann, good morning. Wait a second. You've been doing this for 32 years. When did you decide it was stupid? This morning. Oh, okay. Just as I went on because we just spent too much time. How are you? I'm good. Things are great. Yeah, things are great. Okay. You know, just I do that on handle on the law all the time when they start with, oh, how are you? I go horrible. Or, yes, move on. I hate those crutches. And here we are as a crutch. How are you is inevitably the crutch? I mean, I just go right into, I just go right into. Yeah, I just go right into someone. Someone calls me. I pick up the phone and go continue. Well, that's it. You know, it's all you have to say. Also, if you go on my voicemail, my personal one, which nobody has, including the staff here, instead of I'll call you back at my earliest convenience or thanks for calling. And all I see is Bill Handel, who doesn't know to leave a message? I don't know. None of us ever call you. That's true. That's true, absolutely. No one ever calls me, which is fine. All right. Let me see what we have. Let's talk today about what's going on in China, in Beijing, where the president, our president, and the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, are having their meeting, their summit, of which, as I said yesterday, Trump is out of his league with this guy. He is out of his league. As far as the president is concerned, it's all panoply. And it's all, let's just think of how terrific he is. Give him a lot of kudos and make it a very big event that he comes. Now let's start talking about some real topics. Not really happening. Do we have... Anything, you know, the negotiation is the one who's willing to walk away, right? That's how it's always said. If you're willing to walk away, then you have the upper hand. What does China need from us or want from us? Well, China needs the market because China sells to us in abnormally large categories of goods. It needs that for sure.

It used to need technology, although it is ramping up so much quicker than the United States is in all areas of technology. I don't know if you watched ABC News last night. There was, David Muir was doing a segment in one of the halls. convention halls. And there was the robot that China has produced, one of the companies. That robot, which looks very much like a human, is dancing and it ice skates. and it roller skates and it goes on its back and flips back up. Break dancing. I mean, this thing is unbelievable and does dishes. I mean, we're not even close to that. So I'll talk later on about what's going on in China. And it's coming out like I suspected. And that is the President G is telling how terrific Trump is and how wonderful you are and how important you are. and how important Chinese and American relations are. Bottom line is Xi Jinping wants Taiwan. That's it. Yeah. It's that simple. That's where it breaks down to. The unification of China is really important to him. And nothing was mentioned about that on the American side. Nothing. Just blew right past it. And the Strait of Hormuz. She said, we want the Strait of Hormuz opened up. That's very important. Yet what are you planning on doing about it? Not a word. Just we want it open. That's a lot of babble there. So anyway, we'll talk more about that. And matter of fact, that was our lead story right here, handle on the news with Amy, Neil and me. China. We just did that. China. Yeah. Yeah, China. A lot of Chinese food. It's still the lead story. You know, it is. No, but I said that was the lead story. China. See? Just listening to the music. Is that what it is? No, just listening to the music. What's our lead story, Kono? China. See? I rest my case. Oh, boy. Does that robot do talk show hosts? Far better than this one does. I'll tell you that. China. Okay, moving on. LA may be pushing to prevent pay raises. The LA City Council has moved to potentially delay that $30 hourly minimum wage for hotel and airport workers. It might be needed to stave off a business-backed ballot initiative to eliminate the city's gross receipts tax. Okay, so the ordinance was first approved. to raise it to $30 an hour by 2028 in time for the Olympics. Well, now they're saying, maybe we'll push that back until 2030. That came after airline and hotel businesses got enough signatures to qualify a measure for the November 3rd ballot that would repeal the city's gross receipts tax, which, if approved by voters, would strip about $740 million from the city's general fund.

Yeah, this is a very big deal. This is, be careful what you wish for kind of story. And that is this hourly wage, $30 only for hotel workers and only for people at the airport. The rest of the employees out there, of course, are chopped liver. Matter of fact, that's exactly what they are chopped liver. Was this supposed to be just for the Olympics? No. It was supposed to be in time for the Olympics. Yeah. And so what the business owners did is simply set up this proposition that's going forward. It's a motion. And it's going forward that is going to cut that or at least just delay it. And we're just actually, it's a move to cut that by saying gross receipts. Gross receipts for anybody that works in LA. That is disgusting. It's another tax on business. Let's tax business. And I am in the middle of one of these with L.A. City. They keep on insisting that I pay a gross receipts tax for my business, of which I have never worked in Los Angeles ever. Broadcast from Burbank. My offices, my, I broadcast from Burbank. I'm registered in Burbank. I moved to Orange County, where now my office is, where my, quote, business resides. I'm on my fifth letter from these clowns. saying please provide information. They just want, what? L.A. hates business. They treat business. Yeah, clearly. Just don't do business in L.A. And so they're nuts. They really are. And so there's going to be a big fight because if this thing passes, $740 million walks out the door. And that is a little problematic for the city of Los Angeles. That's for sure. Justin just listener sent in a talkback that says, hey, Bill, it's easy for China had to have great tech when they just steal everyone's information and intellectual properties. Not anymore. Not anymore. Once you steal them all, then you move forward. Well, they've developed their own. They didn't steal our robotics, for example. They didn't steal our technology for electric cars, for example. I mean, they developed their own. Hey, by the way, that's not to say that China didn't in a major way. I mean, their espionage, corporate espionage is insane. But they need it less and less and less. I mean, they are developing their own. Well, let's see what Elon Musk does. Well, he's up to his eyeballs with China. But he has so much stuff manufactured in China. His batteries are manufactured in China. A lot of his solar panels are manufactured. I don't know. Does Elon Musk do solar panels? I don't know. Yeah, he's working on the clear ones, I think, or the ones that look like. It all be manufactured in China.

All right. JD Vance came out. Vice President's JD Vance admitted Wednesday that the Trump administration has a lot of work to do on the economy. This, of course, comes after pushback from Trump's remarks about American finances and not thinking about them. I think that's kind of stupid. He was talking about the war. He does not speak well. He should have come out and said, listen, this is so important that it's more important than the finances in the short term. But he didn't. He just, no, he was, yeah, you're right. He misspoke. He said on his way to Air Force One to fly to Andrew's joint base to go to China. He was asked by a reporter and he responded. He was not motivated by American's financial situation to make that deal to end the war with Iran. That was far more important. That's all he was looking at. So a quote, I don't think about American's financial situation. I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That's all. And I agree with you. I mean, that's just him, you know, shooting from the hip. That's how he talks. And JD Vance is not eloquent. Ultimately, yeah. To me, he was saying, this is so important that it transcends. Right. Well, not for people who can afford gasoline right now, but that is a hand in hand. Now, he wants to end the war, and that's why he's in China. That was the major reason. China isn't going to do crap. China says they wouldn't even admit they're willing to pressure Iran to open up the straits. Nothing. All Xi Jinping said is our relationship is important, and we would like the straight open. That's it. And then, of course, you're the greatest president that ever lived. You are wonderful. You are fantastic. Let's have you be at the airport. When you come down those steps, we're going to make it a terrific thing. We're going to have 300 kids waving American flags. They had a group of kids singing the star-spangled banner. They sure do know how to. Put on a show. Yeah, put on a show. They do. And that's what works with Trump. And that's truly what works with Trump. Why do you make us wave flags with your face on them when you come into the studio? Because that's different. That's what works with you. That's different. Yeah. Right this way, Mr. Handel. You look great, Mr. Handel. Is that a new hair on the top of your head, Mr. Handel? Let's take a break. Okay. Off the dome, Mr. Handel. Winding down or ramping up. Russia's President Vladimir Putin had just said that he thought the war with Ukraine was pretty much winding down. And then... Russia fired at least 800 drones in a massive daytime barrage on about 20 regions of Ukraine. At least six people have been killed, dozens wounded, including children. They hit apartment buildings, all kinds of targets. It was one of the longest attacks by Moscow in the four-year-old war, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. It lasted for hours on the capital city of Kiev, the western city of Elvieve near Poland, and the port of Odessa on the Black Sea.

Yeah, certainly winding down war almost over, right? That's what he was just saying. I know. How about that? How about that? We certainly want to believe Vladimir Putin, don't we? South Carolina Supreme Court just yesterday overturned the disgraced attorney Alex Murdo and his double murder conviction and life sentence and ordered a new trial in the killings of his wife and son. And this came down, we talked about this a little bit yesterday, came down to the court seeing that he was denied his right to a fair trial because. A clerk of some kind, Rebecca or Becky Hill, improperly or improper external influences on the jury. And the concept of putting her fingers on the scales of justice makes them want to go through the skin. It doesn't mean the guy is going to get off scot-free or anything. No, no, a couple things about that. First of all, as she is escorting people into the jury room, she is telling jurors. Watch out for what Murdoch says. Don't believe everything he says. Look at his body language as you come in when he testifies straight out. She said that to the jurors. Wow. I know you're looking at shocked. I mean, and this is where the court went completely crazy on that. This was a unanimous decision. So his conviction is overturned. Now, what the prosecution has the choice of retrying him or not, in some cases they don't retry. If, for example, if it's close, the jury decision is close, five to four, for example, they'll go, we're not going to retry it. This one, the jury spent three hours out there and just nailed him. And so they're going to retry. By the way, he's not locking out the door. He got convicted of all of those financial crimes for embezzling all the money from his law firm. So he's already doing decades in jail. I mean, he's 57. If nothing happens, he'll die in prison. But there's going to be another trial. Unless it's too expensive. A lot of times the prosecution doesn't retry someone because the cost to the county can be astronomical in these trials. Second body has been recovered. Remember, the two soldiers went missing. In Morocco earlier this month, during a break from an annual training exercise with U.S. and NATO forces, specialist Mariah Collington's body was found, just recovered in a coastal cove about 500 meters away from where she and another soldier went into the water last week. Did you notice, well, of course you did, but let's note the amount of time and effort the military took in recovering her body. Knowing she didn't survive, but that goes to show you how service people, we don't leave anyone behind. That's just the way it works in the military.

All right. I think we have time for one more at least before we take our break. Sure. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass continues to hold what looks like a lead among unlikely voters in her bid for re-election. So not a huge margin, and it probably won't avoid a runoff with either Spencer Pratt, which has an interesting backing or the horrible Nithya Raman. Sorry. Did you see yesterday, um, uh, councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, uh, who is a friend of the show, a friend of mine, crush Nithya Raman about wanting to stop people from having barbecues on red flag days? It was comical. Just Crush. And mentioning the fact that more fires, there's other fires like, you know, homeless fires and the like that are more problematic than people having Carnegie Asada on a Sunday. You know, we, you and I do these broadcasts and you do them and. The last one we did was barbecue at my house for Catarinas Club. Let's move that broadcast to red flag days. Right in front of right on first street there at City Hall. Yeah, and literally put a red flag up there and grilling and we barbecue. You know what? We should do a barbecue on the lawn of City Hall on a red flag day. Yeah, like, yeah, they're going to let us do that. Look at the choices we have. Not much. It's a little tough. Okay. Billionaire Bails out. Billionaire, former California governor's candidates, and former backer of Eric Swalwell before the whole scandal, Stephen Kleubeck was arrested in West Hollywood. He turned himself in at an L.A. County Sheriff's Department Station. He had an outstanding felony a warrant for alleged violations of dissuading or intimidating witnesses. or victims of a crime. And that is that he is, has allegedly tried to intimidate witnesses who were going to testify against his fiancé. That's a weird story. Yeah, Adva Levy is accused of meeting men online and then burglarizing their homes, several of them. Yeah, and extorting wealthy older men and younger women. Okay. And they say she posed as a girlfriend, travel companion of people, stole cash, credit cards, high-end designer items. And he, interesting guy. You know, he was on our show.

Remember when I interviewed him? Very interesting fellow. And while he was running for governor and then dropped out of the race. So we're going to find what happens with that. I found him fascinating, hugely successful, self-made man, but most billionaires are. Already, from the people who brought you Operation Epic Fury. Now comes Operation Sledgehammer. So the U.S. military, considering officially renaming the war with Iran to Operation Sledgehammer, if this current ceasefire collapses and, of course, President Donald Trump decides to restart. You remember he turned off the clock so he wouldn't have to, that 60-day mark or whatever? Yeah, there was a lot of controversy on that one, too. Now, this has to do with the 60-day War Powers Act. where the president within 60 days has to ask Congress to continue on with any military intervention. And so Marco Rubio said that the Operation, the Epic Fury, is over. He said it's over. And so, okay, it's over. Now, let's go with Operation Sledgehammer. And just before that runs out, you're going to see Operation Weedwacker. And then before that runs out, you're going to see it's just going to keep on going. Operation rock, paper, scissors. Yeah, it's just, yeah, it's just crazy. And that's a smart play if it's legal to just say, oh, we changed it. Right. It's not. It's not. It's like what do they do that in chess, where they reset the clock each time? Yeah. And the other claim is, it's a cease fire. Is that considered the ending of the war? No. It's not an end. They said it was a pause. Yeah, okay. But a pause under the War Powers Act, there isn't a word under the War Powers Act that talks about a pause. It's 60 days. Thank you. If you go to day 61 with any kind of military intervention that we're talking about like this, you have to get Congress to approve it. Of course, that's bouncing back and forth. I have a question for you. Did Operation Desert Storm? That was the first time we went into Iraq. Did that have congressional approval? It did. Oh, you bet it did. Oh, okay. Yeah. Because they went from Desert Shield to Desert Storm. Yeah, well, Desert Shield was the precursor and Desert Storm came in big time. Yeah. I mean, there were 60 countries involved in Desert Storm. I mean, the number of allies that Bush was able to put together was extraordinary. students on sandy and luna side we love this so as you know there are a couple of little eagles up in a nest and big bear and their moms are jackie and dad are jacky and shadow they've been never heard of it i know right they've been nesting there for years and um just a few months ago it's actually something that sandy steers who was the head of friends of big bear valley was really pushing for before she passed away um was to raise enough money to buy some land so it wouldn't be developed. And now we're finding that students are getting involved. And so Sarah Stinson's science class at John Baldwin Elementary School up in Danville is apparently obsessed with the Eagles. They found out that their habitat was at risk. And so they have been watching the Eagles and now they're taking action.

They've been doing bake sales and selling lemonade and trying to raise money. They also are writing to celebrities and influencers and even send a letter to Taylor Swift to try to get her to back it. Of course, they need $10 million. Yeah, there's an easy end around here because the developer goes ahead is allowed to develop and like any development. the city or the county says, okay, we'll let you do it. And you have to set aside 30% for low income housing. So in this case, you have to set aside 30% for low income housing and one condo for the Eagles as long as they have housing. See, it's an easy way out. I'm telling me, I should be in city government. I'm just so good at this stuff. California AG, of course, Attorney General, rather, Rob Bonta, sent a letter to FIFA demanding answers over the World Cup ticket prices. His words were potentially misleading, is what he called it in this letter. He requested a lot of different information from FIFA. He wants to look and assess the potential violation of California law because you've got a lot of fans that are... unhappy to say the least with FIFA practices surrounding ticket sales of the 2026 World Cup. It takes place from June 11th to July 19th. So it's coming up. And it's in the United States. It's in Mexico. It's in Canada. So. Yeah, but look what they did. What they did. They didn't sell specific seats. They sold a general seating area and sold the tickets. And that is the problem. Now, I have never heard of a sport event, sporting event, where when you paid money for a ticket, you didn't get the seat. You get general admission? Yeah, general admission is different. Well, Ann, you're involved in also at SoFi. When you buy general admission tickets, for example, are those specific seats or they are sort of first come first serve? Usually, it depends on the event. It's a specific seat usually, but there are concerts that have field. You can go on the field and that's not a seat. Well, my guess is when it comes to a soccer match, you can't actually play it with people on the field. Maybe I have that wrong. I was just saying, yeah, exactly. No, I get it. No, I know that's true. I mean, concerts, they do. Yeah, so would that be general, the field tickets? Are those just GA considered GA or is that? Well, there can't be field tickets. No, no, I get it, but for a concert. Oh, for a concert? Yeah, they sell the mosh pit. Right. Yeah, and you stand up for, you know, 16 hours to get in and you're there at, what, 6.30 a.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. and you're standing the whole time? Yeah.

Those general admission tickets are delight. But I doubt that FIFA is going to get away with this. I think Bonte has a very, very good point. And I can't imagine that they would sell tickets for thousands of dollars and say, here's the general area you sit in. I think the Olympics are doing the same thing, though. Yeah. And some football games do have standing room only tickets at the ends behind like the end zones and those levels, upper levels. Okay. Anyway, so much for that. The Fed chair is confirmed. The Senate has confirmed Kevin Warsh as the Federal Reserve's next chair in a 54-45 vote. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, the only Democrat to support Kevin Warsh. So the hitch on this is one of the reasons that Trump wanted Jerome Powell out is because he wouldn't reduce. interest rates but now Trump's ally, Steve Bannon, says fresh inflation data makes it highly unlikely that Kevin Warsh is going to have the flexibility to cut the rates. Well, how about flexibility versus, hey, you cut the interest rates? Yes, Mr. President, I will do exactly that. One of the reasons that Jerome Powell got in trouble because he just wouldn't agree to everything that the president asked for. And so Kevin Warsh, here's the problem. Worse said, oh, yo, I believe in the Fed being independent. Just like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said, oh, no, I believe in the vaccine programs. I would never change it around. Pam Bondi. Oh, no, I believe in the independence of the Department of Justice. On and on and on. So let's see what Kevin Warsh does. Oh, and let's not forget Brett Kavanaugh when he was nominated for the bench and confirmed. I believe in Roe versus Wade. I think precedent is very important. Okay. Let's move on and see the rest of the appointees and what happens. There's no more independence left in the executive branch. It doesn't exist. You know, parts of the branch of the executive branch that had firewalls that had independence, the Fed, very independent, Department of Justice, the FBI that were quasi-independent where the president should not get involved and did not get involved prior to today. Recognize that there should be some independence. It's gone. Finished. Done. Okay. A federal employee union is suing the Department of Agriculture in part on First Amendment grounds. This was started on May 13th, accusing USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins of illegally proselytizing the agency's workers. So the complaint is alleging that Rollins sent a bunch of religious emails to USDA employees since becoming secretary.

Gosh, so just a little over a year ago, February 25th, or 25, rather, including Independence Day emails calling for God's protection and favor towards the United States. That's... And God gave us the greatest gift of possible, the gift of his son and our favor of Jesus Christ. Yeah, that to me gets different. The generic stuff is like, but yeah, when you start getting into the very specific stuff, you start going. I know, it's tough. It shouldn't be in any workplace. No, pitching, pitching Jesus as the answer in a governmental missive. And I don't know if you read it, but the complaint was first filed by Schmooley Feinberg, who had a tough time with this. That's not usually other religions. It's usually atheists that get their hair in a bunch. There's a speedo controversy at school. A water polo player's mom is calling on two Temecula school board members to resign. She's accused the school board members of sexualizing members of the boys water polo team. So here's where it started. Tomecula Valley High School water polo team had meets one day. In between their meets, they went to a baseball game. During that time, they had the letters B-E-A-R-S on their chest. And they dropped their pants to reveal school-colored brown and yellow swimwear. Their Speedos, yeah. Yeah. And then one of the school board members said, are our teams now and only fans crew? And then another, the school board members weighed in. And so now the. The mom of the water polo player wants the school board members to resign. Yeah, of course. I mean, let's make a big deal out of nothing. Although speedos are kind of interesting. I can see them when you're, they'll swim meets, et cetera. But man, speedos on the beach, I've always wondered about that. Because, you know, guys wearing speedos, I mean, you can literally see every pimple on their scrote. Oh. I mean, it's, you know, those are speedos. 6.57. Scroat. Time check. Got a late start today. We got a late start. Yes. A late stroke charge or a stroke mention. Yes. Okay, guys. We are completely, oh, just really quickly. One last one. Oh, because it says Nazi? Yeah, because it says Nazi. We always go for the Nazi reference. All right. From Scroote to Nazi. A leader of Eastern European neo-Nazi group was sentenced to 15 years. in federal prison for soliciting violent attacks against the Jewish community and members of minority groups. Now, this included a crazy scheme to distribute poisoned candy to children during the holidays. Wow. And the judge, I'm going to nail him. The judge did say, hey, that's okay for Halloween. But come on, during the rest of the year, okay, we're done.
