I feel like my job is listening really, really hard. Listen to Here's the Thing on the IHeart Radio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You're listening to Bill Handel, on demand from KFI AM 640. California.
AM 640. Handel here. It is a Monday morning, June 22, National Air Conditioning and Heating Day. Uh, yeah. Why not? And Kono, what are the other days that this is? Every day there's a national holiday, like dozens of them. It's National Kissing Day. National Kissing Day, that's right. And as I mentioned, also that coincides with National Mononucleosis Day. And sure, why not? Lots of fun, fun national days. Okay, some of the big stories we're looking at. The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has... announced his resignation, also Alan Greenspan, who for five terms of the head of the Fed, has died at the age of 100. All right. Conspiracy theories. I love conspiracy theories because, well, it's conspiracy theories. So this one has to do with California elections because California elections take far longer to count the ballots than any other state by a long shot. And Democratic leaders refuse to pursue any changes that what they say, decreased voter access despite voter frustration with the slow, slow trickle of results. California is a weird state. And I must tell you, I don't understand how and what the argument is for disenfranchisement with the policy. California, first of all, it's mail-in ballots. 90% of the votes are mail-in ballots, which just takes a lot longer to count. All right, I'll buy that. And on top of that, if you, as long as the... election the ballot is postmarked by the day of the election there's up to a week for California to count it very few other states have that matter of fact yeah and the states that do the government the state government pays for that because county government is the one that makes accounts so here is the issue and the state doesn't want to move is the argument is by allowing a late period for balloting in terms of if you put it to the last day and then you have seven days, well, it opens up the argument that it is rigged. It is totally rigged. Look how long it's taking you to count ballots. And the longer it takes, the more rigged and fraudulent it is. There's an automatic connection. In addition to the rigging, the Democrats automatically rig all the voting. It doesn't matter where, it doesn't matter when, but that is a different issue. And here is, and California says what we're doing this is it takes longer. We have more ballots. We have many more mail-in ballots. California registers every voter. Every voter gets a ballot. You don't have to register to vote. It all comes out.
Every cycle. So what ends up happening? It just takes longer because of the amount of time involved. Now, here's my question. If there is a date certain, and that's what a lot of states say, and this is what the conspiracy theory says, if the ballots have to arrive by election day the way we want to. Where is the disenfranchisement? Poor people, minorities. I guess if they mail it in a week later and you make the rules that they have to mail it in a week earlier, okay, you mail it in a week earlier. Now what? There's the day. If you miss it, if you miss it, you miss it. What happens if you want to vote the day after the election? Well, we should allow you to do that because otherwise you're poor. You can't get through, you can't get to the polls. How about this? Well, you can't afford postage. That's free. Well, we can't get to the post office. We have no way of really putting our vote into play. What difference does it make if it's a week earlier or a week later? You still have no way of getting to the polls. So I don't get it. I don't understand it. And also I don't understand the allegation of conspiracy. I guess the allegation is if you allow more time for the vote to be counted. And California extends that big time. You can vote early and you can vote late as far as California is concerned. All that extra time allows for fraud to be committed, even though there is zero proof that that massive fraud is, and that is the argument. Any fraud that is discovered, therefore that translates into huge amounts of fraud. And the courts have held over and over again. No, there isn't. It's not widespread. Well, here is someone who fraudulently voted. Okay, so they have a half a dozen of those people. There's 150 million voters nationwide. Do you think you're going to find some fraud somewhere? Of course you are. We go undocumented with a crime. Look at how many undocumented people commit these horrible crimes. And now up you show some guy who's committed a murder who sneaked across the border. How about explaining to us why statistics say that undocumented people in this country commit fewer crimes than citizens if you compare the two? Why? Because undocumented people are scared to death to deal with the authorities. So the argument of fraud is ridiculous. At the same time, the argument of let's give people the right, the ability to vote all over the place, way before, even after, as long as it's postmarked. Okay. As I said, make it a week earlier. You're still poor.
You're still going to have a hard time getting into the polls. Okay, we're done. Now, interesting story that came up of loneliness. Loneliness, okay, it has become, according to many people, and there is no refutation here, that is damaging to the point where it is more damaging than heavy smoking and obesity. And that's according to our former surgeon general Murthy. It has grown into a full-blown crisis. And there's two new legislative proposals. to give money for funding community groups and research into the health implications of isolation. So you got Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, Kristen Villabrand, a Democrat from New York, introduced, and this was last week, the Addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Americans Act, Silo, the Silo Act. Don't you love these acronyms? Now, originally, there was a move to put in a bill, the a looser bill, the a looser act. You are a loser act, and that didn't go very far, even though it probably does exactly the same thing that this bill does. But it is serious. What I didn't know is how it connects to the physical ailments. According to a nonprofit that's studying this, seniors are struggling, young people are struggling even more. That's true. By the way, loneliness has really hit us in a way. And a lot of it has to do with people go on the net. They go on websites. They talk to each other when they do through chats. I mean, we happen to hang alone a lot. And it is, and this is science now. It is really affecting us. It's affecting our health. It's affecting productivity. A lot of people don't go to work anymore at the office. There is a lot of remote working. And according to Andrew McPherson, who is on the Chair Foundation for Social Connection Action Network, another nonprofit, America's epidemic of loneliness demands a coordinated government-wide response. This one I didn't know. In 2018, the UK, United Kingdom, created a Minister of Loneliness. Wow. And you know how whenever press conferences are given, there are people behind who's ever doing the press conference. Nobody behind him when he gave his first press conference. Nobody. And there's nobody who works in his office because he's lonely. And so what do they do in the UK? How do they deal with this? Doctors actually prescribe social connection.
How? Recreation, housing, transportation, health care, education, and they're prescribing this. And how does the government get involved in prescribing, dealing with loneliness? Well, you subsidize. The government subsidizes recreation and transportation and health care for those people that are lonely. And the older you get, the lonelier you tend to get. I mean, it's hard to believe. Guys, here in the morning crew, did you know I once had friends? Did you know I actually used to hang out with people? I know they're all shaking their heads. No. Yes. Yes, I had. I used to have hair. I used to be trim. Matter of fact, I at one point was thin. I think it was July 10th, 1968, between 10 and 2 o'clock. I was actually thin. But the older you get is, it is scary, but it's true. I mean, we are a lonely society, and it does affect us. I didn't know that it affected you like smoking. I didn't know that it affected you like obesity. And we're talking about cardiovascular disease. We're talking about emotional health. We're talking psychological. I mean, it's, and the rest of this crowd over here that I work with, they all have friends. You all have friends. And my question is why? So we don't turn into you. Oh. Yeah, that makes sense. Okay. That resonates. You seem happy, though, being lonely guy. Yeah, I'm not bad. Well, I'm not happy, but I am, well, I'm not unhappy. Yeah, I am. But then I'm unhappy when I am happy. I can't be happy unless I'm unhappy. That's what makes me happy. Believe me, I have long conversations when I shrink over this concept. Long conversations. I'm going to see my shrink today, as a matter of fact. Today I have an appointment at 2 o'clock with my shrink. And I'm looking forward to her. She doesn't let me sit on a chair. She has to be sitting on the floor and calls me a worm. There's a lot to be said for my sessions with my shrink. Okay. Now, Iran. Okay, Iran is at the World Cup. Iranians are here in Los Angeles. Matter of fact, the first game against the, was it Iran? No, Iran I think played New Zealand, right? Do I have that right? Or no, I think Iran played the U.S. if I have that right. I don't keep up with this. Kono, Iran and the U.S. first game, right? Do I have that right? No, it wasn't the U.S. It was. Was it New Zealand? I'm blinking. I don't know. Yeah, so am I. Okay, fair enough. But they played a so-fi. That I know. And the coach of the Iranian team says, what do we look like? Chopped liver? We're not being treated very well. Yeah, you're Iranian. Yes, that's correct. We're not particularly happy with Iran these days.
And the coach says, let's differentiate politics from international games or international athletics. Well, we're not really good about that. And I'll tell you who's even worse about that is this administration and not particularly pro-Iran these days. I'm kind of shocked that the Iranian team was even allowed in this country. because visas have to be given to the Iranians. And how many Iranians I think are being given visas anyway as of right now? Tourists, no. People that are coming in on visas for school? No, I don't think so. Anyway, the Iranian coach Amir Galanoia, I guess his name is. We'll call him Amir for short. Amy. Ami, okay? Why not? Anyway, his argument is still being untreated unfairly by the U.S. through travel restrictions, visa refusals, and he's hoping FIFA will persuade the U.S. to lessen some of the strictures, some of the negatives aspect of them traveling next week. I'm very glad that the Iranian nation is behind us, he said. Our martyrs in Iran, we play for them, but I know this kind of behavior is going to hurt people, hurt our people. Even if we spend billions of dollars, we will not be able to have justice for our people. It shows we are an oppressed country, but I hope we achieve peace. And I hope this kind of behavior does not become institutionalized in the World Cup. So let me ask you, here he is. And he is in the United States and is saying publicly, we are an oppressed people and we don't have justice in Iran. How do you think the Iranian government is going to take that when he goes back? Not well. The point is that the U.S. government has made it difficult for Iran. For example, the training. normally is, would be for many countries that are playing at SOFI. They have training facilities here, not the Iranians. They had to move it to Tijuana. We don't want them here. So they're allowed to come in at the last minute and they're forced to leave right after the game. And the coach is saying that's ridiculously unfair because we don't have the time to train the way the rest of the international teams do. So he appealed to other teams saying, hey, please, we want you. Please go to the government of the U.S. and ask them to help us out with the visas. And that is, restrict the restrictions. And as he said, I asked the other 47 coaches a question, or that question, none of them have responded to me. We're here for football, not politics. Our grievances are the way they've behaved with us. So plenty of travel restrictions.
The team has been directed to fly its matches in the U.S. on the day before and leave the day, literally the same day. And it is, well, they're not very happy, and it's true. They are not being treated the same. So the coach said that FIFA actually is attempting to persuade the U.S. government to allow Iran to fly to Los Angeles a day before. Nope, no way. negotiations have not succeeded on that one. Oh, they did play New Zealand, by the way, the opening match of the World Cup at SoFi, drawing a two-to-two tie with New Zealand, never thought that it would do that. You mean Los Angeles Stadium? I said it's So-Fi. No, but it's Los Angeles Stadium. Can't say So-Fi. Of course I can't. No, but they changed it. You got a FIFA. Oh, that's right. Yeah, temporarily they made it at Los Angeles Stadium. Yeah, right. Did they cover up SoFi? They covered it all. They cover up the name. Was it the same group of people that covered up the Donald Trump name on the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Center? I am not, I have not gone to SoFi or seen the pictures, but they literally covered up the name and they put in Los Angeles Stadium? Well, they're more just covered up. They don't exactly put Los Angeles Stadium. They just name it Los Angeles Stadium. Yeah, like on the TV, lower thirds and things. Huh. Okay. I didn't know that. All I knew was about the visas. That I knew. Levi Stadium up north in Santa Clarita, they just have a sheet over where it says Levi's. It's just a white, it looks like it's under construction. They just covered it. They didn't put anything on it. Huh. So when the Iranian team plays up there is a big sheet that says no Jew stadiums? No, no, don't think we're going there. Okay, we're done with that. Now, here is something that I find interesting, but we sort of knew what was going to happen. Solar energy overtook coal in May, actually, as a U.S. power generator. First time it has beat coal. Solar supply 12.8% of U.S. electricity last month. Coal accounted for 12.2. And by the way, they've crossed, and it's going to be a bigger and bigger difference. The use of solar is surging. Why? Well, first of all, the U.S. is scrambling to add new electricity sources to meet the power needs of AI data centers. There is not going to be enough energy any place, and they have to manufacture a lot more. And the solar industry has grown and grown, even as the Trump administration is doing everything it can to stop solar in its tracks.
The administration favors traditional electric sources, including coal and nuclear, which can produce power around the clock, unlike solar, unlike wind. There are two reasons, I think, the administration is saying no to solar. One of them is this one, which, okay, you know, you're right. At night, it doesn't work. I get it. When the wind doesn't blow, that doesn't work. But the battery. technology is so great today that even utilities are able to store power. And the other reason I think is the politics. Democrats and left-winger, the radical left loves solar and hate coal, hate fossil fuel. Well, the administration says it has never backed away from that is climate change is fraud. So we don't have to worry about that. And, of course, any burning of fossil fuel adds to climate change according to a whole climate warming, actually, earth warming. It adds a lot with the ozone layer, et cetera. And that just doesn't exist for this administration. So what the administration is doing is pushing coal and other fossil fuel technology like crazy, and even nukes, which is on itself, because I agree that nukes are the future. You can't do what we want to do without nuclear power. It just doesn't exist. But the bottom line, it's solar. Solar is growing and growing and growing. Why? Because solar is now cheaper. than other means of energy. And I didn't know when that was going to happen, but it makes sense. And it's free and it doesn't pollute. And if you come to my neighborhood, which you never will, you will see probably 50% of the roofs right around my neighborhood that have solar panels on them. I also have to live in the most expensive utility in the United States. So that makes sense. But it's all about solar. Not with sanding what the president is doing. Man, he just wants to cut it, just wants to close it down as well as wind. Well, the wind is against him. It's blowing against his philosophy. He just likes traditional fossil fuels. And is it because, I don't know, the fossil fuel industry, the oil companies put piles of money into his campaign and to Republicans? I don't know. I know they do, and is that the reason? Probably. I think that has a lot to do with it. But anyway, I just wanted to share with you. The stat is solar has now gone past coal first time. All right, guys, we're done. Coming up tomorrow, we do it all over again. Will is gone, so there'll be no traffic, so you can go ahead and drive because there's no traffic. If Will isn't around, there's no traffic out there. Amy is back from her vacation. Kono is here. We don't know if, do we know if Neil's coming back tomorrow, any idea? At this point, I know he was a little under the weather. Depends on how he feels. It depends on whether he's over the weather or under the weather. Thank you for that. This is why Amy gets the big bucks around here. And I'm back too. We're doing, we do it all over again. Now, let's not forget Ann either. This is KFI AM 640.
