Hey there from CNN. I'm David Rind with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, July 8th. Are we fully back to war with Iran? If you listen to President Donald Trump, the answer is at best uncertain. After the two sides traded strikes overnight, Trump said the memorandum of understanding between the two nations was over, but added he would let his negotiators keep talking if they want. And sitting alongside Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky at the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump said there is more to come. We had them very hard last night.

Very, very hard. Probably had them hard again tonight. I'll give him a little warning. We're going to hit them hard tonight. Trump also said he may reimpose the naval blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The administration already reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil sales. Meanwhile, in Tehran, CNN spoke to Iranians about this moment, and many feel undeterred. For the last 47 years, we have seen this type of threat so many times.

And on the basis of these threats, day by day, we are getting stronger and more experienced. All right, coming up, the Senate race in Maine remains in limbo. Stick around. So Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner has seen virtually all his support among top Democrats disappear this week following allegations of sexual assault, which he has strongly denied. Top voices in the party, including Senator Bernie Sanders, have called on him to drop out. But he is still technically on the ballot, and a key deadline is fast approaching here. CNN's Arlette Science is in Portland, Maine for us.

2:05

So Arlette, is he going to drop out or not? Yeah, well, Graham Platner and his team are basically trying to navigate this way out of this Senate race without squandering the movement that they build. He's not digging in, and he's not trying to find a path forward for his Senate campaign. That's according to sources familiar with the matter. He is expected to announce a decision through a video that could come later on Wednesday, but it's still very TBD.

2:34

As of this morning, the message had not been taped, but one source close to the Graham Platner campaign said this could and should end today. We'll see if it does. Graham Platner has until Monday to drop out. The main Democratic Party would then have another two weeks to put forward a candidate. The Democratic Party here says that Graham Platner's team plays no role in this, but Graham Platner's team has tried to. to argue that they want to make sure that their volunteers and voters here in Maine will have the say about who the next nominee will be not the political establishment. An immigration and customs enforcement officer shot and killed a Mexican man yesterday as agents attempted to arrest him in Houston. In a statement to CNN, an ICE spokesperson said

agents tried to conduct a traffic stop and arrest Lorenzo Salgado Arajo, who they say was living in the U.S. illegally. The agency claimed Selgado Arrajo refused to follow several verbal commands and rammed into one of its law enforcement vehicles. The Department of Homeland Security's office of the Inspector General is leading an investigation into the shooting. The FBI's Houston Field Office is also investigating a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer. CNN has reached out to DHSOIG and FBI Houston for more information.

3:43

Family, elected officials, and civil rights groups are demanding an investigation. Salgado Arajo's son posted on Facebook that his father was a hardworking Mexican man who worked in construction to provide first. his wife and three children. No video of the shooting has emerged. Araho's killing is the second ICE-involved shooting this week and comes amid an uptick in immigration enforcement prompted by the Trump administration's sweeping deportation agenda. Another legal case in President Trump's ongoing battle with the press has been dismissed. A federal judge threw out Trump media's $3.8 billion defamation case against the Washington Post, ruling there wasn't enough evidence that the paper

acted with actual malice. That's a very high legal standard. public figures have to meet to win a lawsuit like this. The case centered around a 2023 story with the headline, trust linked to porn-friendly bank could gain a stake in Trump's true social. The post reported on the legal ruling saying they're pleased with the decision, while a spokesperson for Trump media didn't respond to a request for comment from CNN. They told the post they're evaluating whether to appeal. Trump has pending litigations against the BBC, the New York Times, and the Des Moines

register and refiled the defamation suit against the Wall Street Journal in May over its reporting on the lewd birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein bearing his name. Trump has denied writing the letter. All right, one more break. When we come back, it's been anything but a pool party at the Lincoln Memorial this summer. Stick around. lululemon.com. Algae bloom, screen water, chipping on the bottom, unsubstantiated allegations of vandalism. These are just some of the problems that have plagued the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. since President Trump began a major renovation of the landmark. Now, for the second time in three months, the pool is going to be at least partially drained. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Katie Miller, a conservative podcaster and the wife of Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, that it will be a combination of cleanup from July 4th celebrations and repairs.

6:12

Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff, repair the vandalism that was done, fill it back up again. The administration will use the same contractor that won a no-bid deal to seal and paint the bottom of the pool for this round of repairs. Virginia-based Atlantic industrial coatings told CNN that they didn't have any information about the timeline of the work and declined to answer questions about the contract and the cost of additional repairs. The Interior Department also did not respond to questions about the timeline. All right, that's all we got for now. Next update comes your way later tonight. I'll talk to you later.

You have to feel it. Her name is Nicole Avant. She's a producer, a former diplomat, and an author. In 2021, Nicole's mom, Jacqueline, was shot to death by an intruder in her home. She was 81 years old and had been married to Nicole's dad, Clarence, for 54 years. How is grief different for you now than it was maybe at first? A lot of really positive memories have now taken over versus the shock and the trauma. The grief is still there, but it shows up kind of with a smile.
