Good morning, everyone. I'm Kate Baldwin. It's Wednesday, May 13th. Here are your five things. Number one, the cartel assassination. There is this wild video and exclusive new reporting coming in about the CIA coming out today that the American spy agency may have facilitated a deadly explosion inside of Mexico that killed a member of the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

0:58

This video shows a car bursting into flames and then losing control on one of Mexico's busiest highways, killed instantly inside Francisco Beltran, a mid-level cartel operative along with his driver. This happened, according to sources, back in March, just now learning about it, though, and multiple sources now tell CNN that this was a targeted assassination facilitated by CIA officers. And that it's part of an expanded and secret CIA campaign within Mexico to dismantle cartel networks. by taking out mid-level operatives like Beltran. The Mexican official confirmed an explosive device had been hidden inside the vehicle. The CIA declined to comment before the story published, but now calls it, quote,

false and salacious reporting that serves as nothing more than a PR campaign for the cartels and puts American lives at risk. It didn't specify any aspect of the reporting, though, that was false. Mexico's government says that it rejects any effort, that seeks to normalize, justify, or suggest the existence of lethal, covert, or unilateral operations by foreign agencies on national territory.

Number two, the FBI scrutiny. Even in the wild world of today, where personal attacks have become the rule, not the exception, when Trump officials testify before Congress, even in that world, Kash Patel's appearance yesterday was rough. Going scorched earth when lawmakers questioned his ability to do his job amid reports that he hasn't been doing his job. Here's what happened. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen

2:34

asked about the Atlantic's reporting of concerns at the FBI about Kash Patel's alleged excessive drinking. There have been no occasions when your security detail had difficulty waking or locating you. Is that right? Nope, it's a total force.

2:49

I don't even know where you get this stuff. The only person that was slinging margaritas in El Salvador on the taxpayer dollar with a convicted gang-banging rapist was you. You know, the fact... The only person that... ran up a $7,000 bar tab in Washington, D.C. At the lobby dark was you.

3:03

So the only individual in this room that has been drinking on tax. And clearly it didn't end there. Kash Patel has sued the Atlantic, just as a reminder over the reporting we're talking about here, calling it false and saying that he has never been drunk at work. Kash Patel there, apparently, and hit back and forth, making reference to Chris Van Hollen' visit to Kilmar-Bregor Garcia, a man the Trump administration had deported to El Salvador, despite a court order prohibiting his deportation.

Chris Van Hollen about this later tweeted, Glasses were placed in front of us, but we did not drink them. I know that may be a confusing concept for Director Kash Patel. Number three, the end of Alcatraz. It looks like Florida has plans to shut down the controversial migrant detention center known as Alligator Alcatraz, and this is less than a year after it first opened. The New York Times and Local News Channel WFOR

reporting that detainees will be removed by early June, and the whole facility will be dismantled in just weeks after. The site is deep in the Florida Everglades and face mountains of issues or at least questions and scrutiny, legal challenges, rising costs, allegations of inhumane conditions. Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stopped short of confirming that the reports it was going, confirming reports that it was going to be shut down. But he did say that the facility was always intended to be temporary.

They still need the beds, but if they tell us they're not going to send any more there, then obviously we're not just going to do it just to do it. I mean, it was there to serve a purpose. It was never meant to be permanent. And I hope that they have the resources to be able to handle it themselves. It's not clear where the nearly 1,400 detainees being held there will now be moved. The Department of Homeland Security said yesterday that any reports that DHS is pressuring the state to cease operations at alligator alcatraz are false. Number four, the Senate seat.

4:54

So the woman who just won the Democratic primary in Nebraska for U.S. Senate is now promising to drop out before the general election. Cindy Burbank is a retired pharmacy technician and has acknowledged that she was basically only there to serve as a spoiler. Here's the story, guys. To keep her opponent, the goal was to keep her opponent William Forbes out of the running and then clear the way for the man running as an independent. We're going to get to that in just one second. First, Democrats argue that the Trump supporting pro-life pastor from rural, Nebraska, William Forbes, they argue that he was a plant and accuse him of trying to siphon away votes from their preferred candidate. Now enter Dan Osborne. He's a Navy veteran and union

leader. He is the guy running as the independent. The man, Democratic leaders see as their best chance to flip the seat and beat incumbent Republican Senator Pete Ricketts. Osborne came within seven points in 2024 of defeating Nebraska's other Republican senator, even though Trump won the state by more than 20 points. So now, Cindy Burbank, who just won, she says as soon as Dan Osborne collects enough signatures to officially make the ballot, she will bow out. More right after this. Back to school starts now. One last thing. I always love to hear about a chapter two when it comes to people's careers, and boy is this one. Let me set the scene, a multimillionaire giving it all up to become a priest. Now the details. Scott Vincent Borba was the co-founder of Elf Cosmetics, the wildly successful, almost ubiquitous makeup brand. Borba says that with that success, he became a poster child, if you will, for the luxury lifestyle of fame and fortune. Think partying with the Kardashians type of a lifestyle. And Borba says that he found himself at a glamorous event one night, wondering what it was all for, and he prayed for clarity.

7:17

And that came. And he decided to give it all up, give up his fortune to charity, and become a deacon at a calmer. California Seminary. Now, for the last few years, he has been there and called home a one tiny room with very few belongings. And after years of study, he is now taking the next big step and becoming an actual priest and says he's never been happier. Once you have the grace to give away big chunks of your estate, you feel the sense of freedom to help others, especially the poor. And I just, he gave me the grace just to give it all. amazing for who will officially be ordained as a Catholic priest on May 23rd
