US-China Summit, SCOTUS on Abortion Drug, El Niño’s Status and more

Hey from CNN. I'm AfomaDK with the five things you need to know for Thursday, May 14th. We start with the latest on President Donald Trump's trip to China. In a Fox News interview, Trump said Chinese president Xi Jinping offered to help resolve the war between the U.S. and Iran. Though in a separate interview, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. isn't seeking assistance from Beijing. Trump said Xi Jinping vowed not to provide military equipment to Iran, but he also said she emphasized China's economic ties to the country, as it's Iran's largest oil consumer. The president had been widely expected to push China to pressure Iran to accept a peace deal and to open the strait of her moves.

You know, what's clear is that this conflict overall is not something that's going to end with Chinese intervention. We have watched as the U.S. and Iran are still very, very far apart at the negotiations. table, but China could certainly wield significant influence here if they choose to get involved. Meanwhile, Trump said Xi Jinping agreed to order 200 Boeing jets. Tomorrow is Trump's last day in China. Both leaders are expected to sit for tea and a diplomatic lunch before Trump heads back to the U.S. More news coming up, including another Trump official's departure.

The maker of the drug Danco Laboratories challenged an appeals court ruling that reinstated a nationwide requirement that the pill be obtained in person. That's after Louisiana sued the Food and Drug Administration last year over its policy that allowed women to obtain abortion drugs by male, alleging that the Biden-era regulation undermined its own abortion ban.

A federal district court in April partly sided with the state because the FDA didn't have enough data to judge the drug safety. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks told CNN today that he's stepping down effective immediately. He's the latest senior immigration official to leave the Department of Homeland Security since Markwayne Mullin replaced Kristi Noem as DHS Secretary. In a statement, Banks said he was proud of his time at Border Patrol and is ready to step away to enjoy his life and family. Banks was a longtime Border Patrol agent who previously served as Texas' borders are. Banks' departure marks the third high-profile turnover within the Department of Homeland Security,

in two months. The Senate has voted to block Senators' pay during government shutdowns. This comes after two major shutdowns in recent months, a 43-day federal government shutdown last year and a 76-day DHS shutdown earlier this year. The measure doesn't need approval from the House nor the President and is binding for Senators in November after the midterm elections. Regarding if it's constitutional, the Constitution only states that lawmakers are to be paid from the Treasury, with no exceptions mentioned.

The speaker of the house is not indicated whether the house will adopt a similar measure. Coming up, a warning from forecasters that could impact summer. I'm Audie Cornish. El Nino is emerging even faster than expected in the Pacific Ocean, and it could become a rare super El Nino by fall or winter. CNN's Alison Chinchara has the forecast. So right now we are under an El Nino watch. Basically, that just means those conditions are likely to emerge this summer and will likely persist all the way through the remainder of this year. Here's a look at those current temperatures in the Pacific Ocean that above average is supposed to spike over the next few months as we head into summer, especially June and July in August, where we start to see an increased likelihood of having those El Nino conditions. So the big question becomes, okay, but what does that actually mean?

Well, in the Atlantic Ocean, it actually typically means not quite as severe of an Atlantic hurricane season. And part of that is because you end up getting fewer storms that come off of Africa, but you also have wind shear that increases. And what that does is it really prohibits the storms from developing fully into their biggest potential. That as for us, our next episode drops tomorrow morning.
