93 segmentsHi from CNN, I'm David Ryan with the five things you need to know for Friday, June 26th. The death toll in the Venezuela double earthquakes has jumped significantly. Acting President Delci Rodriguez says at least 589 people have been killed, more than 2,900 have been injured. Unfortunately, that toll is only expected to go up as rescuers combed through the rubble. Time is running out to find survivors within that so-called golden window of up to 72 hours after the quake. journalist Norris Soto is on the ground in Caracas. You can only see people affected families on the stairs of the highway camping because they lost their homes, or they are unable to get back to them because they were severely affected.
The hardest hit area of Liguayra on Venezuela's coast remains extremely hard to reach, and there's been some criticism of a slow government response to areas outside Caracas, Rodriguez announced today her government is militarizing LaGuardaura State and said, we haven't slept a wink in our efforts to save lives. President Donald Trump's former national security advisor John Bolton has pleaded guilty to charges that he unlawfully retained sensitive national security information. John Bolton is no fan of Trump and vice versa, but experts say this is a much different case than other attempted prosecutions of Trump enemies that have fallen apart, like that of former FBI director James Comey. CNN's Caitlin Polans is outside the courthouse in Greenbelt, Maryland. What happened here in this case, it's not one of those flash-in-the-pan cases that just popped up because Trump demanded it so and was resulting in a plea. This is a case that had been investigated for years by the FBI and the Justice Department. What they found is that John Bolton, when he was
in service of Trump in the White House, he had a very high-house. level security clearance, and he was taking notes of what he was learning in real time in classified briefings. Those notes, he was sending them to himself and his wife and his daughter, and then he was keeping them essentially in his house after he left the Trump White House. He was keeping it for what he was calling his archives. Under the plea agreement, John Bolton will face no more than five years in prison at his October sentencing.
Investors are getting impatient with AI. The NASDAQ, which is a barometer for the tech industry, has ended every day this week in the red and has fallen more than 6% from its all-time high set on June 2nd. It's really a tale of two markets. Chipmakers are thriving because demand for semiconductors is soaring, while companies building AI products like Microsoft, Meta, and Apple are under pressure because profits haven't caught up with spending.
Just yesterday, Apple had to announce price hikes on many of their products because of memory chip shortages, causing higher costs and sending its stock tumbling more than 6%. Ukraine continues to tighten the screws on Russia and President Vladimir Putin. Authorities in Russia-controlled Crimea have declared a state of emergency after Ukrainian strikes led to widespread power and fuel shortages. CNN Chief International Security correspondent Nick Peyton Walsh is here. Nick, what's going on here? Yeah, David, so we're seeing an extraordinary effort by Ukraine here to institute what they
call a logistical lockdown on Crimea. That's the peninsula of Ukraine originally occupied by Russia back in 2014. They're using mid-range drones to hit bridges, roads, trains, refineries, electricity infrastructure, causing blackouts across major cities and now an emergency situation to be declared by local officials. It is quite remarkable, and it's indeed causing a place which has for years been one where oblivious Muscovites like to go and get a little bit of beach time, go on vacation. Well, it's now a scene where the skies are filled with smoke and hundreds, if not thousands of cars are trying to leave on the remaining bridges. A remarkable feat here, the Defence Minister Ukraine,
saying they want to turn the peninsula into, quote, an island. Remarkable to see the speed in which that's happening.
