Hey from CNN. I'm Afoma DK with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, June 30th. The Supreme Court handed down rulings on several blockbuster cases on the final day of its term. In our noon edition, CNN's David Ryan told you the High Court upheld birthright citizenship, striking down President Donald Trump's executive order that was a key part of this immigration agenda. The court also ruled to allow states to ban transgender athletes from playing on girls' sports teams. And here's another major ruling in the world of campaign finance. In a six to three decision, the court backs a GOP-led effort to lift campaign spending caps that had been in place since the Watergate era.

CNN's Paula Reid has more. So this is significant because this lawsuit was brought by then Senate candidate, JD Vance. And the question is, are these limits, are these caps on how much money you can spend in coordination with the candidate? Are these constitutional? Is this a violation of the First Amendment? And as we've seen over the past decades since Citizens United, the Supreme Court has sort of consistently been rolling back some of these limits on campaign spending. But this could have an enormous impact in upcoming elections because we know that even before this decision was handed down, Republicans have already entered this election year with a substantial financial advantage over Democrats. A lawmaker is getting candid about his months-long absence from Congress.

When people hear the word depression, many people think simply feel, means feeling sad. But depression is so much more than that. A Republican lawmaker is explaining why he was away from Washington for more than 100 days. New Jersey's GOP congressman Tom Kane said he experienced severe depression that required a long-term stay in the hospital. The doctors recommended that I remain in the hospital to address my illness. They explained to me that this would be the fastest way to recovery. And to be honest, I was hesitant. but I agreed to follow my doctor's recommendations.

2:27

Again, not believing that it would result in a long-term stay. I began to understand not only my diagnosis, but how long depression had been affecting my life. Kane's absence drew attention because until today, he kept his constituents and colleagues in the dark about why he was unable to return to Congress, as House Republicans navigated a historically near all majority. Dozens of wildfires are raging across the west, and there's more danger ahead in the Four Corners region.

2:59

CNN's lead meteorologist Brandon Miller has the forecast. Hi, Afoma. That's right. These fast-moving wildfires have scorched thousands of acres across the west over the past week, and conditions do not look to be easing over the next several days. Primarily, we're looking at Utah and Colorado as the trouble spots. In southern Utah, the Cottonwood Fire has burned an estimated 150 structures and has put up to the to nearly 100,000 acres, an area bigger than Salt Lake City by Tuesday afternoon.

3:26

The blaze is only 4% contained. In Colorado, a rapidly moving fire known as the Aspen Acres Fire began Monday morning and has already burned nearly 25,000 acres and forced the evacuation of thousands across Pueblo and Custer counties. Now, critical fire conditions characterized by low humidity and gusty winds will be prevalent over the next several days, and July 4th fireworks have been banned in these areas. A manhunt is underway across Monaco in France after a parcel bomb targeting a Ukrainian-born tycoon, went off in a residential building Monday night, injuring three people, according to local authorities.

4:02

CNN's Melissa Bell is in Paris. What we understand, even as that manhunt continues, is that Vadim Yermalaiov has been named by Ukrainian authorities as being one of the victims of this bomb lost. He's a 58-year-old Ukrainian who renounced his seat. Ukrainian citizenship. Back in 2019, he explained himself for tax reasons. He's now a citizen of Cyprus and was living with his family in Monaco. Nothing for now from authorities on why he may have been the target of this assassination attempt. What we do know is that he was sanctioned by Kiev back in 23 over allegations that he'd done business in Russian occupied Crimea, an allegation that he denied.

4:49

that he has a son who was convicted of fraud in Estonia, but left the country after doing a few months of jail time. Coming up, an NBA icon is moving on. The Brawn James is leaving the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason and entering free agency, according to his agent. ESPN's Asham's Cherania broke the story. My understanding is, after eight years there, with the lake, They won the championship in 2020, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

5:53

LeBron just felt that the time had come for both sides to move on. My understanding is he just felt he can find his happiness in life elsewhere out of the Lakers. And that's the decision he came to today. And so why today is NBA agency starts at 6 p.m. Eastern time. That means that at the 6 p.m. Eastern time, LeBron James is wide open, available on the open market in NBA Free Agency. And he will not be going back to the Lakers. And sources told me that it is a happiness-led decision for LeBron James.

6:22

That's what he's going to seek at his next home. It's not going to be a money-driven decision. That's all for now. Our next episode drops tomorrow morning.
